pring is upon us and the flowers on campus are blooming. Alleluia! I am beginning to reflect that there exists no slow period in a schools calendar anymore. The energy and enthusiasm of the mission and ministry abounds.

We are very proud to have recently been named the Advanced Placement Winner in Math & Science for the state of R.I., sponsored by the Siemens Foundation. Mount is one of the 50 high schools nationally to be recognized as a leading school in AP participation and performance in the math and science disciplines. Siemens proclaims that “high schools like yours represent the best of American education.” A special congratulations to Mrs. Carol Moreau (AP Calculus), Mrs. Janice Ferry (AP Environmental Science), Ms. Susan Tessier (AP Coordinator), Mr. Henry Ferry (AP Chemistry), and Mr. Roland Lavallee (AP Biology). Mount’s reputation in the performance arts continues to flourish. The month of March saw the productions of Jr. High Drama, Jr. High Spring Concert, Senior High Drama, Sr. High Spring Concert, as well as the Art Exhibit and dedication of the Art Gallery. During spring break, 182 students from Senior Band, Chorus, and Jazz Band went to Ireland for their 8-day concert tour of Ireland, hosted by families of the FCJ Secondary School in Bunclody, Ireland. Their return has them ener-

getically performing at two major May events: the annual Pops Concert and the Choral Cabaret. Winter sports proved to be a very strong season, especially for our basketball program which had all six teams enter their playoffs. J.V. Girls’ Basketball team is State Champs, with an undefeated season, and our Jr. High Boys’ BB team lost in the finals. Our strong boys’ and girls’ swim teams both won this year’s Sportsmanship Award; our Cheerleading team won the State Championship and went on to compete in the Nationals in Washington DC. And, our boys’ basketball team received the state’s sportsmanship award. The Winter Sports season wrapped up as the Division One Hockey finals capped the end of March with a disappointing 1-0 loss to Bishop Hendricken in the finals at the Providence College Arena. Hockey continues to be the greatest sports drama of the year for Mount. The end-ofseason play was truly outstanding, having given Bishop Hendricken its first loss in two years in the first game of the finals 3-game series. With a great group of young hockey players in the wings, there is profound hope for a return to the championship series for many years in the future. Our efforts at building sportsmanship surfaces again this spring, Mount baseball receiving its Sportmanship Award, our fourth this year.

Our registration of new students and the re-registration process is nearing completion with the promise of a school filled to capacity for this coming fall. We also will be able to provide Financial Aid to over 160 students with the average aid package nearing $4,000. These efforts are made possible partly through the numerous contributions to our Endowment Trust for Financial Aid. We are very grateful to our benefactors who are making the reconstruction of the third floor of our West Wing Project, which includes the construction of a new Technology Center and our Academic Learning Center a reality. If you have not considered a gift or a pledge to the Academy for this worthwhile construction project yet, please do it today. Reconstruction begins June 13th. With sincere wishes for a joy filled spring.

he prevailing culture of sports today often stands in direct juxtaposition to the values we seek to impart through our work here at Mount. The “win at all costs” attitude that finds its way into the minds of players and coaches at the professional level and trickles down to even the lowest levels of youth sports ignores many of the precepts of respect and self-discipline which we strive to instill in the young men and women in our care.

T

I am proud to say, however, that Mount’s athletes and coaches are different.Through the untiring efforts of Mr. Richard Lawrence, our Athletic Director, and now also our Associate Athletic Director, Mr. Chris Keyes, we can boast of an athletic program that has been recognized time and again for the respect, sportsmanship, and fair play displayed by players and coaches in all of our sports and at all levels of competition. It is especially pleasing to receive notes, e-mails, or phone calls from opposing coaches, opposing fans and parents, and league officials commending the attitude and deportment of our players and coaches. And it is a source of great pride — perhaps even exceeding a State Championship — when one of our teams is selected by the

Rhode Island Interscholastic League officials to receive the Sportsmanship Award in its particular sport. This happened not once, but twice, this past winter season when our Varsity Boys Basketball Team and our Varsity Boys and Girls Swim Teams were selected to receive the award in their respective sports. This continues a trend over the past few years wherein our baseball team, our hockey team, our boys soccer team, and our girls tennis team, among others, have all been named as winners of the league Sportsmanship Award. And most recently, our Varsity Baseball Team was chosen once again this spring as the recipient of this year’s Sportsmanship Award for baseball. Officials select only one team for each sport in each season! We are very proud of our athletes and our coaches, not solely because they are successful, but because people across the state recognize Mount’s athletes for practicing the precepts of “honorable competition:” 1. respect the game; 2. play by the rules, and within the spirit of the rules; 3. play your best; 4. don’t hit back, play harder; 5. employ competitive self-restraint. Being counter-cultural is not easy. But being counter-cultural is the only way by which one

can change a culture. The culture of sports does not always exhibit the concept of honorable competition, but that doesn’t mean that teams and athletes can only achieve success by ignoring this concept. Mount’s teams, we believe, are an example to coaches and athletes everywhere that sports can be fun and that you can play and be successful while supporting the precepts of honorable competition. More than anything else, though, our athletes show us every day that being a Christian and being an athlete do not have to be separate entities. We are extremely proud of the success of our athletic program, but prouder still of the fact that Mount’s teams are consistently recognized across the state for being examples of sportsmanship and honorable competition. Mount’s motto – “Excelsior!” – lives on!

Coach Belisle Honored for 800th Win at Mount Interview by Gail R. Bryson Where were you born? I was born on September 29, 1929 in Manville to French Canadian immigrants. My doctor told my mother that I wouldn’t make it…but I did! What did you like to do when you were a child? Play hockey and play baseball. When you were a boy what did you want to do when you grew up? I wanted to play hockey. What was your first connection to Mount Saint Charles? My closest friend from Manville was John St. Sauveur ’51. As young boys, we used to walk to Mount and play hockey on an outdoor rink located where the rink now stands. Mount used to have two outdoor rinks at the time…one on the upper field and one on the lower field. Why did you attend Mount? I attended St. James School in Manville. After finishing the eighth grade I wanted to go to a school in St. Joliet, Canada because of hockey. My parents wouldn’t allow that so I went to Mount where I was an honor roll student. What was the tuition when you were at Mount? Since Lincoln did not have a high school at the time, I attended Mount at no cost. Did you play sports at Mount? I played hockey. (At Mount Bill played Junior Varsity and then Varsity Hockey. Mount won the State Championship in 1947. In 1947-48, Bill’s senior year, Mount was no longer allowed to include Canadians on the team, and therefore pulled out of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League for one year. The “Flying Frenchmen” went on to play college teams for that season.)

Did you play hockey after Mount? I played for the Worcester Warriors which was in a pro league, but the Warriors were not a pro team. We used to get $10.00 per game. I also played three years for the Springfield Indians, a minor professional hockey franchise, based in West Springfield, Massachusetts.

L E G E N D

What are you most proud of? I’m proud of my family; wife Yvette, and sons Billy, John, David and Peter. Do you cook? No, I can’t even turn on the microwave. Do you like music? I like “Big Band Music.” I like to dance. My sister Fern taught me to dance in our parlor when I was young. I taught Yvette. We used to go dancing at Joyland and the King Philip Ballroom. What do you do to relax? I like to putter around my workshop.

What did you do before you became the Arena Manager? I was Staff Sergeant in the Army, during the Korean War. I returned to Rhode Island and worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for MAC Construction and J. H. Lynch and Sons. In 1974, I became manager of the Brother Adelard Arena. When did you start coaching? In 1954, I coached the Manville CYO junior high baseball team which won the Diocesan State and New England Championships. Later, I was involved with the first Little League Farm Team in Manville. (In 1975 Br. Paul Demers, Principal offered Bill the job as varsity hockey coach. The team was polled — Bill got every vote except two: sons John ’76 and David ’77 voted “NO.” They knew how hard they would have to work if their dad took over the program.) How did you meet your wife? I met Yvette (Beaudoin) when I worked for her dad. He owned Beaudoin’s Catering and had a restaurant in Manville. When and where were you married? St. James Church in Manville in 1953 where we both were parishioners. I was an altar boy when I was young and I still serve at Mass today. I go to church every day. I almost died in 1983. I got knocked down during a hockey practice and suffered a severe head injury. I promised God that I would go to church every day if I got better.

Varsity Hockey Coach Bill Belisle ’48 celebrated his 800th career win earlier this year. He is pictured with Br. Robert Croteau, SC, President, Assistant Coach Dave Belisle ’77 and members of his 2006-2007 hockey team: Assistant Captain, Cory Canavan ’07, Assistant Captain John Guay ’08, and Captain Jeffrey Lace ’07.

•Coach Belisle’s 32 year overall record (including playoffs & exhibition games) is 806 -129-32 •83 players achieved “1st Team All State” honors from the Providence Journal. •58 players received Scholarships to Division One Colleges and Universities. •19 Players have been selected in the “Pro-Draft” system of the NHL •10 Players have signed professional contracts in the NHL: Brian Lawton (1983 NHL #1 pick), Edward Lee, Paul Guay, Mathieu Schneider, David Capuano, Keith Carney, Garth Snow, Bryan Berard (1995 NHL #1 pick), Brian Boucher and Jeffrey Jillson.

Legislation Allows Tax-free Distributions from Your IRA to a Qualified Charity A Window of Opportunity in 2007 On August 17, 2006, President Bush signed into law the Pension Protection Act of 2006 (“PPA 2006”).The legislation sets forth new rules and opportu-

nities for those who donate to charity. Primarily, if you are age 70 or older, you may now transfer up to $100,000 in 2007 tax-free from your IRA to a qualified public charity. If your spouse is also age 70 or older, he or she may make a qualified distribution from his or her IRA, effectively allowing married couples to move up to $400,000 tax-free from their IRAs by the end of 2007. The tax-free rollover of qualified charitable distributions can be particularly attractive for donors who need to take required minimum distributions from their IRAs. Under

10

the new law, you can satisfy your required minimum distributions of up to $100,000 by using these funds to make a tax-free qualified donation to charity. However, you cannot send the funds directly to the charity. You must arrange with your financial institution to send these distributions directly to your charity for you. For more information about how you can take advantage of the new IRArollover-to-charities donation initiative and whether this technique has advantages for you, contact your tax and financial advisors as well as the charity to which you want to donate.

Two Generations of Morin Mounties by Richard Lawrence t was more than 30 years ago when a scrawny little guy came out on to the tennis court for a try out. He called himself Michael Morin.

Michael was the first of the Morin siblings that I met. One by one they followed him to Mount and one by one I got to know them all.Though they walked in the shadow of his athletic and intellectual excellence, they all managed to carve a niche of their own in school Front Row L/R: Christopher ’98, Justin ’07, Alexander Bonin ’11 & history.
