We are so excited to launch our inaugural season featuring seven separate series with over 25 diverse events. As a world-class centre for arts education and training, we are committed to providing education and performance opportunities for our students as well as showcasing exemplary artistic achievement in music and speech arts. From reggae legends and jazz aficionados to eastern classical masters to Canadian astronauts, this year’s line-up quite literally has something for everyone. The Wild West New Music Ensemble is comprised of some of the finest classically trained musicians in these parts. Under the direction of conductor Mélanie Léonard, this posse of instrumental masters make a new name for western classical music. With guest organist Neil Cockburn, the ensemble embarks on tonight’s innovative contemporary program entitled Baroque Minimalism. So, saddle up to hear the frontier of new music today. Founded in 2014, the Wild West New Music Ensemble is a Calgarybased professional chamber music ensemble, specializing in the contemporary classical repertoire. Led by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra’s former Associate conductor Mélanie Léonard, the ensemble is comprised of some of Calgary’s top professional musicians, most of whom occupy positions in the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Wild West’s mandate is to promote and perform innovative repertoire of the twentieth and twentyfirst Centuries, as well as the works of contemporary Canadian composers—and is the first conducted professional ensemble of its size in Calgary to do so. Furthermore, Wild West aims to entertain and educate an expansive and varied audience by introducing them to music they may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience.
Since its creation, the ensemble has collaborated with several established Calgarian organizations, including Honens, Telus Spark and the Calgary New Music Festival. In April 2016, the ensemble participated in the JUNO Classical Music Showcase and in May 2016, Wild West performed Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire with Canadian vocalist Sarah Slean as part of the Calgary Phil Presents series and the 2016 Calgary New Music Festival. Through atypical concert settings, its flexible size and playful approach, Wild West is sure to intrigue, entice and entertain even the most skeptical of listeners.
