t has been a whirlwind summer as we completed the first part of the West Wing Project. We began the demolition of the third floor of the West Wing area on June 13th and 69 days later, we received our official certificate of occupancy for our new computer technology center, our new academic learning center, a faculty computer lab, and two completely remodeled classrooms. The next day, on August 22nd, our students began a new academic year, enthusiastic and excited about our new technologically advanced learning space. As I entered the new computer classroom a junior by whispered to me, “Brother, this space is
REALLY NICE! Thanks so much for making this happen!”
Of particular note was the dedication of our Building and

today. While there are many things I could discuss with you today, I think the most important thing to discuss is community.
opportunity to give back to our school – a school that has given so much to us.
sually this space is given to me to share with you thoughts and reflections on life at Mount today. And I enjoy being able to give you a glimpse of what’s happening in the classrooms and hallways that we all shared over the years. This month, I have chosen to share with you someone else’s words because I find that they are testament to all that is good about Mount and to what makes Mount the unique school that it is. The words are those of David Roderick, chemistry teacher, swim coach, track coach, and sergeant in the U.S. Army. Currently, Dave is serving his second tour in Iraq and recently helped kick off our annual walk-a-thon by addressing our high school students via an internet link. You could have heard a pin drop as Dave addressed nearly 700 students in the Mount gym. His address follows: “Good morning Mt. St. Charles. It is an honor to speak with you
We are so thrilled that we were able to complete another phase of the development of our building, all in better service to our students and their families. This again has been possible through the dedication of board and committee members, academic departments and administrators, students involved in the Walkathon, and the numerous donors who believed in Mount and committed themselves to make this $1,400,000 improvement a reality.
In the six years since 9/11, I have spent almost half of that time away from the ones I love most – my wife Janet, my children Justin and Allie, and my second family, the Mount community. It has not always been easy, but whether I have been walking the vast hallways of the Pentagon or the sands of Iraq, thoughts of you have always been with me. The thing about our school of which I am most proud is our sense of community and how we as a school are always willing to reach out to others – whether they have been across the city or across the globe. It is that sense of community that I cherish most. In that spirit, I would like you to really think about what walk-athon means. Walk-a-thon is not just a day to take off from school and stroll the streets of Woonsocket. Walk-a-thon is an
Grounds Manager Br. Roland Champagne SC and Technology Director Brenda Hammerschmidt, who worked at least six days per week, with no time off, to make sure that we would be ready for the opening of school. We pray that they be blessed and that all the benefactors who are partners in our ministry that made this possible rejoice in this newest success story. Sincerely yours,
Mr. Demers has told me that our goal is $125,000, but I think we can do so much better that that. So when you’re thinking about getting sponsors, think about the friendships, the laughter, the community that is Mount and how walk-a-thon provides you with an opportunity to give back to Mount. Never forget what a special place Mount is and how fortunate we are to have it. Let’s do all that we can to improve it. May God bless you and keep you until we meet again.” The Mount spirit is alive and well – even in the sands of Iraq. Excelsior !!

STEPHEN DUMAINE
JOHN GILLOOLY
Music Director Marc Blanchette ‘76 and his family had a chance to lunch with Stephen Dumaine ‘91 in Washington DC this summer. It was prior to Steve’s Fourth of July performance with the National Symphony Orchestra on the National Mall.
John Gillooly, Providence Journal sportswriter and author of the book, PRIDE ON THE MOUNT, More Than A Game, spoke to Richard Lawrence’s combined AP English classes this September. The reason he was invited was not because of his book, but because Richard’s classes were required to read the book, Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World by Tracy Kidder. John is quite familiar with Dr. Paul Farmer since his daughter Melissa, presently the Executive Director of THE RWANDA PROJECT for Partners in Health, was previously Paul Farmer’s Executive Secretary. Melissa Gillooly currently spends most of her time in Rwanda.
TARYN LAPIERRE Taryn Lapierre graduated in June after completing four years at Mount.Taryn played for the Mount girl’s hockey team serving as Assistant Captain in her junior year and Captain in her senior year. As a player she made All-Division and All-State all four years of her high school career and was voted MVP for the Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL) play-offs in 2006 and 2007.Taryn is the all time record holder for RIIL schoolgirl hockey in goals, assists, and total points. Taryn is a freshman at Sacred Heart University where she will major in science and play hockey at the Division I level as a scholarship player. We wish her the best in her future and in bringing Mount Pride to Sacred Heart.
Stephen Dumaine and Marc Blanchette
According to the National Symphony web site; “Stephen Dumaine is a shining example that persistence pays. Each major orchestra employs just one tuba player full-time, making the openings few and far between. Persevering against those who told him he couldn’t make a living as a tuba player, a year in which he had no professional musical employment (practicing on his own throughout that time), and 21 auditions, he has become the principal tuba of the National Symphony Orchestra.” Read more about Steve and the National Symphony at: www.kennedycenter.org

Veteran, Athlete, and Mentor, this Mount Alum is Able We recently reconnected with Michael Guilbault ‘77 for the first time in many years at
his 30th class reunion, and we were so impressed. Mike is an Air Force Veteran, Northeastern University graduate, Engineer and a quadriplegic as a result of an automobile accident in 1995. Mike is involved with all kinds of competitive sports and spends a lot of time mentoring new spinal cord injury victims. He makes quite an impact on everyone who comes into
contact with him. As quoted by Peter Moore, one of Mike’s protégés, “Mike was one of the first people in a wheelchair to encourage me during physical therapy. To try to drive me harder by showing me what he’s capable of as a quadriplegic. ‘I’ve always been in quaddenial!’ Mike says with a twinkle. ‘When I was in the hospital all they were telling me was I can’t do this and I can’t do that. Ever since then I’ve been proving them wrong on all counts, one thing at a time.’ ” Mike was a competitor and medal winner in the 2007 National Veterans Wheelchair Games, medaling in the following events: air guns (Bronze), swimming (Gold), softball (Bronze), “I have been coming to the Wheelchair Games since 1998,” said Guilbault. “The Games are rehabilitation through recreation. Competing is challenging and keeps me fit. It is fun and I enjoy seeing the peer mentoring and what others can do.”
New England was built. The team is made up of players from RI, MA, and NH ranging from 24-63 years old with disabilities such as Polio, Spinal Cord Injury, Amputee, and Spina Bifida. After two consecutive years of winning the National Wheelchair Softball Tournament Division II Championship the team made it into the Division I bracket for the first time in their history by beating the Cicero Midwest Flyers from Illinois. How to Smartly Donate Assets During Your Lifetime onating financial resources can be more complicated than just writing a check. If you want to engage in lifetime gifting of assets, you should be aware of certain rules. For instance, in 2007, the maximum annual gift tax exclusion amount is $12,000 per person while the lifetime federal gift tax exclusion amount is currently $1 million, and will remain at that level through 2009.

A Charitable Remainder Trust is a tax-exempt way to distribute income from the trust to beneficiaries for a period of time after which remaining assets are distributed to charities of your choice. You determine the time frame of the trust—it can last a lifetime or for a fixed term of up to 20 years—as well as the amount of annual payouts. 14
Charitable Lead Trusts are funded with assets that are, preferably, expected to appreciate. The charity of your choice receives a fixed annual payout from the trust, with the remainder going to your family members at the end of the charity’s payout term. A Grantor Retained Annuity Trust allows you to pass assets you believe will appreciate in value to family members at discounted levels. You contribute assets to a trust and receive a fixed annuity payment stream for a specified period of years. At the end of the trust term, the remaining assets and their appreciation (if any) are distributed to your beneficiaries. You could use life insurance to help replace your estate and gift tax liabilities. Life insurance often provides a substantial benefit for relatively small costs. A life insurance policy may be used by itself to increase the size of your estate, or it may be used for cost-effectively paying estate taxes. A Limited Liability Company or Family Limited Partnership may help reduce the size of your estate for transfer-tax purposes. The LLC or FLP is made up
of managing or voting interests and nonvoting interests, and you could gift the nonvoting interests to your children and grandchildren . A Dynasty Trust could allow you to establish a source of funds for multiple generations. Here’s how it generally works: You would fund the trust with an amount up to your and your spouse’s lifetime gift tax exclusions. The trust assets, including any growth, will remain free of federal transfer taxes (i.e., estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer taxes) for as long as they remain in the trust. Discuss your estate planning objectives and concerns with your Financial Advisor and your tax and legal advisors. Together, you can develop an estate plan that best addresses your financial and family situations.
