An inclusive Design and Technology programme that includes design, robotics, coding and engineering projects and instruction. At Mount Kelly we recognize that technology and software are a critical layer of all our lives. It is the language of our world. Into the near future, not understanding today’s science and the language of computers will be as challenging as being illiterate or innumerate are today. Mount Kelly Hong Kong embraces this concept and provides contemporary understanding for all pupils.

The Mount Kelly Hong Kong Shackleton Programme is designed to develop and celebrate leadership, practical skills and teamwork. Involving every pupil, this programme is tailored to different age groups with a universal focus on four main themes: To inspire, encourage and support a spirit of adventure To develop proficiency and skills in outdoor activities To encourage an ability to risk assess and remain safe To introduce pupils to the intrinsic reward of helping others through community projects both at school and in the wider community.

Our foundations lay in Mount Kelly, UK and an outstanding British education. Escorted by our teachers, Year 5 pupils will participate in our annual UK Summer Exchange programme where they will experience Mount Kelly UK and their unique campus grounds, visit the sights of London, tour some of the UK’s Top Universities and explore the distinctive environment of England.

An Inclusive community contribution: A Foundation with a distinctive heart. The Mount Kelly Foundation (HK) will soon be officially established. Once recognized our foundation will immediately begin offering scholarships to disadvantaged pupils from Hong Kong to ALL schools in Hong Kong. Truly and contribution to Hong Kong children that is distinctive in the International Education community.

START OF SCHOOL DAILY ROUTINE Pre-school: Mount Kelly International Preschool uses the British Early Years Curriculum the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and our approach to early childhood education has been formed by the 4 overarching principles of the EYFS:    

We believe that every child is a unique child, and is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured We know that positive relationships support children to learn to be strong and independent We ensure that children learn and develop well in our enabling environments, in which the experiences provided by us respond to their individual needs, and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers We understand that children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and ensure every child’s learning and development is supported.

Each term is divided into a number of thematic units. Teachers will plan interactive, engaging and relevant learning activities based on children’s interests and related to those themes We know that children learn through play, and when a child is engrossed in play, whether it is free play, guided play, adventure play or social play, they learn about themselves and the world around them. By engaging with their environment, their peers and their teachers, children will develop social and cognitive skills, become emotionally mature, and gain the self-confidence required to engage in new experiences. At Mount Kelly International Preschool there is not a choice between ‘Play’ and ‘Academics’. Play is the foundation of intellectual development and the catalyst for solid academic achievement. Mount Kelly International Preschool is a positive extension of your child’s home life. We know that children learn best when they are happy and secure in an educational environment. When children enjoy school, they are more likely to attain the skills and knowledge appropriate for their age and developmental level. Some young children take time to settle into a new school environment and our teachers are experienced in helping them settle quickly. Parents should remain positive upon saying goodbye to their child even if they are visibly upset. The following information may help with a smooth transition process.

14

Arrival and Hours of Operation The Preschool gate opens at 8:45am and children should make their way to the shoe changing area on the first floor to change into their indoor shoes, and then to their classroom for ‘Welcome Time’. Classes start at 9am prompt and children will experience the following each day: circle time, centre time (structured and free play), Chinese language activities, active play/PE, snack time. Children attending our afternoon enrichment programme will have lunch and a quiet or nap time from midday before commencing afternoon activities that complement the morning curriculum. These activities include the following; drama, music, sports, adventure play and continued opportunities for social play. Children traveling to school by public transport or walking should be brought to their classrooms on the 1/F by the parent/helper (after 8:45am or 1:15pm). Children taking the school bus will be brought to the classroom by the bus mother. • Nursery and Reception Class (am session) – Classes begin at 9:00am Bus departure at 12pm. • Nursery and Reception Class (pm session) – Classes begin at 1:15pm Bus departure at 4:15pm.

Using the Washroom Your child will be required to use the toilet independently. We highly recommend that you work on this before commencing the school term. The snack will include fruit such as; bananas, apples and oranges, as well as crackers, bread or biscuits. Your child will be encouraged to eat all the of the fruit. Exposure to different foods at home will support your child in developing good eating habits, and we ask parents to model and encourage good eating habits at home.

Prep School Mount Kelly School Hong Kong will offer a British education, based on the curriculum of Mount Kelly, UK. Mount Kelly delivers the British Curriculum, enhanced by over one hundred years of outstanding practice, expertise and tradition. Mount Kelly, UK combines an academic focus with a broad co-curriculum, offering all its pupils an extended and fulfilling school day. Mount Kelly International School (MKSHK) will adopt this same approach to education. The curriculum will be delivered by highly trained teachers with UK recognised qualifications and experience. Unlike many international primary schools, pupils at MKSHK will benefit from a high degree of subject specialist teaching. From Year 7, all lessons will be delivered by subject specialists, ensuring consistently high academic standards are maintained and pupils leave MKSHK well prepared for their transition into secondary school. Teachers at MKSHK will be able to draw upon engaging teaching resources and technology to inspire pupils though their learning journey. MKSHK’s curriculum will prepare pupils for the Common Entrance Examinations, which they will take in the final term of Year 8. The Common Entrance Syllabus and accompanying examinations ensure that pupils leave MKSHK having completed a rigorous and globally recognised programme of study, enabling them to access top secondary schools within Hong Kong and abroad. Whilst, of course, MKSHK will place a strong emphasis on the core academic elements of the curriculum, we believe that to provide the best possible all-round education and care for our pupils our curriculum must deliver more. Our extensive co-curricular programme will provide pupils with the opportunity to develop vital life skills and interests though activities such as sport, music, drama, art, outdoor pursuits and young enterprise.

Arrival and Hours of Operation Children traveling to school by public transport or walking should be brought to the school entrance by 8.30am. Children taking the school bus will be brought to the classroom by the bus mother. Pupils will be registered by 8.45am and then either go to assembly or stay for form period. Parents must show their Child’s ID card when dropping off or picking up and likewise with the school bus. There will always be a member of staff on the doors to school at arrival time. LEARNING Preschool Early Years Foundation Stage At Mount Kelly International Preschool, we follow the British National Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. Using an integrated approach to learning through play, teachers plan activities that cover one, or all, of the 7 learning areas of the EYFS. The 7 Areas of Learning Communication and Language Communication and language development involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations. Nursery Children will listen to and talk about a range of themes and stories, they will be encouraged to use simple descriptive language to talk about a story or personal events to teachers and peers. They will be introduced to the alphabet and simple phonics and will begin to ask simple questions to find out more about what interests them. Reception Children will listen to and talk about more complex themes and stories and will understand and follow two or three step instructions. They will use increasingly well-formed sentences and will think more about the meanings of words. Children will be encouraged to tell their classmates and teachers about a topic of their choice through show and tell activities, as well as listen to their peers do the same. *We know that some children will be learning English as a second language. Teachers are extremely experienced in planning for differentiated instruction, and support for English as an Additional Language (EAL) will be provided where required. Physical Development

25

Physical development involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food Nursery Children will have plenty of time during the school day to run, jump, climb, build and balance using both large and small play equipment. They will be encouraged to hold a pencil with the correct grip and begin fastening their own clothes independently. During snack times and cooking, children will learn about and demonstrate healthy food choices. Reception In Reception, children will continue to have plenty of time during the school day to run, jump, climb, build and balance using both large and small play equipment. Their fine motor skills will be further enhanced through fine motor activities, and they will take more responsibility for self-dressing. Children in Reception will continue to learn about and demonstrate healthy food choices during snack times and cooking. Personal, Social and Emotional Development Personal, social and emotional development involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities. Nursery The Nursery year is an important time for children to begin to learn skills in toileting and self-care, independence and sociability. Children will be learning to share and play cooperatively with others, as well as demonstrate empathy and self-regulation. Reception Reception aged children will begin to make up games and take part in more complex imaginary play. They will make closer friends and develop an understanding of respectful relationships with peers and teachers. Literacy Development Literacy development involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Children must be given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to ignite their interest. *Pre-reading: pre-reading refers to the skills learnt prior to beginning to read fluently. These skills include how to look at a book correctly, identifying the beginning, middle, end, and the characters of a story, as well as the skills needed to retell a story using the pictures. Phonemic awareness (the ability to differentiate sounds when listening to them) is also great focus for pre-reading. *Pre-writing: pre-writing refers to the skills learnt prior to writing. These skills include developing the fine motor skills required to hold a pencil correctly, pencil grip, drawing pictures and the formation of letters.

26

Nursery Pre-reading and pre-writing skills are the focus in Nursery. Children will have access to a range of books and other reading materials for free choice reading, as well as structured story times with the teacher. They will be exposed to a range of literature and develop a love of books and stories. Pre-writing skills will be fostered using manipulative toys and playdough to develop the small muscles of their hands Reception Though pre-reading and pre-writing skills continue to be a great focus in Reception, children will also be encouraged to use a pencil to make attempts at writing in their play. The formation of the letters will be introduced and children will learn to write their name and label their drawings. The structured synthetic phonics programme Jolly Phonics will begin in Reception. http://jollylearning.co.uk/ Mathematics Mathematics involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measure Nursery Mathematics in Nursery is integrated into children’s daily activities. They will learn to count, match and sort everyday objects and will begin to recognise basic shapes. They will begin to understand that numerals stand for number names and use mathematical language such as bigger, higher and taller. Reception Mathematics in Reception continues to be integrated into children’s daily activities and simple mathematical games. They will begin to play counting games using dice, and to organise and display data through simple numerical representations. They will experiment with measurement using non-standard and standard units of measure and begin to add and subtract using everyday objects. Understanding the World Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment. Nursery Children in Nursery will have opportunities to talk about pictures and toys related to their everyday lives; their family, their school and the activities that they take part in every day. They will be involved in outings and trips to places in their community, and will be encouraged to talk about their experiences. They will have access to toys to pretend familiar routines and will be able to use simple electronic toys independently. Reception In Reception, children will continue to be involved in experiences that allow them to explore the space and society around them. They will have opportunities to learn about jobs in the local and wider world community, as well as about how other people in the world live. They will be encouraged to observe and talk about changes in their environment, as well as to use computers and electronics and learn how to make things move.

27

Expressive Arts and Design Expressive arts and design involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through art. Nursery The Nursery year will provide children with a foundation for enjoying music, musical instruments and dancing. Creativity will be encouraged through open-ended materials, arts and crafts, building with construction toys and exploratory sensory activities. Reception Children will be further encouraged in Reception to make up imaginary play scenarios and stories, as well as use music, dancing and drawing as way of expressing themselves. Chinese language Mandarin classes are blended into the structured Preschool environment. Every day, our native-speaking Chinese teacher leads a Chinese language class. In addition, the teacher works together with the class teachers to deliver Mandarin language games and cultural activities for the pupils to access in rotation. Adopting a story approach, children are provided with a meaningful context of the language and are encouraged to listen to and speak Chinese as much as possible. Storytelling and story reading, as well as various play activities create a fun, rich and anxiety-free language environment, which stimulates children’s interest and creativity. Nursery Children will start getting familiar with the sounds and meaning of words and sentences by listening to Chinese songs, poems, nursery rhymes and stories, which is a natural way for children to learn the language. By the end of nursery, children are expected to be able to speak and understand high frequency words in their daily life. Reception While continuing the development of children’s listening and speaking skills, Chinese character recognition and writing will be introduced in the reception year. Children are encouraged to start writing basic strokes that form Chinese characters through drawing, colouring and other play activities. When learning to read characters, the children are encouraged to use their imagination to make visual associations and draw pictographic characters. The children at Mount Kelly International Preschool benefit enormously from the extensive curriculum and ‘little and often’ approach, to enjoy literacy and numeracy. Children will also enjoy the benefits of music, dance ICT and Chinese language. We endeavour to extend and enrich the curriculum to best suit our children. Digital Learning Digital learning is integrated into the thematic learning of the curriculum. Preschool children have a chance to use Ipads as shared, personal learning devices. Screen time is limited to appropriate use and is conducted only

28

when it is deemed that learning will be additionally enhanced, it will not be a substitute for the rich learning experienced by children when interacting with the environment, peers or teachers. Assessment for Learning Assessment is ongoing. The everyday process of teaching and learning necessitates ongoing assessment for learning, as teachers observe and record children’s skills knowledge and attitudes throughout each school day. Documentation of the learning and development of each child is made through observations regular formal and informal observations, discussions and records of conversations and children’s work. Evidence towards the completion of the EYFS Profile is compiled and passed on to the next teacher at the end of each year. Each individual child’s profile supports teachers in planning the next steps for their development in the 7 learning areas, and is communicated to parents regularly, as well as at our twice-yearly parents’ consultation meetings. The summer term reports include details of the child’s characteristics of learning and a written summary of the child’s attainments against the ELGs, stating whether your child is:  Meeting expected levels of development  Exceeding expected levels or,  Not yet reach expected levels (emerging) We anticipate that most preschool pupils will reach standards above those expected for their age. Sometimes, children may experience ongoing difficulties. The school always discusses these difficulties with parents, and extra support can be offered in the form of resources, additional ideas of how to support learning and development at home, or referral to external agencies.

Shackleton Programme Mount Kelly’s Shackleton Programme celebrates skills in leadership and teamwork, inspired by the efforts of the renowned Arctic explorer Ernest Shackleton. For the young learners at the Preschool, developing social skills is a major part of their learning at school, the early years Shackleton Programme provides children with a chance to play team sports and games and take on simple leadership tasks with confidence. Some examples of activities included in the Preschool Shackleton Programme are; planning and taking on tasks for a class outing, taking part in community projects like beach/city clean ups and team sports.

Learning at Home In Preschool, there are no formal or compulsory homework assignments, though we do encourage parents to make themselves aware of the themes and concepts being taught at school and encourage your child to talk about them at home. Throughout their time at the Preschool, children will have the opportunity to bring items from home for show and tell and make learning journals at home.

29

Both Nursery and Reception children will take part in a reading scheme, which provides children with the opportunity to take home a reading book of their choice to share with their family. These reading books are to be enjoyed as part of a literature rich learning environment, and for story time with parents/caregivers. Children are by no means expected to read the words, but attempts should be encouraged. Having your child talk about the pictures, storyline, characters and make predictions about the stories, as well as say why they like or dislike the book, are all important pre-reading skills that can be enhanced through the reading scheme. Please fill in the reading record book to acknowledge that you have read the book together that week.

Prep School Mount Kelly School Prep will offer a British education, based on the curriculum of Mount Kelly, UK. From Year 5, all lessons will be delivered by subject specialists, ensuring consistently high academic standards are maintained and pupils leave MKSHK well prepared for their transition into secondary school. Assessment: Assessment is an integral part of the MKSHK learning and teaching process, and viewed at the heart of promoting pupil progress. Assessment at MKSHK serves the following purposes:

30

a) Formative: providing information which teachers can use in deciding how a child’s learning should be taken forward (assessment and lesson planning are viewed as being intrinsically interrelated) and in giving the children clear and understandable targets and feedback about their achievements. b) Summative: providing overall evidence of a child’s attainment, i.e. what the child knows, understands and can do. c) Evaluative: comparative information about a child’s achievements can be used as an indicator of where there needs to be further effort, resources or changes in the curriculum. d) Informative: helping communications with parents about how a child is doing and with the wider community about the achievement of the school. Co-Curricular Whilst we, of course, understand the importance of children making significant academic progress at school, we hold a firm belief that learning is not the exclusive domain of the classroom. Our school day ensures that every child is given opportunities to discover interests and talents beyond the classroom, helping them to build character, teamwork skills and self-confidence. Our teaching staff will have the skills to deliver the majority of our co-curricular programme, not only emphasising the importance we place on opportunities outside the classroom, but also helping to cement a strong sense of school community. The programme will include a diverse range of activities, for example: • • • • • •

Sport: Swimming, Football, Netball, Basketball, Cricket, Hockey, Rugby, Tennis, Athletics, Gymnastics Music: Individual and ensemble teaching for voice and for various different instruments The Arts: Art, Drama and Dance Technology: Design-Technology, Computing and Coding Enterprise and Communication: Young Enterprise, Debating and Additional Language Outdoor Pursuits

Shackleton Programme A key feature of MKSHK’s co-curricular offering will be our Shackleton Programme. This is a hugely successful programme developed at Mount Kelly UK, focussed on nurturing leadership, practical skills and teamwork. These skills and character traits will be honed through carefully designed outdoor activities, inspired by Ernest Shackleton, the renowned Arctic Explorer. Pupils from all year groups will take part in the programme and will build up the activities and new skills learnt as they get older. This will go from classroom activities, day trip, overnight stays and week-long journeys that embed values and challenges within the curriculum. 33

Considerable importance is attached to punctuality and registration is an integral part of school administration as well as a legal requirement; the School’s registration procedures are inspected regularly.

Assemblies Preschool In the Preschool assemblies are held periodically throughout each term. These will provide a chance for children to share their work, celebrate their successes and to perform for their peers, teachers and families. Preparatory In the Prep School, a whole school assembly is held every Monday and Friday at 8.45am prompt. On Wednesday, a Year Groups assembly is held. Staff help to organise pupils into assembly and dismiss them at the end of assembly. Form tutors have form time on Tuesday and Thursday each week. In the Prep School, assemblies are taken by The Head of Prep and members of school staff on a rota basis. Each form is also scheduled to present an assembly each term.

Snacks Preschool The school will provide a healthy snack for the AM session and the PM session. Each day the children will be encouraged to eat fruit. They will also be able to snack on bread, crackers or biscuits. We operate a strict no nut policy at the preschool. Preparatory The school will provide a healthy snack at first break and in the afternoon. Please don’t let your child bring in their own snack as we operate a strict no nut policy at the Prep and this could affect the safety of children with allergies.

34

Lunch Preschool Children attending both the AM and PM Session are currently required to bring their own nut-free, healthy lunch. Please ensure that you provide the following for your child: - A reusable lunch box that can fit into your child’s school bag - Reusable containers for packing food – avoid plastic and foil wrap or single-serving containers - Recyclable drinks containers instead of single use drinks can or cartons - Non-disposable cutlery (silverware) and a cloth napkin (towel) - Thermos for any hot food *The school will provide drinking water. Lunch suggestion for preschool children are, a simple sandwich with fruit, crackers, biscuits and a yoghurt. You may provide a hot meal in a thermos to keep it warm. Please note that we do not provide refrigeration or heating facilities. We are currently in discussions with a food delivery company to look at the possibility of providing hot meals delivered to the school. We will notify parents once any arrangements are made. Preparatory A warm meal will be provided to all pupils at the prep school which will be supplied but outside caterers. Pupils will sit down at tables and eat at the allotted time. Pupils will be expected to use a knife and a fork as well as tidy up after themselves. All lunchtimes will be supervised by staff members.

House System Our House system is built upon healthy competition in which everyone can contribute. This can include academic and behaviour efforts and achievements, competitive termly sport, music and many other competitions. The ‘battle’ is for the pride of the House Cup! There are four Houses: Brunel, Scott, Hepworth or Chichester. Siblings are housed together and a House is allocated for the duration of a pupil’s time at Mount Kelly. There is a strong House tradition and allegiance at Mount Kelly. Houses provide a framework for internal competitions.

35

All pupils and staff belong to one of the four houses in the school. Staff are encouraged to award house points to pupils in recognition of good quality work, good effort, good conduct, showing initiative, helpfulness etc. Staff write house points on work or in homework diaries. Pupils then hand them in to their tutors who record them and pass them on to the Head of School who collates overall scores. House Points are displayed in each form room on a chart and a weekly announcement will be made in Monday’s Assembly to see who has won each week.

Preschool Children in Reception may take turns leading and heading their house during school events. Preparatory Each House selects a Captain and Deputy. Each house runs activities to raise money for their chosen charity. The school office allocates pupils to a house with a balance of numbers being a priority. with a balance of numbers and gender being a priority. The houses compete against each other in a variety of areas such as sports, music and the earning of house points. Members of staff are also assigned to each house and children will have the opportunity to be be head of the House and lead the team in school events.

36

House Points & Sanctions Preschool For very young children, the House Point system is integrated into the daily positive reinforcement practices of their classroom. We know that young children learn behaviours through positive role models, so teachers focus their efforts on guiding the behaviour of the children through active listening techniques and positive reinforcement. We do not use strict time out or punishment methods to enforce good behaviour. Any behavioural issues that may arise will be discussed with the Head of Preschool and an individual plan for action should be devised between the school staff and parents where appropriate. Preparatory The school aims to promote high standards of behaviour, self-discipline and learning through positive encouragement and rewards. Pupil’s work will be recognised verbally by teachers in class and comments, marks etc. can be used to reinforce this positive feedback on the pupil’s progress. We believe praise is vitally important in school to encourage good behaviour and progress. Staff are encouraged to nominate pupils who produce excellent pieces of work for a Head Master’s Award, which are given out on a regular basis.

There will be times when children behave unacceptably. Children need to discover where the bounds of acceptable behaviour lie, as this is a part of growing up. Minor breaches of discipline are dealt with by the teacher directly involved, in a caring, firm and fair manner, having regard to the age of the child and individual needs/abilities of the child. The Head of Prep will monitor decisions and suggest an action plan with staff and parental involvement. Normal sanctions include a verbal reprimand and reminder of expected behaviour. A teacher might move a child to sit alone in class or require the child to apologise either verbally or in the form of a letter that is signed by the pupils’ parents.

37

Positions of Responsibility Pupils are encouraged to realise that good behaviour makes everyone’s life better, including the relationships amongst themselves and with the staff. School positions of responsibility, such as Form Captain and Prefects, are clearly the result of good, positive friendships and behaviour. School colours, merits, stars and commendations are awarded for valuable contributions to community life as well as for effort, initiative and academic work.

Pupil ID Cards Preschool Parents will receive two ID cards that include their child’s name and picture, and a code number. Anyone picking up the child from school must show a valid pupil ID card in order to enter the building and collect the child from the classroom. Parents or Helpers who are picking up or dropping off at school pick up points must also show the pupil ID card to ensure the safety of pupils at all times. If a pupil ID card is lost please contact the school office immediately. That card will become invalid for collection of your child. A charge of $150 will be incurred for a replacement card, which will have a new code number. For safety reasons, we will only provide two pupil ID cards and the code numbers are noted at the school office and with the class teacher. Preparatory Parents will receive three ID cards that include their child’s name and picture, and a code number. Anyone picking up the child from school must show a valid pupil ID card in order to enter the building and collect the child from the dedicated pick up point at school. For safety reasons, the code number is noted at the school office and with the class teacher.

38

Uniform Policy We ask parents to help the school maintain high standards in this area. Pupils should wear their uniforms with pride and be smart and tidy at all times. Unless directed by the teachers, pupils should arrive at and depart from school in full school uniform or Sports Kit dependent on the specific day. Pupils must wear full school uniform (including blazers) on all school trips. Pupils must also remember that they are always representatives of the School, and should ensure that they present themselves accordingly. No jewellery should be worn except a plain wristwatch and pupils may have one pair of plain stud earrings if the ears are pierced. Hairstyles must be appropriate for school. Shoes should be plain, polishable, black and of a sensible design. Please refer to the list of school uniform for further guidance. At the Preschool no jewellery or wristwatches are to be worn. Every item of uniform or clothing that is in school must be clearly labelled with the child’s name. Pupils are encouraged to take personal responsibility for their own clothing. Named items of clothing will be returned to their owners. Unnamed clothing will be stored in lost property for a short period of time; however, the school

Money & valuables Pupils are advised not to bring valuable items or large sums of money to school. Mount Kelly accepts no responsibility for personal property brought to school by pupils. We cannot be expected to keep items indefinitely. Unclaimed clothing will be added to the used school uniform collection or disposed of.

Mobile Phones It is not expected that pupils will bring a mobile phone into school. Should a child need to bring in a phone then it must be handed into reception on arrival at school and then be collected at the end of the school day. It is a pupils’ responsibility to hand it in and should a pupil be found with a phone in lessons then parents will be informed and future use may well be jeopardised. Mount Kelly accepts no responsibility for personal property brought to school by pupils.

Electronic Devices As the school grows and lessons become more IT orientated there may be opportunities for pupils to bring in their own electronic devices such as Ipads and other tablets. These devices must be clearly marked with the pupils’ name and will remain in the classroom with the form teacher at all times unless under the guidance of a member of staff. The school will have a number of Ipads which they will use in ICT lessons and we will look to use these regularly in other subject areas across the curriculum.

39

HEALTH AND WELL BEING Absence If absence from school is necessary, a letter of request should be addressed to the Head of School well in advance of the date in question. If your child is absent due to illness, please telephone the school office on the morning the child is away (from 8.00am) or email prep@mountkelly.com.hk or preschool@mountkelly.com.hk . Parents should inform the school of the reason for every absence. In the case of a prolonged absence the Form Tutor or Class Teacher will arrange for work to be set if appropriate. If a pupil is absent as a result of an infectious disease, the school must be notified as soon as this has been diagnosed. If you are taking your child out during the day for an appointment, please notify the school in advance and then sign out your child in the school office, signing them back in on your return. This ensures we keep a fire register up to date at all times.

Pupil illness If a pupil complains of feeling ill, staff may send them to the school office (with another pupil to escort if necessary). In the Preschool, if a child is feeling unwell, the Head of Preschool should be informed and will make a judgement on whether the child’s parents should be called for them to be taken home. Medicine cannot be administered by any member of the school staff, therefore if a child needs to take regular medicine, a parent or guardian should come to the school to do so. Sick children can stay in the sick room if required.

Pastoral Care Preschool In the Preschool pastoral care is concerned with the personal, social and emotional needs of children. For the young children at Mount Kelly International Preschool, pastoral care is interwoven into their daily school life. Teachers support the learning, behaviour and welfare of the children at every stage of their development, from saying goodbye to parents on the first day of school, to making lasting friendships through social interactions. The Head of Preschool has overall responsibility for pastoral matters at the Preschool and teachers provide day-to-day pastoral care and liaise closely with parents and other staff on a daily basis.

40

Preparatory Care of the pupils is one of the most important aspects of life at Mount Kelly Prep. Staff will always put the care of pupils first whenever they are at school or outside, assessing and risks and creating a safe environment for pupils to learn and play. To enable pupils to flourish our aim is to understand the needs of every pupil and tailor their day to foster and challenge them. All pastoral matters are overseen by the Head of School with Form tutors providing day to day pastoral care and delivering the PSHE programme.

Severe weather procedures Rainstorm and typhoon warnings The rainy season lasts from April to September. Parents are advised to note the following arrangements, which apply in all cases except where students are taking external examinations. Typhoons Before school hours: Parents should use radio/television or the internet (or consult the EDB or Mount Kelley websites) to receive announcements on the closure of schools. You may like to download the GovHK app to receive notifications on weather warnings and school closures. Preschool There will be no classes for Nursery or Reception children when Typhoon Signal Number 3 or above and Red or Black Rain signals are hoisted. Pupils will not be sent home on school buses Typhoon Signal Number 3 or above and Red or Black Rain signals are hoisted. Prep If Typhoon Signal Pre-8 or Signal 8 or above is raised prior to school hours, all schools will close. The pre-8 signal indicates that the observatory expects to raise the 8 signal within two hours, giving school and families the opportunity to be prepared. If a signal is raised while pupils are travelling to school, the school is responsible for receiving the pupils and holding them until arrangements can be made for them to return home at an appropriate time. Mount Kelly School Hong Kong will inform parents of any emergency arrangements. Please ensure your mobile contact numbers are up to date. In school hours: With the government announcement of the closure of schools, all schools are to close. In that situation we will ensure that safe and adequate arrangements can be made for pupils to return home. If that is impossible the school will inform affected parents that their children will remain in school until it is safe to release them or until a parent or designated responsible adult picks them up. Pupils will not be sent home on school buses once a Signal 8 or above has been hoisted.

41

Lowering of signals: When a typhoon signal is lowered to no.3 (or no.1 for the Preschool) or all signals are cancelled, all schools will open on the next school day. Heavy persistent rain The Amber, Red, Black Warnings are independent of other warnings, e.g. landslip or typhoon warnings. Rainstorm Warning System

Action to be taken All schools and kindergartens operate as usual.

Amber Please see below Red (For Preschool) OR Black (For Prep) (i) Before the start of school

(ii) After students have set off for school, but before the commencement of school (iii) When classes are in session

All schools will close for the whole day. If the warning is raised at the time your child sets off for school, he or she should stay at home. Schools will accept those pupils who arrive, and retain them until it is safe to allow them to proceed home. Schools continue until the end of normal hours and pupils are retained until conditions are safe for them to return home.

Hot weather procedures During the summer months the relative heat index is used to determine when the environment for outdoor activities poses an increased risk for heat related emergencies. The index takes into account both temperature and humidity to determine the ‘relative’ temperature.

42

Emergencies In an emergency the school will contact you by the emergency contact number that you have given the school. We will always act in the best interest of your child and administer medication on your permission or take your child to the doctors or hospital where staff members can pass over duty of care and give you support.

Child Protection Our selection and recruitment of staff includes appropriate security checks. For all matters relating to child protection issues the Child Protection Officer should be notified. This is the Head of the Prep or Pre School. The school will always seek advice from the CPPU and Social Welfare Department in Hong Kong any child protection cases.

PUPIL LIFE Guidelines for Homework/Prep Pupils at Mount Kelly Prep School are set homework or prep to support and extend learning and individual learning needs and abilities should be taken into account. Work set may include written exercises, reading, practical projects and independent research. There will be allocated times after lessons have finished if pupils wish to complete their work at school. Although, there will be sometimes where parents will be expected to assist with their work at home so that they can be part of their learning experience and understand what their child is learning. Staff will indicate to the pupils when the Prep needs to be handed in. It isn’t always the case that it has to be handed in the following day. Pupils must write their prep in their homework diaries and have it signed by a parent or helper if it has taken place at home. A prep timetable is issued to pupils and parents.

Prep Pupils have the opportunity to complete Prep before doing activities/games in the afternoon. They will be supervised by staff and it will be work that they will do independently. There will be occasions when homework will be set by staff but this will be project based and to be completed over a longer period of time. Prep throughout the school serves a number of purposes: • It encourages pupils to develop the habit of working on their own and to learn perseverance and selfdiscipline.

43

• • •

It gives pupils the chance to practise the skills that they have learned in the classroom. This enables classwork to concentrate on new things and thus more ground to be covered. It allows pupils to be academically stretched in ways that are appropriate to their individual rate of progress. It provides teachers with an indication of pupil performance and progress.

Preschool Learning at Home In Preschool, there are no formal or compulsory homework assignments, though we do encourage parents to make themselves aware of the themes and concepts being taught at school and encourage your child to talk about them at home. Throughout their time at the Preschool, children will have the opportunity to bring items from home for show and tell and make learning journals at home. School Council Two pupils from each form in the Prep School are elected to hold this position for each academic term. The purpose of the School Council is to encourage pupils throughout the School to meet and discuss life at Mount Kelly School Hong Kong and issues that affect the whole School. Regular meetings will be scheduled to give representatives time to gather comments and ideas from all pupils.

Sport and Extra-Curricular Activities Our Sports Department is responsible for PE and Games (including sports fixtures), and organises a wide range of activities that cater for everyone, from the committed athlete to those participating for exercise and enjoyment. Physical education develops pupils’ physical competence and confidence. These lessons are aimed at educating the pupils, about the key components of fitness and a healthy lifestyle. We offer a very broad and varied physical education curriculum within a challenging, yet safe environment. The purpose of games and swimming sessions is to develop and improve the pupil’s skills that are required to play major team sports. It is the aim of the Sports Department to enable the pupils to experience all the major team games and to extend their natural abilities to the full.

We try to arrange as many opportunities for pupils to play in a team and experience a wide range of activities and clubs. Before the start of each term fixtures are published on the school website and in the termly calendar. We welcome your support on the touchline at all matches, home and away, but unfortunately we cannot provide transport for families.

Clubs At Mount Kelly Prep we will be offering a variety of lunchtime and after school clubs to all the pupils. All lunchtime clubs will take place at school and will be classroom or sports hall based. The afterschool clubs will take place after lessons have finished at 3.10pm and carry on till 4.25pm after which pupils will be picked up by the school bus. We may offer some after school sports or clubs that will take place till 5.15pm but these will be optional and require pupils to be picked up as the school bus will have already left. All clubs will be taken by teachers from the school in the first term and there will be no extra charge for these. However, we are looking to add some specialists from outside of the school in future terms and parents will be expected to pay for these termly should your child wish to take part in one of these.

Off-Sport We generally assume that a pupil who is well enough to be in school can participate in activities. If this is not the case, they need to present a letter of explanation from a parent. An email to the Sport and Extra Curricular Coordinator, copied to their tutor, is also acceptable. Please provide a doctor’s note if your child is likely to miss more than a fortnight of PE and Games. The Sports staff will determine the most appropriate activity for pupils who are ‘Off PE/ Games’ which may include watching, assisting or joining another class for the allocated time.
