THOMAS MURPHY A TRIBUTE TO
VALE
THOMAS MURPHY 1937 - 2023
With the deepest of sadness, we inform you of the passing of Thomas Murphy who passed away peacefully on the evening of Thursday 4 May.
Since the beginning of Mounties Tom has been there. From the idea to create Mounties back in the 1960s, he has been there for every step of the journey. As a Founding Member of Mounties Group, as well as a life member with decades of service. Tom has served the Club in many roles including a member of the Board of Directors for the past 28 years and President of our Indoor Bowls for the past 31 years.
Tom was passionate about our community, creating the very first Mounties Sub Club, paving the way for social inclusion for all those who live in our communities. Thanks to Tom’s tenure Mounties Group now has over 50 Sub Clubs in operation with thousands able to enjoy shared community experiences.
Our thoughts are with Tom’s entire family and friends who will be grieving the passing of such an amazing man.
Forever part of our Mounties family.
SUPERTEE’S FOR BRAVE LITTLE SUPERHEROES
Mounties Group is delighted to have partnered with the Fair Fight Foundation to assist with funding and awareness for its wonderful initiative, Supertee.
The Supertee is a medical garment that inspires imagination. It is a modern take on the traditional hospital gown, created especially for children with designs inspired by Marvel characters, Captain America and Captain Marvel.
The Supertee provides parents and hospital staff with an easier way to change garments while accessing and bypassing medical lines. Moreso, it provides a touch of superhero inspiration to brave and sick kids, who need it most.
Mounties Group recently met the man behind the Foundation, Jason Sotiris who founded the charity from his own personal challenges.
Since 2018, Jason has been helping sick kids become superheros. After watching his then one-year-old daughter, Angela, undergo chemotherapy he came up with the idea of Supertees. Designed as a medical garment, the costume acts as a virtual armour for children fighting the worst villains of all – cancer and other long-term illnesses.
“Supertee is so much more than a t-shirt; it’s a way to comfort children and families when they need it the most. The Supertee design is practical, inspirational, and 100% cool. There are currently two unique contemporary designs available, both of which have been endorsed by our friends at Disney and Marvel,” explained Founder & CEO of Supertees, Jason Sotiris.
“We want kids to be recognised as the true superheroes they are. We aim to alleviate their suffering and distress through distraction, comfort, and the wonders of
imaginative play – after all, every superhero deserves a costume,” he added. Two $10,000 grants were provided to the organisation as part of the 2022 ClubGRANTS from Harbord Diggers and Halekulani Bowling Club. However, Mounties Group has pledged its support further to assist with packing and delivering 400 care packs to local hospitals in all three regions in which our clubs operate.
“Supertee aims to bring convenience, comfort, and imaginative play to hospitals in Australia and around the world. In addition to their wonderful superhero-inspired medical gown, the Foundation provides care packs to children with activities, keepsakes and a personal note from Marvel characters,” added Jason.
“We were so excited to have the extended support from Mounties with a team of more than 15 of their team coming together and individually packed all 400 care packs.
There are around 500,000 children a year needing the services of Australia’s hospitals. A significant number of these kids are diagnosed with a critical illness that requires long-term care.
“Our goal is to help a minimum of 28,000 of our sickest children by providing them with products and services for free. We can only do this thanks to amazing supporters like Mounties Group,” concluded Jason.
The first 100 Supertee care packs were transported to Fairfield Hospital in April with Mounties representatives joining Jason and his team for the delivery.
ACCESSIBLE ARTS FOR CREATIVE MINDS BY SUNNYFIELD
Creating bright futures for people with disability is at the heart of the work that member based, registered not-for-profit charity, Sunnyfield does.
Sunnyfield’s primary objective is to enrich the lives of people with disability by creating choice and opportunities to learn life skills through recreational and therapeutic programs.
Delivering nearly 2,000 support services for people with disability, including children, teenagers, adults and seniors each year, Triglav was delighted to support Sunnyfield’s accessible arts project as part of last year’s ClubGRANTS scheme.
The grant was used to purchase art supplies to enable the free weekly art classes to continue from Sunnyfield’s Western Sydney hub.
The Creative Minds Project was an initiative of Sunnyfield after several clients showed interest in art with an emphasis on painting, sculpting, scrap booking and working with a cricut.
Aside from providing an opportunity to engage socially with peers, build on their abilities and find a place in their community that helps them thrive, the weekly art classes also offer participants an outlet to try a new hobby.
Sunnyfield’s Community Services Manager from Western Sydney said the project has been a huge success.
“Thanks to the Club Grant we received from Mounties Group we have been able to purchase and replenish art resources for our Creative Minds program,” explained Amira Salama, Regional Manager, Community Services Western Sydney.
“Service managers, support workers and clients have been working together to design an arts program that represents the type of leisure activities that clients themselves want to participate in.
“Support workers help clients work on their individual projects, developing client’s current skills, teaching new methods and
encouraging group participation. The arts program helps build fine motor skills and gives non-verbal clients an opportunity to express themselves through their art and designs,” she continued.
32 local clients have participated in the project and they have particularly enjoyed using the cricut machine to make gifts for loved ones at Christmas and recently worked on Mother’s Day candles.
“Sunnyfield clients have enjoyed creating their own masterpieces and gifts to take home, whilst learning new skills that facilitate self-expression and further develop fine motor skills,” Amira concluded.
Triglav provided a $2,600 grant to Sunnyfield as part of the Category 1 ClubGRANTS in 2022. With a commitment to support the local community, Mounties Group has donated more than $1 million to 75 worthy projects last year, including those that support youth, families, seniors, children, and vulnerable members of our community across Sydney and the Central Coast.
“Thanks to the Club Grant we received from Mounties Group we have been able to purchase and replenish art resources for our Creative Minds program,” explained Amira Salama, Regional Manager, Community Services Western Sydney.

WHAT A SWIMMING SCHOOL MUST HAVE
When looking for a swimming school for your child, what are the absolute essentials the school should provide to help children grow to swim well and love the water? Carlile Swimming is the oldest swimming school in Australia and based on more than 75 years of teaching swimming this is their view on the “must haves” for any swim school.
An indoor pool with warm water and warm air. The last thing you want is for your child to be shivering through their lessons. Children must be comfortable, otherwise every week you will have a battle to get them to swimming.
World class air handling. If you feel overwhelmed by the atmosphere inside the facility, then it won’t be pleasant for you or your child.
Shallow water and ledges. The ideal pool will have ledges for little ones to explore from. Older children starting out need to be able to reach the bottom to feel safe.
No floaties. learning to swim with floatation aids gives children and parents a false sense of confidence. They also hold children in unnatural ways making learning the skills of swimming more difficult.
A facility that doesn’t close in winter. The last thing you want is for your child to be progressing and then having to take a three-month break.
RED LIGHT THERAPY FOR
Healthy Ageing
Learning with and without goggles. The majority of children who drown do so after falling into water. Odds are they will not be wearing goggles. Some time learning to swim without them is an important safety skill.
Caring, engaging teachers. Look for a swimming school with teachers who clearly love what they do and engage the children. Happy kids, having fun are more likely to learn.
A Program with clear progression. Ask the staff about how children progress. Look for a program where each level builds the foundations for the next.
A swim school with “spare” teachers and supervisors. Look for a swimming school with supervisors on the pool deck always ensuring lesson quality and spare teachers floating between lanes to help as needed.
Reputation. Ask your friends, read reviews. While you can’t expect every parent to be an expert on learning to swim. They will know if their child enjoys their lessons and is progressing. Word of mouth counts.
If you are looking for great lessons for your child, contact Carlile Swimming on 02 9538 7706 or go to carlile.com.au
As we age, we all experience the inevitable signs of time passing – from grey hairs to wrinkles. But the aging process goes far beyond the surface, taking place on a cellular level. Our mitochondria, the powerhouses of our cells, play a critical role in our overall health, and a decline in their health can lead to numerous age-related health issues. That’s why it’s so important to take care of our mitochondria and support them as we age.
One of the best ways to do this is with red light therapy. Red light therapy is a safe, non-invasive treatment that uses light to heal and rejuvenate the cells. It works by stimulating the mitochondria, which helps to produce more energy and reduces oxidative stress. This increased energy can lead to the regeneration and healing of cells, faster recovery times, reduced inflammation and pain, improved circulation, and even improvements in skin health.
In addition, recent studies have shown that using red light therapy can have positive effects on hormonal levels in both male and female participants. This can be hugely beneficial for those experiencing hormonal imbalances and can lead to overall improved wellbeing.
Red light therapy is an easy, safe, and effective way to support your mitochondria and promote healthy aging. If you’re looking for a way to naturally support your health and wellbeing as you age, red light therapy is worth exploring.
Improved Cellular Health: Red light therapy is a great way to support cellular
health and keep your mitochondria functioning at their best. It increases energy production, reduces oxidative stress, and helps to promote the regeneration and healing of cells, leading to better overall health.
Increased Physical Performance: Red light therapy helps to improve circulation and reduce inflammation, allowing you to heal and recover faster after a workout or injury. This can lead to improved physical performance and an overall enhanced quality of life.
Improved Mental Wellbeing: Red light therapy can help to improve hormonal levels, leading to an improved sense of wellbeing and mental clarity. It can also help to boost mood and reduce stress levels.
Enhanced Skin Health: Red light therapy is a great way to improve skin health, helping to promote collagen production, reduce wrinkles, and improve overall skin tone and texture.
Reduced Acute and Chronic Pain: Red light therapy has been shown to help reduce inflammation, which can help to reduce acute and chronic pain. It is also a great way to reduce discomfort associated with conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia.
Wholebody Red Light Therapy is now available right here at the Harbord Diggers. Visit °CRYO Northern Beaches at the Health & Wellbeing precinct of the club and book a free consult or visit the friendly staff.

A look into the immune system this Winter
Written by Resident Naturopath Peta MatthewsAs the weather cools down and respiratory illnesses such as COVID, influenza and the common cold ramp up, protecting our immune system becomes a high priority for most adults and their families. As a clinical naturopath, one of the most common questions I get asked in the cooler months is “How do I improve my immune system?” The answer always differs from person to person. Putting the enormous complexity of the immune system aside, there are countless things we can do to protect our health on a daily basis including:
- The addition of strain specific probiotics and prebiotics
- Consuming food rich in Vitamin C and Zinc
- Boosting Vitamin D with safe levels of sunlight
A common mistake I see in clinical practice is people going overboard with the self prescription of supplements whilst neglecting to determine the root cause of why their immune system is compromised. Supplementation works wonders for acute illnesses, but what is often neglected is the importance of lifestyle, the nervous system,
gut health and nutritional factors for overall immune function.
Unfortunately our modern lifestyle often includes incorrect diet, packaged and refined foods, poor sleep, pesticide use, antibiotic use and an increase in day to day stress. It is these factors which change the composition of the microbiome and often favour more sinister strains of bacteria which weaken the immune system. This leads to inflammation and imbalances of the gut microbiome as well as a loss of integrity in the lining which can dramatically reduce immune function.
Unfortunately, a large proportion of the population fail to acknowledge the impact our lifestyle choices have on our immune system. This is where working with a health practitioner can be of benefit. Thorough case taking and functional testing, including complete microbiome testing, can give enormous insights into a person’s immune and digestive systems.
Speak to one of our Naturopaths today to get your immune system on track.
