Greetings FROM THE

PRINCIPAL “MAN, THE ONLY EARTHLY BEING GOD HAS WILLED FOR ITSELF, FINDS HIMSELF BY THE SINCERE GIFT OF HIMSELF.” - GAUDIUM ET SPES #24 Dear Friends of Mount de Sales Academy, As I moved between tables at our Fall Festival, I noticed a theme emerging: many of our student groups were raising funds to help people outside of Mount de Sales. The Global Outreach Club raised funds and awareness to help Puerto Ricans still without power, food, or electricity. The art classes collected donations to ship portraits of children in a Syrian refugee camp back to them. The students’ obvious enthusiasm for their causes highlighted a truth known by St. John Paul II: a human person is most fulfilled when she gives of herself in service. This truth has shone through the generations at Mount de Sales. MDSA was established by Visitation Nuns whose leadership anchored this school in faith, service, and academic excellence. We know the stories of those whose dedicated service saved Mount de Sales in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, we continue to live the charism of a community that pitches in and steps up, working together to accomplish extraordinary goals. From our students applying their knowledge, talents, and time to serve each other and their community, to our parents, faculty and staff, Board of Trustees, alumnae, and friends whose sacrificial leadership has set the pace for a promising future, this edition of the View from the Cupola highlights some of the ways our community is sharing of their gifts, time, and talent to make amazing things happen on our campus and beyond. I hope you enjoy the stories as they are told by the protagonists themselves.

Sincerely in Christ,

Sr. Mary Thomas, O.P. Principal

Memory THE

PROJE CT

This year, the Portfolio students are taking part in the Memory Project, a nonprofit organization that invites art teachers and their students to create portraits of children throughout the world who have faced substantial challenges such as violence, neglect, war, loss of parents, and poverty. This year’s Memory Project focuses on children living in the largest Syrian refugee camp, Zaatari, located in Jordan, and was a natural outgrowth of last year’s Empathy Project, in which we viewed the film Children of Syria. Since the Syrian civil war began in 2011, the United Nations estimates that more than 400,000 Syrians have been killed and more than five million have fled the country to escape the violence. The Zaatari camp houses more than 80,000 Syrians, two-thirds of whom are women and children. Many of the children we are drawing cannot even remember what life was like in Syria, since they have been in the camp for so long. The students are very excited to work on these portraits. The girls researched what it means to be a refugee, and they are finding out about the toll conflict and violence creates for young people all over the world. Much of what we are learning about for this project is echoed in other classes, especially Sr. Joan of Arc’s World Geography class, so this has taken on a cross-curricular nature. The girls have really taken ownership of this project. They held fundraisers for the Memory Project and are excited about the prospect of creating very special portraits for 53 Syrian refugee children. The Memory Project has given the students a concrete, tangible way to help those in need. By: Eileen Clements, Fine Arts Department Chair

COMMENDED STUDENTS Congratulations to seniors Rebekah Balick and Alicia Moylan, who were recognized as Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit® Scholarship Program. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test®. 8

Their ability to perform well is rooted in the education they received. It is also a testament to our faculty who ensure that our girls are aptly prepared to think critically, not just for PSATs and SATs, but also for college and life.”

Q&

A

TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW ROLE AS VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR.

In this role, I identify and recruit volunteers who will support our mission. I am also the liaison for Parents’ Club, 1852 Crew, Dads with Grads, and other MDSA volunteer groups. Each day, parents amaze me with their generosity of time, talent, and prayer, and I am thrilled when parents ask how they can become involved.

HOW HAS MDSA BENEFITED FROM VOLUNTEERISM? By volunteering at MDSA, you are investing in a school that gives so much to our girls each day, and the results are tangible. Volunteerism assists in keeping our tuition in the lower one-third of Catholic schools in the area. Recently, volunteers saved us thousands of dollars on the Gate House renovation by painting, sanding and staining floors, installing trim, and setting up the Sailor Shop.

WHEN IT COMES TO VOLUNTEERISM, WHAT MAKES THE MDSA COMMUNITY UNIQUE? When Mount de Sales experienced hard times in the past, our community pulled together to save the school.

with Volunteer Coordinator KIM DIGNAN P‘12 ‘14 That same spirit carries on today, and volunteerism is just as crucial now as Mount de Sales embarks on its next journey to renovate the fourth floor, expand the chapel, and construct the Center for Performing Arts and Student Life. Best of all, volunteering at MDSA is a ton of fun! Some of my closest friends are those with whom I have worked side by side at our events.

WHAT TYPE OF VOLUNTEERS DO YOU NEED, AND HOW DOES SOMEONE GET INVOLVED? We need of all types of volunteers, from baking to landscaping or painting. The list is endless! That said, I understand how busy our families are, which is why I have adopted the slogan, “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.” Service is a part of the MDSA experience for our students, and we wish it to be the same for our families. Please prayerfully consider how you can share your talents with us. Together we can keep MDSA alive for generations to come. Questions? Please contact me at kdignan@mountdesales.org. I would love to help you determine the right fit based on your interests and availability.

DID YOU KNOW MDSA HAS A COMMUNITY SITE? If you haven’t visited the site, it’s time to take a look! Parents, past parents, alumnae, grandparents, and friends can all use the Community Site to update your contact information, view your giving history, and sign up to volunteer with different groups on campus. We encourage everyone to take advantage of the information on this site and hope it will help us grow together as a community! Please visit MOUNTDESALES.THANKYOU4CARING.ORG to register today! 9

PRESERVING THE

Past

Gate House UPGRADE Campus improvements are underway and are already positively affecting students this school year. The historic Gate House underwent several structural changes over the summer, and the renovation is complete. It now accommodates the following new spaces:

• Business Offices • Board Room • Kitchen • Sailor Shop • Restrooms and Snack Shop 10

PREPARING FOR THE

Future

More SEATING

Moving the Sailor Shop to the Gate House allowed for expanded cafeteria space, which alleviates break and lunchtime crowding. Additionally, the students now appreciate time together on the new outdoor tables in the Piazza.

Additional

CLASSROOMS

Admissions OFFICES

Relocating the Business Suite made way for Admissions to expand into the available space. The Admissions team now enjoys more time with the girls in their new location across from the principal’s office!

Renovations on the fourth floor also started this past summer, and the anticipated completion date is August 2018. This will conclude one of the three capital campaign projects taking place over the next few years. Did you know that the third and fourth floors of the 1852 Building were previously used to board students in the late 1800s and early 1900s? Here is a photo of a private student’s room circa early 1900. A limited number of private rooms were available to students for an extra fee.

Restorative R E T R E A T S “Come away by yourselves to an out of the way place and rest a while.” - MARK 6:31

Jesus speaks these words to us today just as He spoke them to His disciples 2,000 years ago. At Mount de Sales we follow Jesus’ invitation in a real way by offering annual retreats for each grade. Each retreat incorporates developmental elements that build from year to year. In tandem with the campus minister, teams of students take an active leadership

12

role to help plan and run the retreats. In prayer, we tailor each retreat to meet the students where they are and challenge them to grow in their faith and human formation.

each student to follow Jesus’ example in a more tangible way, since all of us are called to holiness and to approach our vocation with sainthood in mind.

The sacraments are the core of each retreat. From there we build in dynamic speakers, time for the girls to have fun and bond with one another, opportunities for silent reflection, and group conversations with their peers. The students have the chance to temporarily step back from their daily distractions and enter into a more relaxed atmosphere where a deeper relationship with God can be fostered. The retreat opportunities at MDSA challenge

It is a great treasure and blessing to have these retreat opportunities at Mount de Sales, putting into action the command Jesus gave His disciples and following the example He set for us. By: Annie M. McDonald, Campus Minister

FALL INTO THE SPIRIT! Fall Fest is a big deal at Mount de Sales! Students celebrate class spirit, compete for spirit points, and elect their Powder Puff princesses and queen at the annual talent show. Clubs also coordinate booths and sell food to raise money for their activities or causes. This year, the Global Outreach Club sold sausage and beans to raise money for hurricane-devastated Puerto Rico. The Equine Club sold trail mix and caramel apples to support Maryland Therapeutic Riding, and Sodality sold delicious homemade cinnamon buns to raise money for their annual trip to the Saint Cecilia motherhouse in Nashville. Blending student initiative, involvement, and charity into fun festivities are hallmarks of our Sailors.

Reaching Out

REACHING IN

REBUILDING IN WEST VIRGINA

Cydney HOWARD ‘18 Over the summer, 12 girls from Mount de Sales, myself included, went to West Virginia to volunteer on a week-long trip with Great Greenbrier Long Term Recovery Center. We helped to rebuild from the flood that occurred last June. Throughout our five work days, we painted ceilings and walls, cleaned gutters, power-washed sidewalks, and stained and installed a fence for a family whose house had been badly damaged during the flood. Other tasks included moving and laying sod and mulch, Tyvek-ing a house, cutting lawns, and assembling furniture. This entire experience helped us to be truly grateful for everything we have and give back to those less fortunate than us.

ARCHITECTURE AND RENOVATIONS

Camille KREISEL ‘18 The Gate House renovations and fourth floor improvements became an opportunity for me to pursue my interests in architecture. Reaching out to Sr. Mary Thomas, I initiated a summer internship that allowed me to experience a professional work environment right at Mount de Sales. Director of Facilities Deacon Mark Cohagan gave me increasing freedom to review project documents, compare drawings to existing field conditions, and create layouts for a new side chapel and sacristy. I tracked renovation progress in the Gate House and the fourth floor projects and got my hands dirty painting classrooms and hallways throughout the 1852 Building. Through this internship, I gained valuable insight into my desired professional interests which solidified my decision to pursue architecture in college.

GLOBAL HEALTH INITIATIVE IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Camila BOSENBERG ‘18

Over the summer, I traveled to the Dominican Republic on a global health initiative to run medical brigades. I took on the tasks that many nurses and pharmacists perform in the United States, including guiding patients, taking vitals, and dispensing medication. In addition, I built labs for the local communities and interacted with community members. By helping them, I was able to understand the social, economic, and health hardships that Dominicans face daily. Through my mission work, I learned the value of every individual and the dignity that each person possesses.

President UPDATES

Dear Friends of Mount de Sales, Happy New Year to you, our Mount de Sales Academy family! In 2018, you will see the continued growth of one of our greatest strengths: people willing to give their time, talent, and treasure for the benefit of our students. It is my honor to announce that Tim Dignan P’12 ‘14 and Tom Brinker P’16 ‘20 have joined the Board of Trustees. Tim Dignan, the vice president and controller of T. Rowe Price Group, will contribute financial expertise, and Tom Brinker, general contractor and builder of J.F. Brinker & Sons, Inc., will be a tremendous asset as we move forward with capital construction and renovation projects. Our success is a miraculous combination of blessings, including the sacrificial service and support from our community. Those gifts are critical as we embark on a capital campaign to build the Center for Performing Arts and Student Life, expand the Chapel of St. Francis de Sales, and renovate half (B Side) of the fourth floor. The Anchored in Excellence. Charting our Future. Capital Campaign is moving forward in phases with the goal of sharing this vision with hundreds of people over 18 months. The campaign organization is in place with Honorary, Operational, and Division Chairs representing all constituencies of our Mount de Sales family. In the current pacesetter phase, Sr. Mary Thomas, the Advancement Team, and campaign volunteers are meeting with leaders in our community. The gifts of faculty and staff and the Board of Trustees have been invited; their response has been overwhelming. Additionally, several foundations have been receptive to our case for support. I am pleased to report that the progress in the pacesetter phase is quite impressive, and early indicators show the campaign will produce outstanding results. With continued receptiveness from our community to learn about the campaign and consider involvement, we will be positioned to launch the public phase of the campaign in spring 2018. In this phase, public announcements will be made, and all alumnae, parents, past parents, grandparents, friends, and businesses will be involved to support this special time in our 166-year history. The Mount de Sales community came together in the 1970s and 1980s for the survival of the school, built sound financial footing in the 1990s, and brought the school into the 21st century. Now we are inviting you to consider your part in providing the facilities our students need to round out their already amazing experience at Mount de Sales.

Sincerely,

Brian P. MacLean P’14 President, Board of Trustees

SAILO R S C APT U R E F I F T H I A A M T I T L E Mount de Sales Varsity Volleyball has captured their second IAAM A Conference Championship in three years, their fifth title overall. With a mix of talented youth and dedicated seniors, the Sailors navigated a challenging schedule and finished the season as the team to beat. Second-year Coach Tuan Nguyen and the Sailors opened with two hard-fought league wins over Notre Dame Prep (NDP) and Archbishop Spalding, then a 3-0 drubbing of local rival Catonsville High. After the NDP match, Sailors won the next three league matches and received region-wide recognition as No. 7 in the final September Baltimore Sun Volleyball Poll. With that prodigious mix of youth, led by freshmen Mary Grace Goyena and Chidinma Onukwugha, and senior leadership anchored by Captains Camille Kreisel and Hanna Katulski, the Sailors held serve and completed an undefeated 10-0 league season. In the IAAM Semifinals the Sailors tangled with defending champion NDP at home. In front of a raucous Pistorio Sports Complex crowd, the Sailors dropped the Blazers in three games to advance. Goyena had 12 kills and was 16/16 serving with four aces. Onukwugha tallied seven kills with two aces and three blocks. Kreisel was 8/10 serving with three aces and 21 assists. Junior Malina Beideman was 13/14 serving with eight digs. Sailor fans came out in droves for the IAAM Volleyball Championship game, held at Roland Park Country School. The Sailors uncharacteristically dropped the first two games and looked for a spark against the confident St. Paul’s School for Girls Gators. Goyena and Onukwugha again played beyond their years, and Katulski served eight straight points to help win the critical third game. Seniors Mary Marc and Hailey Woodward turned in spirited performances when the Sailors needed it most, not only earning the Championship, but also cementing the most important fact about 2017 Sailor Volleyball: they were a team. All season, working together was their defining characteristic. By: Adam Noto

PURPLE FRIDAY CERTAINLY ISN’T OPTIONAL IN MY FAMILY.

launch education programs like our Ravens Bookmobile, and give new equipment to local youth football teams.

While everyone else seems to be focused on the game on Sunday, “gameday” for my department actually occurs on the players’ day off. As the director of community relations for the Baltimore Ravens, it’s my responsibility to maximize the little free time our players, coaches, and staff have and use it to connect them to the community.

This job, however, certainly was not what I envisioned when I graduated from Mount de Sales in 2003. Honestly, I felt like I was the only student at graduation who had no idea what she was going to do. But, over the years, I never forgot the greatest lesson I learned at MDSA: trust God and His plan for your life.

I am truly grateful to have a job that combines my passion for philanthropy with my love of sports. While overseeing all community relations for the team, I help to develop and implement strategic outreach efforts supporting the Baltimore community– feeding the hungry, providing clothing to the homeless, finding creative ways to thank our servicemen and women, supporting education, and so much more. Additionally, I serve as the executive director of the Ravens Foundation, where I manage all fundraising initiatives executed by the team’s charitable arm. I select well-deserving high school seniors each year to receive our college scholarship,

He has always had this unbelievable plan for my career, and while I did not know where it would lead me, He did. Without my deeplyrooted faith, planted at MDSA, I don’t know if I would have heard His direction for every decision along this journey. Mount de Sales taught me so much academically, but I believe the teachings we learned about faith and living as Jesus called us to live were the most important. Those lessons can be applied to every Sailor’s life after graduation, no matter where the journey takes her. I’m glad mine has allowed me to serve others, be a positive influence in our community, and wear jeans and purple T-shirts every Friday.

GO RAVENS!

Homecoming DAY Every year, the Mount de Sales community comes together in the fall to celebrate the Homecoming festivities. Taco in a bag, Sailor sports, and tours of the newly renovated Gate House were just a few highlights this year! Alumnae and student volunteers greeted people all day as they drove under the Gate House. The schedule for the day included a full lineup of sporting events and activities on the piazza. Although a bit blustery and cloudy, the rain held off so the Color

Guard could present the flag on the field and honor our country with the National Anthem performed by the MDSA orchestra. The Advancement Team offered tours of the Gate House in the morning, and there was a steady stream of people in and out of the Sailor Shop at its new location in the historic building. This iconic event would not be possible without the efforts of the Alumnae Association, Athletics, and Student Life. Thank you to everyone who came out to support Mount de Sales!

Crab Feast A SOLD-OUT

The annual Crab Feast has become a wellknown fall tradition at Mount de Sales. Three hundred people filled the gym on Saturday, October 14, to crack crabs, share fellowship, and support the Alumnae Association Scholarships. Harris Seafood steamed fresh Maryland Blue Crabs on site, and Monaghan’s Pub served delicious dinner fare including pulled pork and seafood mac and cheese. As everyone enjoyed the all-you-can-eat cuisine, members of the Alumnae Association sold various rae tickets. The silent auction boasted a range of items, from custom Mount de Sales cornhole sets to Ravens tickets and Ocean City weekend getaway trips. Thanks to the dedicated members of the Alumnae Association and everyone who attended. This proved to be the most successful Crab Feast to date! See you there next year!

Her first win came from The Advertising Club of Richmond, who awarded her a scholarship for being an Outstanding Young Woman in Advertising. Kayleigh accepted her cannonball trophy in April 2017 and will use the money for her senior year of college. Her second award came from the Advertising Club at VCU, where she won a student award show for a video single she made for Rolling Rock. Although she prefers “Natty Boh” (as all Baltimoreans should) she is very proud that this comedic commercial was recognized for its satirical humor.
