Facilities The stunning new Bella Concert Hall is at the heart of the Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts. The 787-seat venue hosted a gala Opening Festival from Sept. 29-Oct. 3, 2015. It will also be the new home of the Wyatt Concert Series featuring distinguished visiting faculty from around the globe. Perhaps most importantly, it will be the stage where many of tomorrow’s stars of classical music will play their first public performances, experiencing the magical connection that is only possible with a live audience. The Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts is also home to the TransAlta Pavilion, classrooms and studios to serve Conservatory students and faculty, as well as organizations that rent the facilities for meetings, performances and events. There are three more performance venues at Mount Royal University, each suitable for intimate performances and events: the Leacock Theatre, the Wright Theatre and the Nickle Theatre.

Music with Your Baby For newborns to age 36 months Learn to provide an enriched environment of music and reading for your infant or toddler during these very important first years. Music with Your Baby creates a strong partnership among parent, teacher and child, where you play an important role in developing your child’s full potential. The greatest development of a child’s natural abilities takes place in an environment that is enriched by music and language. This program promotes confidence and self-esteem, increases focus and concentration, increases physical and aural awareness, and fosters a love of music, language and learning that will last throughout your child’s life. Music becomes a social activity where children are motivated by what they hear and see their friends doing. Individual technique is improved through scales, exercises and games. 16 weekly 30-min. classes. Parents are involved.

Music & Movement For ages 3-4 Music & Movement (Eurhythmics) combines imaginative play, musical games, singing and instrument playing. Children use instruments and equipment such as xylophones, glockenspiels, hand drums, rhythm sticks, Orff instruments, balls, hoops and scarves. Creative movement is an important part of the program. Children develop coordination, concentration and self-confidence while learning the fundamentals of music. This program provides a sound basis for children who wish to continue the study of music or dance. 16 weekly 45-min. classes. Parents are involved.

Level 3

16 weekly 30-min. classes

Kodály Musicianship Preparatory through advanced classes, for ages 3-9 Kodály Musicianship classes create a playful atmosphere where children use the voice as their first instrument. Children are actively engaged as they develop music reading and writing skills that prepare budding musicians for future studies: • in-tune singing • beat, rhythm, melody, form • phrasing, dynamics • tempo and timbre Xylophones and rhythm instruments are used to reinforce concepts first heard through singing. In advanced levels, the recorder is introduced to reinforce music reading skills. Parental involvement is an essential component of the Kodály program. Parents join their children for the final ten minutes of each class and are encouraged to share musical activities at home. Children have weekly take-home activities to reinforce the lessons. Classes for Home Schooling Families Classes for multi-aged groupings designed to accommodate home schooling families’ needs: Home School 1 (HS1): for children ages 6-8 who are new to the Kodály music program. Home School 2 (HS2): for children ages 9-13 or those who have completed Kodály training (HS1) or equivalent. Home School 3 (HS3): for students ages 9-13 who have already completed Kodály training (HS2) or equivalent. Winter term 16 classes.

Early Childhood Programs Orff Music Preparatory, Basic and Orff Ensemble classes, for ages 3-8 Classes are based on things children like to do best — sing, chant rhymes, clap, dance and keep a beat. Our small class size, averaging 8 students, ensures that your child receives the best quality music education possible. The unity of music, speech and movement are essential teachings of Orff Schulwerk. Children progress from musical imitation to improvisation and literacy in a playful, holistic way, using their voices to speak and sing, and their bodies to move and dance. Their instincts are directed into learning music: first by hearing and making music, using nursery rhymes, finger games, songs and dances, then by reading and writing it when age appropriate. While they learn, they develop intellectual, motor, emotional and social skills. Children also learn to appreciate a wide variety of music from different cultures, eras and styles, and they will improvise and compose their own songs with the Orff instruments and play together as a group. Winter term 16 classes.

Orff Prep: This is an un-parented class for 3 and 4 year olds which introduces some of the fundamental elements of music in a playful and holistic way. The children sing, dance and play music on a variety of instruments and develop their intellectual, motor, emotional and social skills. Orff Basics: For 4 year olds who had previous music experiences (e.g. Music and Movement classes or Orff Prep) and 5 year olds with no previous music experience. By making music together and later labeling and consciously experiencing the elements of music the children learn about rhythm, beat, melody and basic music notation. Orff Ensemble Level 1: For 5 year olds who have taken the Orff Basics class and 6 or 7 year olds with no previous music experience. The children will learn and create arrangements using un-pitched percussion and Orff instruments (xylophones, etc.). Orff Ensemble Level 2: Children must have completed the Orff Ensemble Level 1.

Early Childhood Strings For beginning violin or cello students ages 3-8

6

Starting bowed string instruments at an early age gives a great advantage. The Mount Royal University Conservatory’s Early Childhood Strings Program features teachers with specialized skills to make lessons engaging and fun for young children while still developing a solid musical foundation. Children thrive in a supportive group setting where games and songs provide an enjoyable child-centered environment, learning through games, songs, solfege, rhythm, music reading and storytelling. After one to two years, depending on the individual child, they will be able to: • play with good posture and physical setup • exhibit good technical fundamentals • exhibit a grounding in sound production, rhythm and solfege • play simple melodies on their instruments • properly care for their instruments

Early Childhood Programs Children’s Cello For ages 3–9 Group cello classes are the perfect complement to private lessons for young cellists. Students will enjoy learning with others of the same age and playing ability in a positive, fun atmosphere. Music becomes a social activity where children are motivated by what they hear and see their friends doing. Individual technique is improved through scales, exercises and games.

There are two levels: ages 3-6 and 7-9. Special emphasis is on intonation, sound quality, bow handling and posture. Reading and rhythm skills are emphasized. Ear training and music theory are introduced. Children have fun in duets, trios and more. This program provides performance opportunities well beyond the usual once-peryear recital with weekly “mini-concerts” and four recitals per year in which they perform group pieces and solos.

Speech Arts & Drama For ages 3+ Speech arts and drama is a boost for shy children, a haven for children that love literature, and a magical outlet for children that are driven to perform. It gives students the confidence to speak, communicate and be heard. They will benefit from the confidence and ability it offers for the rest of their lives.

Rhymes and Rhythms Classes for ages 3, 4 and 5 The developmental approach and small class size encourage young children to develop clear, expressive speech and confident communication. The class atmosphere is supportive and dynamic, allowing both shy and confident children to learn and grow. Children develop a love of literature as they explore “rhymes and rhythms” of nursery rhymes and poetry, responding to the literature physically, vocally and imaginatively through movement, storytelling and choral speaking. Drama games and role play activities stimulate the imagination, and promote problem solving and self esteem as children work collaboratively within the group. 12 weekly classes Ages 3-5: 12 weekly 45-min. classes CRN 1137

Imagination and creativity take centre stage as students explore a variety of contemporary and classic literature through creative drama, improvisation, storytelling and group performance. The collaborative, encouraging atmosphere is great for reluctant children and soon-to-be stars alike!

For ages 5-7 Children will step into some of their favourite — and soon-to-be-favourite — storybooks, experiencing them though creative drama, storytelling and dramatic play. The stories of Robert Munsch, the rhythms of Dr. Seuss and the hilarious world of Helen Lester’s Tacky the Penguin will come to life as we give voice to character and narration and collaborate in building new stories and dramatic scenarios. Creativity and imagination are at the forefront of these playful classes that will assist children to find their voices and the joy of communication and storytelling.

Early Childhood Programs

Suzuki Programs For ages 3+ All Mount Royal University Conservatory Suzuki programs are endorsed by the Suzuki Association of the Americas and the European Suzuki Association. Each program delivers musical and instrumental instruction in accordance with the proven Suzuki method instructional philosophy: • learning to play an instrument in the same way they learn to speak their native language with a step-by-step process based on listening, watching, and building their own “musicalinstrumental vocabulary” • supportive atmosphere, tailored to the learning pace of each child • musical and instrumental skills gained though step-by-step learning • learning instrumental skills before learning to read music and play simultaneously; • individual attention in private lessons, and group learning in a positive social environment; • parental involvement You will attend all your child’s classes and be a practice coach at home. To prepare you for this role, you will participate in Suzuki training prior to your child’s first lessons.

Suzuki Piano Piano students in the Suzuki Method learn music in a simple and direct way, similar to the way they learn to speak. Throughout the Suzuki growing

process, your child thrives in an atmosphere of continual support and understanding. Every aspect of the Suzuki program is dedicated to the child — from repertoire, lesson length and seating at the instrument to the positive pedagogic approach. Parents participate actively, attending lessons and practicing with their child at home.

Suzuki Guitar Every child can learn to play the guitar at a high level. Listening to recordings of guitar repertoire, parental involvement, group classes, daily practice and encouragement are key elements of the Suzuki method. Carefully chosen repertoire will enable your child to build excellent technique and musicianship from a solid foundation of musical awareness. To make studying classical guitar fun we play musical games and learn one step at a time. In addition to weekly lessons, your child will learn from other students in bi-monthly group classes and frequent recitals. These learning opportunities will further your child’s playing skills and motivation.

Suzuki Trumpet The first of its kind in North America and taught by the Mount Royal University Conservatory’s Natalie DeJong, the first accredited Suzuki trumpet instructor in North America, this program will pilot the use of the first Suzuki trumpet book. The year-long program provides balance between working on musical literacy and gaining instrumental skills so that students develop the ability to read music and to play the instrument with beautiful tone and strong technique.

Music Group Classes Campfire Guitar Bootcamp For ages 9-15

For adults

Whether just beginning or experienced, students are given the opportunity to play and sing a variety of fun songs appropriate to their age group. The songs are written out in an easy to understand format with basic instruction on how to approach accompaniment and soloing. Variations are included on how to expand those techniques to ensure all students reach their potential. Class size is kept small so students receive personalized instruction and the set list is chosen primarily by the students. Techniques explored will include: • open position chords • bass lines • singing while playing • simple melodies • basic lead technique • percussive accompaniment No experience is necessary, however basic guitar technique is helpful. Students are required to have their own instrument and a capo. Advanced Youth Campfire Guitar is intended to supplement the regular Youth Campfire Guitar Bootcamp or private lessons, or for someone who already has a background in picking guitar. Students will work through much the same material as in the regular youth class, but the participants will have an opportunity to work in smaller groups and create their own arrangements of the songs

Students enrolled in Adult Campfire Guitar will learn to play a varied selection of songs in a relaxed group setting. Students are given basic instruction on how to approach accompaniment and soloing. Songs are written out in an easy to understand format to afford greater expression and to move through more material. Variations are included on how to expand those techniques to ensure students have the opportunity to meet their personal goals. The song list is largely compiled from student input and is different every semester. Techniques explored will include: • open position chords • barre chords • upper position chords • singing while playing • basic lead technique • arrangement • percussive accompaniment Although this class is guitar based, all acoustic instruments are welcome. No experience is necessary for guitarists, but basic technique will be helpful. For other instruments, reading standard notation and basic technique is required. Students are required to have their own instrument and a capo (for guitarists).

Beginner Guitar

Fiddle Classes with Donna Turk

Levels I & II, for ages 15+ Join our fun and easy-going group; learn to play basic chords to be able to play your favourite songs. Learn cool riffs from well-known songs and scales that are used in the solos of your favourite artists. No musical experience necessary. NOTE: Level II is a continuation — not a repeat — of Beginner Guitar Level I.

For adults Designed for adults who have started the fiddle, but need some help to get to the next level. Work on improving your basic technique, add some traditional tunes to your repertoire and have some fun in our group classes as you develop your fiddle playing. Beginner Classes focus on basic fiddle playing techniques. There are many exercises to get your fingers and bow moving and then add these techniques to fiddle tunes. You should have some experience on the fiddle but still want to learn how to improve your tone and work on basic technique. Intermediate and Advanced Classes focus on different bowing patterns, developing technical skills like vibrato, learning different fiddling styles and touching base on back-up fiddle and harmony. You should be able to play well enough to focus on the music and not your instrument.

NEW! Improvisation for the Classical Musician

Fretboard Harmony For adults Fretboard Harmony 101: Training in the idiomatic way the guitar works in all genres — from classical to country. The primary goal of the course is to explain rudimentary harmonic and melodic patterns used by the musicians we love and to unlock the mystery surrounding the recurrence of these patterns on the fretboard. We begin with fundamental musicianship training and expand that to the guitar. Toward the end of the course we will explore artistic ways to approach improvisation. There is consistency between the musical examples for this class and Campfire Guitar Bootcamp so students have an opportunity to put the theory into practice. This class is the first part of a curriculum that will be valuable for guitarists at a beginner to advanced level with any playing style. Reading standard notation is not required because this class approaches the music from a harmonic perspective as it relates to the fretboard. Topics explored will include: • the function of the notes in open position and pattern major scales • transposition • the location and function of major and minor triads in major keys • bass lines • diatonic and dominant chord progressions • pentatonic scales • harmonic and melodic voice leading • improvisation Students are required to have their own instrument and a capo. 16 weekly 1-hr. classes CRN 1437

Music Training Boosts Brain Development It’s what parents and teachers dream of: early music training is proven to help children succeed in the long run. Music training for youngsters increases the neural connections in regions of the brain associated with creativity, decision making, and complex memory, according to studies from the Society for Neuroscience. And it doesn’t end there.

• Music training leads to improved overall IQ, particularly in language and math

• Better emotional resilience • Bolstered self confidence • Improved attention and concentration • Enhanced social skills and empathy

“Instrumental training for a child offers life-long advantages and the window of opportunity for the strongest impact is before the age 7.” — Miendlarzewska & Troste

Speech Arts & Drama Speech Arts & Drama is both a remarkable artistic endeavour and a fundamental, empowering life skill. It is founded on two main areas of study: training the speaking voice, and performance and presentation in such forms as verse-speaking, acting, storytelling and public speaking. Students gain a deep appreciation of literature and the power of language, and develop clear thinking and speaking abilities that they will carry into every aspect of their lives. Speech arts and drama is for everyone. It is a boost for shy children, a haven for children that love literature and a magical outlet for children that are driven to perform. It gives students the confidence to speak, communicate, and be heard. Learners will develop confidence and ability they will benefit from for the rest of their lives. Mount Royal University Conservatory’s Speech Arts & Drama program is the largest in Canada, with faculty and programs recognized as the finest in the nation. Our teachers are professional speech instructors with backgrounds in speech, voice, literature and drama. Our group programs are both fun and challenging, and suited for children new to speech arts, as well as those with experience. Small class sizes (5-10 students) suit children of particular age ranges, and children may enter the program at any age.

Public Speaking for Children and Teens For ages 9-15 Speak for yourself with energy, clarity and confidence and develop presentation skills crucial to success in today’s world. These classes are an excellent experience for beginners, or children and teens who are nervous about speaking in public. Activities are varied and the environment is positive, allowing students to be creative while developing a versatile and effective personal speaking style. Orderly thinking develops as students learn to formulate topics, organize information and deliver clear, meaningful messages. Effective listening habits develop as students listen to and analyze the work of others. Students will reduce speech anxiety as they develop vocal dynamics and clarity of speech. Students learn to employ important delivery techniques such as use of language, gesture and eye contact to add impact
