Graduation 2022 3 Greetings from the Principal

As we have journeyed these four years together as a class, school, and community, we have relied on trust in each other, selflessness, and a steadfast focus on the goal. Audrey Powers ‘94, who visited MDSA in February, encouraged the students to worry less about forcing a plan and trust more that the doors will open if doors are supposed to open. Humble confidence. God has a plan, and His plan is always for our ultimate happiness. There is always a healthy and creative solution to make life easier and the burden lighter. As Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, a great Dominican, wrote, “The Gifts of the Holy Spirit intervene rather frequently in ordinary circumstances to give the acts of the virtues in generous souls a perfection, an impulse, and a promptness which would not exist without the superior action of the Holy Spirit.”

As we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost the day after graduation, my prayer was that all young women who come through Mount de Sales may confidently and humbly find, through the grace of God, creative ways to bring joy to every situation that life presents them, piercing through the haze of any circumstance with an indomitable faith. With God, there is always a way to bring lightness, joy, and life to any Sincerelysituation. in Christ, Sister Mary Raymond, O.P.

Preparing my Baccalaureate remarks, I had a plan. I wanted to talk to them about happiness and its true meaning: happiness is not found in wealth, honors, or power, but ultimately in God. True to form, I had the speech almost completed when, a few days before Baccalaureate, the words humble confidence kept coming to mind. Humble confidence. Part of our yearlong strategic plan process included describing a Mount de Sales alumna. Humble confidence came unexpectedly but not as a surprise because it summed up perfectly in two simple words a Mount de Sales Academy graduate.

NOTEWORTHY SENIOR STATS

One of the best gifts we can give a student at a Catholic school is the opportunity to think critically to discover truth. Truth really exists, and our young people can come to know it.

Theworks!”order and intelligibility of the universe are hard to miss in a science class. If our girls can have confidence in their intellect to know truth about the material world, then why should they not have confidence in knowing virtue and love and the purpose of their existence? The world of science is just

My father is a chemical engineer, and my mother is a physician, so talking about science was normal at the dinner table. My dad explained the chemistry and physics of cooking as he made dinner, and my mom talked about the latest medical news. I loved math, especially how equations elegantly explained the structure of the universe. In seventh grade, I read about Caltech and decided I wanted to go there to study astrophysics. That dream came true! What does STEM mean to the education process and culture of a school for students and educators?

What is your educational background?

I have a bachelor’s in science in astrophysics from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). I also have a master’s degree in education from Aquinas College. What sparked your interest in science?

For example, in one physics lab, the girls had to create a marble roller coaster ramp and predict, using equations of motion, the exact spot the marble would land. They were astonished when it hit very close, usually within one centimeter, of their prediction. One senior often exclaimed, “Physics

The more a class is student-centered, the more they learn. I once heard that the ideal length of a lecture should be no longer than the age of the student. For 15-year-olds, keep the lecture to 15 minutes. It’s difficult in practice, and I rarely succeed. But to learn science, students need time to practice skills, investigate, observe, hypothesize, solve multistep problems, and interact with each other. It is time well-spent to ask an open-ended question and allow them to grapple with it, even if providing a formula would be more efficient.

We ought never frustrate their natural desire to reason by giving them the answer too quickly. Rather, the teacher invites the student to wonder about an aspect of reality and provides support for the learner to arrive at a new understanding. Learning happens at the pace of the student. What do you believe is the most rewarding part of teaching?

the beginning—the touchable, visible portal—of the truth, goodness, and beauty of the cosmos. When STEM puts students in contact with this reality, then it has done its noble service. What is your teaching philosophy?

Watching the girls learn and make discoveries! You can’t help but feel proud of them for how far they come. Teachers feel honored to be part of that growth.

Nashville PILGRIMAGE

My trip to Nashville was a journey of growing in my faith, experiencing the joy and beauty of the Dominican Sisters, and many fun times. I was blessed to go on this trip. The generosity of many benefactors made it possible for me and my sister to go.

I remember feeling exuberant and joyful when we arrived at the Motherhouse. I encountered the Lord in ways I never imagined and learned many things about myself. I learned the way the Lord speaks to me. I always expected God to speak in a booming voice with His message clear as day. Because of this misconception, I couldn’t see the little ways God works in my life, making me ungrateful. Being with the Sisters showed me that Jesus likes to do small things for me throughout the day, making it more personal. This trip was also filled with fun times such as singing country songs at the Ryman Auditorium and Sister Albertine showing us who’s the boss at Ultimate Frisbee. However, the best and most important moments were when I spent time with the Lord, getting to know Him more deeply, and experiencing His love through the words and the love of the Dominican Sisters. As a teacher and alumna, what have you found are the qualities of a Sailor?

• Perfectionism is overrated. Do your best and surrender the rest.

• Never settle for less than you deserve – and you deserve the world!

• When it comes to making big decisions, follow the peace. So many students admire you. How do you make those connections?

What do you love about teaching at Mount de Sales Academy?

Teacher of the Year

Teaching in these grace-filled halls has been a dream come true!

I love teaching with such gifted coworkers in an environment where faith is front and center. I especially love teaching the girls.

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share? This year my class created “Wisdom Wednesdays.” The girls wrote down questions they had about high school, college, relationships, careers, “adulting,” etc, and we picked one each class. We had so many great conversations! Some wisdom I hope my students received this year:

I’m actually really shy! I’m about as introverted as they come and definitely run on the quieter side. I used to view that aspect of my personality as a weakness, but in reality, it allows me to be sensitive to how others are feeling and helps me cultivate deeper relationships. My students also bring me a great deal of joy and energy!

I’m humbled by this question! I love math, and I love my students – the rest really flows from that. I try to make my classroom a safe space. I want students to feel free to make mistakes and know that sometimes the most meaningful learning happens that way. Often as the year goes on, students begin to open up more about different challenges and trials. I listen, seek to understand, and offer bits of advice as we go. I share my honest life experiences and lessons I’ve learned, help them think through respectful ways to communicate with others, and remind them whether math-related or not, I’m here for them. Students will always learn better when they feel known and cared for. What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

Every Sailor is unique with her own talents and strengths, but as Sister Mary Raymond said, by the time they leave our halls they have humble confidence. They have a sense of knowing themselves, their worth, their dignity without diminishing the strength and dignity of others.

Mount de Sales’ high personal and academic standards and deep faith culture draws in beautiful souls I am privileged to teach. Being an all-girls school gives our Sailors confidence that they can pursue anything they set their mind to and allows them the freedom to be more fully themselves.

• It’s okay to set and hold healthy boundaries.

Spring Dance PERFORMANCE

On April 7, 2022, the Mount de Sales Academy Spring Dance Performance took place for the first time on stage in the Center for Performing Arts and Student Life. The Honors Dance Company performed a wide range of both classical and contemporary dances, choreographed by Mrs. Romeo and the dancers. The Dance Club shared a couple of fun pieces they learned during club meetings, and three amazing champion-level Irish dancers joined the performance as guest artists. We said goodbye to company members Sara Moran ’22 and Emme Mowrey ’22, who each performed a beautiful, self-choreographed senior solo. It was a lovely evening of dance enjoyed by family and friends. FALLING IN LOVE with Philosophy

Jane Cochran '22

Graduation 2022 9

I grew up among my parents’ absurdly large collection of great books. By the time I heard the names Socrates, Plato, or Aristotle in an academic setting, I had already become accustomed to seeing them on the spines of the books lining the walls of our home and hearing them alluded to in my parents’ discussions. My very first philosophy class in sophomore year was the fulfillment of this elementary knowledge. Our Philosophy of the Human Person class taught me to ask questions more fundamental than I ever had before and to take arguments to their root to find the truth; it taught me to love God and others well. In junior year, Ethics taught me the art of understanding gray areas, accepting the troubles of the world while continuing the fight for justice, and respecting the boundaries of morality. Finally, Philosophy Seminar this year showed me that even the greatest of philosophers are people too, people whose temperaments and experiences influenced every aspect of their Throughthought.each of these unique learning experiences, Mount de Sales not only honed my love of knowledge, but also taught me the crucial importance of it. The philosophy program prompted the invaluable realization that I could make a career in philosophy, the subject that makes me feel most fulfilled. Furthermore, I grew to understand the value of the religious perspective on philosophy I received and kept this in mind during my college search. I am now enrolled at Catholic University as a philosophy major and am overjoyed to build on the excellent classical education I received at Mount de Sales.

One of the great joys and privileges of serving on the Mount de Sales Academy Board of Trustees has been working closely with Brian MacLean P’14.

Tom Campbell P ’14 + Vice President, MDSA Board of Trustees 2014-2022 + It is with profound sadness we share that Tom Campbell passed away on Saturday, July 30. Farewell, Brian MacLean!

Brian guided the board and the school through a period of unprecedented change. By overseeing the strategic plan execution, Brian led Mount de Sales through a series of projects that enhanced our ability to grow and respond to an evolving school environment. These included major renovations to the historic Gate House, reopening the fourth floor “B” side of the 1852 Building, expansion of the chapel, and completion of the construction of the Center for Performing Arts and Student Life. Throughout Brian’s term, he oversaw the continued growth in information technology infrastructure and the implementation of one-to-one tablets for all students. This undertaking positioned MDSA to smoothly transition into remote and hybrid-learning environments during the pandemic. These successes were achieved while still maintaining the fiscal stability necessary for the future of the school. As Brian and the board brought the last strategic plan to completion with the Center for Performing Arts and Student Life, he now launches us forward with an exciting new plan and strong alumnae leadership. During Brian’s tenure as president, the Board of Trustees has increased alumnae members to over one third of the total membership. Most recently Brian’s leadership has helped guide the development of a new strategic plan that incorporates input from all segments of the MDSA community. We say farewell to Brian with grateful hearts! Thank you, Brian, for your exemplary leadership, dedication, and service to Mount de Sales Academy!

SARAH MIMA, Salutatorian

As we come today to celebrate our last time together as a class at Mount de Sales, it is the culmination of these many memorable moments that solidifies our sisterhood and propels us to a greater mission beyond ourselves. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once stated, “Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope.” Despite the unfortunate situation we experienced, we were invigorated with greater hope and excitement for the time we had together as we returned. In every aspect of our lives, we can take the unfortunate and transform it into a fulfilling endeavor. As we reflect upon our past four years here, I am truly confident that each and every one of us has the power to transform the world through trust in our abilities, the continual support from those around us, and the grateful reception of the blessings of God in leading us to greater pursuits.

Graduation 2022 17

As the old saying goes, “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.” So, look out for one another and help others when they’re struggling. Remember the idea that, “I am my brother’s keeper.” We are all responsible for the well-being of our brothers and sisters, and we can better ourselves by working to improve the lives of others. It is also essential to build strong relationships. Especially after a long time in isolation, being surrounded by loved ones is something we should never take for granted. So, engage in the present, and engage with the people you meet. As you strive to reach your personal goals, tend to the needs of others, and don’t neglect those around you.

MIRIANA KELLY, Valedictorian

Ultimately, we can achieve excellence through exercising compassion. In the midst of life’s inevitable sufferings, it is extremely important that we support and encourage one another.

KYLIE TITTINGER, Mount de Sales Girl

These qualities of beauty, truth, and goodness form each Mount de Sales girl with a servant’s heart and a love for our neighbor. Sister Mary Madeline, inspired by Saint John of the Cross, reminded us that there will be only one question on the “final exam,” and it will be simply about how much we loved. Hebrews 6:10 says, “For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love you have demonstrated for His name by having served and continuing to serve the holy ones.” Mount de Sales forms young women into steadfast disciples of Christ. I have seen time again how each of us is a true Mount de Sales girl. I have observed that we all charitably serve and willingly love one another, whether it be in the small moments of the day or in grander gestures. It is in Saint Therese of Lisieux’s little way that we seek to be true daughters of God.

There are many timeless traditions at Mount de Sales Academy’s graduation. Whether it is wearing the white dress or carrying red roses while walking through the windows, every graduate remembers her experience. This day is special as a graduate and to witness as an Thisalumna.year,we invited multiple classes to return to Mount de Sales to celebrate their 50th reunions after having to postpone them during the pandemic. For Sailors in the classes of 1970 and 1972, many of the memories surrounding their own graduation day came to mind while they celebrated their 50th reunion as a part of the 170th commencement. The women gathered for a breakfast reception in the Bird Room and enjoyed their time together before joining the families and graduates in the Music Hall.

Paul Whittaker, father of Juliette ’22 (pictured right), competed several years ago with his team from Georgetown University in the Championship of America distance medley relay at the Penn Relays. His team won the event, each runner receiving the prize of a distinctive gold watch. This past spring, in her senior year, Juliette competed in the high school girls’ Championship Mile at the Penn Relays. She won her event, leading from start to finish. For her efforts she received the same gold watch. Like father like daughter as evidenced in the accompanying photograph. This may be a piece of history as the first father/daughter pair to accomplish this.

To run against Juliette Whittaker is also to run with her. Other runners acknowledge that Juliette is not only a fierce competitor, but also that it is an uplifting experience. She brings out the best performance in everyone else, too. Recently in winning the Brooks PR Invitational Championship Mile in 4:36, she brought six other girls with her, all of whom broke 4:40, a combined result never before achieved in high school girls’ track history.

PC: Pete Townsend Paul Whittaker and Juliette

Juliette and sister Bella ’20, known as the “Whittasistas” on social media and with a large following, have been quietly visiting local elementary schools to speak particularly to the girls there. It is not simply about track, but about what it means to set goals, to follow dreams, and to be prepared for the work it actually takes to achieve those goals. Juliette has always set goals. That is the first thing she does each season. She never shies away from the work needed to achieve those goals. Such wisdom and dedication now inspires many young hearts.

PC: Brady Scott PC: John Nepolitan

During her senior year, track commentators have turned to Juliette and her connection to history. She now holds the national record for 1000 meters indoors, the first high school girl in history to run that distance in under 2:40. She recently ran 1:59.04 for the 800 meters, establishing a new national record. That race qualified her to represent the U.S. in Kali, Colombia, in early August at the U20 World Track Championship where she won the bronze medal. She is part of two relay teams which have established U20 (under the age of 20) world records. Most recently she was recognized by Gatorade as the National Player of the Year in Track, a tribute to her athletically and academically and based upon her outstanding character as well. She heads to Stanford this fall. One feels she will add to their storied track history.

It was truly inspiring to witness each member of our school community have their why restored this year. The hallways and classrooms were again filled with Sailor spirit and sisterhood. Our students regained structure and returned to mastering the staples of a Mount de Sales education: writing well, thinking deeply, speaking clearly, and studying effectively. The reasons behind their why of choosing Mount de Sales were restored as normalcy returned. Whether it was trying a new club, becoming a leader on a team or being part of the inaugural group of students to grace our new auditorium’s stage, each student was given the opportunity to live her why to the fullest capacity. Our teachers were energized being back in the classroom and were reminded of their purpose. Their why for teaching at Mount de Sales is to see, love, and connect with their students. What a blessing it was to witness these interactions take center stage on a daily basis this year.

The 170-year-old legacy of academic excellence grounded in faith at Mount de Sales will continue this fall as our newest Sailors walk the halls for the first time. Their why for choosing Mount de Sales will come to life as they immerse themselves in the culture of the school and take part in the school’s treasured traditions.
