Greetings
from the Principal Dear Friends of Mount de Sales Academy, It is a great time to be a part of Mount de Sales Academy! Our long-awaited Center for Performing Arts and Student Life (CPASL) has provided many memorable opportunities for our young women. Our students have already accomplished so much in this new building. We started the year with a performance of the life of St. Catherine Laboure, the day before the freshmen received their Miraculous Medals. This sacred performance by a professional actress from Philadelphia gave us a glimpse of what would be ahead: artists who aspire to take the stage in song, dance, and performance. We then gathered to watch Astronaut Audrey Powers ’94 launch into space on October 13. Again, the auditorium was perfect to view the accomplishment of one of our alumnae. Soon followed the sold-out shows for The Wizard of Oz. Enthusiasm, spirit, and a sense of accomplishment reigned during each performance. We highlighted all the arts soon after during the benefactor Sailor Soiree: song, dance, orchestra, and acting. In the CPASL lower lobby, there is a large window. The 1852 Building is framed by the window, including the columns, cupola, and entire profile. This new building does not stand alone, and none of us do. It exists only in connection with the long history of MDSA. We are grateful for the community of Mount de Sales, recognizing the past generosity of many who have made this building possible. We continue to ask for your prayers and financial support for this vital work. Archbishop Lori blessed our new building on December 3, and echoed the benefit of the CPASL for our students. Our hope is that each Mount de Sales student will be on stage and experience courage and growth, and that both she and the audience always find in the arts all that is good, true, and beautiful. May she find herself a participant in the work of the Creator Himself. May we help each young woman find her voice at MDSA so that she can confidently go forth into the world knowing who she is and what she can be through her talents and faith. Sincerely in Christ,
Sister Mary Raymond, O.P.

A Place Where Every Student Shines As the new home of the music, dance, and performing art classes, the state-ofthe-art Center for Performing Arts and Student Life has already provided many memorable opportunities for our young women to learn and perform. Principal Sister Mary Raymond shares, “This building has been a dream of Mount de Sales Academy for many years! What better time for our students to be able to find their voice and grow into strong and confident women ready to take their place in this world.”

Archbishop Lori Blesses the Center for Performing Arts and Student Life
On December 3, the Most Reverend Archbishop William E. Lori blessed the Center for Performing Arts and Student Life (CPASL). Additionally, he held a discussion with student council members, toured the CPASL, and celebrated Mass with our school community Archbishop Lori shares, “After much work and prayer by so many members of our school community, we gather now to bless and dedicate this new Center for Performing Arts and Student Life. It will be a center for our school activities and a place where we may come to know one another and give witness to our faith in Christ.” After the blessing, the Mount de Sales Academy Concert Choir, under the leadership of Music Director Jeff Hosier, performed a beautiful rendition of Veni, Veni Emmanuel.

Saint Catherine Laboure Performance On September 30, Victoria Rose Bonita, a professional actress and writer from the Philadelphia Shrine of the Miraculous Medal, performed her captivating monologue: The Secret Saint: Catherine Laboure and the Miraculous Medal. Through the eyes of Catherine Laboure, the students witnessed the story of the Miraculous Medal, which has long been the heart of the Mount de Sales uniform.
Academic Accolades On October 1, in the CPASL, we recognized the students who were inducted into the following National Honor Societies: • National Art Honor Society • National Honor Society for Dance Arts • National English Honor Society • Mu Alpha Theta National Math Honor Society • Science National Honor Society • Tri-M Music Honor Society • Société Honoraire de Français • National Latin Honor Society • Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica • Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society • International Thespian Society May God bless all our students and show them how to use their gifts and talents to better serve Him and our world. Thank you to Megan McCawley ’10 for the festive cookies!

Sounds of the Season Friday, December 10, marked the first Mount de Sales Academy Christmas Concert in the new Center for Performing Arts and Student Life. The Chorus, Concert Choir, and Orchestra brought the auditorium to life with their joyous music of Christmas celebration. This year, students are studying music by American composers. From the orchestral works of Aaron Copland and John Philip Sousa to the show music of Irving Berlin and Rodgers & Hammerstein, the girls seized the opportunity to celebrate sounds and rhythms distinctly American. The Orchestra opened the program with the thundering and majestic Jupiter, from Holst's The Planets. Highlights from the Christmas Concert include Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (Orchestra), Samuel Barber's Sure on this Shining Night (combined choirs), My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music (Chorus), The Moon of Wintertime (Concert Choir), and Sleeping at Last's North (combined choirs and alumnae). This concert featured too many firsts to mention. We are so grateful for the wonderful stage crew (led by
Emma Jordan ’22), accompanist Emily Targonski Leaf '10, Deacon Mark Cohagan P ’07 ’11 (lighting/sound), Mr. Billy McGee P '23 (photography/ video), and Mrs. Kim Dignan P ’12 ’14 for organizing the beautiful reception. The evening concluded with two very special pieces involving alumnae who came back to play with the orchestra and sing with the choirs. All ensembles, alumnae, I was truly honored to and even audience have so many former joined together to music students join us sing four favorite Christmas hymns in a in celebrating this new great sing-along. The performance space: a safe final piece, Sleeping at place for our students to Last's North, brought the choirs back to the challenge themselves, put stage, surrounded by down their roots, grow, alumnae from the past and weather the storms. A thirteen years. I was place to call home. truly honored to have so many former music students join us in celebrating this new performance space: a safe place for our students to challenge themselves, put down their roots, grow, and weather the storms. THE WIZARD OF OZ The Mount de Sales annual musical, the first production in the Center for Performing Arts and Student Life, was a historical event that opened with incredible success! We welcomed full audiences into the state-of-the-art theatre to follow Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tinman, and Lion down the yellow brick road on their way to see the wonderful Wizard of Oz.
“I have had the pleasure of playing the piano in every MDSA show since I was a high school freshman; The Wizard of Oz was my 14th Mount de Sales musical under the direction of Mr. Hosier! I am in awe every time I see the CPASL and am ecstatic that the students can now showcase their incredible talents right here on our own campus stage. I am extremely thankful for everyone who donated and put in the effort to make this amazing center possible.” -Brooke Dignan ’12
The Royal Shakespeare Company version of the classical tale by L. Frank Baum closely follows the 1939 MGM film starring Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale. The Mount de Sales production took place for the first time in many years on our campus and welcomed a young cast, crew, and pit band all eager to participate.
A fabulous foursome took on the main roles under the direction of drama teacher Sophia Guerrero. Dorothy was played by Monica Slattery ’22, whose strong vocals and years of theatre experience led the cast with ease. Holly Bruchalski ’23 was hilarious as her sidekick, Scarecrow, entertaining the audience with her antics. Sydney McGee ’23 played the Tinman with such sweet sincerity, and Felicity Robertson ’22 fully embraced her inner lion, cowardliness and all. The four friends were accompanied on their journey by Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, whose grace and kindness was embodied beautifully by Katherine Kurek ’23, with C.C. Conklin ’23 skillfully portraying the villainous Wicked Witch of the West. Georgia Kelley ’25 gave an outstanding performance as the Emerald City Guard. A group of featured singers and dancers brought harmonies and fun movement to the musical numbers, rounded out by the enthusiastic ensemble of Munchkins. A large student crew managed the set, props, costumes, sound, and lights with help from some technical pros and many wonderful parent volunteers. Emma Jordan ’22 did an amazing job as the stage manager, leading the running crew through multiple scene changes from the Kansas prairie to Munchkinland. The pit band, conducted expertly by Music Director Jeff Hosier, played the lovely nostalgic score taking us Over the Rainbow and into the The Merry Old Land of Oz. The audience thoroughly enjoyed re-visiting a favorite story through such a beautiful and professional production. This show was the perfect way to begin a new era, full of opportunities. Our performing arts students finally have a place to call their own on the campus of Mount de Sales Academy. In The Wizard of Oz, they discovered that there truly is “no place like home!” Angela Romeo ’94 P’18 Producer/Choreographer/Dance Teacher

Alumnae Spotlight Audrey Powers ’94 I had the great pleasure of visiting Mount de Sales Academy in February to meet with students and teachers and to reflect on the impact Mount de Sales has had on my career and life. As a former Mount de Sales athlete and a student interested in science and math, it is inspiring to see what the school has become in the 30 years since I graduated. The gymnasium, athletic field, and performing arts center are great enablers of the team experiences that were so important during my time at MDS. Meeting Sr. Albertine – an astrophysicist from Cal Tech teaching physics – and fielding questions from Ms. Ribblett’s AP Biology class gave me great pride at the progress MDS has made in its curriculum to develop our future female scientists. The day I visited, I also had the great fortune of attending an alumnae open house. I saw many familiar faces that I had not seen in decades, and some other faces that are still part of my daily life. I was reminded of a few important things that have stayed with me since I graduated.

The friends I made at Mount de Sales are still my closest friends today, and the memories we shared during our time in high school are the foundation of our relationships. These women inspire me with their careers and families, and they have been my biggest support – encouraging me as I progressed through my career as an engineer and then as a lawyer – always quick to commiserate on the challenges we all faced in our journeys. Each of them has shown me what faith looks like in their handling of the challenges they face. They remind me what it is to be Christian as models of kindness, compassion, and loyalty in their everyday lives. I consider myself so incredibly lucky to have called this group my family for almost 30 years (Julie, Rae, LL, I’m looking at you.) The lessons I learned playing lacrosse at Mount de Sales are such an important part of my everyday life. To rely on others for support and to have others rely on me, to work together towards a common goal, to share successes and failures and to learn from them and improve - I have carried those lessons with me to every other team experience in my career. I have had the great privilege of furthering humanity’s exploration of space and advocating for our amazing Earth. I have experienced the wonders of God’s creation and observed first-hand the God-given aptitude of humans to create and discover. I can trace to my roots at MDS my belief that God enables these amazing and awe-inspiring things to happen in the universe. As a lawyer, I have learned a great deal about issues of social justice and have helped organizations progress equality and human rights. We have amazing aptitude to support and defend our fellow humans, and that is the model of Christianity I learned at MDS and I hope that I model in my life. How fortunate that I was able to make this visit and to be reminded of my history and my connection to the great work still being done on this hill in Catonsville.

ASTRONAUT AUDREY POWERS’ VISIT WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD! We welcomed Astronaut and Mount de Sales alumna Audrey Powers ’94, Blue Origin’s vice president of mission and flight operations on February 15. She carved an impressive career path after graduating from Mount de Sales Academy. Her passion for learning led her to Purdue University where she received a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical and astronautical engineering that launched into a career that’s truly out of this world! Audrey visited an AP Biology class and then presented to the students, faculty, and staff in the Center for Performing Arts and Student Life. She shared memories of her time at MDSA, discussed her extraordinary career path, and told the remarkable story of her historic flight to space on Blue Origin’s New Shepard. Audrey hopes to encourage young people to consider a career in space, which will ultimately benefit our beautiful Earth. The MDSA lacrosse team presented Audrey, who was a MDSA lacrosse player and team captain, with a jersey sporting the #1 on it, as she’s the first Sailor in space and certain to encourage future Sailors as well! Thank you, Audrey, for inspiring the next generation!

President of the Board Updates
Dear Friends of Mount de Sales Academy: Mount de Sales Academy is embarking on a bright future as we mark our 170th year of providing a well-rounded, authentically Catholic, college-preparatory education for girls. On March 19, we celebrated the culmination of our twelve-year Anchored in Excellence. Charting Our Future. Capital Campaign for Mount de Sales Academy. The future is now! After unprecedented improvement and expansion of our campus, we appreciate how far we have come and chart a new course for the journey ahead. That journey will be guided by a new Strategic Plan. This school year, a cross-constituency evaluation was conducted under the guidance of outside counsel to identify top priorities and develop strategies to meet these goals over the next several years. The areas of focus include: Academics, Student Experience, Mission and Faith Formation, Finance and Funding, Marketing and Enrollment, Facilities, and Digital Technoloy. Join us for a Strategic Plan Town Hall on April 25, at 7 p.m. via Zoom (check the MDSA website on April 25 for details). Participants will learn about the Strategic Plan and can provide input. During Lent, our focus shifts to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. You have come together in prayer, service, and sacrifice for the benefit of our students at Mount de Sales Academy, and we’re very grateful! As God tells us in Luke 12:48, “For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required.” MDSA has been abundantly blessed and you can be assured that we will steadfastly return what God has given to us to those whom we serve. Please consider what you can do for MDSA. For, truly, MDSA would not be on the horizon of such a bright future without you. Sincerely,
Brian MacLean P ’14
Welcome, New Alumnae Board Members! Anna Binette O’Day ’05 graduated from Franciscan University of Steubenville in 2009, and was hired to teach theology at St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis. In a few short months, she knew she had a vocation of sharing the Catholic faith with teenagers. After moving to Annapolis, she joined the parish and also began working with campus ministry. She has been the religion department chair for five years and recently obtained her master’s degree in educational leadership and administration from the University of Dayton. She has many fond memories of teachers at MDSA who inspire her to this day. She and her husband, Garrett, were married at St. Mary’s in 2013, and have three beautiful children. She remains involved in the parish, coordinating Walking With Purpose women’s Bible study. The quickly changing culture has fueled her passion for the value of authentically Catholic education, and she looks forward to serving the Mount de Sales community that so clearly shares the same values.
Julie Simon Gilless ’94 joined the Board of Trustees in December 2021. She is the assistant vice provost of marketing for University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), a dynamic public research university integrating teaching, research, and service to benefit the citizens of Maryland. Julie earned a Master of Science in Management and Marketing from the University of Maryland Global Campus and a Bachelor of Science from Towson University. "Being able to transform lives on a daily basis is the sole reason for my 20-year career in higher education," says Julie. Passionate about education and community, Julie is excited to give back to Mount de Sales Academy as a trustee. She and her husband, Jeremy, live in Ellicott City and have two teenage sons, one of whom graduated from Mount Saint Joseph High School in 2021.

Meet Katie Audy Ferrante ’10
the New Director of Alumnae Relations What is your professional background? I worked in development and relationship management for nonprofit health organizations in Baltimore for seven years. I loved planning events and working with people who shared my passion for a good cause. What is most exciting about returning to your alma mater as a staff member? Though there are incredible updates to the campus, the heart of the school remains unchanged. There is something so comforting about seeing students enjoying the same traditions I did during my four years here. It is very fun to be a part of bringing those traditions to life! What are your goals and aspirations for the Alumnae Association? The Alumnae Association is an incredible group of women who share a love for Mount de Sales and a dedication to supporting our school. I look forward to growing the participation through new events and fun opportunities for everyone. Tell us about your family legacy at MDSA. My mom, Mary Beth Waters Audy, graduated in 1979 and my aunts, TJ and Patti, graduated in 1983 and 1985. While my aunts were in school, my grandmother became the business manager/nurse. Similarly, in my freshman year, my mom became the school nurse and worked at MDSA for 15 years. She retired two months before I started, and I am honored to continue our family’s tradition of working at Mount de Sales. Do you have any interesting hobbies? I love reading, riding my bike, traveling, and trying cappuccinos at every local coffee shop.

A Tropical Getaway
Hosted by the Alumnae Association MDSA Sailors and their dates enjoyed a fun new twist on the traditional Homecoming Dance this year. As they entered the piazza, each attendee was handed a Hawaiian lei with a passport. They spent the evening doing limbo, karaoke, musical chairs, and other fun activities to get their passports stamped. Many of the stations, including the dance floor, took place on the piazza under beautiful patio lights. The Alumnae Association volunteers provided a great night for our Sailors.
