In Australia, hearing loss is the most common disability diagnosed at birth and one in 300 children have permanent hearing loss by the time they turn 5. These children are not automatically able to learn to speak and communicate.
The Shepherd Centre is a world-leading, child-safe NDIS service provider and specialist in helping children with hearing loss learn to listen and speak. The not-for-profit organisation has helped thousands of children reach their full potential for over 50 years.
As part of the 2022 ClubGRANTS, Mounties and Harbord Diggers have funded two of The Shepherd Centre’s vital programs via grants to the value of $52,000.
These substantial grants will allow The Shepherd Centre to continue its life-changing programs for supporting
parents with deaf children in the Fairfield and Liverpool areas as well as those on the Northern Beaches.
“Children with hearing loss can have a bright future and reach their maximum potential, achieve their dreams and participate fully in a hearing world if they get the right specialist support as early as possible,” explained Nicola Lloyd from The Shepherd Centre.
“Thanks to Mounties Group, we can fund two of our vital programs across Sydney, our Talk Together program that provides the tools to assist parents and our Confident Kids group education program developing the social skills of children with hearing loss,” added Nicola.
The NDIS provider and charity already supports more than 800 families across Australia. However, this new funding from Mounties Group should enable the organisation to offer critical access to early
intervention hearing programs.
“These grants are critical to assist us to reach more children across Sydney who experience a level of hearing loss. We bring The Shepherd Centre’s world-leading therapies to local children with hearing loss and their families, helping to develop their speech, communication and emotional resilience,” continued Nicola.
The Shepherd Centre’s Talk Together program supports parents through the grief and distress of raising a child with a hearing disability and empowers them with strategies to support their child’s development of speech and communication skills, and emotional wellbeing. These sessions are conducted via supportive group sessions led by specialist child and family counsellors.
“More than 90 per cent of deaf children are born to parents with no history of hearing loss so this program offers specialist support and practical strategies to equip families so they can support their child’s development of crucial spoken communication skills,” added Nicola.
In addition, the funding will enable The Shepherd Centre to run its Confident Kids program that empowers children with the social skills they need to overcome the isolation of hearing loss to connect with others, particularly their school community.
“Our Confident Kids program consists of group education sessions for children with hearing loss. By the conclusion of the program, participating children are significantly more confident in social interactions, with a dramatically improved understanding of how to interact with others and build meaningful relationships,” she said.
“We’re delighted to receive such generous financial support from Mounties Group to support families in Western Sydney and across the Northern Beaches,” concluded Nicola.
This year, Mounties Group’s ClubGRANTS funding has seen more than $1.2 million given back to the local community via 75 projects across Sydney and the Central Coast.
‘TIS THE SEASON TO SPREAD JOY THROUGH
GIVING
Christmas is a time to spend with loved ones and family usually with some wonderful food and festivities. But what about those vulnerable in our community who have nowhere to go on Christmas Day?
The Hunter and Central Coast’s largest Christmas celebration has been annually hosted by Samaritans for the past 22 years. The event offers individuals and families experiencing homelessness, disadvantage or loneliness, much needed compassion on Christmas Day. This year, the Central Coast’s Lunch in the Park is proudly supported by Mounties Group’s Breakers Country Club.
As part of the 2022 ClubGRANTS scheme, Breakers Country Club has given a $10,000 grant to the Samaritans to support their annual Christmas Day luncheon, this year being held at Wyong Race Club. “2022 has been another difficult year for many people but it has also been a year of hope and excitement as lockdowns were lifted and we were able to see our friends and family more easily,” explained Sharyn
Becker from the Samaritans.
“At this year’s event we want to celebrate and enjoy all the amazing things about Christmas that we haven’t been able to over the last couple of years including enjoying a decent lunch with entertainment and the opportunity to meet other people experiencing similar situations.
“We expect to host more than 400 people this year for our Central Coast festive lunch which includes decorating our venue in all-things-Christmas and providing a wonderful day of joy for attendees with local musicians entertaining our special guests and a visit from the big man in red himself,” added Sharyn.
The Samaritans are all too aware that Christmas can be a time where those who are struggling with loneliness, homelessness and other vulnerable circumstances are at a heightened risk. The festive period is a time that support services see people experience increased levels of depression, serious mental health concerns and domestic and family violence.
“Through this event we aim to fill a big gap in our local community on what should be – for everyone – one of the most joyous days of the year.
“On the day, the guests are looked after by incredible volunteers, who give up their Christmas Day to help people celebrate in a safe and friendly atmosphere. We couldn’t put on such an event without the generous support of organisations like Mounties Group,” continued Sharyn.
To further cement the support of this worthy charity, Mounties Group’s Central Coast venues will be participating in the Samaritans Christmas Giving Tree Appeal. Breakers Country Club, Club Wyong and Halekulani Bowling Club are now accepting donations from members and the community via gifts for adults and children in need.
“This year it’s no surprise that the Samaritans are anticipating an increased demand for its Christmas assistance. As a charity which relies on the generosity of the local community, we ask that you give
generously in the form of suitable gifts to this appeal,” said Mounties Group CEO Dale Hunt.
“A wide range of toys and gifts are required like gift vouchers, toys, sports equipment, beach towels, bags and books for children, youth and adults.
“Your generosity will help Samaritans to bring smiles to many faces on Christmas Day,” concluded Dale.
Suitable gifts donated to the Samaritans Christmas Giving Tree Appeal can be dropped off to our Central Coast venues until Monday 19th December.
