DIGGERS BACKS MARINE RESCUE M I D D L E H A R B O U R W I T H L I F E S AV I N G TRAINING We have been very excited to support Marine Rescue Middle Harbour with their often life-saving work on our waterways. Operated by 70 volunteers, Marine Rescue Middle Harbour’s men and women give up hundreds of hours of their time each year to train, be on call 24/7 and to be available on the water every weekend, public holiday and at peak boating times. Providing emergency services to assist the community on Sydney waterways, the coastline and up to 55km offshore, the organisation has recently experienced unprecedented demand for volunteering and training. 4

As part of ClubGRANTS, Harbord Diggers has stepped in with a $15,000 grant that will enable Marine Rescue Middle Harbour to provide 30 hours of on water training for 10 trainees. Each marine rescue crew member receives training in first aid and advance resuscitation using oxygen and defibrillators, together with other vital search and rescue skills which are refreshed regularly. Apart from the many hours volunteers spend on the water assisting the community, the trained Marine Rescue volunteers are ever present in the community and stand ready to lend a helping hand in an emergency, be it on
the water, at the beach, local club, shopping centre or the roadside. “Our members come from all backgrounds, some with significant marine experience but equally, many with little or no marine experience but a common purpose to join an organisation where they can contribute back to their community,” says Scott Porter, Liaison Officer at Marine Rescue Middle Harbour. “Donations are critical to our ongoing services as they allow our team of amazing volunteers to save more lives on the water while being fully trained for emergency situations,” he said. Mounties Group is thrilled to assist this vital service to continue to train its volunteers and team members.

The ClubGRANTS funding from Harbord Diggers forms part of the $9.9 million Mounties Group has given in the last financial year which comes from the ClubGRANTS scheme, community cash contributions, charity donations and local sporting sponsorships. These ClubGRANTS are just one of the many ways Mounties Group is proactive in providing support, services and facilities for the betterment of our local community.

M O U N T I E S G R O U P D O N AT E S $222,000 TO COMMUNITY OF B R O A D W AT E R Mounties Group has raised a total of $222,000 for the flood-stricken town of Broadwater in northern NSW via its ‘Beers for Broadwater’ event and fundraising campaign. The club group chose to support the region of Broadwater after 90 percent of local homes were devastated by the recent floods. Located just 20 Kilometres south of Ballina, Broadwater is home to almost 700 residents and since the floods, businesses and streets have been empty. To bring some spirit back to the region, a team from Mounties Group travelled to Ballina on Saturday 30 April to host a special event, headlined by Shannon Noll. Mounties Group Chief Executive Officer Dale Hunt said its $222,000 flood relief fund was a way to revitalise community 6

spirit as much as make a difference to the local economy through a donation. “We were delighted to take almost 20 of our team up to the Broadwater region to host this special event and present our donation to the community,” explained Dale. “The event was a sell out and we were delighted to raise more than $200,000 to help this community rebuild after the recent adverse weather events,” he said. The efforts of the Group culminated in a community event at Ballina’s Cherry Street Sports Club on Saturday, aptly titled ‘Beers for Broadwater’, where almost 1,000 people turned out for live entertainment, food, drinks and other activities funded and serviced by Mounties Group. Australian favourite Shannon Noll
headlined the entertainment performing some Australian hits and his own including Lift, Drive and What About Me. “Mounties Group were proud to contribute a $100,000 donation to the campaign, along with our friends at Shoalhaven Ex-Services Club who contributed $20,000 and Lion and Carlton United Breweries who donated beverages for the event. We also had members from the various Mountie’s Clubs pledging their support by donating the cost of a beer to the cause. “In short, this was more than just writing a cheque. It was about helping the entire area and creating relationships with businesses to come together for the cause,” continued Dale. One of the more personal stories to come from the initiative was that of local
Broadwater resident Tracey Knox who had spent months painting a special artwork of an emu. Sadly, during the floods, Tracey not only lost her caravan park business, but also her treasured painting. “We heard the story of Mrs Knox and her beloved emu painting that was destroyed, so personally asked if she would re-do the artwork at the event which we in turn purchased for a $20,000 donation,” explained Dale. “The artwork will be a reminder of her story and of the resilience and compassion that has resulted from this initiative for our friends in Broadwater,” concluded Dale. Funds donated to the Broadwater community will now be used to assist locals and businesses rebuild, including the Broadwater Bowling Club which was badly damaged. YOUR GUIDE - HARBORD DIGGERS
