OUR COMMUNITY
PARKS
Giving back to the community is in Mounties’ DNA. From its humble beginnings in the early 60’s the community has been the reason for the club’s existence and will continue to be the heart of all its activities. The club is associated with a number of meaningful initiatives and benevolent programs that contribute to enhancing the wellbeing of the local community. The Parks Community Network Inc is a nonprofit organisation developed to provide services for communities in South West Sydney, to assist and relieve poverty, distress, suffering, destitution, misfortune, loneliness, helplessness and personal need. Mounties recently contributed $23,340 to fund two projects for the organisation. The Parks Volunteer Support and Development program was designed to provide volunteers of Parks with the opportunity to build and develop essential skills necessary to carry out their
positions to their full potential so as to benefit the local community. Multiple activities were held including training sessions and group activities to encourage cohesion amongst volunteers. Neighbourhood Centre Week and Volunteers week were organised to recognise and celebrate the work done by the volunteers for the organisation and their dedication to the roles. The Parks Vision Impaired Persons Wellbeing Program was implemented to improve the quality of life for people with vision impairment in the Fairfield vicinity. Participants were able to pursue activities such as ten pin bowling, swimming, and walking and community outings. Overall, both projects exhibited profound outcomes whereby volunteers were empowered and eager to enhance work productivity, whilst participants of the Vision Impaired Program were able to increase social networks, reduce stress levels and build self-esteem.

Mounties’ Sub Clubs are all about sparking a sense of belonging and community spirit whilst bringing like-minded people together. Mounties is respected in the sporting community representing around 2,000 junior players. Sporting Sub Clubs provide young players the opportunity to further their
sporting abilities and potentially establish sporting careers. Choose from a number of activities such as soccer, rugby league, lawn bowls, netball, swimming, euchre, Toastmasters and table tennis just to name a few. You have no excuse to not become part of the Mounties family as our Sub Clubs are affordable and there is something for all ages. Why is my hair falling out? It is natural and we all lose hair daily, however while hair loss is genetic, it doesn't mean you're likely to lose hair as quickly as your parents did. Other factors like stress levels, taking certain types of medications or smoking can all impact your risk of male pattern baldness.
What causes dandruff? Dandruff can be caused by a number of things, including dry skin; sensitivity to hair products; and skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema. The overgrowth of yeast can also cause dandruff. This overgrowth can be caused by stress, hormones, too much oil on the scalp or problems with the immune system.
Tips: There is no miracle cure although there are some things you can do to prevent hair loss. These include: • Brush or comb gently • Don’t shampoo too often • Don’t rub vigorously with a towel • Avoid hot-oil or chemical hair treatments. Why is my hair turning grey? Hair turns grey when the pigment granules, called melanin, stop forming in the hair shaft. The age at which you go grey is largely determined by your genes. Sometimes, grey hair can be produced by environmental factors such as climate, pollutants and chemicals, certain diseases such as thyroid dysfunction or unbalanced food diets. Tips: While there’s no cure for going grey (except colouring your hair), there are some measures you could undertake to delay the greying process. These include:

BONES Healthy Bones Action Week will be celebrated across the country on 3 to 9 August 2015 to raise awareness of Osteoporosis and your Health & Fitness team at IGNITE are getting involved!

THE FACTS • Osteoporosis is one of the least- discussed, under-diagnosed and undertreated diseases in Australia; yet poor bone health affects two in three Australians over 50 years. • As bones become thinner and less dense, even a minor bump or fall can cause a serious fracture. • The most common sites of osteoporosis are the hip, spine and wrist. • Fractures in the spine due to osteoporosis can result in height loss or changes in posture. • Fractures can lead to chronic pain, a loss of independence, disability and even premature death - so managing bone health to avoid fractures is a priority.
YOU ARE NEVER TOO YOUNG – OR OLD – TO ACT WHEN IT COMES TO PROTECTING YOUR BONES.
Healthy Bones Action Week calls on Australians of all ages to take three actions to build and maintain healthy bones: 1. Increase daily serves of calcium through milk, cheese or yoghurt; 2. Go for a walk or committing to some new form of regular exercise; and 3. Spend time outdoors to get more vitamin D.
EXERCISE AND BONE HEALTH
There are also certain types of exercise that are better for bone health than others.
Progressive resistance training, which is training that becomes more challenging over time, for example lifting weights, either hand / ankle weights or gym equipment, are excellent for bone health.

Our bones become stronger when a certain amount of impact or extra strain is placed on them. That’s how exercise helps bone health. Exercise increases the size, strength and capacity of our muscles, muscles pull at bones during exercise and bones respond by getting stronger. However exercise must be regular and ongoing to have a proper benefit.
