Warm Up To Winter Swimming

Where would you rather be - standing in drizzle, wind chilling you to the bone at a sports field or indoor coffee in hand, in a comfy viewing room while your child learns to swim?

It’s an easy answer. Don’t get us wrong team sports are fun and great for kids but learning to swim is not a seasonal sport. Swimming is first and foremost a lifesaving skill.

The tragic increase in drownings is a symptom of more than ten million missed lessons during the Covid lockdowns. Now is not the time to stop swimming. Here are some benefits of swimming through winter:

• Swimming in a purpose-built indoor pool is never “rained out”

• Continuing to swim will help your child improve more quickly

• Children who take a three month break often forget their skills, re-starting can be difficult and frustrating

• Swimming helps build stronger immune systems

• Swimming builds confidence and self-esteem

• Have your child ready for an enjoyable school carnival

• Given the demand and long wait lists, should you take a break, Carlile Swimming will not be able to guarantee you a spot that suits your schedule when you want to return.

So, the answer is, just keep swimming. Still in doubt consider this - Swimming makes you smarter and happier.

Memory function, thinking skills and your mood is improved by exercise and swimming is an exercise for life. It doesn’t stress your joints, plus it burns more calories than jogging. As for making you smarter Griffith University research found children who attended regular swimming lessons are way ahead. Compared to the non-swimming population, the 3 to 5 years old’s in the study were:

• 11 months ahead in verbal skills

• 6 months ahead in math skills

• 2 months ahead in literacy skills

• 17 months ahead in story recall

• 20 months ahead in understanding directions
