“I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you, praying always with joy in my every prayer for all of you because of your partnership. …It is right that I should think this way about all of you, because I hold you in my heart, you who are all partners with me.” (Phil. 1:3-5, 7) St. Paul’s greeting and prayer of thanksgiving with which he begins his letter to the Philippians seems a fitting greeting from me to all of you for this issue of MOUNT. Within these pages you will see and read about all of the wonderful changes and improvements that we have been able to accomplish in recent years. All of this has been realized because of you. It is your support, your generosity, and indeed your partnership that have made all of this possible. Without you there would be no tennis courts, no new gymnasium, no renovated classrooms. You who are partners with us in mission have gifted us with your generosity to make these and many other projects possible. As I have said and written so many times before, the essence of Mount Saint Charles as a Catholic school in the tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart has not and will not change. Though changes to curriculum and instruction have had to be made over the years in order to respond to the times, our mission remains unchanged from that with which Fr. Andre Coindre, who founded the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in 1821, charged the Brothers from their very beginning. We read in the Charism Statement of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of the United States the follow-

ing: “As members of a school community striving to embody this charism, our primary mission is the evangelization of young people. Fundamental to our educational charism is the response of Andre Coindre to poor, neglected, and dechristianized youth.” This is our mission. As a private, Catholic, college preparatory school, we fulfill this mission through the ministry of education. Being an educational institution requires that we conform to certain state and national standards and so our programs and curriculum must be revised from time to time. But our mission remains unchanged. Just as our programs require revision, so, too, does our ninetyyear old building require renovation and modernization in order to meet the needs and demands of 21st century students and educators. Without our partners, these needed improvements could not be completed. Through your support, because you believe in our mission, you partner with us and assist us in continuing this vital work of the Church. Though, together, we have achieved much during these past several years, much remains still to be done. With your continued assistance, we plan to renovate the remaining four classrooms on the second floor this coming summer. With that, all of the school’s original classrooms will have been modernized and our high school will be completely wireless. Next we will target classrooms on the fourth floor, rooms that were converted from the former dormitories in the 1970’s. These rooms serve primarily our lower grades which will now include grade 6. As St. Paul says so well, “I give

thanks to my God at every remembrance of you.” You remain always in my prayers and in the prayers of our entire school community. I pray, too, that you will continue to partner with us so that together we can further the mission begun here by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in 1924, a mission of the Catholic church whose purpose is the formation of young people into creative and responsible members of society who will use their talents and intellects to serve others. Through them, you and I can and will help to make a difference in this world for generations to come. Fr. Coindre, who also founded the Religious Sisters of Jesus and Mary, wrote in their rule of life, “When we go alone on a long and difficult journey, we soon grow weary. …On the contrary, when several walk together, they walk with assurance, courage, and fresh support.” Thank you for walking this road with us, for partnering with us in the ministry of Catholic education. For all you have done and for all you will do on behalf of Mount’s students, I am eternally grateful. Excelsior! Herve Richer ’74 President

To answer the question as to ‘why it’s important to donate,’ I would refer to a plaque that hangs on a wall in our house. That plaque states the following: ‘From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.’ (Luke 12:48)

— Mary & Dennis Grady, Current Parents

On my visits to Mount, I have been very impressed with all of the improvements being made to the facilities in order to enhance the educational experience of the students. I also realize that tuition alone cannot fund these improvements and contributions are necessary. I am more than happy to make contributions as a way of saying thank you for my educational experience. —Bob Ayotte, Class of 1955

The Reasons Why We Donate Donors share why contributing to Mount is so important to them

Saint Francis of Assisi said that it is in giving that we receive. This school community has given so very much to me and my family, and I want others to be able to share in this wonderful Mount experience. Mount is like a stone cast into a shallow pool. Giving is one small way I can help to make the stone’s ripples as wide, as deep, and as glorious as possible.

— Donna M. Gamache-Griffiths, Esq. Class of 1990, Past Board Chair and daughter of Normand V. Gamache, Class of 4 ’6

There are two main reasons we donate to Mount. First, we feel a sense of commitment to help ensure that generations of children beyond our family can experience a high quality education at Mount — just as others have done before us - for our family to enjoy. Second, we are strong believers that faith based education at Mount helps develop our children to young adults who recognize the importance of compassion and caring for others in their lives, and to the extent we can contribute to help others experience a Mount education, we feel blessed. —Joanne & Ed O’Brien, Current Parents

I have a few reflections upon my days at the Mount (1947-1950) and its lifelong impact. First, I am extremely grateful to my parents. Their selfless ways and sacrifices made it possible for me to attend Mount. Second, a multitude of thanks to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart for their exemplary teaching in all areas, be it Religion, English, History or Latin and Greek. By the Brothers’ commitment to teaching, their life of sacrifice and prayer, their thoroughness and zeal in Religion class, and their exemplary living, the Brothers provided me with all the tools for life’s journey. These are the reasons why I donate regularly and why I am so grateful for the opportunity I was given. I want to pass that opportunity on to future generations of Mounties. To the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, I say merci, merci! —Eugene Peloquin, Class of 1950

Our Students and Teachers Say

“Thank you to all of the donors who helped make the Fine Arts wing at Mount Saint Charles Academy possible. Your generous donations have provided Mount students the opportunity to take part in the dance program and provide us with an exceptional learning environment. Not only does the dance program promote team work, but it also provides all dancers with a large learning space to develop their talent and improve their knowledge in the art of dance.” —Caroline Wallace, Class of 2019 “Thank you to our benefactors for all of your generous donations. The donations have made new technology more readily available to the student body, have given a new look to the entrance of the school, and have improved the ways we learn through smart technology now available in our new rooms. For that, we thank you and are forever grateful.” —Matthew Guay, Class of 2020 “Thank you to all of the generous people who have donated money to Mount. With your generous donations, Mount was able to renovate many classrooms. Through the renovations, the technology used to teach students greatly improved. Mount put overhead projectors in almost every class which help students to read class notes more easily. Also, it allows teachers to show students more pictures and videos to better 4

understand what they are learning. I would like to thank all of the people who went above and beyond to donate money to Mount. All donations, big or small, have been extremely helpful to the Mount community. Thank you for your generosity!” —Annalisa Pearce, 2018

“Thank you for all of your generous donations! The opportunities your donations have provided make the Mount community as wonderful as it is and also makes my first year at Mount Saint Charles very memorable.” —Meghan Jarret, Class of 2018 “I can’t thank the donors enough for the opportunity their support has given me. The Visual Art program at Mount Saint Charles Academy is by far one of the best I’ve ever invested myself into. Not only do the teachers teach you how to create art from a visual perspective, but they help you create art from your soul. Let’s face it, life can be a strange paradox consisting of a confusing collision of events that are able to twist your personality in any way, shape, or

form at any given moment. The teachers are able to help you get in touch with your inner self and reveal it on paper, through a sculpture, or in words — anything of your choosing really. Not only do they help you find your roots with art, but they become family. It’s an incredible feeling to say the least. You’re able to reveal who you really are when it comes to the art program, and it’s a judgment free zone which is an extremely important factor. Everyone in the room is well aware that you (and themselves) are no Pablo Picasso, but we all come together and support each other no matter how terrible the creation is. The guidance given is always with love, and you can tell the teacher’s goal is to help you reach your best ability, and to me that is very touching. I love my teachers and the friends I have made throughout my two years in the art program. I honestly don’t think I would be the person I am today without them. Your continued support and generous contributions have made all of this possible.” —Jillian Fluette, Class of 2017

“Thank you all so much for your donations! It really makes a difference even if you didn’t donate a lot!” —Mikki Pisani, Class of 2020

“Thank you to all the benefactors who have donated money to help our Fine Arts program! I love being able to meet new people and express myself through the arts, and your donations make that possible!” —Marissa Liotta, Class of 2016

“The majority of my classes are on the third floor, so all of the new renovations have greatly benefited me and for that I say thank you!” —Stephen Dugas, Class of 2017 “I just want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to play volleyball in the gymnasium. Without it, many other people wouldn’t have the fun opportunities that I got to enjoy like playing volleyball, rock climbing, and have a great time during phys ed!” —Emilienne English, Class of 2018 “I would like to thank all people who donate to and support Mount Saint Charles. Their generosity has helped to truly create an awesome environment for students to learn and excel while meeting many great people along the way.” —Colin Cannata, Class of 2016 “In 2011, when I was in the seventh grade, I was lucky enough to become a member of the Mount family. Coming from a small school, I was expecting Mount to be this huge school where upperclassmen ignored underclassmen and the teachers were too preoccupied with their more difficult classes to worry if I did not understand a simple topic. However, Mount was the complete opposite of what I assumed. As my family and I looked at other schools, the biggest reason I chose Mount was the atmosphere I experienced that random spring day I shadowed. Most schools are all about the competition whereas, here at Mount, there is a thriving tradition of excellence that is meant to support any type of student. I could not believe how supportive and enthusiastic the teachers were about teaching junior

2 0 1 4

and senior high students. Students in the grades above and below mine even became some of my closest friends. Last year, I received the George E. Tessier Memorial Scholarship. Mr. Tessier used to be a teacher at Mount and Ms. Sue Tessier, one of our guidance counselors, is his sister. It is so generous of the Tessier family to provide this scholarship to one special eighth grade student each year. It’s really incredible that Mount has so many alumni and staff who donate to the current students to give them opportunities like these throughout their academic career. The scholarship I received and the experience I’ve had at Mount is something I’ll always be grateful for.” —Lucy Baxter, Class of 2018 “Thank you to all of our donors for making the Mount experience possible for me. Without you, I would not be able to take part in this amazing school community!” — Marcus Mojica, Class of 2018 “The new classrooms at Mount Saint Charles provide a clean and modern learning environment for all Mount students. Without your support, the renovation of these rooms would be impossible. Also, as a high school tennis player, the new courts at Mount were a dream come true. Before the addition of the tennis courts to the Mount campus, players would have to be bussed to Lincoln for all practices and matches. With the building of our new courts, our tennis players are able to represent Mount on beautiful courts located on-site. Thank you donors! —Thomas Marcet, Class of 2015 “The opportunity given to these young men and women goes so far beyond a great education. You’ve afforded them a chance to become part of a special community where they are known, valued and treasured.

Mount will forever become a part of their identity and the gift they have been given will serve them, as well as those they ‘touch,’ for the rest of their lives.” — Robert Greco, Teacher “There are times during my school day when I walk out of the building and walk over to the tennis courts. Often, I think how amazing all of this is. I have read the words on the donor bricks many times. I have read the words inscribed on the benches many times. I have read the names on the plaques fastened to each of the courts many times. I sometimes sit on one of those benches, let the sun hit my face and I think — all of this because of so many generous people. To all of those people who helped to make this very real — I say thank you! Generations of children will benefit from what you helped to create.” —Richard Lawrence, Athletic Director “Thanks to all the Mounties who help us carry on the school’s tradition with new generations of students. The names and faces may change, but the Mount family just keeps growing and getting stronger with each passing year. As one who has been here long enough to have had the pleasure of teaching many of your children, I thank you for your continued support from the bottom of my heart.” —Stephen Shea, Teacher “It is such a privilege to have the addition of the tennis courts to our campus. It has allowed the tennis program to continue to improve as well as host various tennis events and tournaments.” — Ruth Lepre, Junior High Tennis Coach & Teacher 5

My name is Molly Berard, and I have attended Mount Saint Charles Academy from the Molly Berard ’15 ninth grade to this, my senior year. With the exception of fourth and fifth grade, I have attended Catholic schools my whole life. Initially, my parents and I weren’t sure that my high school career would be at Mount. My mom works as a fifth grade teacher at Good Shepherd, and my dad is now retired from his position as administrator of the CYO Center of Northern Rhode Island. With both of parents working for the church, money is tight and, though coming to Mount was my dream, I didn’t think it would be possible. Both of my brothers went to public school, so I had to prepare myself to go there as well. However, my parents let me take the entrance exam for Mount Saint Charles, and I was accepted. Following my acceptance, the waiting game began to see how much financial aid we received. Mount was very generous, but my family still wasn’t sure that it was enough. Nonetheless, I received notice that I was awarded a scholarship. This very generous scholarship sealed my fate at Mount, making it affordable enough for my parents to send 6

me here. Without this scholarship and the others I have received, I would not be at Mount today. Even though I was prepared to go to public school because Mount’s tuition seemed like something my family wouldn’t be able to afford, I cried and prayed that, by some miracle, I could attend Mount. My prayers were answered by generous donors. I believe that receiving scholarships is a very high honor, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to attend a school as renowned as Mount Saint Charles Academy. My family is so appreciative for all the help we’ve received, and each year I have been able to return to Mount has been such a blessing. Without the generosity of others, I would not be a Mount senior who has already been accepted into one of the colleges I applied to for Pharmacy. Having an education from Mount sets me apart from other applying seniors because of the Academy’s rigorous curriculum. I received the highest merit scholarship given at Western New England University because of my academic background, and I hope that my three other colleges will appreciate the excellence of Mount’s education as well. The only reason I am at Mount Saint Charles today is because of generous donors who provide scholarships for students like me. I wanted nothing more than to come to Mount for high school. The assistance provided

to my family through my scholarships made my dream a reality. I acknowledge each scholarship I receive as a gift and a privilege that must be earned. Each year I am so grateful that someone noticed my hard work and felt I deserved assistance. Scholarships provided by Mount alumni can be the determining factor if a student can afford to attend Mount. Very few schools are as generous with scholarships as Mount is. Because of the help of donors, students who wish to learn at Mount but couldn’t afford it are able to receive the best education offered in the area. My brothers tease me about being the only one in my family to attend Mount, but I know they are really happy that I had this opportunity. They can see the difference between my education and theirs. Our grades are equal, but I have been challenged every year. My grades are earned through my hard work, as well as the hard work of many great teachers. At my brothers’ school, they didn’t have to work as hard. The work ethic of the students was nowhere near what it is at Mount. Mount Saint Charles instills in us that if we work hard, help others, and believe in ourselves, we can accomplish anything. This lesson has become a part of me, and without generous donors who fund the many scholarships given to Mount students, I would not be the motivated student I am today.

The past two years, as many of you well know, have been devoted to the celebration Adam Mercier ’15 of Mount Pride. Whether it is viewed from the banners hanging on our athletic fields or seen in the new logos, to being felt in the renovated classrooms, there is an increased vigor that seems to have permeated our school especially with the start of this year. In a sense, I am speaking to you today under the same banner — Mount Pride. I only speak, however, because I reached this course somewhat differently than my peers. In the 6th grade, my public school career took a sharp downturn. I had always been at the head of my class academically, but at the end of the rope socially. I was an outcast and put aside from the rest of my classmates. Private school was not an option simply because of the financial state my family was in. Even with my father working 60 hour weeks as a freight truck driver and my mother working from home, the allure of Catholic or even private education was just a glimmer on the horizon. Nonetheless, fate would have it that, by a newspaper advertisement, a call from an excited grandmother and a few overheard “do what your mother

2 0 1 4

tells you!” (though I’ll call them exclamations) coming from the other end of a telephone, I wound up in the cushy, oversized chairs of Mount’s reception room taking the late admissions test. Sure enough, a few days later, the news had been delivered. Accepted. I was accepted into the Mount Saint Charles Academy honors program. Our phone receiver almost exploded when my grandmother heard the news. But there was still one glaring problem: the cost. I knew attending Mount without significant financial aid was impossible, and I needed more financial aid than the school regularly gives. For days on end, my mother and father called the school and asked what was possible, if there were any exceptions, and if anything could be done in order to get me to Mount. Through the help of the generosity of people such as yourselves, there was. When I look at what has brought me here, I am forced to remember what my father told me on the night that we received the help we needed. He sat me down and said something along these lines: “You have been given a great opportunity, Adam, and I hope you know that. But I also hope you know that with your opportunity comes responsibility. You are able to go to Mount because people invest in you, people see the worth in you and make things happen so that you can come here and grow. You are here because people make sacri-

fices for you, both me and your mother and people at the school and beyond. And for that, you’ve been very blessed.” I owe a greater debt than I could ever repay. I owe my being able to attend this school, be a part of this ministry, and experience the love felt here every single day directly to the actions of benefactors, past, present, and future. And so, from the bottom of my heart, I sincerely thank anyone who has been a part of my journey. Your compassion is what has changed me from being a solitary and singular person to having been elected class president twice and the person before you today. Your generosity is what has enabled me to get my first job. Were it not for my Mount Saint Charles Academy transcript, I would not have qualified for the position I currently hold. But the story has not ended here for my family. My sisters, Emily ‘17 and Rachel ‘19, have also followed this path as a result of your kindness. Your gift is what continues to drive myself and many others, because we understand what has been entrusted to us. The opportunity you provide is what enables so many of us to grow into the men and women that we are and will become.

Progress on the Mount In anticipation of Mount’s future, for more than 10 years the Academy has been embarking upon a vast renovation initiative which has been made possible through the school’s annual fund, walkathon, auction, and designated donations. Even though the tuition pays for the daily operation of the Academy, the money raised through the Department of Institutional Advancement affords Mount the opportunity to undertake capital projects and increase the amount of financial aid offered. This past summer, $1.3 million was invested into the Academy which included replacing the upper part of the enormous majestic granite staircase at the front of the school and creating a new main entryway at the back of the school. The roof on the Br. Adelard hockey arena was replaced and half of the second floor, including four classrooms and an office, were gutted and completely updated. In the summer of 2015, the rest of the second floor will be completed. In 2013, construction finished on a brand new tennis courts complex located on Logee Street across from the main school building. For the first time in the Academy’s 91 year history, Mount finally has home courts. Previous to this,

A HUGE THANK YOU The Mount Saint Charles Academy family sends a huge thank you to Jerry and Georgie Knueven and the Knueven Family Trust. Grandparents to a current Mountie and two Mount alumnus, they’ve donated a total of $200,000

to upgrade the technology and add interactive white-boards in all of our renovated classrooms. The new technology their very generous donation provided, has allowed Mount to respond to the needs of our current students as well as the
