CELEBRATING PRIDE

At Harbord Diggers

WorldPride Sydney 2023 was an extraordinary event that united the LGBTQIA+ community and their allies from around the world to honour diversity, promote equality, and raise awareness about the ongoing challenges faced by the rainbow community. Running from February 17 to March 5, the festivities included a wide range of activities, such as parades, concerts, parties, conferences, and cultural events throughout Sydney.

Notably, the annual Mardi Gras parade attracted more than 500,000 people, making it the largest pride parade in Australian history and featuring the participation of over 200 organisations.

Harbord Diggers was a proud supporter of WorldPride and received a grant from the Northern Beaches Council to positively contribute to the broader WorldPride festivities by supporting inclusivity and diversity for the rainbow community through an activation.

The iconic Ocean Terrace at Harbord Diggers was chosen as the setting for a lighting display created in collaboration with Sydney’s Guinness World Record-holding lighting designer, Martin Bevz. The lighting display was a magnificent and all-encompassing tribute to the LGBTQIA+ community, with six columns on the ocean terrace illuminated in each of the Pride flag’s colours. Accompanying signage explained the meaning of each colour featured in the flag. The main feature of the display was a rainbow-like wave proudly showcasing the pride flag colours.

The lighting display was not only visually stunning but also conveyed a powerful message to the LGBTQIA+ communitya symbol of the warm and inclusive environment that Diggers provides to all who enter.

Other activities ‘Celebrating Pride’’ included Drag Bingo, hosted by Sydney’s best-known Drag personality Felicity Frockacinno, and proudly supported by Squealing Pig Wines, and a Glitter Party to celebrate the last few days of the event.

Harbord Diggers takes pride in standing with and supporting the rainbow community. All members of the LGBTQIA+ community are welcome at Harbord Diggers, and we celebrate their diversity and individuality always.
