DON’T BE FRIGHTENED!

WAMPUS IS SIMPLY

A LEGEND AMONG LEGENDS The story of the Wampus Cat has many versions in Appalachian and Cherokee folklore. By most accounts, the creature is a half-cat, half-human who either protects the village or terrifies it. (For our purposes, we'll go with the first.) The Wampus makes its home in the mountainous wood, loves to go out at night and has been described as both lazy and “quick to rile.” Just add “has a taste for craft beer” and “rides a bike to work” and the Wampus Cat is a WNC resident in full! For the past few months, Xpress has been privy to rumors of alleged sightings and other encounters with a skulking, dapper feline with a human shadow. We dismissed such reports as variations on the Bigfoot theme. Then we received a letter to the editor (on paper, in an envelope, with a stamp), signed “Wampus.” This year's Best of WNC celebrates the region's Local Legends — the people, businesses, food, art and music that make life in the mountains a saga of absolute quality.

Looking in the large plate-glass windows from Biltmore Avenue, Cúrate always appears bustling. But inside, time slows down. The chefs and the wait staff work hard to create an environment that encourages diners to take time to linger and order tapas a couple at a time. The wait staff observes without intruding. White Duck Taco Shop makes a great taco at a great value. For a few dollars, the Thai peanut chicken taco or the Bangkok shrimp taco can be yours. But do you really want to make it a “cheap lunch” when you could add a taco with roasted duck confit and mole, a side of watermelon with mint, a bowl of cowboy beans, a slice of coconut macaroon pie and a housemade margarita? Skip the cheap lunch if you can. Go for the big spread. — E.P.

Doc Chey's gets veggies. The broccoli is crisp. The carrots are crunchy. The onions are punchy. The eggplant is slightly overdone, the way everyone likes it, even if they won't admit it. VINNIE'S NEIGHBORHOOD ITALIAN 641 MERRIMON AVE. 253-1077 VINNIESITALIAN.COM When a dish is just right, sometimes a problem arises: Everyone in your family or group of friends orders the same thing every time you visit the restaurant, and you all feel boring. But at Vinnie's, that kind of relationship with your favorite Italian comfort food is encouraged. They serve their pastas and specialties family-style. A THREE HOUR BENDER

Sunday brunch is a staple for the standard Saturday night drinker. And the Saturday night drinke r becomes the drinker of the Sunday bloody mary — that easy-to-stomach relief beverage packs the same power as ibuprofen and closed curtai ns. And as easy as it is to make a good one, it’s easier to mess them up. All of this makes finding a good one all the better. The Bloody Southern’s potato vodka is masked by delicately spiced tomato juice and rimmed with smoked salt. And you may need a knife and fork for the cheese and prosci utto stuffed pepper perched atop the ice. — K.S.

Scandals carries into its 30th year with yet another Best Gay Bar title, which the Grove Street nightclub has maintained since the category’s inception in 2009. Scandals is more than just a bar at this point; it’s a definitive part of Asheville, one of the few downtown establishments that has survived generational and ownership changes, as well as a variety of different cultural

beverage, and to making individuals feel welcome. “We put a lot of time and energy into training,” says Weatherly. “And it’s apparent in the quality of each cup and each espresso pour.” The Dripolator, aside from a classic espresso menu, features pourovers, beers on tap and wines by the glass. — K.S.

Although Biltmore Avenue has changed dramatically in the past year, Barley’s sticks to its roots. It still features 56 rotating beers on tap (more if there was space). Most of the beer selections, sought by part-owner Patrick Huss, are seasonal. But while the kegs rotate, Barley’s keeps “the staples of Asheville beer,” says Diana Jones, a 7-year Barley’s veteran. French Broad’s IPA is the taproom’s personal best-of for hopped beers, while Green Man’s Porter tops the malty end of the spectrum. As for the staff favorites, it depends on the day, but picks include Catawba’s Firewater IPA or French Broad’s Kolsch. — K.S.

We’re dropping the term hipster this year (it’s worn itself out) in favor of scenester. Earlier this year, Tiger Mountain Thirst Parlour announced it would open soon. When it finally debuted, it seemed an instant hit. This service-industry bar has the combined decor of an ex-Dollywood restaurant and a former 365Day Christmas store, with a little Jesus to top it off. Nativity characters, velvet paintings and mostly red light bulbs create an atmosphere of Super Kitsch. The standard drink is a PBR/High Life and shot of Old Crow, and the music, naturally, is sourced from their vinyl collection. Oh, and note the phone number — it was specially chosen. — K.S.

The Wedge has made its list of hopped and heavily malted brews into a namesake that is fast becoming synonymous with the River Arts District. There are the standards, such as the Julian Price Pilsner and Payne's Pale Ale — named after artist and former Wedge Studios owner John Payne. But as the months grow colder, the brewery will begin shifting further into its winter collection of beers. Fortunately, there's always the Iron Rail IPA, so popular it gets its own express-service window on the left side of the dock. It proves itself, time and again, to be so refreshing. — K.S.

I think that's what makes us stand out as No. 1." So how to explain the win? There are certainly single people at every bar in Asheville. The saloon-meets-David Lynch drinking fantasy has only been open a few months, but it’s already taken on multiple identities. So, is there a correlation between scenesters and the single life? — K.S.

And in the middle of July, when you’re longing for the middle of September (or perhaps January and February), when the streets, shops and bars are less crowded with tourists, one can always find solace at the Bywater. Just beyond the fence awaits live music (most nights), a food truck or a food busker and 18 mostly local taps to fill the 20-ounce pours. The majority of seating is outside — porch and backyard style — so there’s a weather ticker on the website to keep everyone up to speed. — K.S.

Your drink order may warrant a theatrical shake or stir. It’s acceptable under the circumstances. You are, after all, at Asheville’s Best Upscale bar. So put on your tie. Or your fedora. The low lighting bounces off the multitude of reflective surfaces, making everything and everyone glitter. The upstairs patio brings out the urbanite in anyone. What is “true blue”? Not being the least artistic, I had to ask the experts — the artists who work at this downtown landmark. It’s not phthalo, light ultramarine or smalt blue, as nice as those shades are. It’s bleu franc, the “kind of blue you get in the sky when the sun is setting, or rising, just below the horizon. It’s the kind of blue that comes from the heart,” says a staffer. — M.W.

Asheville has no shortage of musicians ... or shops to keep them picking. And like the players who crowd our downtown streets, the quality varies, to put it politely. Musician’s Workshop has been arming local pickers since many of them were in diapers, and its full-service repair services and comprehensive stock room (everything from guitars, banjos and drums to effects pedals, amps and recording equipment) made it the go-to shop for local musicians decades before Best Of WNC voting even existed. — D.S.

The gorgeous bridal gowns Priddy designs for her Ship to Shore label are both ethereal and traditional, incorporating historical elements (such as a scrap of lace from grandmother’s dress) into their romantic and flattering shapes. And if a gal is so lucky as to have a party dress made by the charming designer, she’s sure to mention it’s a Brooke Priddy. Xpress readers vote her into virtual icon status this year. Priddy’s talent extends to luscious fabric art installations; her works have graced galleries from The Artery to the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. — R.S.

Reprography is an artisan trade, or at least a specialized service, and downtown firm Henco has been printing, binding and drafting in the area for decades. Owned and operated by Asheville natives, Henco serves area architects and engineers; offers document storage and archiving; and provides artist services, such as fine printing, reproduction and mounting.

For Susan West, designer and owner of Blue Goldsmiths, her journey into jewelry-making was not a direct path, either. But with an education in design and experience making furniture for the movie biz, she transitioned into jewelry-making when she moved to Asheville. The online portfolio for Image 420 screenprinting, a pioneering Haywood Road business, reads like a survey of area culture. The graphics firm has produced posters, T-shirts and other promotional materials for bands, festivals, bike and road races and even Mission Hospitals. According to its website, Image 420 is “based around the belief that screenprinting can be an art form, an advertising media and a vehicle for the growth of any business.” — J.B.

~ celebrating 14 years ~ we thank you for your continued support

Believe it or not, people still buy music, as West Asheville’s Harvest Records is happy to attest. While other shops in larger markets closed their doors (sadly), our own vinyl haven expanded to provide even more used wax, CDs, rockumentaries, turntable accessories and, most recently, cassettes.

Local music lovers visit the shop as much to chat with the friendly, knowledgeable clerks as to browse the bins, and the relaxed, casual environment is one of the many reasons Harvest Records has become a nationally known record store. — D.S.

Grant Hardy, professor of history and religious studies, has taught at UNCA since 1994. He specializes in Chinese history, and in addition to teaching the history of Eastern cultures to UNCA students, Hardy has published a number of books and papers — he even has his own Wikipedia page. It’s not surprising that ECCS teacher Mele is one of WNC’s favorite teachers (again — he won in 2011, too). The seventh- and eighthgrade social studies teacher has taught at Evergreen for 11 years, filling hundreds of young minds with the wonders of, and lessons to learn from, world and American history. — A.F.G.
