Greetings from our
Principal
Dear Friends of Mount de Sales Academy, As the school year draws to a close, I am amazed at how Mount de Sales Academy already feels like home. I know I am not alone in feeling this way. Though our girls only spend four relatively short years here, alumnae tell me again and again of the foundation they received at MDSA and how, long after graduation, these halls still feel like home. Generations have given their efforts, time, money, and prayers to further God’s work at MDSA. The stories I hear today are the fruits of their faithful labors. It is an honor to continue this legacy as we work toward the same mission which founded this school 167 years ago. Every year in the Annual Report of Donors, we recognize and thank the students, alumnae, parents, businesses, and friends who currently give to continue the mission of Mount de Sales Academy. This issue recognizes more than 1,300 people from various upbringings, vocations, hometowns, and even faiths who all united behind this one purpose. From heating the building to expanding curriculum to constructing a new Center for Performing Arts and Student Life, your gifts make this and more possible. Knowing this school’s strong foundation and vibrant community excites me for the future. Thanks to your support, I know Mount de Sales will continue providing excellent Catholic education and the best possible resources to help each girl reach her full potential. Thank you for being part of this family and for your gifts to further the work of Mount de Sales Academy.
Sincerely in Christ,
Sister Mary Raymond, O.P.

Updates
Dear Friends of Mount de Sales Academy, This Annual Report of Donors represents what makes Mount de Sales Academy special – the committed individuals within our small community. Fundraising experts will tell you that raising money at girls’ schools is inherently more difficult. Considering our comparatively low number of living alumnae (4,077) and high percentage of young alumnae (51% are under 35 years of age), they would advise measured expectations for fundraising success. These assumptions, however, do not take into account the tenacity of MDSA. Mount de Sales has never backed down from a challenge. Shortly after the school opened, the Visitation Nuns were concerned that the school would not survive the Civil War. We did survive and later persevered through the Great Depression and other turbulent times and changes of administration. Today, when Catholic school enrollment is on a decline nationally, we have robust class sizes. Rather than setting our expectations low, we encourage our community to rise to the occasion. We are emboldened by our belief that “With God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). The enclosed list acknowledges donors who supported Mount de Sales Academy between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018. If you are included in this list, thank you again. If not, please consider making MDSA a philanthropic priority because you now know that every donor and every gift plays an important role in our continued success. Your generosity can be transformative in a unique way at Mount de Sales! Thank you for your support, service, and prayers for Mount de Sales Academy!
With gratitude,
Brian MacLean P’14 President, Board of Trustees

Capital Campaign Updates
The third and final phase of the Anchored in Excellence. Charting our Future. Capital Campaign has reached a tremendous milestone worthy of celebration!
A
In order to begin planning for construction, $5 million in pledges was required. We have achieved this goal with $5.1 MILLION, allowing anticipated construction to begin this summer (see graph B).
Total Cost
• Center for Performing Arts and Student Life (CPASL) construction
• Chapel of St. Francis de Sales expansion
• B-side (monastery) fourth-floor renovation
• Elevator replacement • Exterior staircase
• Science Research Lab
$2.2 MILLION
$13 MILLION
Center for Performing Arts and Student Life
We are on the brink of accomplishing a dream conceived in 1996 for a Fine Arts Building, now re-conceptualized as the Center for Performing Arts and Student Life (CPASL). For the first time in our history, Mount de Sales Academy will be able to put on a full-scale production on our campus and students can present from a stage. Flexible space will allow for small and large group gatherings. Phase III Capital Campaign, launched in the spring of 2017, includes:
Fourth-Floor Renovation, Chapel Expansion, Elevator Replacement, Exterior Staircase, and Science Research Lab
$10.8 MILLION
B
Your help is still needed!
The estimated total cost of these projects is $13 million (see graph A). Economic forces have resulted in increased construction costs from the originally projected $10-12 million. It is financially advantageous and in the best interest of our students to begin construction this summer.
$ $5M
The scope of work and cost for the CPASL is the largest undertaking for Mount de Sales Academy since building our school.
$4M $3M $2M
As we celebrate, our work continues! Additional funding will lessen the financial burden on MDSA. Please consider making a gift or pledge to the capital campaign. Interested in learning more about the capital campaign or other ways you can make a difference at Mount de Sales Academy? Please contact Beth Saverino ’87, director of advancement, at esaverino@mountdesales.org or 410.744.8498 x139 6 | Annual Report 17-18
Phase III Capital Campaign as of Jan. 31, 2019
$5.1
MILLION
$1M
Did you Know? In addition to funds shown on graph B, there is almost $2 million raised in a prior Fine Arts Campaign for the CPASL.
Sharing the Story CAPITAL CAMPAIGN VOLUNTEER DINNER As the campaign total ticked upward, an amazing team of volunteers was working hard behind the scenes to fuel that success. During the public phase over 130 alumnae, parents, grandparents, and friends gave their time and effort to ensure we reached $5 million by December 31. Due in large part to these volunteers, we exceeded that goal! Our campaign team was tasked with spreading the word about the campaign by inviting the community to get involved. This past fall you may have spoken with a volunteer, received a phone call or letter, or attended a campaign reception that they hosted. Collectively, our team made personal outreach like this to hundreds of alumnae, parents, friends, and businesses in order to achieve their goal. This unprecedented approach would not have been possible without a dedicated team of volunteers. Our volunteers have strengthened old friendships, fostered new relationships, and, though they may not have realized it, carried out the vision set forth in the 2013-2018 Strategic Plan to “spread the story of Mount de Sales regionally, nationally, and internationally.” Their work to engage the community will continue to bless MDSA long after this project is complete. A celebration was in order! On January 15, Principal Sister Mary Raymond, Board of Trustees President Brian MacLean, and Director of Advancement Beth Saverino ‘87 hosted a Public Phase Campaign Volunteer Dinner to acknowledge and personally thank them for their momentous accomplishments. A Big Decision with a Bigger Impact

ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION MAKES HISTORIC GIFT TO THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN The Mount de Sales Academy Alumnae Association proudly made a $55,000 pledge to the Anchored in Excellence. Charting our Future. Capital Campaign. This is the largest gift in their history! Giving back to their alma mater motivates members of the Alumnae Association. They are grateful for the foundation they received as students that continues to bless them as alumnae. This group of women hosts several events throughout the year to raise scholarship money for current students. When they heard about the capital campaign, the Alumnae Association seized the opportunity to give a remarkable gift to all their Sailor sisters. 8 | Annual Report 17-18
“I am blown away by their generosity!” says Elizabeth Mahon ’07, director of alumnae relations. “Because their fall events were so successful, you could tell they were eager to impact the campaign in a big way.” By making a pledge of this magnitude, which they plan to pay over a period of three years, the Alumnae Association demonstrated once again their incredible commitment to the students of Mount de Sales.
The Alumnae Association welcomes alumnae from every generation to further the mission of Mount de Sales. For more information, please email Director of Alumnae Relations Elizabeth Binette Mahon ’07 at emahon@mountdesales.org.
My journey back to Mount de Sales began a few years ago when my sister sent me an email for the Crab Feast. It had been quite a few years since either of us had been on campus, and we were very excited to attend. As fate would have it, our dear father passed away the week of the event, and we couldn’t bring ourselves to enjoy the festivities. I called and spoke to Elizabeth Mahon ‘07, director of alumnae relations, and told her we would not be attending. All who know Elizabeth and Beth Saverino ‘87, director of advancement, know what it is like to get caught up in their enthusiasm for Mount de Sales. My parents were so involved in Mount de Sales and the dreams the Parents’ Club had for our alma mater; after losing them, I wanted to be a part of what I remembered and the place I belonged. Mount de Sales embodies my beginnings.
Maureen McShane 1980
It is the place where I dared to be more than who I thought I was, where I made mistakes and accomplished goals, where my presence was welcomed. It is the place I welcomed into my heart. Being a part of this Capital Campaign and walking through the halls of Mount de Sales grounds me; it is a blessing for me to share my time and strengths with the girls and the community at large. I will always feel the pull of the place where I grew into a young woman, the place I look back to when I need to feel confident and reassured. I am home again.
Coming Home Again Alumnae Share Their Stories In my senior year at Mount de Sales, a banner hung in my math class that read, “To whom much is given, much is expected.” My four years at Mount de Sales gave me a lot, including a foundation in my faith, opportunities for my future, and invaluable friendships. The memories I made are the first things that come to mind when I think about growing up in the area and the idea of home: Saturdays spent working at the snowball stand with friends from school, weeknight soccer games, studying in the locker rooms, and driving around with friends because we were just happy hanging out together. Without realizing it at the time, the challenges, education, and friendships from Mount de Sales shaped us into the people we were meant to be in life.
Meg McCawley 2010
After college, joining the Alumnae Association seemed like a great way to stay involved with Mount de Sales, and maybe it was a piece of what “much is expected” meant. With the purpose of raising money for student scholarships, the Alumnae Association plans events to raise money throughout the year in fun ways like the Crab Feast and Homecoming. At the end of each year, we are able to award students financial assistance so they can continue attending our muchtreasured alma mater. While
the students are incredibly grateful, they do not realize that it is just as much of a gift to us. Even today, Mount de Sales continues to give me the gift of community and friendship. I hope the work of the Alumnae Association will help current students feel the same way I do: that Mount de Sales is not just a place for education, but also forever a community that feels like home. What is Annual Giving? An annual gift is exactly what it sounds like – typically a yearly gift to fund MDSA’s most pressing needs. When many, many gifts of all sizes are pooled together, they make a big impact for our students.
Why Support the MDSA Annual Giving Campaign? We hope MDSA is your philanthropic priority. Look at the impact you can make by donating to the Annual Giving Campaign!
Scholarship Support
Academic Expansion
Forty percent of students receive some form of tuition assistance. As an economically diverse school, scholarship assistance is often essential for families who otherwise could not afford tuition.
Annual Giving enables MDSA to enhance academic offerings. In 2019-2020, MDSA will offer a newly created Philosophy Department. Annual Giving support makes this possible!
Safety and Security
Your Giving Priorities
MDSA continues a multi-year plan to improve students’ safety and security. For the 2019-2020 school year and forward, you will see noticeable security enhancements on campus that are partially funded by Annual Giving.

MDSA was an amazing choice for my daughter’s high school. She grew academically, socially, and spiritually. She became a poised, confident woman upon graduation. I hope others can benefit from MDSA and want to support the school.

I think the greatest gift our students receive is the appreciation for how they will fit into the world they are about to enter. The focus on the whole woman, the spirituality of her development, the understanding of how important faith is to her life, and the formation of lasting friendships are gifts she can carry forward into life.

Mount de Sales has given so much to me. I am grateful and want to help it continue for future young women. Although the education provided at MDSA is outstanding, the attention given to enriching each student’s whole person is even more invaluable.

Mount de Sales is not only formation for faith and college -- it is also formation for life! My time at MDSA shaped and strengthened my vision, goals, and ability to serve others in every aspect of my life, as a volunteer, a professional, and a mom. As women of faith, we owe it to all our daughters to make sure that Mount de Sales is there for them, too!
