Greetings FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Friends of Mount de Sales,
It was with joy that we celebrated our graduates of the Class of 2023, confident in their capacity to give an account of the hope that is within their hearts (1 Peter 3:15). As I watched the graduates embrace their parents, friends, teachers, and the Sisters, I considered our Mount de Sales family built on the traditions of the Catholic Faith and the liberal arts. These young women—as you’ll see in the pages that follow—have excelled academically, spiritually, and humanly; each one can execute the Scientific Method with critical reasoning, leading, or joining others in prayer, and most notably, of seeing, loving, and serving all that is true, good, and beautiful.
In the nation’s colleges and universities, students ask themselves, “Who am I?”; “What is the purpose of my life?”; “What am I supposed to do?” I see our girls grounded in their unique identities by the time they have completed their years at Mount de Sales. Established in their relationship with Our Lord, they live, love, and serve in their families, amongst their friends, their classmates, and the larger community. They know they are loved, what they value and who they ARE. How did all of this happen between their freshman and senior years? Through the gift of an education, our students find themselves in giving themselves, taking the risks of new relationships, new challenges, and new ideas. And the best of these new ideas are old ideas, the revered ideas upon which our historical, cultural, and religious heritage are built.
All these reflections made me realize how important it is for us to remain faithful to our Catholic mission as we move forward. I love to see the girls thriving through the opportunities afforded by our new Center for Performing Arts and Student Life. Moreover, thanks to our committed faculty and staff, we are upholding our high academic standards as we progress with our strategic plan. We have officially received our AIMS accreditation, and we continue to build our STEM program, adding a Robotics Team and a course in AP Computer Science. Thank you for supporting us and helping us toward making the most important things happen: our girls know who they are, they are ready to take their place in our world, and they know they are loved
Sincerely in Christ,
Sister Mary Raymond, O.P.

Re-envisioned Mission Statement
It is exciting to realize that what you set out to accomplish, you are indeed accomplishing by God’s grace! As the community of Mount de Sales has been preparing its AIMS Accreditation Self-Study, we have enjoyed the Spirit-led opportunity to revisit and renew our mission statement.
As we surveyed the diverse populations that make up our community, we realized with joy and thanks that the key elements of our timeless mission statement are in fact being lived. With notable unanimity, we agreed that the faith-based foundation of academic excellence and service that makes Mount de Sales Academy such a unique place is fully alive and embodied in our students.
We also recognized that slight revisions could help our mission statement reflect the rich reality of Mount de Sales Academy even more fully. For this reason, the new mission statement begins with an explicit statement of being centered on Jesus Christ. This reflects both the literal reality of our physical building and the spiritual reality of all that we are and do.
Based on a survey, our constituents likewise thought it important to highlight not only our rich Visitation tradition, but also the unique gift of the Dominican charism that now, for over three decades, has enriched the entire community.
The listing of the many forms of excellence we seek to cultivate in our students, slightly reworded to focus on virtuous integrity and compassionate service, unites our timeless vision with a renewed commitment to the dignity of every person rooted in love and truth.
Sister Mary Madeline, O.P. AIMS Core Mission and Values Committee Member Philosophy Department Chair

Encountering Christ through Service WITH JESSICA NAHMIAS, SERVICE COORDINATOR
Can you share how the service program is unique at MDSA?
The service program at MDSA is unique because it focuses on encountering Christ in each person served. We encourage students to engage with the poor or with those in need directly through the corporal works of mercy. The service program challenges students to use their gifts, talents, and passions to give joyfully and put their faith into action.
What are your goals for this program?
My goals for the service program are for students to develop relationships with those whom they are serving by consistently volunteering with a program that they are passionate about. I hope students not only serve the poor but also know the poor. Building relationships takes showing up—again and again. My ongoing goal is for each student to open their hearts to encounter the Lord in the person they are serving. My bigger, long-term goals are to establish yearly domestic and international mission trips over spring break and summer break.
How has your work as service coordinator impacted your own faith?
I went on my first mission trip when I was a high school student. That weeklong mission trip sparked something within me: to keep going back, to keep giving my time, to keep serving others. That spark from one week in high school was the first light that slowly affected the rest of my life in high school and college, ultimately leading me
to be a missionary for a year in Ecuador. Accompanying my neighbors in Ecuador through suffering, poverty, and injustice, I encountered the vastness of God’s presence, love, and mercy. As the MDSA service coordinator, I have witnessed the way that God meets students beyond the chapel and beyond the school building. I have been able to see and hear students’ hearts be moved, just like mine was back in high school, and reminded that our call to serve the poor is a lifelong mission.
How have you witnessed the Holy Spirit working in the lives of the MDSA students?
I have witnessed the Holy Spirit moving students through their passions and the realization that service can be fun! When students realize that it is more than a requirement for graduation, they allow themselves to connect their passions, interests, and hearts to their service, and they look forward to serving again.
What are your interests and hobbies?
Beyond the walls of MDSA, you can almost always find me outside rock climbing or hiking. I absolutely love dancing Lindy Hop and Balboa, too! Through all my interests, I enjoy bringing friends together to be present to Christ’s joy and beauty around us in both the extraordinary and ordinary.

Growing in Confidence A DISCUSSION WITH IZZY PENEFIEL ’23
The beautiful part about the Sisters’ faith is that they are present in it and remain active partakers in stewardship regardless of environment. That is something admirable I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
Can you speak to the all-girls’ environment at Mount de Sales Academy?
Mount de Sales’ environment cultivated a foundational understanding between myself and my peers. Navigating holiness and femininity together was a multifaceted experience we all underwent, growing from scared teens to inquisitive, confident women with a powerful drive to change the world for the better.
What was your favorite class?
My favorite class was AP Biology, where we dissected the science of the natural world itself. I want to become a veterinarian/biology researcher in the future, and the interactive classes, group projects, and meticulous lab work really pushed me to new limits.
What were some of your favorite traditions and extracurriculars?
Here, the community in the arts is so strong, and performing in the seasonal concerts is one of my most precious memories. Prior to MDSA, I was a timid performer, and while I am still anxious from time to time, the memories I have of my orchestra family and the countless performances we did together never fail to warm my heart and lift my spirits.
What is the most important thing you have learned from the Dominican Sisters?
The most important thing I have learned is that holiness is not just something studied but something lived truthfully.
How have you grown during your time at Mount de Sales?
I have grown into a confident young woman by engaging not only in rigorous course studies, but also by integrating them in faith. At first, it was quite awkward because I was Catholic and had never had any Catholic schooling or religion classes. However, I learned at MDSA that faith was a necessary component of my learning. It is my critical focal point, the purpose of why and how I conducted myself and my goals. I came to understand that I am part of something bigger, making me more determined to push myself to the limits and contribute to the world whenever I could.
The patron saint of Mount de Sales, St. Francis de Sales, encouraged us to “Be who we are, and be that perfectly well.” Can you illustrate how MDSA has fostered this belief in your life?
At MDSA, I learned to take advantage of the resources provided to me, building a curriculum that best supported my talents and challenged my weaknesses. In doing so, I became stronger, more confident, and able to embrace what I love—music, art, and science—and give it forward to my community in concerts, projects, and research.
6 | Graduation 2023
Strength of an All-Girls School
I cannot imagine a better educational experience for a young woman than the all-girls environment. Nothing else builds her confidence than the freedom to express herself in an accepting setting. Teachers attest that this confidence blossoms from freshman to senior year.
At the beginning, most girls are timid in offering an answer in class in front of peers. As each Mount de Sales girl experiences that she is accepted and valued for her contributions, she becomes less afraid to volunteer an answer—and realizes that her questions are an important and valuable part of the learning environment. By senior year, she is confident and unafraid with her peers and teachers.
When she goes to college, she will be legitimately confused when she observes the other girls not raising their hands, especially in STEM classes. Then she will realize the gift she received. She was surrounded for four years by a community of encouraging young women, a bond that will last her entire life, and confidence that will not be taken away.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND
“You Must Have a Cup of Tea.”
The Mount de Sales Performing Arts Department presented the first full-length play in recent history to audiences both young and old. The cast and crew brought to life the colorful, eccentric, and exciting world of Wonderland through the eyes of a little girl named Alice.
Hailey Clark illustrated the innocence and curiosity of Alice as she traveled through Wonderland meeting exciting and classic characters. Amongst those characters were the pugnacious Caterpillar played exquisitely by June Newell, the truculent Duchess played brilliantly by Autumn Martin, the defiant Humpty Dumpty played beautifully by Kennedy Gould and, of course, the crazy Mad Hatter (Nat Johnson), March Hare (Katie Tis) and Door Mouse (Raegan Moses). These animated characters were only part of Act One.
The clever and artful Cheshire Cat (Megan McCaffrey) joined Alice through her quest to get home in time for her birthday party encountering other fantastical characters like Tweedle Dee (Amanda Warren), Tweedle Dum (Anna Kaiser), the White Rabbit (Bella Hadley) the Mock Turtle (Kensington Carter), the Gryphon (Sarah Shumaker) and of course, the villainous, duplicitous, and lively Queen of Hearts professionally portrayed by Sydney McGee as she stomped onto the scene with purpose and authority. Though Alice always “wondered which way to go” and met with characters who were “all mad here,” she was able to overcome the chaotic world of Wonderland and find her way back home.
The production was a success with the help of all the parent volunteers, the support of the MDSA faculty and staff, as well as the extremely talented crew and tech. Stage managers, Colleen Butler and Josie Hill, once again brought their creativity and leadership to the “madness” of Alice in Wonderland
The Mount de Sales Performing Arts Program provides an educational theatre environment where all students are invited to explore their creativity both on and off the stage. Participating in the fall musical and spring play allows the students to collaborate with their fellow theatre peers to create magic for the MDSA community. As the Duchess says, “everything’s got a moral, if only you can find it;” the moral of MDSA theatre is every student has the opportunity to shine like the stars that they are when they enter the Performing Arts Program.

FAREWELL TO COACH WEBER
As this school year drew to a close, so did Steve Weber’s (Webs) 56th and final season as a coach at Mount de Sales Academy. During his 21 years of coaching, he led the cross country, indoor track, and the outdoor track teams to several championship titles. These championship titles were accompanied by many record-setting seasons along with more than 40 girls being named IAAM all-conference athletes. Webs was named The Baltimore Sun’s All Metro Coach of the Year in 2018 and the IAAM’s Coach of the Year in 2023— two welldeserved recognitions since many of his athletes have gone on to have successful collegiate running careers, professional running careers, and have even participated in the US Olympic Time Trials.
The success and reputation of Mount de Sales running is no doubt a result of Webs’ dedication to us and to the program. He put so much of his heart, energy, and enthusiasm into these teams. He was always there to gently push us out of our comfort zones, encourage us on those tough race days, and share a bit of his philosophical wisdom along the way. I asked a lot of my former teammates what their biggest takeaways were from running with Webs. Shannon Blee ’16 summed up our feelings with this beautiful statement:
“Webs did not just coach us to be the best runners. He inspired us to be strong young women and fostered within us a love for the sport. It has been 11 years since I picked up my first pair of running shoes, and I haven’t been able to put them down.”
At the start of each cross-country season, Webs picked a bible verse or a phrase that would serve as the year’s theme. One year, he chose 1 Corinthians 9:24—”Run so as to win.”
I think that verse encapsulates Webs’ time at Mount de Sales. He coached us in a way that ensured we could win. Not necessarily through emphasizing the importance of IAAM championship titles or personal records, but instead, he empowered us to be strong women and gifted us with a lifelong love for running. And so, when we occasionally run into our former teammates on the trails in Patapsco, or see them breaking college records, or read notes left by one another in the old notebook at the Angel Garden, there is a shared sense of community, of healthy competition, and of home—and that feels like winning to me.
Christina McCaul ’16 Former cross country/track athlete and assistant cross country coach

COACH OF THE YEAR
It was a monumental year for Coach Weber as he was once again named the 2023 IAAM Track and Field Coach of the Year. MDSA Athletic Director Eric Dummann shares, “Steve is a wonderful role model for our girls and a source of aid or support that may be drawn upon when needed. He is always glad to share or receive knowledge from other coaches. I am grateful that I was able to work with him every day and truly appreciate how he has coached another remarkable season.”

Uniquely Mount de Sales
Joanne and Patrick Cusick have five beautiful daughters who each had shared yet unique experiences at Mount de Sales. Read their insights below.
EMMA
CUSICK KINGETT ’13
My time at MDSA gave me gifts that I have shared with my younger sisters. I developed the foundation of my faith, learned about the importance of friendship and family; and discovered the significance of helping others, which I pursued in my current career as a nurse practitioner. After ten years, I look back at MDSA with gratitude for everything the sisters, teachers, and staff taught me.
COLLEEN CUSICK ’17
Inspired by the classes and teachers at MDSA, I pursued a bachelor’s degree in English at UMBC. MDSA helped me build confidence within myself and succeed in my current endeavor as the office manager for a tutoring company in Honolulu, Hawaii. I am happy that my sisters and I had the opportunity to gain experience in a faith-based environment.
MAURA CUSICK ’20
Before MDSA, I never considered a career in a STEM field, but the experience I had with amazing and supportive teachers led me to pursue an applied statistics major at UMBC. I am so grateful to have been able to spend my high school years at a place so important to my family and to my faith.
14 | Graduation 2023
ERIN CUSICK ’21
Growing up in a predominantly female household, I learned I thrive best in a female-influenced community. Attending MDSA was an experience that strengthened my confidence and shaped me to feel assured in my femininity. I am currently continuing my journey at UMBC with an unwavering passion for my faith thanks to MDSA!
MAGGIE CUSICK ’23
I felt MDSA’s impact as the values translated from my sisters to me. My sisters taught me how to love in a nurturing and selfless way, further encouraged by both my mother and MDSA. The school emphasized my parents’ values and fulfilled their expectations of our education and now, I will be fulfilling my dreams of becoming a professional ballet dancer.
JOANNE CUSICK
After all the love, time, and energy invested in homeschooling our children for their primary education, we wanted our daughters to go to a traditional girls’ high school, building on the foundation of virtue that we had begun. There was only one school that we thought could be a true collaborator in this pursuit, and it was MDSA. We have respect and admiration for the Dominican Sisters, confident about putting our daughters into their care. Over the years, God helped us to find the resources to make the financial sacrifice, and it was well worth it. Our daughters have a great relationship with both family and Jesus Christ, manifested by their continued practice of the Catholic faith. They have excelled academically and professionally, serving as an example for their friends and co-workers. We give credit to the grace of God and the selfless example of the sisters and faculty of MDSA as partners with us in this formative journey.

TOP DISTINCTIONS
“As we walk through the windows today, Mount de Sales’ lighthouse may fade out of our view, but the guiding light within us – built painstakingly over the past four years – will continue to shine.”
“So, my piece of advice to each of you would be to open yourselves up to all the love the Father wants to shower you with. Allow yourself to be loved and you will change the world.”
“I believe that there is one reason why I love this school so much: our history, our academics, our traditions, and our relationships are founded on Christ.”

KATHLEEN GILLIAM VALEDICTORIAN
SYDNEY MCGEE SALUTATORIAN
ANNA DANG MOUNT DE SALES GIRL
TEACHER OF THE YEAR: Stephanie Luzier P’15
What do you love about teaching at Mount de Sales Academy?
I love the students, my colleagues, that the chapel is physically and spiritually at the heart of Mount de Sales, and that the students all study philosophy!
What makes it unique?
Mount de Sales Academy was established in 1852 before the Bunsen burner was invented in 1855, before Father Mendel’s experiments in 1865, before Mendeleev’s periodic table in 1869, before J.J. Thomson discovered the electron in 1897, before Father Lemaitre put forth the Big Bang Theory in 1927, before Chadwick discovered the neutron in 1932, and before the structure of DNA was determined in 1953! As a science teacher, I think that is amazing!
As a teacher and past parent, what have you found are the qualities of a Sailor?
To be a Sailor is to be rooted in the infinite love of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. It is only the infinite love, holiness, and grace of God that we can credit Him on our journey.
If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?
When someone asks you to pray for them, then really pray for them. Sincerely take the time to talk to God and intercede for that person and his or her intention.
What would the students be surprised to find out about you?
Saturday is my favorite day to pray the Rosary and reflect on the five events in the life of Our Lord that I call the Precious Mysteries. I reflect on The Incarnation (John 1:14) for wonder and awe, Jesus Teaches Us How to Pray (Matthew 6:9-15) for goodness, Jesus’ Feet are Anointed (John 12:28) for reverence, Jesus’ Side is Pierced (John 19:32-37) for mercy, and Jesus is Buried (John 19:38-42) for faithfulness.
So many students admire you. How do you make those connections?
I once read a poem called “The Teacher” by L. P. Hill.
Lord, who am I to teach the way
To these young ones day by day, So prone myself to go astray?
I teach them knowledge, but I know How faint they flicker and how low
The candles of my knowledge glow. I teach them power to will and do, But only now to learn anew
My own great weakness through and through.
I teach them love for all mankind
And all God’s creatures, but I find My love comes lagging far behind.
Lord, if their guide I still must be, Oh, let these precious young ones see Their teacher leaning hard on Thee.
I think the answer to making connections is found in humility, in respecting those entrusted to my care, and in staying rooted in the love that Christ has for each one of us.

Community and Collaboration make DAY OF GIVING a Success!
On June 7, our 4th Annual Day of Giving was our most successful, exceeding $110,00 contributed to the Cupola Fund! These unrestricted funds provide MDSA with ultimate flexibility to provide for the most pressing needs of our students and our school. During the 2023 Day of Giving we:
• Joined together for a rosary offered for the many submitted special intentions from our community
• Celebrated meeting our set goal of 100 donors by 11 a.m. with cookies for the girls
• Collaborated with The Parents’ Club for a $5,000 donation upon achieving the milestone of 50 parent gifts
• Magnified the giving of our community with a Board of Trustees $25,000 matching gift
We are grateful to nearly 300 people who jumped on board in support of our Day of Giving! Your giving throughout the year makes our mission possible. Thank you!
Leave a Legacy through a Planned Gift
A planned gift allows an individual to make a contribution that provides significant tax benefits and enhances financial security. The same planned gift can also make a lasting contribution to the endowment of Mount de Sales Academy. A typical vehicle for making a planned gift would be a will, trust, or life insurance policy. Above all, planned giving preserves a donor’s legacy.
For more information on Planned Giving, please contact Director of Advancement Beth Saverino ’87 at esaverino@mountdesales.org or 410.744.8498 ext. 139.

50 YEAR REUNION FOR THE CLASS OF 1973
Many timeless traditions abound at Mount de Sales Academy’s graduation. Wearing white dresses and carrying red roses while walking through the iconic Music Hall windows is something every Sailor remembers. This tradition is so special to experience as a graduate and to witness as an alumna.
Legacy in the Class of 2023
Bottom Row: Isabel Grochmal, Ava Gunther, Grace Emadi, Katie Pfeiler, Mia Benedetto, Becky Crumbacker

This year, we honored the Class of 1973 at graduation as they celebrated their 50th reunion. The women gathered for a breakfast reception and enjoyed their time together before joining the families and graduates in the Music Hall. Many stories were told about their days here at Mount de Sales, and this photo from their senior year was passed around.

ALUMNAE SPOTLIGHT: Katie Renehan ’05
“We found a tumor.” In December 2019, I was told those four words that would forever change my life. My daughter, Abby, was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer days after her fourth birthday. Our world was completely turned upside down as we began navigating hospital life and being away from home for extended periods of time. Abby underwent a craniotomy, six months of chemotherapy, three stem cell transfers, 28 days of proton radiation with anesthesia, and nine months of oral chemotherapy. To date, 8% of her tumor remains and is monitored often with scans and bloodwork. We had to rely on family, friends, community, and our faith to get us through the past few years.
While in the hospital, I noticed a need not only for transportation of a sick child, but also for the multiple items needed for long, inpatient visits. I spent many stays lugging in bags and making multiple trips with a sick child to and from the car. This prompted me to purchase a cheap wagon from Walmart, which changed everything and sparked an idea.
In the spring of 2022 with Abby improving and excelling with her physical therapy, we decided to give back to help make a change for children in the hospital. Abby’s Carts of Courage, through nonprofit Respite Retreats, delivers Radio Flyer wagons filled with comfort items to help children maneuver their cancer journey. This allows them to be refreshed and renewed to fight. Abby hand picks comfort items for each Carts of Courage Kid and delivers them in person. Since May of 2022, we have delivered 37 wagons to childhood cancer warriors nationwide.
As a Sailor of ’05, I learned to give back and pay it forward through the Social Justice Committee and the Lives of the Saints elective class senior year. The Lives of the Saints class was truly my favorite and taught me to be there for others, especially those going through hard times. I still have my binder to this day, 18 years later, and can remember many of the saint quotes I learned in class. Mount de Sales helped shape me to be strong as my daughter went through the unimaginable, to lean on our faith, and to be there for others. I am truly grateful to be a Sailor and for the lifelong lessons I learned while attending Mount de Sales. For more information on Abby’s Carts of Courage, please visit www.respiteretreats.org/acoc.

ALUMNAE MEMORIAL MASS
The Alumnae Memorial Mass is a November tradition at Mount de Sales. Starting with the Feast of All Saints and All Souls, the Church recognizes the month of November as a time to pray for the deceased.
Each year, the alumnae community remembers those women who have entered eternal life with a special Mass in the Chapel of St. Francis de Sales that all are welcome to attend. Please notify Director of Alumnae Relations Katie Ferrante ’10 at kferrante@mountdesales.org of alumnae who have passed into eternal life so they may be remembered at the Alumnae Memorial Mass this year.
Alumnae, please consider coming back to volunteer! The Alumnae Association welcomes alumnae from every generation to be a part of the mission of Mount de Sales. We meet on the third Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. in Alumnae Hall. We also need alumnae to help keep their classmates connected to the school and informed on events and reunions!
There are many opportunities to come back to campus and lend a helping hand this fall. Volunteers are needed for our annual Crab Feast on October 14. Please email Director of Alumnae Relations Katie Audy Ferrante ’10 for more information at kferrante@mountdesales.org.
