Mary Jones Lady President, 1990-2012
Welcome Welcome to the Spring/Summer edition of the Mount Juliet Estate Newsletter. There have been many developments throughout the estate since the last edition. Most notably was the recent retirement of our Lady President Mary Jones. May I take this opportunity on behalf of all the Golf Club members, staff and management to bid a fond and heartfelt farewell to Mary who retired last October after 23 years in office. We took the opportunity to have a word with Mary as she fondly recounted her memories of Mount Juliet through the years; I hope you enjoy the piece. We wish Mary a long and happy retirement and thank her for the huge contribution she made to Mount Juliet over the past 23 years and look forward to welcoming her back to Mount Juliet soon. As always, the entire team have been busy over the winter months making sure our members, hotel guests and friends enjoy the best that Mount Juliet has to offer. The team in the Manor House have been particularly busy; our River View rooms have undergone a transformation and the Lady Helen restaurant team with its new 3 Rosette accolade continue to work hard and will once again impress you with culinary delights this season. We finished 2012 with a thoroughly enjoyable Christmas Market and in February hosted over one thousand runners for the inaugural Run Mount Juliet 2013. We are currently busy working up an exciting schedule of events for the 2013 season, including FORM, a sculpture exhibition during the summer months that will bring you on a trail around the estate with many beautifully sculptured pieces to admire. Many of the other events will be hosted in our new Marquee in the Hunters Yard which is already assembled in readiness for the wide variety of themes we have in store. I hope you enjoy reading the article on our “green fingered duo, Pat and Paddy who are critical in keeping the estate looking so presentable. Finally, I would like to wish our 2013 Captain Dermot Divilly, Lady Captain Dorothy Kilroy and new Lady President Rita Garvey a fantastic year in the Golf Club and wishing you and your family a wonderful and memorable time at Mount Juliet. Is mise le meas, William

Cars for Good A dedicated voluntary group working to enhance services at St. Columba’s Hospital in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny, is to benefit from the use of a new Toyota Auris under the 2013 Mount Juliet and Ballylinch “Cars for Good” programme. Staff of Mount Juliet and Ballylinch Stud nominated The Friends of St. Columba’s to benefit from the new car. St. Columba’s hospital was opened in 1853 and was renamed St. Columba’s Hospital in 1951. It is reserved for care of the older person. The “Cars for Good” scheme was started by Toyota Ireland two years ago and initially charities in the Dublin area were supported. For the first time last year staff at Mount Juliet and Ballylinch Stud were given the opportunity to nominate a local charity for the scheme and they selected the Carlow/Kilkenny Home Care team.
The keys of the new Toyota Auris were handed over to Georgina Bessett and Ellen Kelly from Friends of St. Columba’s by John O’Connor and Colin Donovan in January this year. John O’Connor, Managing Director of Ballylinch Stud said Ballylinch and Mount Juliet are inextricably linked with Thomastown and its hinterland for generations. “So it is particularly appropriate that St. Columba’s, which provides such an important service to the local area, is this year’s recipient of the Cars for Good Programme. We hope this donation will be of assistance and we wish the Friend’s of St. Columba’s every success in the future.”
The hard working voluntary group is 21 years old this year, and is responsible for providing services to St. Columba’s Hospital which add to the comfort of patients. Over the years Friends of St. Columba’s has developed a sensory garden in the front of the hospital and a garden for residents of the Dementia Care unit. It has also funded flat screen televisions, music centres and DVD players and is responsible for email and internet access for clients attending Day Care. The group is also responsible for installing a PA system in the hospital chapel allowing patients who are too ill to attend to hear the service.

National Youth Orchestra of Ireland at Mount Juliet A Viennese Evening ... With a Twist It was one of the glorious stand-out nights of last summer on the Mount Juliet estate. The blinding talent of the National Youth Orchestra, led by renowned violinist Fionnula Hunt, filled the Kilkenny night with the music of South America as tango filled the air on the 10th of July last year. It proved hugely popular, so much so that a return visit was marked in immediately.
The younger Strauss was a much-loved and admired composer in the late 1800s. Perhaps unusually, he was roundly praised by other composers of the era, including the notably taciturn Richard Wagner. Johannes Brahms was a close friend and a huge fan of his work. There is a famous story about Brahms, who was once asked for an autograph by Strauss’s wife Adele. It was a custom in those days for opera attendees favoured by a certain composer to have their fans signed. Yet so taken was Brahms with Strauss and his work that he wrote a couple of lines from The Blue Danube on the fan and signed below it “…Unfortunately NOT by Johannes Brahms.” Such was the esteem in which the Waltz King was held. It is this great composer’s work which will be celebrated in Mount Juliet come July. The orchestra’s programme will have a flavour of the Ballroom of Romance and there will also be some up-tempo tunes of more recent times, all performed with the vibrant versatility and virtuosity that these young people bring in abundance to their performances.
This time the National Youth Orchestra are slowing things down a little and changing the scene from the balmy back streets of South America to the more refined surrounds of Europe. ‘A Viennese Evening…with a Twist’ will bring the magic of nineteenth century Vienna to the beautiful surroundings of Mount Juliet, presented by Evelyn Grant of RTE Lyric FM. Evelyn will introduce an ensemble from the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland for two performances on July 30th and July 31st. Conducted by Evelyn herself, these talented players will perform the much-loved Blue Danube Waltz, alongside some of the greatest and most-loved compositions by the Waltz King, Johann Strauss Jnr, and his father, Johann Snr, the composer of the famous Radetsky March.
The evening promises music of the highest quality presented in the informal yet informative style for which broadcaster Evelyn Grant is renowned.
Tickets Tickets are €20 each. Tickets can be reserved online at www.mountjuliet.ie/NYOI For further details please call Lisa on 056 777 3060

Mary Jones - Profile The first time Mary Jones came to Mount Juliet, it wasn’t the Mount Juliet you see now. It was Mount Juliet in chrysalis, on its way to the thing of beauty that lives and breathes today but not there yet. Her brother, Dr. Tim Mahony, had only recently acquired the estate and was in the process of transforming the land beyond the walled garden into the Jack Nicklaus-designed championship golf course that would bring Mount Juliet worldwide fame. So Mary got to see the beginnings. “We were driven from Dublin with Tim and my sister Joan Hinds and we got to have a private tour of Mount Juliet Estate,” Mary says. “It was in the process of having the golf course built by Jack Nicklaus and the big house was being renovated at the time. We saw all the plans in the office, which in the early days was located in the cottages at the Stud Farm. I was so proud of Tim and what he was doing. He was always so good to me and my sister.”
perfection. In later years, her daughters have helped her organise the little bits and pieces that go with putting on such a competition and such a day. “I took my role as Lady President very seriously and would start planning my next trip many months ahead. Even though Francis took care of everything, I always worried that I would forget something. And indeed, only a couple of years ago, I forgot the prize! Between one thing and another, everyone in our group thought the other person had it when in fact none of us brought it with us. It was almost a major incident but we overcame it – we used a photo of the prize on the day instead! “I always looked forward to making my brother proud. Even after he sadly passed away, I always acted as if he was there signalling his approval and I only ever really relaxed once my speech was made and once the prize was presented. By then, some fine wine could be enjoyed with the many supporters and loyal friends who always made me feel so welcome.
Recently turned 87, Mary lives in the south east of England but has been making an annual trip to Thomastown for over two decades. When the golf course was opened in 1990, she assumed the role of Lady President, a role she treasured up until retiring from it in 2012. The estate was a place she adored and she brought her family here on many occasions. Each of them a downpayment on the bank of memories she has to this day.
“Francis was, and in my mind still is, my right-hand man and I would like to thank him for everything he has done over the years to make my ‘Day’ so special and memorable.”
“My family has always been most important to me and I enjoyed many wonderful holidays in Mount Juliet with my late husband Mick, my daughters and my grandchildren. I remember with fondness how we always stayed in Ballylinch House.
“I haven’t been up to a lot since Christmas, as the weather has been so cold over in England. But I am just starting to play my Tuesday afternoon bridge again at the local Golf Club. Just recently I celebrated my 87th birthday with friends and family and had a great luncheon party. A lot of my friends have sadly passed away over the last couple of years and one or two of them I miss very much. But my grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit me regularly and keep me young at heart!
“When we first started coming over for holidays, my grandson Simon and his friend were seconded to play cricket for Mount Juliet when they were just 15 against The White City Boys visiting from the UK. Some of that visiting team are now famous in England, for example Danny Alexander, a member of the coalition Government and Peter Oborne, political correspondent for The Daily Telegraph. Also through this game, we made many local friends. We still love to see them when we visit, they’ve always shown us such great hospitality.”
As life’s sands pass through the hourglass, Mary finds it harder and harder to make it over to Mount Juliet for her annual trip. But she is looking forward to getting here either this year or next spring for a family holiday.
And I’m getting up my strength for that holiday over to my most favourite place, Mount Juliet!”
Her big day each year came on the first Wednesday of October. Mount Juliet would be en fete for the Lady President’s Prize. For months in advance she would spend time on the phone with Francis in the golf shop making sure that everything would be organised to Page 5 Mount Juliet Estate Spring / Summer 2013
Walking Trails at Mount Juliet

The great Boston comedian Steven Wright said it best. Everywhere is within walking distance if you have the time. On the Mount Juliet estate, if you have the time, we have the walks. Be it a quick stroll over to Walton’s Grove and back that you’re after or a hike around the hills and dales of our world-renowned golf course, the one thing we’ll never be short of is land for under your feet. All you need is the right footwear and a sense of adventure. Leave the rest to nature. Page 6 Mount Juliet Estate Spring / Summer 2013

Boher Trail (Just over an hour) Explore that little bit deeper, taking the paddock walk and branching off it to find the estate’s fairy wrath. It’s in the second field to your left as you leave the main gate to the estate behind you. Keep the pedestrian gate to your left and head for the cross-country course, heading back towards the river as you go. You’ll eventually come to the white bridge and see the House off up the hill. You will have earned whatever tincture awaits after this one.

NOTE Boots are recommended as some walks may be muddy! You may need to step aside to let horses pass on some parts of the equestrian trails
Walton’s Grove Trail (30 minutes) The shortest of our walks, although it loses nothing in beauty for its brevity. Great if you just want to fill the lungs and take in the sweep of the scenery without overly taxing yourself. Head out to the right from the front door of Mount Juliet House and aim for Jeff’s Cascade. The trail takes you down through woodland and along the River Nore with Walton’s Grove on your left, looping back to the House when you come to the white bridge.
Paddocks and River Walk (About an hour)
The history of the estate walks with you, past trees and bridges that have stood here since the middle of the 18th century. Strike out for the river and head for Ballylinch Stud, home to equine excellence for 100 years. In 1913, world-famous colt The Tetrarch was unbeaten as
Golf Trail (Just over an hour) Mark Twain called golf a good walk spoiled. Well, why spoil it then? Take in the sights and sounds of our world-renowned Jack Nicklaus golf course without ever having to swing a club in anger. Start by heading down along the river, keeping it on your left until you come to the three lakes just before the golf academy. Round the lakes and follow the trail on around and up the hill with the second, third and fourth holes of the course on your left. Find your way back to the house, finishing as you pass the 18th and 9th greens. Then head for the 19th hole – you’ve earned it just as much as the golfers.
Between the River and the Lakes (A little less than an hour)
The start is the same as the Golf Trail but eventually you pass by rather more earthy sporting pursuits. Depending on the time of year, fishermen will stand their stoic posts down along the banks of the Nore as you go about your way. Continue along the lake shore back towards the House, keeping the golf course on your left hand-side. Breath the air and feed the soul

Run Mount Juliet February 16th 2013
It was cold but not too cold. It was grey overhead but pleasantly grey. It was, in just about every way, as perfect a morning for running as you could ask for. It was the first ever Run Mount Juliet event at the end of February, when just over 1,300 people came to the estate in various states of readiness. They set out across the splendid course and a couple of hours later they were reduced to a smiling, sweating mass, each of them a winner of their own race, if not the overall one. Brian Cody was the official starter and once he set them off around the course, the grim shuffle and thud began. Gardaí closed off the roads around the estate and the village of Stoneyford to ease their passage. There were three races – a half marathon, a 10km and a 3km race.
Afterwards, the runners were unanimous in their praise for the course and for the organisation of the event. Everybody referenced the testing hills on the estate, which though beautiful to look at and even to ramble upon, made everyone dig right down to their deepest reserves along the way. Part of the proceeds from the day went to the Cois Nore Cancer Support Centre. This is a local organisation which plans to provide gentle caring support for people with cancer in a confidential, professional and caring environment. The Centre aims to help ease the experience for individuals, their carers and families by providing support, information and empowering people at the time of diagnosis, during treatment and after treatment.
Predictably, the half marathon drew only about a quarter of the field – 300 runners as against the 1,000 or so who took part in the 10k event.
The half marathon was won by Tom Harty with an excellent finishing time of one hour, 10 minutes, 38 seconds. In the 10k, Declan Power took the honours in a time of 34 minutes, 57 seconds. On the women’s side, Martina O’Dwyer from the Carrick On Suir club won the half-marathon in one hour, 25 minutes and 21 seconds and the 10k title went to Barbera Sanchez in a time of 36 minutes 15 seconds. BLOOMING MARVELLOUS
started off here in the days when Major McCalmont had the estate.
Look out your window. After a winter that felt at times like it would never end, how sweet it is to be able to suggest such a thing. No need for curtains, no call for blinds. Look out your window and watch spring bounce into life on the lush green Narnia of the Mount Juliet estate. What you see doesn’t come about by accident. Nature is a messy animal, happening all by itself and according to its own rules and timetables. Grounds as wide and expansive as Mount Juliet’s call for diligence and dedication, enterprise and expertise. You’d say that Pat O’Reilly and Paddy Daly have all these qualities in spades, except the pun would be altogether too obvious. Pat is the younger of the pair, Mount Juliet’s garden manager since 2007, having been head gardener for almost a decade at Powerscourt Estates. He grew up on a farm where they kept cattle and sheep but it was the garden area that drew most of his attention. ”My father was a keen fruit and vegetable grower but I tended to gravitate more towards the decorative aspects of gardening. I was always growing plants from seed and I loved doing it.” Paddy Daly shows off Helleborus orientalis, the Lenten Rose (inset)
“It’s funny the way things change,” says Paddy. “Nowadays when you see people arriving for work at Mount Juliet, they walk in through the hall door. You never saw that in the McCalmonts’ time. If you saw a worker going in through the hall door, you never saw them go through it twice!
Pat O’Reilly and Paddy Daly in the herb garden
The other half of the green-fingered duo is Paddy Daly, a fixture on the Mount Juliet grounds for 44 years at this stage. This place has been his life for most of his days, as it was for his father before him. For 15 years, he had a show on Radio Kilkenny where listeners phoned in with their gardening questions and he answered them all. Becoming a bit of a local celebrity was the last thing on his mind when he Page 10 Mount Juliet Estate Spring / Summer 2013
“You went in the back door to work, that was just the way of it. If you go down to where the 10th tee is – there was seven acres of a walled garden there. Jack Nicklaus turned that into a golf course. It was an organic garden and I started down there.” Mention of Nicklaus brings to mind the Golden Bear’s first visit to Mount Juliet. It says a lot for the esteem in which Paddy has been held here in his time that he was one of only a handful of people in the whole country to have ever known that Nicklaus was here at all. We’ll let him tell the story.
“I had the honour of driving Jack Nicklaus around when he first came to Ireland. Dr Mahony didn’t want the media to find out that he was here so he got one of his staff to come to me and tell me to make myself available for Saturday. The next day, this brand new Toyota minibus arrived down from Dublin and I was told to drive it around and get familiar with it over the next couple of days. So I drove away in it, still not knowing what I was supposed to be making myself available for or who it was that was arriving. “On the Saturday morning, I went over to the Ballylinch Stud and met Dr Mahony, Lord have mercy on him. And he said, ‘Paddy, you’re going to pick up a friend of mine.’ He still wouldn’t tell me who it was. But I was to go and pick him up from a restaurant in Inistioge. I got there and who arrived only Jack Nicklaus, his wife and the Golden Bear team. I took them back here, they stayed overnight and they left the next day. The media never knew he was here at all. I was sworn to secrecy. Lovely man. I have autographs but I can’t find them. They’re around somewhere.”
These days, Paddy works on the grounds three days a week and Pat works fulltime. A job like this comes only with the parameters a man sets himself. If you were of a mind to, you could find work for 13 months in a year.
“It’s never done really,” says Pat. “There’s a lot of routine maintenance, verge-cutting, bed-tending, making sure all the climbers are good and tidy. Between May and September, all the grass is cut once a week and it’s once a fortnight or three weeks outside of that depending on the weather. You have a lot of routine work and then it’s a matter of fitting everything else in around it.”
