Dear Friends of Mount,
O
nce again it brings me great pleasure to send you the greetings of the Academy and to share with you highlights and news from our school community. It’s always with great joy that I meet you in the pages of this magazine as we come together to celebrate all that is good about our school. I hope that as you journey through these pages you too will find some measure of joy, perhaps, in reminiscing about your time here or in sharing in news of Mount today. In this issue, we celebrate legacy, which normally brings focus on generations of families who have shared in a similar experience. And we certainly have many legacy families as so many of our current students and recent graduates are children and grandchildren of alumni, and so many of our more recent alumni who now have young families often share with me their desire to enroll their children here in the coming years. Legacy, though, reaches beyond familial bonds. By definition, legacy is anything which is transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor or from the past. So as you and I continue to work together to support Mount and its mission, as we plan for our school’s future and prepare our school to meet the challenges of educating new generations of students, we are preserving a legacy from the past for those young men and women who will follow us through these halls and like us be educated in the tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. We make it possible for new generations of students to share in what we have experienced and in what we treasure. We make it possible for newer generations of students to share in our tradition of educational excellence. And we make it possible for future generations of students to continue to spread the mission of the school, a mission with its roots in the founding of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Lyons, France, in 1821. Ours is indeed a rich legacy well worth preserving and passing on. At our most recent Excelsior Dinner and Excelsior Hall of Fame induction, I shared a reflection with our guests a portion of which I feel is

worth sharing with you now. I think it speaks of what the legacy is that we seek to share with new generations of Mounties. The evening before my most recent annual physical, I received a phone call from my doctor’s office and was told that the doctor I was expecting to see was no longer seeing patients at the practice. I was asked if I would mind seeing the physician’s assistant. Not wanting to reschedule the appointment, I agreed, but was taken somewhat aback upon learning that the PA was a former student, a member of the Class of 2009, Sean Calnan. So, yes, it was a little strange to encounter this young man in this situation. As with all students whom I have encountered in my 32 years, I always think of them as the young students they were when they were in this building. But here was this young man greeting me not as student to principal, but as professional to patient. And he was very good in his role. It did my heart good to know that this Mountie would be serving patients in his clinic in the same manner in which he was treating me. I was, needless to say, quite proud. This encounter caused me to reflect on the fact that in all different corners of this country, and even across the world, the young men and women whom I have known as students are now, in the spirit of our mission statement, sharing their gifts and talents with others. Indeed, generations of Mounties since 1924 have made our mission statement come to life as they, as people of faith, use their gifts and talents to serve others. That is our legacy. Alan Tenreiro, Class of 1992, is the principal of Cumberland High School and was recently named Rhode Island High School Principal of the year. Jill Savini Moynihan, Class of ’95, her husband, Matt, and her sister, Gina, Class of ’98, run a very successful restaurant in Woonsocket, Ciro’s, and are active in civic affairs. Jon Courtot, Class of ’05, lives and works in California producing movies and television shows. His brother Doug, Class of ’09, is working in the energy field in Wyoming and dedicating himself to the future energy needs of our nation. Brendan Ryan, Class of 2011, is in seminary studies in Rome. Among
the 15 members of the MSC Board of Directors are 9 alumni, 3 brothers who formerly taught here, and 3 parents of alumni. This is but a short list. I know there are countless other examples of alumni, brothers, and parents of alumni, most of whom are like you reuniting with us in the pages of this magazine, and all of whom keep the legacy of Mount Saint Charles Academy alive through their very lives. We all believe that Mount has been and continues to be a force for change in our world. A Mount education is preparation for life as we help our students discover what God has planned for them. There is unlimited potential for good in each and every young man and woman who walks through our doors. When that good is unleashed into the world, the world does, indeed, become a better place one person at a time. Our mission — our legacy — is simply this: to make the love of God known, for it is this, and only this, that will make the world a better place. You and I are making this possible by continuing to support our school and its mission. In his most recent letter to the province, Br. Mark Hilton, Provincial of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of the United States, wrote the following: “I hope and pray, that in all the events of our lives, we will build on the one certain foundation we have, the love of God. And there, in that building not made of stone but of flesh, in our hearts where he dwells, in our actions where God lives, others too will find the same source of love and life and hope through us.” Excelsior! A Mount Father and Son Share Their Legacy by Being Inducted Into the William Blackstone Society Coaches Bill and Dave will be welcomed into the William Blackstone Society at the 30th Anniversary Dinner of the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, RI. Bill Belisle ’48 and Dave Belisle ’77, Mount’s father-son team, have been selected for induction into the William Blackstone Society, the signature society of the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council. Bob Billington, President of the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council said that this distinctive honor is bestowed upon very few selected individuals in the Blackstone Valley whose lives and accomplishments have brought great credit to themselves, the Blackstone Valley and the State of Rhode Island. Bill and Dave are pictured here during Bill’s 2014 Bill Belisle, the Academy’s induction to Mount’s Athletic Hall of Fame legendary hockey coach, has the Bill’s son, Dave, has been best record of high school wins coaching Mount hockey since in the nation. This iconic postgame speech is even being nationally featured in a Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes commercial. During an interview on ESPN after the game, the President and CEO of Little League International, Stephen Keener, said Dave was “one of the finest examples of a Little League coach I’ve ever seen.” Previous to the selection of the Belisles, only Ben Mondor ’42, the late owner of the famed Pawtucket Red Sox, had been selected from the sports field. Generations of Mounties
The Mount Legacy — For 91 years, Mount’s legacy has been rooted in our Catholic faith and in the Broth-
ers of the Sacred Heart’s mission to evangelize and educate our youth. For these nine decades, Mount’s mission to “challenge our students to be people of faith who use their talents and intellects to serve others” has spanned through several generations of Mount families, past and present. It is through them and the generations of Mounties to come, that the Mount legacy will forever live on.

The Prew Family
Karen Prew ’91 — “Greg and I didn’t actually date in high school. We had one date, but we were good friends and then we reconnected at the yearbook signing party. When we came back for that we exchanged information and kept in touch when I was away at school. Greg would come up to visit me and then that was it! I loved my experience at Mount. It wasn’t just about education — it was all encompassing. All of my friends today are my friends from high school. Those are my true friendships, and they developed here. Mount’s always been a second home. I’m just so happy to give that to my kids and to let them have that same experience. For Mount to instill those values that we work so hard as parents to give them and to have them be able to learn that and be reinforced at school is really important to us.” Gregory Prew ’91— “My experience at Mount was positive and I think it was a place that I needed to be at the time. It wasn’t really an option for me to come here. My parents made that decision for me, but in the long run I am really glad that they did because I felt like I got so much more out of the Mount experience than in the public school system I would have been placed into. There’s definitely that overlap of home, values, and 10
lessons being taught there. Having the same values, lessons and expectations instilled in them when they come to Mount I think is really important.” Allison ’18 — “When it was time for high school, I asked my parents to go to Mount so I could meet new people. I made a lot of friends. All of the teachers are really nice.” Julia ’21 — “I’m really excited to go to Mount. I’ve heard very good things about Mount. The teachers seem very nice and I’m excited to make a lot of new friends here.” Matt ’21 — “I was thrilled that my parents decided to send me here so I could get a better education and meet a lot of new people!” (Julia and Matt are going into 7th grade!)

Michael Corrente ’83 — “I think Mount prepared me for college and then the future. I wanted my kids to get a good well-rounded education as well as to be able to do extracurricular activities such as sports and dance. Mount offered all of that opportunity for them better than other schools because of the unique experience you have at Mount where you have the teacher counselor program that really looks after the children and ensures they have a successful and happy experience.” Michael Corrente ’13 — “I begged to come here. The Murray and Cannata Families Beth Cannata ’83 – “Mount is family to us. It’s home. Our parents decided to send us to Mount primarily for the education. They really didn’t know what else Mount was about at that time. It didn’t take long to figure out that it was about community, family, faith, love. We wanted our kids to experience the same thing. It was important for us to have our kids be together. As cousins, they are very very close in age – one year apart, all of them. So it’s just really important for them to experience and get a foundation of community and family. Family has always been really important to the Whites, Cannatas and Murrays.” Michelle Murray ’82 – “You can walk into any crowd anywhere and you can always pick out a Mountie. That speaks volumes to the Academy. The way children handle themselves, the way they treat others – you
just always know when you’re with a Mountie. I wanted that for all of our kids. Beth’s boys are like my kids and we wanted that for them. We’ve always been proud when people say ‘Where did you attend high school?’ We always hold our head up high and say ‘We’re Mounties.’ We wanted the same thing for our kids to be able to talk about where they came from. We have been very fortunate, Beth and myself. We have an older brother Jimmy who graduated from Mount in 1981. We all feel very successful and we still feel very connected to the Mount and we want our kids to be able to come back and have this community always feel like family to them. Sports, hockey for me, are very important and we’ve always been a hockey family. You’ll always see our family at the rink – forever.” Colin Cannata ’16 – “The reason why I wanted to come here was hockey. My mom and aunt went here but going to watch hockey games when I was little showed me the Mount experience with the fans and the colors and the pride. Once you get here and become a part of it, it’s pretty special.” Emma Murray ’15 — It was great going here with my cousins because I felt that I had someone I could talk to if I had any problems and it was just really great. The sense of community is honestly amazing. You can’t get a stronger community than the Mount community. It was really nice that my mom and my aunt came here. Ever since I was little, I said ‘I’m going to go to Mount because my mom went to Mount.’ When I got here I realized why she was so excited for me to come here because it’s just amazing.” 11

Every time we drove by the school, we would tell them they would be going to high school there! We both received great educations and enjoyed our time at the school. We put a value on education, want them to serve and want them to know their faith. We feel Mount is a great fit in all of those areas.”

Danielle (Drier) Sabourin ’91 —“There are so many reasons I wanted my kids to follow in my footsteps through the halls of Mount. My friends from Mount are still my friends to this day. We spend every Christmas Eve together and see each other regularly. We all make each other priorities— whether we live close or 3,000 miles away. It isn’t just my group of friends either—my brother’s best friends to this day are also his Mount friends. It speaks to the community of Mount that is always talked about but is hard to put into words. The best way I can is to tell my experiences. I always felt valued, respected and frankly, loved by the faculty. That feeling still sticks with me to this day. I knew that I was looked at as a valuable member of the Mount community because of who I was as a person. Who wouldn’t want their kids to have the same experience?” Mark Sabourin — “I want the best for my kids. Danielle said Mount is the best. Before Makenzie started at Mount we attended a fine arts day and a new parent event...it was then 12
I knew we made the right decision. Teachers and staff were approaching us, greeting Danielle with hugs and knowing her name and her family’s names — that was impressive to me. She had graduated 20 years before and they were greeting her like she had never left. It was like family. That was when I knew Mount is the place for my daughters. Makenzie has benefited both personally and academically and loves Mount. Every interaction I have had with faculty and staff has cemented my feelings about Mount — they are caring, compassionate, charitable and generous. Now I understand why Danielle and her friends look at their time there fondly and tell stories ALL THE TIME!” Makenzie ’18 — “I love Mount because everyone cares about you and takes time to get to know you as an individual. They have a good music program. Not everything is so cliquey, so people don’t feel left out. The guidance department is always there to solve any problem. The teachers all know my mom, who is a great person, so I get the pleasure of living up to her standards. It gives me something to work for. I’m looking forward to graduating, so I can walk the same walk that she did.” Keiley ’21 — I can’t wait to attend Mount because it’s a community that focuses on so much more than education. The staff is amazing and very caring—it’s so loving and accepting there. My sister started at Mount two years ago and we saw a big adjustment in her personality. I see the great people Makenzie is friends with and can’t wait to form great friendships like hers. It means loads to follow in the footsteps of my mother because, she has so many good memories and friends she is still close with today.”

6th Grade— Ready to Roll! By Joseph O’Neill Dir. of Admissions/Registrar/Teacher
Mount’s inaugural 6th grade is ready to begin with the fall semester. We are excited for this new group to join the MSC community. This first class of 6th graders is already at capacity and will be fully integrated into the Mount junior high. The faculty has been hard at work developing the curriculum
for the new 6th grade. In addition to the five core subjects (Religious Studies, English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies), the 6th graders will be enrolled in Wellness (Health/PE), have a choice of one elective (Art, Band, Introduction to French/Spanish), and participate in quarterly exploratory electives. These quarterly electives, part of both the 6th and 7th grade programs, offer the opportunity for students
Farewell to Our Retirees June 12th was the last day of school for faculty and staff and some junior high teachers came back to celebrate! Mrs. O’Byck retired this year and Mrs. Grace retired last year! Pictured are current and former junior high teachers of MSC!

to explore areas of interest and possible further study. Many of the topics originate in the fine arts (drama, chorus, drums, dance), others are more technically oriented (lego/robotics, web design), and some are for the more athletic (learn & burn, indoor activity trail, workout warriors, no “I” in team). As academic departments planned for the 6th grade, the rest of the junior high curriculum was also evaluated. Some departments were able to tweak their courses, while other departments totally overhauled the class offerings. A couple of departments are implementing changes across the board beginning this school year; most are phasing in changes or new courses. The goal of the junior high stays true to the mission of the school and of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Religious studies classes, service opportunities and community celebrations foster faith development. The academic program is rigorous and will prepare students for the college preparatory program at the high school level. And, we look to educate the whole child by offering programs and opportunities beyond academics through athletics and extra-curricular activities. 15

The Academy’s fourth Excelsior Hall of Fame class was inducted on Saturday, May 9th during the annual Excelsior Dinner thanking benefactors for their generosity throughout the year. Held in Mount’s Chapel Hall, the 2015 Excelsior Hall of Fame Class included the following: Tom V. Ward ’71; Gerald P. Ventre Sr. ’63; and Roger J. Cayer Sr. ’44. With the inductees surrounded by family and friends, the evening began with a welcome message from Edwin Burke, the Academy’s principal and then dinner followed by the presentation of the Hall of Fame which was conducted by Herve Richer Jr. ’74, president of Mount Saint Charles. Held every five years, Mount Saint Charles Academy’s Excelsior Hall of Fame was founded 15 years ago with the first induction ceremony being held on Sunday, April 30, 2000. The Excelsior Hall of Fame was established to recognize and celebrate outstanding graduates and friends of Mount Saint Charles who are making or have made significant differences with their achievements and contribu-
tions of service and loyalty to the Academy, the Church, or to the community. These individuals best exemplify the spirit of Mount Saint Charles Academy. For induction, nominations forms were submitted to the Excelsior Hall of Fame Nomination Committee. From here, a list of nominees was sent to the Selection Committee which then elected the inductees. Tom Ward ’74 of Cumberland, RI is a distinguished business man who has dedicated himself to service to his community. Tom began his career as a photojournalist for The Woonsocket Call in 1977. In 1985, he was named The Call’s first-ever Sunday Editor, and then became Special Sections Editor for the Fall River Herald News in 1990. Tom recognized a void in the newspaper marketplace and in 1996 began publishing a
free weekly paper that would serve as a true community paper – The Valley Breeze. Since its founding, The Breeze, a 2012 Distinguished New England Newspaper, has grown from a circulation of 10,000 to over 62,000 copies providing local news coverage for 11 communities. Tom has ensured that as the paper has grown, so, too, have its community endeavors, including a 10-year sponsorship of the R.I. State Spelling Bee, community clean-up days, and performances the Stadium Theatre for the Performing Arts. His editorial support of the Adopt-aFamily Christmas Giving Program is credited with encouraging financial support enabling the program to grow from assisting 30 families to assisting over 1,000 children each year. Tom currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Northern RI Chamber of Commerce and on the Advisory Board of the Rhode Island Catholic (diocesan newspaper). He is a member and past president of the Cumberland-Lincoln Rotary Club. He was recognized by the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council with the William Blackstone Award in 2006; by the NRI Chamber of Commerce with the Ben Mondor Award for Community Service in 2013; and he is a past winner of the Good Scout Award given by the Narragansett Council, Boy Scouts of America. In both his personal and business life, Tom has provided an unwavering commitment to building community. Gerry Ventre ’63 of North Smithfield, RI has dedicated his life to improving the lives and opportunities of some of our most vulnerable citizens — men, women, and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Gerry began volunteering in an evening

program for mentally challenged adults at the age of 15. He continued to volunteer through his college years. His early career was spent as a Special Education Teacher for the Woonsocket School Department. In 1972, Gerry was named Executive Director/CEO of the Woonsocket Chapter, Rhode Island Association for Retarded Children (RIARC). Gerry directed this program until his retirement in 2006. During his tenure, the association, now known as The ARC of Northern Rhode Island, opened 15 group homes and increased its budget from $200,000 to $15,000,000. The ARC now has a fleet of 50 vehicles providing transportation to over 300 developmentally disabled adults. A successful grant application in 1974 provided funding for the construction of a comprehensive habilitative services facility in Woonsocket. The Arc also purchased a building on Main St. in Woonsocket in which it founded a restaurant and gift shop as well as increased space for occupational and therapeutic services. Gerry was the first president of The Moran Foundation, whose mission is to “underwrite initiatives that benefit people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.” Gerry and his wife served as foster parents for three children with developmental disabilities, one of whom is their now adopted son, Matthew. In recognition of his unselfish service, Gerry has received the JayCee’s Outstanding Young Man Award, the Frank Berchman Award, The RIARC Professional of the Year
2 0 1 5
Award, the Frank Olean Memorial Award, the Friend of Self-Advocacy Award, and the Rhode Island Jefferson Award for Public Service. Gerry has humbly and faithfully lived out the mission statement of Mount Saint Charles Academy by using his gifts and talents to serve others. Roger Cayer Sr. ’44 (deceased) of Woonsocket, RI epitomized Mount Saint Charles’ ideals of service to God, country, and fellow man. As a member of the football and baseball teams at Mount, Roger learned the benefits of fostering teamwork as opposed to pursuing individual accomplishments. After graduation, Roger served as a Military Policeman in the US Navy, where he also earned the distinction of the Admiral’s Prize Fighter. Upon discharge from the Navy, Roger dedicated his life as a business owner and civic leader in the greater Woonsocket area. He founded Cayer Construction in 1958, a company which gained prominence throughout New England and western Florida. Among its many projects, Cayer Construction built the Woonsocket Police Station, two Woonsocket fire stations, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, the South Kingstown Town Hall, the Narragansett Free Library, and
the Dunedin (FL) City Hall. Roger served as President of the Woonsocket Lions Club and initiated Woonsocket’s annual Octoberfest celebration. He also served as president of the local chapter of Club Richelieu; was a member of the Freehill Council, Knights of Columbus; of Ciro’s Roundtable Businessmen’s Club; of the Board of Directors of the Greater Woonsocket Chamber of Commerce; and of the Slatersville Free Public Library. Few people are aware that Roger, each year at Thanksgiving and Christmas, delivered food baskets to 50 needy families, as well as toys and coats to children at Christmas. Upon Roger’s death, Drew Palmer, then Executive editor of The Woonsocket Call, wrote that, “Roger was a builder every day of his life; when not building buildings, he was building relationships. The City of Woonsocket is much better for counting Roger among her sons.” Roger’s son (Roger Cayer Jr. ’66) accepted the award on his behalf. The following is a list of past Excelsior Hall of Fame inductees: Brother Adelard Beaudet, SC; Roger N. Begin ’71; Jacques E. Dubois ’37; Jeraldine S. Ferry; Jean A. Guay, M.D. ’48; Ben Mondor ’42; Brother Michael Spenard, SC; Dr. Francis L. Lawrence ’55; Paul Marchand ’59; H. Julian Mitchell; John Noonan ’38’; Eugene Peloquin ’50; Robert Ayotte ’55; Donald Bibeault, PhD ’59; Brother Robert R. Croteau, SC; Brother Robert Lavoie, SC ’52; and Rene Tellier ’48.

C L A S S Raymond A. Pepin, PhD, Class of 1962—It is with deep sadness that we inform the MSC community that Ray passed away on February 21, 2015 in The Villages, Florida. His academic career spanned 40 years at Stonehill College in North Easton, MA. He was a published scholar, chaired the Economic Department, was the director of Academic Computing, and was the director of the Academic Computer Center. He contributed significantly to the development of computer studies at Stonehill. He was also a great mentor to many students and they often kept in touch with him over the years. Ray is survived by his wife Noella, sons Christopher, Jonathan, and Thomas, and his brother Joe. Thank you to Ray’s wife Noella for submitting this information. Nicole (Pirrello) Cameron, Class of 1998—Nicole married her
husband, Peter Cameron on May 25, 2013. On August 31, 2014 they welcomed with love their son, Beckett. Nicole is a sonographer at Milford Regional Medical Center and lives in Uxbridge, MA with her family. Ron Lavoie, Class of 1965—Ron currently lives in Illinois and works as an administrative assistant at the at the Community Congregational Church. Having fond memories of his time in Mount’s band, Ron recently came back to the Academy to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his graduation from MSC! Raymond Hickey, Class of 1967—It is with great sympathy that we inform the MSC community that Raymond passed away in April 2015. N O T E S “To the day he passed, he talked about Mount all the time. His class ring was one of his most prized possessions and it was with amazing honor that my grandfather passed it on to me.” Jeffrey G. Marsocci, Class of 1988—Late last year, Jeff earned his Certified Medicaid Planner™ designation from the Certified Medicaid Planning
Governing Board™. The CMP designation is granted based upon education and experience requirements, showing proficiency in
Medicaid Planning through a thorough examination, and committing to adhere to the highest professional standards. This fits well with Jeff’s law practice as more of his clients or their parents need nursing home care and don’t want to bankrupt the family to pay for it. “The exam itself was brutal,” Jeff said. “While the material on Medicaid concepts was tough enough, they had some questions requiring long division, and all I was allowed to use was 2 pieces of scratch paper and 2 pencils. I haven’t had to do long division without a calculator since 10th grade. I remember thinking at the time, ’Geez, even Mr. Phaneuf let us use calculators!’ “Jeff also invites fellow Mounties to check out his office’s website atwww. livingtrustlawfirm.com.
