These are fresh, carefully grown and handled trees with strong roots and great growth potential at competitive prices. Mixed native hedging is at the heart of our business. NURSERY NEWS We’re pleased to announce that after an extensive 3 year European trial of the stunning autumn-colouring Hornbeam Carpinus betulus ‘Rockhampton Red’ (CBRR), the official Plant Breeders Rights have been granted to Geoff Locke who discovered this cultivar of the native Carpinus betulus at the nursery in Rockhampton almost 30-years ago. The CBRR’s spectacular fiery-red and orange autumn show competes with the best seasonal displays of Acer, Parrotia and Liquidambar ornamentals, whilst maintaining the hardy characteristics of common Carpinus betulus. In the last 3 years, CBRR has been displayed at most of the major European tree and plant shows. It has won several awards and was judged by a panel headed by Roy Lancaster V.M.H. to be the best in show at a prominent French horticultural show. We offer a range of specimen sizes of this now patented, unique tree.
SEMI-MATURE TREES Mount Pleasant Farm and Forestry has limited numbers of semi-mature specimens up to 30 years old, mainly of the following species: Hornbeam, Lime, Oak, Field Maple, Yew, Hazel, Poplar, Parrotia and Sorbus torminalis, grown and sold by Geoff Locke at the same location as us. ORDERING, COLLECTION AND DELIVERY Orders can be placed over the phone on 01454 260348 or email info@mountpleasanttrees.com When your order is ready, we will contact you to agree a collection date and can advise whether your vehicle is suitable to transport your order. If required we can obtain a quote for a dedicated same day van delivery. Payment is by card or cash on collection of your trees from the nursery. Payment for delivered orders will be taken just prior to or on the day of dispatch. ALL PRICES QUOTED ARE EXCLUSIVE OF VAT Phone lines are open Monday-Saturday from 8.30am-8.30pm. Collection appointments are available every day except Sunday. Last collection is at 4.30pm during the week and 12.30pm on Saturday. Trees are available for collection from November until early March. Bare-rooted plants are lifted from mid to late November.

WILLOW AND POPLAR FOR PLANTING (UNROOTED) Most Salix (Willow) and some Populus (Poplars) can easily be grown from unrooted hardwood cuttings and sets, inserted vertically into the soil. Often trees raised in this way in their final planting positions grow better and faster than young plants which are already rooted. When established, expect a minimum of 3-4ft of growth in average conditions and 6-8ft at best over a season. Cuttings are taken from our nurtured mother plants to produce quality planting material. HEDGING BASICS Rural We suggest planting in a double staggered row: 4 plants to the metre. To make a hedge stock-proof, your mix should include at least 50% thorn; Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn) and/or Prunus spinosa (Blackthorn). A common mix includes: Acer campestre (Field maple); Cornus sanguinea (Common dogwood); Corylus avellana (Hazel); Euonymus europaeus (Spindle); Ilex aquifolium (Holly); Ligustrum vulgare (Native wild privet); Malus sylvestris (Crab apple); Rhamnus cathartica (Common buckthorn); Rosa canina (Dog rose); Salix caprea (Pussy willow); Viburnum lantana (Wayfairing tree) and Viburnum opulus (Guelder rose). You could consider Fagus sylvatica (Beech,) Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam,) Quercus (Oak,) and Tilia (Lime). Beech hedging keeps its attractive withered leaves through winter but is slow to establish in the first year or two and suffers from water damage. Hornbeam offers similar attributes as beech but is faster growing and easier to establish especially on heavy or wet soils. New hedges require animal protection for around 5 years (see planting sundries below). We can advise on a suitable natural mix of species for your area and appropriate protection. Conifer/Evergreen Spacing depends on intended ultimate height i.e. 180cm (6ft) high = 60cm single row spacing. 300cm (10ft) high = 120cm (4ft) single row spacing. xCupressocyparis leylandii (Leyland cypress) make an excellent uniform hedge if regularly maintained; Thuja (Western Red Cedar) quickly forms a good dense evergreen hedge. Taxus baccata (Yew) should only be planted where the drainage is good and the plants cannot become waterlogged. Special care should be taken not to over water especially on heavy soils.

Carpinus betulus ‘Rockhampton Red’
This stunning newly patented cultivar discovered here in the early nineties and now awarded plant breeders rights, grows like normal hornbeam but its leaves turn orange and red each autumn. It provides as good a display as many of the better known (but generally more difficult to grow) classic trees with autumn colour. Bagging significant horticultural accolades this is a wonderful tree, since Hornbeam is such an adaptable and reliable species. Demand is high so order early to avoid disappointment.
