Greetings FROM THE
PRINCIPAL “THEREFORE, STAND FIRM AND HOLD FAST TO THE TRADITIONS THAT YOU WERE TAUGHT.” 2 THESSALONIANS 2:15 Dear Friends of Mount de Sales, In the last few weeks, we hosted a record crowd at our Communion Breakfast Mass, an event in which we welcome our new incoming Class of 2022. This is a nearly 20-year-old tradition, and it still inspires great numbers to meet for Mass and a meal together. We enjoyed many great community gatherings this year, some new and some old, with record attendance at the Christmas Bazaar and Spaghetti Dinner, Bag Bingo, the National March for Life, and the Black and White Dinner. This shared vibrancy has led us on the adventure to renovate the fourth floor, expand the chapel, and plan for the Center for Performing Arts and Student Life. Last spring many volunteers gathered to organize and clean the fourth floor in preparation for the renovation work of the summer. You can sense the many uses of this space through the years, now being prepared for classroom space for our students. The sounds of Latin, Spanish, and algebra will fill the rooms where once the Visitation Nuns, who established the first traditions at Mount de Sales, lived and prayed. I believe they would welcome the sounds of girls in those spaces this fall, laughing, learning, questioning, and growing. It is the cycle of vibrancy captured in our faith as we celebrate its greatest event, the death and Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. May this Easter season find you enjoying the glorious Resurrection and its fruit in your life.
Sincerely in Christ,
Sr. Mary Thomas, O.P. Principal

STEM IN T H E
STREAM This past fall, the STEM class explored a new curriculum that allowed students to take their learning outside. The focus was to engage students in a hands-on research project. After much discussion, the class decided that their research project would involve a local stream. Students worked in pairs to choose a specific parameter for their research and planned their projects. On stream visit days, the class put on their boots and walked down to the stream located between the Grilled Cheese & Co. restaurant and the Royal Farms store on Edmondson Avenue. Students collected data on the air and water temperatures, dissolved oxygen levels, nitrate and phosphate levels, and turbidity. Other groups focused on life in the stream and collected samples of phytoplankton and macroinvertebrates. The stream research project gave the students a glimpse into what actual research encompasses. The students had to learn how to use various types of equipment and how to best maneuver along a stream bank and in the stream itself to keep their equipment dry. Student groups were expected to be prepared for field work, to work efficiently within a time constraint, and to share results with their classmates. The STEM students also learned that research does not always go as planned and that scientists need to be flexible. This pilot curriculum paved the way for a new science class, Research in Science, which will begin in the fall of 2018.

RELIGION | AUGUST 1997
What makes MDSA different from other places where I have taught is the solid, grounded practice of the Catholic faith. I love that MDSA offers regular Mass and confessions, and the sweet smiles of the girls always brighten my day. I am forever indebted to Fr. Michael Roach, MDSA Trustee Emeritus, for bringing me to Mount de Sales.
PAT MARLATT
ENGLISH | AUGUST 1999
MDSA is contributing to the Catholic Church as a whole by forming young women in the faith. They are the present and future of the Catholic Church and I am proud to be a part of this work. The students are the best part of my job. They challenge me and invigorate me; they keep me young and give me a reason to get out of bed in the morning!
HOWARD POSNER MATH | SEPTEMBER 2001
Mount de Sales Academy focuses on an integration of academic, religious, and leadership qualities that transform the girls into wellrounded young women, preparing them for college and their future lives. My favorite aspect of working here is the joy of teaching at a school where I have the support of the staff and administration which brings out the best in me.
Through the years, Mount de Sales has been blessed by many longstanding teachers. These teachers consistently demonstrate their commitment and fidelity to MDSA and its students. The longevity of their careers here is out of love and dedication to our mission. Their enthusiasm and adaptability have had a powerful impact on students, colleagues, and the community, and we are grateful for each one of them.
LIZ JOHNSON SOCIAL SCIENCE | AUGUST 1999 The people that make up the community of Mount de Sales are special and are all invested in this unique place. We genuinely care and want the best for one another and for this institution. We have supported one another compassionately through personal tragedies and loss. We celebrate each other’s accomplishments with pride. Our greatest strength is us.
MARY AGNES JOPSON FINE ARTS | SEPTEMBER 2000
The presence of Jesus is evident in the people whose hearts have been captured by a love and a calling to work at or attend MDSA. They are the fantastic students; humble, dedicated staff and custodians; and the knowledgeable, inspiring teachers. I treasure working with the Dominican Sisters.

I love teaching in a wonderfully vibrant Catholic environment. It is a gift to go to Mass in our beautiful chapel in the morning before school and then just walk a few steps to my classroom. Saying prayers at the start of class and listening to all the girls’ special intentions is meaningful to me. Moreover, sharing my thoughts, feelings, and experiences as a child of God in response to a piece of literature we are reading is unmatchable. VIEW FROM THE CUPOLA | 5

MARCH FOR
LIFE
In the early hours of January 19, over 220 Mount de Sales students and chaperones headed to Washington, D.C., for the March for Life. Six full buses of Sailor warriors gathered with hundreds of thousands of people, mostly youth, from all over the United States to stand for and celebrate life. The first stop was the Capital One Arena for the Youth Rally, where cardinals, bishops, priests, deacons, religious brothers and sisters, and several thousand youth gathered for prayer, music, confession, and Mass. Following the rally, our students

headed to Constitution Avenue to kick off the March. A sea of Sailors in blue and white striped hats marched together, prayed together, cheered together, and even sang our MDSA school song together all throughout the March. At the end of the day, many tired feet, but not tired spirits, found their way back to the buses. As the joy, songs, and smiles continued, we traveled home to MDSA. It was an inspiring day to be a part of and a tremendous witness of life from our Sailors! – Annie M. McDonald, Campus Minister

B I N G O THE PARENTS’ CLUB held its first-ever Designer Bag Bingo on January 6. We had a sell-out crowd of 300 join us for an afternoon of fun and prizes. Lucky winners took home purses by Michael Kors, Coach, and Kate Spade. We held raffles, and one fortunate bingo player won over $600 on the 50-50 raffle. Many people from our MDSA family and local businesses contributed to the success of this event by donating items and their time. Thanks to these efforts we exceeded our goal of raising $10,000 to help fund Prom Palooza, this year’s after prom party. - Diane Brinkley P'20 and Valerie Queensberry P'20, Co-Chairs
CHRISTMAS BAZAAR AND SPAGHETTI DINNER Nearly 200 parent and student volunteers supported the Parents’ Club at this year’s Christmas Bazaar and Spaghetti Dinner. The “S’getti Crew” served more than 1,000 meals of delicious spaghetti, salad, Italian bread and cannolis. Visiting alumnae reminisced when they spotted their class graduation photos. Our dedicated Craft Committee filled the Music Hall with beautiful, handmade holiday and decorative items. Granny’s Goodies offered a variety of scrumptious homemade treats, and the Silent Auction featured beautiful themed baskets. After sharing their wish lists with Santa, our youngest visitors headed to Santa’s Secret Shop to find presents for their parents. Students sang Christmas songs, and the dance ensemble artfully performed the Nativity. Thank you to all our committed volunteers who helped make this a successful and cherished event! - Eileen Delaney ‘19, Chair

THE HILLS ARE ALIVE! WINTER MUSICAL: THE SOUND OF MUSIC
In a departure from the past few years of fairy tales and princesses, Mount de Sales Academy took on The Sound of Music for the 2018 winter musical. A story of the power of faith, love, and family, this production gave both performers and patrons a moving experience. Leading the cast was the incredible talent of Delaney Tacka ’18. Delaney’s strong vocals, paired with her immersive character acting, fully embodied the beloved Maria Von Trapp. The Von Trapp family dynamic portrayed by Anna Grace Ryan ’19, Samantha Sheldon ‘19, Sophie Palmer ’19, Naomi Brinker ’20, Julia Middleton ’18, and Hannah Austin ’18, was wonderful to watch. Rebekah Balick ’18 gave a lovely performance as Elsa Schraeder. As Mother Abbess, Mary Langley ’18 inspired all present to find their dreams with her operatic “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.” The chorus of nuns and postulants were coached in their beautiful Latin chant by Mr. Jeff Hosier (who also conducted the amazing pit band). They received further expert coaching from Sr. Maris Stella and Sr. Marie Genevieve on posture and disposition. Mount de Sales girls have the privilege of constant interaction with the Dominican Sisters, giving them the ability to portray this story in a genuine way. Party dancers, as well as Maria and the Captain (Craig Rodgers, MSJ ’18), learned some of the Austrian waltz, the Laendler, to bring even more authenticity. Backstage, Emma Jendrek ’18 acted as costume mistress while Josie Hyde ’18 led the crew with guidance from alumna Mary Morency ’15, currently studying musical theatre in New York City. The MDSA Theatre Arts class, taught by Mrs. Kelly Cardall ’93, provided a series of projections on handmade screens throughout the performance. This technology enhanced the production by extending the scenery, displaying historical propaganda, and ultimately showing photographs of the real Von Trapps. The audience was reminded that this true story shows the resilience and patriotism of a family whose homeland was attacked but chose to stay true to themselves. The entire team of directors, led by Mrs. Rosie Bacon, are so proud of the incredible work of more than 100 students in the cast, crew, and pit band. Every performance was sold out in advance, which is a testament to the reputation of MDSA musicals bringing beautiful, family-friendly, professional productions to the community. We continue to pray for the Capital Campaign and look forward to the day when the students can perform in our very own well-deserved Center for the Performing Arts and Student Life. - Angela Romeo ’94 P’18 Producer/Choreographer/Dance Teacher Additional photography by Colleen Middleton P’18

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
10 | VIEW FROM THE CUPOLA
CELEBRATING MOUNT DE SALES Mount de Sales Academy celebrated National Catholic Schools Week January 28–February 3. This year’s theme, Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed., focused on the important spiritual, academic, and societal contributions provided by a Catholic education. Through the designated themes each day, we emphasized the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to the Church, local communities, and the nation.
MONDAY Catholic education thrives on the support of parents, guardians, and other family members in our community. Not only do they sacrifice to make Catholic education possible, but they also instill values and expectations for academic excellence. To recognize community, students enjoyed dressing up as various members of a family.
TUESDAY Appreciation was the word of the day! We celebrated our wonderful students by serving delicious cookies and sharing time together. Each grade displayed spirit by wearing their class colors: seniors in blue, juniors in red, sophomores in yellow, and freshmen in green.
WEDNESDAY Catholic school supporters recognize the value of Catholic education for our nation. Therefore, red, white, and blue was the dress code for the day. Students enjoyed a friendly game of MDSA trivia using the Kahoot! game-based learning platform.
THURSDAY Catholic schools prepare young people to use their God-given talents in order to live life to its fullest through seeking their vocations. On this day, students sported character or favorite biblical costumes. Spirit points were awarded to the homeroom that wore the most biblical costumes.
FRIDAY We honor faculty, administration, and staff for their important work and thank all who provide volunteer service. To acknowledge this hardworking group, students dressed in their Sunday best as we celebrated Mass together.

ALUMNAE SPOTLIGHT
CHRISTINA EICHELMAN GORDON ’07
One of my first Mount de Sales memories is the day I received my acceptance letter. Instead of excitement, I felt stressed. The truth is, I secretly hoped that if I did not get into MDSA, I could attend another school. I realize now this moment set the stage for the rest of my life. If you look at my MDSA class list, you will find resumes filled with accomplishments. Personally, after completing my B.S. in nursing and becoming a registered nurse, I became both a Critical Care and Stroke Certified Registered Nurse. The academic preparation at MDSA is top notch; however, being successful is much more than study tactics and time management. This is where MDSA excels. By fostering emotional and moral well-being, students and alumnae are empowered to be the best women we can be. My husband Shawn and I married in 2013. Even though we dated through his time at the Naval Academy and flight school, my adventure as a military spouse was just beginning. Immediately, we received orders to move to Hawaii, and Shawn deployed two weeks after our arrival. We spent the first six months of our marriage on opposite sides of the world. He jokes that at least he left me in Hawaii! We persevered and then endured an almost eight-month deployment a year later. In Honolulu, I worked in a Neuro Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Facing the trying situations and sometimes depressing outcomes, I remembered the example set by the Dominican Sisters of unwavering, loving faith. My faith has allowed me to work well in the ICU environment and as a military spouse. When things seem overwhelming, I am reminded, “Trust the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5) The Dominican Sisters showed me how to be honest, kind, and confident. They were unapologetically themselves. Sr. Andrea Marie was the baking master behind “Sailor Cookies,” Sr. Patrick Stephen wore her workout apron on the basketball court, and Sr. Mary Leonard was a listening ear for everything, from schoolwork to dating. Such relationships make a lasting impression on young women. Friendships are a part of my backbone, especially since I have moved several times and am thousands of miles from home. From the Sisters’ example, I connect with people of every race and religion, even with a huge language barrier. After three years in Hawaii, we received orders to go to Japan. Again, I felt steadfast that the Lord had a plan. I volunteer with the Red Cross and teach English to Japanese people of all ages. Recently, I traveled to Nepal as a volunteer nurse. In one of the most incredible, yet trying, experiences, I never felt more strongly my faith working through me. I owe MDSA and the Dominican Sisters my faith, resiliency, and open heart. I proudly wear my school ring to this day and carry the spirit of Mount de Sales around the world. VIEW FROM THE CUPOLA | 13

ANNUAL
REPORT OF DONORS 2016-2017

FROM THE
PRESIDENT Dear Community of Mount de Sales Academy, Our Annual Report of Donors is more than an acknowledgement; it is a celebration of generosity. This year, we have much to celebrate! The financial support of benefactors, large and small, has enabled us to accomplish a great deal at Mount de Sales Academy. Most impressive this year has been the sacrificial giving of those who jumped in to give early support during the Pacesetter, also known as the Silent, Phase of our Capital Campaign. The Pacesetter Phase of the Anchored in Excellence. Charting our Future. Capital Campaign for Mount de Sales Academy has positioned us for success. Sr. Mary Thomas has said, and we all agree, that what makes Mount de Sales special is the people: those who stepped up and did not allow the school to close; those who helped us achieve the excellent school we have today; and now those who are giving of themselves to propel us into the future. A great deal of gratitude is owed to the more than 70 volunteers representing alumnae, current and past parents, grandparents, and friends of Mount de Sales who have led this Pacesetter Phase alongside our Advancement Team and Administration. We are grateful for their service and hope their example will inspire others to serve in the Public Phase. It is exciting to share that our Pacesetter Phase is going better than expected and will exceed our $3.5 million goal. This spring we are preparing for the Public Phase of the campaign, which will launch with the 2018-2019 school year. Our success is tangible. You can visit the renovated Gate House and witness the vibrancy of our historic campus. Our solid financial foundation enabled us to pay for the renovation out of our operating budget, and teamwork made this happen on time and under budget. It is no longer a question of will it happen, but rather, when will it happen? The fourth floor renovation and chapel expansion are underway and will be ready for use next school year! The Center for Performing Arts and Student Life will begin the approximately 14-month construction when $5 million is committed in pledges with $2.5 million received. Please consider how you can support the Capital Campaign through service, financial support, and prayer. We need and welcome volunteer leaders from all our constituencies to help make this a success for the students of Mount de Sales Academy. They deserve this, and, with your help, they will achieve an even greater potential with these improved facilities.
Sincerely,
Brian P. MacLean P’14 President | Board of Trustees

A LEAP OF
Faith MDSA HONORS FAITHFUL BENEFACTORS AT THE SCHOLARSHIP BREAKFAST Benefactor funded scholarships impact dozens of Mount de Sales Academy students and families. The individuals who fund these scholarships partner with our mission to develop the great potential within each student. To express our gratitude for this important work, Mount de Sales held its fifth annual Scholarship Breakfast on the morning of March 14. Benefactors representing 11 scholarships gathered with student recipients for breakfast and to hear from speakers, including Director of Development Claire Cohagan ’78, English teacher and scholarship benefactor Pat Marlatt, scholarship recipient Maryanne Macdonald ’19, and Principal Sr. Mary Thomas, O.P. Maryanne Macdonald ’19, recipient of the Semper Fi Scholarship and the St. Martin de Porres Scholarship, shared her powerful story with those present of how scholarships made it possible for her to attend Mount de Sales. There are no better words than Maryanne’s to thank our many scholarship benefactors who took a “leap of faith... in generously donating their money to the education of countless girls they themselves might not know. Yet because of their leap of faith, I was able to take mine.” If you are interested in supporting scholarship at Mount de Sales Academy, please contact Claire Cohagan ‘78, director of development, at 410.744.8498 ext. 126 or ccohagan@mountdesales.org.

ARCHBISHOP HARRY J. FLYNN, D.D.,
SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED 1
2
Mount de Sales Academy is excited to announce the newly created Archbishop Harry J. Flynn, D.D., Scholarship. Established by the Roohan Family to honor their good friend, Archbishop Harry J. Flynn, D.D, the scholarship will provide financial assistance to a prospective or existing MDSA student who would otherwise be unable to attend. This criterion underscores the importance Archbishop Flynn places on all the religious orders and the education they provide. As a young boy, orphaned by the early death of his parents, Flynn attended Catholic school where he was shepherded by the Sisters of St. Joseph. They built on the faith foundation laid by Flynn’s mother and provided him with much needed care and guidance, without which, he recalled, “I often wonder how I would have made it.” This experience began a lifelong devotion to the spiritual formation of clergy, religious, and lay people. Archbishop Flynn was further renowned for his pastoral kindness and attentiveness to each individual. His legacy continues at MDSA through the generosity of the Roohan Family, as they aptly honor his good works by enabling young women to receive a Catholic education and experience first-hand the caring formation of our own Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia.

YOUR PARTICIPATION
Matters
The Your Participation Matters Campaign was developed over ten years ago to help cultivate the spirit of philanthropy in our students. Our goal is to build a greater understanding of the Annual Fund that supports the following: tuition assistance; providing a wide range of extracurricular activities; and maintaining and enhancing historic buildings and campus.
