Dear Friends of Mount de Sales Academy, After my first year at Mount de Sales Academy, I have lived and experienced the beauty of our school in so many ways. Our students strive for academic excellence, preparing them for college and for life. They have a generous spirit of service, enabling them to grow as responsible leaders of conscience and integrity. Most of all, they have great faith, which is so admirable in young people. I have seen them be nourished and nourish others as they mature and come into their own. It is lovely to witness and an honor to be a part of this faith-filled community.
Greetings from Our PRINCIPAL
This is a historic time for Mount de Sales Academy, as the construction of our Center for Performing Arts and Student Life (CPASL) has begun and is set for completion next year. Last year, through your generous dedication and support, we reached $5 million, enabling our capital campaign construction to begin. Our school community has shown this extraordinary commitment over and over again to the outstanding education our young women receive here. Together, we are making this building a reality for our students. My prayer is that the Center for Performing Arts and Student Life may be a continued source of blessings for young women now and for generations to come. The arts form culture, and culture forms us. I am so proud that our young women will now have their own space for this prime opportunity to grow and flourish through their participation in the arts. This year, we also launched a new philosophy program. The philosophy program will give our students essential tools to ground them solidly both in their academics and their human dignity. Within a few short months, our students are already applying their philosophy lessons, distinguishing themselves in their ability to think well, know who they are, and demonstrate leadership capacity in their maturity of thought. Our theme this year is, “I came so that they may have life, and may have it more abundantly” (Jn 10:10). Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He also has a dream for each of our students. My prayer is that each young person at Mount de Sales may live that dream, knowing how much she is infinitely loved by God and flourishing in that love. May we sail on this year in calm seas toward majestic horizons.
Sincerely in Christ,
Sister Mary Raymond, O.P.

Ceremonial Blessing Capping off a fun and festive Homecoming Day on Saturday, September 28, more than 160 guests assembled for the Center for Performing Arts and Student Life (CPASL) Ceremonial Blessing. Gathering by the convent provided an ideal vantage point to view the incredible growth of Mount de Sales Academy made possible by the capital campaign. Within the guests’ sights were:
• Phase I convent and 1852 building, outfitted with new heating and air conditioning, • Phase II athletic field and stadium seating, and • Phase III 1852 buliding improvements, namely the B-side fourth floor renovation and chapel expansion, as well as the CPASL literally on the horizon.
Board of Trustees Vice President and Facilities Committee Chair Tom Campbell P’14 elaborated on the features of the CPASL (see page 7). Principal Sister Mary Raymond, O.P., thanked everyone for their generosity. Senior Cecilia Canan ’20 represented the beneficiaries, stating, “I feel this home for the performing arts will provide more opportunities and inspiration for students to explore something they might not have before now. That is what keeps us moving forward and brings us to this momentous occasion, where we will be able to watch our Mount de Sales’ productions in our own space. I look forward to returning as an alumna to take part in the gifts of the past, present, and future within our community. I am honored to pass the baton to this new era for the arts at Mount de Sales.” The celebration concluded with a reading of 1 Peter 2:4–10 by Director of Operations Deacon Mark Cohagan P’07 ’11 and a blessing by Trustee Rev. Michael J.P. Roach. During the ceremony, each guest held a river stone that was blessed by Father Roach and personalized with names and special messages. These stones, representing the MDSA community who have made these projects possible through financial support and prayer, will be built into the foundation of the CPASL.
“Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a cornerstone, chosen and precious, and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame.” 1 Peter 2:6

Dear Friends of Mount de Sales Academy: The new school year is a time of fresh starts for everyone in our community, including the Board of Trustees. Your Board is excited to welcome new members, marvel at many completed and milestone facilities projects, and embrace continued progress for our students. It is my pleasure to welcome two new members to the Board of Trustees:
PRESIDENT of the Board UPDATES
Alumnae Board Members
Alumnae Board Members from left to right: Peggy Stromberg Pasquarella ’81, Lynda Geier Mules ’77 P’05 ’13, Kate Ohlmacher McAuliffe ’02, and Jackie Seboda Pfeiler ’86 P’23 Not Pictured: Liz Gibbons Jennings ’80 P’12 ’19
• Margaret Stromberg Pasquarella ’81, chief financial officer and director of human resources for 1919 Investment Counsel, LLC • Jacqueline Seboda Pfeiler ’86 P’23, vice president of finance for St. John Properties Peggy and Jackie understand what it means to be a Sailor and look forward to contributing their skills to MDSA’s continued improvement. One only needs to look around our campus to appreciate that it is a special time to be a part of MDSA. The facilities projects are certainly the most visible components of our growth. Work is underway on the Center for Performing Arts and Student Life (CPASL), along with many other completed campus improvements and additions. The CPASL, the final project of a three-phase capital campaign, is the largest undertaking since the completion of the monastery side of the main school building in 1883. The estimated Phase III cost is $12M. Reaching the $6M goal will lessen the financial burden on MDSA. To do this, we need every alumna, parent, and friend to consider their financial support of the campaign. Please, ask yourself, “How can I help Mount de Sales Academy during this historic time?” We need everyone to get involved! Whether you are a Mount de Sales Academy newcomer or long-time friend, we appreciate your role in our success. As we welcome back Principal Sister Mary Raymond, I would like to express my gratitude for her “freshman” year, during which she transitioned to our community, embraced the capital campaign effort, and grew the curriculum. Mount de Sales is successful because of our dedicated community, especially the Dominican Sisters.
Sincerely,
Brian P. MacLean P’14 President, Board of Trustees

‘‘Mount de Sales has become a place I’ve been able to blossom in my faith. Christ has really transformed me throughout my high school years, and I know He will continue to into my senior year. To be able to pray and discuss my faith openly with my peers in the classroom setting is a gift. Your generosity has touched my heart and changed my life.’’ Maria ’20

Students kicked off the celebration with a pep rally on Friday morning followed by the dance that evening. During Homecoming Day, crowds poured through the Gate House to enjoy the athletic games, family activities, good food, and a special campaign Ceremonial Blessing. The Parents’ Club Parking Posse dutifully directed traffic and members of the Alumnae Association rolled up their sleeves to make this one of the most memorable years to date. The Class of 1937 from left to right: Louise Payne, Phyllis Haegerty, Virginia Wingood Swann, Gladys Waters Conlon, Catherine Roloson Counselman, Constance Baker, Nancy Gardner Witte, Mary McNaney Leahy.
Catherine spent twelve formative years on campus, with fond memories of English classes, piano lessons from (Visitation) Sister Cecilia, tennis practice (there were tennis courts on campus!), and lifelong friendships. She was selected to play the piano at graduation and received a medal for “Excellence during Application, Cooperation, Discipline, Deportment, and Neatness”—very much the “Mount de Sales Girl” of her class! While focusing on her studies and other activities, Catherine met Charlie, a Mount Saint Joseph student and the love of her life, at a neighborhood party. She set off well prepared for the College of Notre Dame, graduating with a degree in economics and sociology. In September 1941, Catherine and Charlie married and went on to have four children, 12 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. Her family was her greatest joy and accomplishment. Catherine’s legacy lives on in her beautiful family, and, though she walked through the windows 82 years ago, she is always a Mount de Sales girl.
(Please make checks payable to Mount de Sales Academy. All gifts are tax deductible.)
In recent years, Catherine graciously shared her MDSA experiences with students and told stories of where life took her, including visiting six continents. In response to the girls’ asking advice on marriage and raising a family, she imparted, “Find someone with a wonderful disposition…. [and] enjoy doing things together.” Like me, the girls will treasure the Sailor Sisterhood and the privilege of seeing their school’s history through the eyes of someone who lived it generations ago.
Semi-Annually
Through our Mount de Sales connection, I was blessed to befriend Catherine. It was an honor and pleasure to share her recollections of our school and connect her to fellow Sailors of today.

“When did they take off the yellow paint?” Catherine Roloson Counselman ’37 asked me after we watched a video about Mount de Sales Academy. This little-known history signifies the extent of Catherine’s relationship with MDSA, beginning in 1925 as a first-grade student. Catherine passed away on July 17, 2019, just shy of her 100th birthday, leaving a beautiful legacy.
I would like to set up payment of my financial gift through use of appreciated securities (stocks, bonds, etc.). Please call me at (daytime phone number): ___________________________
