M A N LY M A R L I N S & M E R M A I D S S U P P O R T W O M E N ’ S S H E LT E R S Manly District Rugby Union Football Club (Manly DRUFC) was formed in 1906, but records show rugby was played in Manly prior to this - in 1883 the Manly Beach Football Club advertised in newspapers of its existence and that its home ground was Ivanhoe Park. Manly council purchased Ivanhoe Park on 17th December 1883 and ultimately it became known as Manly Oval in the 1890s, locally known as the Village Green. Manly adopted a royal blue jersey in 1923 and became known as the Manly Blues. In 1997, Manly RUFC adopted the name “Marlins”, now well known not only at a grade level, but globally. 4

Manly Oval continues to be the Marlins home ground, with the adjacent Manly Bowling Club offering great facilities to accommodate the Manly faithful throughout the season. Of course, Mounties Group have been proud major sponsors of Manly Marlins for the best part of a decade. The Manly Mermaids were formed in 2015 and played their very first game July 4, 2015. Mermaid Club Captain Janelle Garland has been playing for the Mermaids since its 6th season in 2017. The Mermaids have grown from strength to strength, from 10 players starting in 2015 to now have over 50 players with three players from the Mermaids representing the Australian
Rugby 7s and two Marlin players representing the Australian Rugby 7s. The Club field thirteen teams in senior rugby, 3 Mermaid teams with approximately 35 players, 4 Marlin grade teams with 25 players in each team and lastly, 3 colts’ teams with 25 players in each. Mounties Group is proud to continue supporting the Manly Marlins and Mermaids, on and off the field, with their Ladies Day fundraiser raising in excess of $7,000 last year. The money going towards the Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter. With the unfortunate high levels of domestic violence in Australia which only increased during the COVID-19 lockdowns, the Manly Marlins & Mermaids saw an opportunity to help women in need in their local community. On average one woman
per week is murdered by her current or former partner, 1 in 3 women has experienced physical and/or sexual violence perpetrated by a man they know. Almost 10 women a day are hospitalised for assault injuries perpetrated by a spouse or domestic partner. This year, Mounties, Harbord Diggers and Manly Bowling Club are again happy to support their Ladies Day fundraiser held on 30th April. With all proceeds from the fundraiser to be donated to the Northern Beaches community and Women’s Shelter. Female Club Captain Janelle Garland of the Manly Mermaids is ecstatic for the continued support, “We love the Diggers - the Diggers have helped hold all our important meetings, club personal functions and fundraising assistance with last year’s ladies’ day. We wear the Mounties logo with pride!”
