WILLOW AND POPLAR FOR PLANTING (UNROOTED) Most Salix (Willow) and some Populus (Poplars) can easily be grown from unrooted hardwood cuttings and sets, inserted vertically into the soil. Often trees raised in this way in their final planting positions grow better and faster than young plants which are already rooted. When established, expect a minimum of 3-4ft of growth in average conditions and 6-8ft at best over a season. Cuttings are taken from our nurtured mother plants to produce quality planting material. Cuttings: 9-12” £6.50 per ten £21.00 per fifty Sets (3-4 ft depending on species) £3.50 each £14.50 per ten Selected sets, vigorous varieties (5-7 ft.) £4.75 each £21.00 per ten Also some varieties available in larger sizes - POA Salix (Willow) species/varieties: acutifolia ‘Blue Streak’; aegyptiaca; x ‘Aegma Brno’; alba; alba ‘Aurea’; alba ssp. caerulea, (cricket bat willow); alba var. ‘Sericea’; alba ssp. vitellina Britzensis; alba ssp. vitellina ‘Nova’; babylonica; Bowles hybrid (and other very fast biomass willows); caprea; cinerea; daphnoides; eleagnos; exigua; fragilis; gracilistyla; hookeriana; pentandra; phylicifolia; purpurea; purpurea ‘Howki’; x rubens ‘Basfordiana’; triandra ; udensis ‘Sekka’; viminalis; and a few other. Populus (Poplar) species/varieties: Populus nigra ssp. Betulifolia; x acuminata; alba ‘Pyramidalis’; alba ‘Richardii’; ‘Balsam spire’ (TxT 32); candicans ‘Aurora’; x canadensis ‘Aurea’; ‘Columbia’; ‘Eugenii’; ’Robusta’; ‘Serotina’; x interamericana ‘Beaupre’; nigra ‘Italica’; simonii ‘Fastigiata’, szechuanica; trichocarpa ‘Fritzi Pauley’; yunnanensis.
HEDGING BASICS Rural We suggest planting in a double staggered row: 4 plants to the metre. To make a hedge stock-proof, your mix should include at least 50% thorn; Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn) and/or Prunus spinosa (Blackthorn). A common mix includes: Acer campestre (Field maple); Cornus sanguinea (Common dogwood); Corylus avellana (Hazel); Euonymus europaeus (Spindle); Ilex aquifolium (Holly); Ligustrum vulgare (Native wild privet); Malus sylvestris (Crab apple); Rhamnus cathartica (Common buckthorn); Rosa canina (Dog rose); Salix caprea (Pussy willow); Viburnum lantana (Wayfairing tree) and Viburnum opulus (Guelder rose). You could consider Fagus sylvatica (Beech,) Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam,) Quercus (Oak,) and Tilia (Lime). Beech hedging keeps its attractive withered leaves through winter but is slow to establish in the first year or two and suffers from water damage. Hornbeam offers similar attributes as beech but is faster growing and easier to establish especially on heavy or wet soils. New hedges require animal protection for around 5 years (see planting sundries below). We can advise on a suitable natural mix of species for your area and appropriate protection. Conifer/Evergreen Spacing depends on intended ultimate height i.e. 180cm (6ft) high = 60cm single row spacing. 300cm (10ft) high = 120cm (4ft) single row spacing. xCupressocyparis leylandii (Leyland cypress) make an excellent uniform hedge if regularly maintained; Thuja (Western Red Cedar) quickly forms a good dense evergreen hedge. Taxus baccata (Yew) should only be planted where the drainage is good and the plants cannot become waterlogged. Special care should be taken not to over water especially on heavy soils.
