In Australia, hearing loss is the most common disability diagnosed at birth and one in 300 children have permanent hearing loss by the time they turn 5. These children are not automatically able to learn to speak and communicate.
The Shepherd Centre is a world-leading, child-safe NDIS service provider and specialist in helping children with hearing loss learn to listen and speak. The not-for-profit organisation has helped thousands of children reach their full potential for over 50 years.
As part of the 2022 ClubGRANTS, Mounties and Harbord Diggers have funded two of The Shepherd Centre’s vital programs via grants to the value of $52,000.
These substantial grants will allow The Shepherd Centre to continue its life-changing programs for supporting
parents with deaf children in the Fairfield and Liverpool areas as well as those on the Northern Beaches.
“Children with hearing loss can have a bright future and reach their maximum potential, achieve their dreams and participate fully in a hearing world if they get the right specialist support as early as possible,” explained Nicola Lloyd from The Shepherd Centre.
“Thanks to Mounties Group, we can fund two of our vital programs across Sydney, our Talk Together program that provides the tools to assist parents and our Confident Kids group education program developing the social skills of children with hearing loss,” added Nicola.
The NDIS provider and charity already supports more than 800 families across Australia. However, this new funding from Mounties Group should enable the organisation to offer critical access to early
intervention hearing programs.
“These grants are critical to assist us to reach more children across Sydney who experience a level of hearing loss. We bring The Shepherd Centre’s world-leading therapies to local children with hearing loss and their families, helping to develop their speech, communication and emotional resilience,” continued Nicola.
The Shepherd Centre’s Talk Together program supports parents through the grief and distress of raising a child with a hearing disability and empowers them with strategies to support their child’s development of speech and communication skills, and emotional wellbeing. These sessions are conducted via supportive group sessions led by specialist child and family counsellors.
“More than 90 per cent of deaf children are born to parents with no history of hearing loss so this program offers specialist support and practical strategies to equip families so they can support their child’s development of crucial spoken communication skills,” added Nicola.
In addition, the funding will enable The Shepherd Centre to run its Confident Kids program that empowers children with the social skills they need to overcome the isolation of hearing loss to connect with others, particularly their school community.
“Our Confident Kids program consists of group education sessions for children with hearing loss. By the conclusion of the program, participating children are significantly more confident in social interactions, with a dramatically improved understanding of how to interact with others and build meaningful relationships,” she said.
“We’re delighted to receive such generous financial support from Mounties Group to support families in Western Sydney and across the Northern Beaches,” concluded Nicola.
This year, Mounties Group’s ClubGRANTS funding has seen more than $1.2 million given back to the local community via 75 projects across Sydney and the Central Coast.

FIGHT INFLAMMATION with Cryotherapy
Inflammation is our body's way of protecting itself from infection, illness, or injury. It’s an immune response without which infections, wounds and any damage to tissue would never be able to heal.
As the immune system recognizes damaged cells, foreign organisms, such as bacteria and viruses, irritants, or pathogens, it produces white blood cells, immune cells, and substances called cytokines, and begins the fight against the problem.
The signs and symptoms of inflammation can be uncomfortable but are a show that the body is trying to heal itself. Most often, they include:
Pain: The inflamed area is likely to be painful, especially during and after touching. Chemicals that stimulate nerve endings are released, making the area more sensitive.
Redness : This occurs because the capillaries in the area are filled with more blood than usual.
Immobility : There may be some loss of function in the region of the inflammation.
Swelling : This is caused by a build-up of fluid.
Heat : More blood flows to the affected area, and this makes it feel warm to the touch.
Our immediate reaction to swelling is to try and decrease it, and ice is often used to slow the blood flow in the injured area, thus reducing its sensitivity. However, it is important to remember that inflammation is an essential part of the healing process, and healing requires enhanced blood circulation.
Inflammation can result in muscle pain, joint
pain, and body pain. To lessen the pain, the underlying inflammation needs to be managed. Many pain medications only mask the symptoms (the resulting pain), without addressing the cause. This way, the problem keeps deepening and the dose of pain killers required to handle the pain increases. In some cases, like rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis, the untreated cause can result in permanent damage.
CRYOTHERAPY has a been a game changer for many and the world’s best kept secret to fight inflammation by exposing your body to extreme cold temperatures for only a few minutes. Exposure to sub-zero temperatures leads to severe constriction of the peripheral blood vessels and taking the blood to the core where maintaining a constant temperature is essential. Systolic blood pressure increases, and more blood surrounds all internal organs. Post treatment, oxygen and nutrients get delivered, toxins and waste products get expelled which can reduce inflammation significantly and accelerate recovery. In addition, Whole Body Cryotherapy is very brief (3 mins) and surprisingly comfortable (the dry cold air feels so much better than any treatment involving ice or ice-cold water).
Are you in pain, and is Cryotherapy for you? Book a FREE consult with °CRYO Stay Young located right here at Harbord Diggers to learn more and how their treatments can help you fight inflammation.
