Dearest Friends,
I
t is with a great sense of humility and honor that I have accepted to serve as the major superior of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of the New England Province. I humbly accepted to be Provincial as animator and administrator of the Brothers and of our ministries in New England and England for the next four years. Having been head of Mount, first as Principal from 1986 to 1991 and then its first President, I have grown in appreciation of the value of leadership amidst dedicated men and women, committed to the education of the young people entrusted to our care. It is an honor to continue my efforts in a comprehensive way to ensure the life and mission of our founders Rev. Andre Coindre and Br. Polycarp remains active at Mount. The French community of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, founded in Lyon, France, in 1821, responded in its missionary spirit to the people of the South, to come to the “new world” to open schools for the French communities along the Mississippi Valley. By the close of the 19th Century, a vast number of Canadians were migrating to the mill cities and towns of New England, and the Brothers embraced the dream of assisting these immigrant families, educating their children, preserving their language and enlivening their Catholic faith.

The newly founded American Province of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart quickly expanded in New England, opening parish schools in Manchester, NH in 1889, in Nashua, NH in 1891, Haverhill, MA in 1894 and “Le Petit College” at Precious Blood Parish, Woonsocket, RI in 1898.These schools not only nourished the faith and culture of the French Canadian communities but enabled families to educate their children to the 9th grade and beyond. Throughout the 20th century the Brothers continued to expand Catholic education in New England. In 1909, the Brothers began their first junior-senior high school, Sacred Heart Academy in Central Falls, RI and in 1924, Mount Saint Charles Academy. The school was soon recognized as an excellent seat of learning and increasing enrollment and expansion marked the ensuing years.Young men were now being afforded an opportunity to attain a high school diploma and many became the first in their family to go on to college. In the late 60’s, due to the religious vocation crisis and the deterioration of buildings, many parish schools merged and some were forced to close their doors. In 1972, the leaders of Mount Saint Charles made the courageous decision to expand the school into a co-educational institution. During the ensuing decades, the school continued to flourish. Mount achieved
accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and was twice recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. The Brothers of the Sacred Heart continue to maintain a strong presence, carrying on the dreams of their founders. In partnership with lay educators, they prepare students to meet the challenges of the new millennium. Our students are guided by the school’s mission to develop their gifts and talents for the betterment of themselves and in service to society. As I end this academic year as President of the Academy, I have accepted to serve as Mount’s next Chairman of the Board of Trustees. I look forward with anticipation to Mount’s bright future of educating the next generation of young people “who believe in God’s love, who live God’s Love, and who spread the love of God” among themselves, their families and the larger community for the betterment of the world. God bless us all,
Br. Robert R. Croteau, SC President

Service. Service. Service. enjoyable) six months, and then went to Cuba for a year to study religion and social change in the Latin American context. Students at Mount, in religion classes alone, spend over 31,424 hours per school year helping the elderly, tutoring, coaching, volunteering, cooking, cleaning, serving, shoveling, walking dogs, picking up trash, and the list goes on. How did we get that number? Well, there are 268 students in the 7th and 8th grades at Mount and 724 students in the high school. The junior high students are required to offer a minimum of 5 hours of service per quarter for a total of 20 hours per year and the high school students a minimum of 6 hours of service per quarter for a total of 24 hours per year.
ing, toy, and book drives. Many Mounties have found an opportunity to carry this love of service throughout their lives. In this issue of MOUNT we are highlighting just a few of their stories.
Anthony Vinciguerra Anthony graduated from Mount St. Charles in 1992 – but the values and inspiration he found at MSC have stayed with him as he has carved out his life’s unique path.
20 hours x 268 students = 5,360 hours 36 hours x 724 students = 26,064 hours For a total of = 31, 424 hours
After graduating from Mount, Anthony went on to study English and Religious Studies at the College of the Holy Cross. While at Holy Cross he participated in various service trips, both locally (in Worcester, MA) and in rural Appalachia. He spent his junior year studying in Italy and traveling in Eastern Europe, while also participating in a formative intercultural dialogue experience with the extreme poor in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
And this is just the beginning. Most of our students also perform additional hours through their participation in the National Honor Society, Student Administrative Council, Best Buddies, Music Ministry, Peer Ministry, Service Opportunity Depot, and school sponsored food, cloth-

After his time in Cuba Anthony moved on to study Religion and Society at the Graduate Theological Union (in Berkeley, CA). While in graduate school, he lived and worked at the Oakland Catholic Worker – a half-way house and community center for Central American refugees in inner-city Oakland. Anthony left Oakland, and eventually found his way to Miami, FL, where he now lives. He spent one year working with the South Florida Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice (organizing a worker-rights initiative for lowincome immigrant workers), as well as a year with the Archdiocese of Miami’s Office of Social Advocacy.

Anthony currently teaches in the Religious Studies department at St. Thomas University (the Archdiocesan university for Miami, FL), and directs their Center for Justice and Peace. His work at the Center focuses on engaging the students, faculty and staff of the university in social justice issues on several levels: Locally he coordinates the university’s

participation in community organizing efforts to curb violence and poverty in the university’s immediate area; Regionally he connects students and faculty with farm worker organizations fighting for better labor standards in the fields of Central Florida; and Internationally Anthony’s work engages faculty and students in collaborative development projects in Miami’s sisterdiocese of Port-de-Paix, Haiti. In light of the political turmoil, food crises, and recent hurricanes in Haiti the international component of his work has taken on a renewed emphasis. In partnership with the Archdiocese of Miami, Anthony leads a team of faculty and students at the university who are working on three long-term, social, economic and environmental development projects in what is the poorest region of the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The three projects are: 1) Kafe Lavi/Coffee of Life; 2) Women’s Fair-Trade Artisan Products; 3)Solar Energy/Solar Bakery Projects

Though he’s traveled the world, and studied at a number of universities, Anthony cites his time in the MSC Music program (with Marc Blanchette) and his AP English class as two of his most formational experiences. One of his favorite Mount stories, however, comes from a senior-year, homeroom morning with Mr. Richard Lawrence. It was the day of a big tennis match against Barrington, and Anthony and the other tennis team members were excited. Amid the chatter, Anthony ran up to up to Mr. Lawrence, who was then the varsity tennis coach, and was characteristically busy correcting papers. “Hey Mr. Lawrence!” he asked. “Are you psyched for the match today?!” Mr. Lawrence stopped his work. He paused. Then he slowly looked up from his desk, and answered deliberately: “Vinciguerra. I’m psyched when I brush my teeth.” Anthony tries to live with that same passion every day.

Chickering Family written by John Chickering Getting involved and helping others has been part of our DNA for a long time, and probably explains why Mount was such a natural choice for us. One of my first deliberate efforts at organized volunteering began 25+ years ago when I started visiting residents at a local nursing home in Maryland. During our time here in Boston, the volunteering has been a family passion. We’ve worked with several volunteer organizations in the Greater Boston area. The work has ranged from painting, to visiting at a hospital, to dressing up as oversized characters in support of Reading is Fundamental. I’ve led 4 trips to Pearlington, MS with the United Methodist Church’s Volunteers in Mission organization. The trips have been rewarding all the way around. One funny story comes out of Monica’s senior year when one of her teachers said something to the effect of “... well it’s not like any of you have gotten on an airplane and flown to New Orleans...” I can’t remember her exact reply, but I Volunteering is a family affair for John, Margaret, Jennifer ‘05 & Monica Chickering ‘08.

believe Monica raised her hand and pointed out that she’d been several times. Both Jennifer and Monica are actively pursing community service studies at Hood College in Frederick, MD. Jennifer is running the Best Buddies program there. Hood’s Best Buddies program is nearly the size of the University of Maryland’s despite the fact that the University has nearly ten times the population of Hood. I’m currently planning our next trip to Mississippi for March 7th - 14th. I welcome the support of anyone in the Mount community who is interested in going with us. If you would have asked me why I do it several years ago, I’d probably say something to the effect of “I can’t not get involved.” I’ve grown spiritually over the last couple of years and now know that I’m simply following God’s call.

Conference, respond to Christ’s invitation to build the kingdom. We hold sacred the trust established between the donors and the mission they choose to support. Inspired by the Gospel call to stewardship, we serve the Church by respecting the hallowed ground on which donors and the mission meet. As trustees of what literally belongs to God, we strive for the highest ethical standards. As disciples called to serve all of God’s people, we are accountable and responsible to religious authority, to donors and to the mission. We believe, above all else, that the Gospel values of human dignity and worth need generous space to flourish and grow.”

Jeffrey Marquis – Student Pilot I was a six-year-old boy who was very nervous to be at one of New England’s busiest airports: Boston Logan International Airport (KBOS). This flight was going to be interesting; it was a six-hour flight direct to Lisbon, Portugal on a SATA International Airbus A310.The effect of Newton’s First Law of Motion (inertia) was amazing. Furthermore, with a beautiful landing on runway 03 in Lisbon (LPPT), I knew from that point onward that I wanted to become a professional pilot. After a few years of begging my parents,
they took me down to North Central to sign up for flying lessons under one condition: I would have to help them pay for it as this is a very expensive hobby. I knew that I had to start training in smaller planes and that is why I started at Skylanes, located at North Central State Airport, “the biggest little airport in Rhode Island.” I currently have over 30 hours and I am nearly done with all the necessary training but still have 10.4 hours

Memories of the 1938 Hurricane Memories of the 1938 hurricane and how it affected me and others living at “The Mount” on that fatal day.
by John C. McAuliffe ‘41 I arrived at Mount with my younger brother Francis in September, 1938; I as a sophomore and Francis an 8th grade pupil. The previous year we were students at the Sacred Heart Brothers’ school in Sharon, MA which is now closed. We were assigned to the 2nd Section under the supervision of Brother Michael. On the eve of the Hurricane we were playing on the old playground used by both the 1st and 2nd Sections. It was also the school’s baseball field, practice football field, and was used as an outside ice rink which was built and maintained by Bro. Michael and his ‘boys’ every winter for use by the boarding students. I was sitting in the old baseball stands on the 3rd baseline talking with friends. The wind was blowing up strong and Brother Michael called “All in!” from the playground.Thinking back, I imagine he had heard over the radio of the impending storm and winds. We no sooner got out of the stands when a gust of wind blew over the upper 8 rows of benches. While running for the 2nd section Hall, one of the kids got swept off his feet and
into the air by the gusts of winds. As we studied in the Study Hall that evening, the winds blew harder and Grandstands in the MSC ball field as they stood before being destroyed by the hurricane. harder. That his Mountie boarding students. night on the very top floor We all survived the “38 (4th floor dormitory) the venHurricane”.The statistics are tilators rattled and rattled all awesome, considering we had through the night. Giving Back to Your Alma Mater ount Saint Charles was a place to learn and a time to grow. As the years pass, it becomes easier to realize what those years provided us and it’s only natural to want to return the favor. Alumni donations are vital to Mount and a great way to give back to the community. There are many ways we can give back to the school that did so much to shape us. From creating scholarships to making donations to the general fund, supporting Mount financially can be a particularly rewarding component of your philanthropic activities. Some simple planning can maximize the benefits for everyone.
M
The Power of Individual Giving Historically, gifts from individual alumni provide the bulk of charitable support. In 2006, charitable contributions to educational institutions in the U.S. reached $28 billion -over half of which came directly from alumni and other individuals, according to a recent Council for Aid to Education report (www.cae.org). Although major gifts, like Nike founder Philip Knight’s $105 million pledge in 2006 to Stanford’s business school, receive a lot of exposure and press coverage, the combined value of smaller gifts from an army of contributors funds a far greater portion of educa22
tion. Donations provide an estimated 20% of annual education inflows. Without individual gifts, it would be impossible for schools, such as Mount, to sponsor a full range of activities. The Smart Way to Give Individual gifts can be made in many forms. Unfortunately, donors often overlook the importance of structuring their gifts to maximum advantage. Eighty-five percent of donors give cash, often in direct response to pledge drives. However, giving other assets may hold significant advantages for you and Mount. For example, donating appreciated stock, rather than selling the shares and writing a check, allows you to give more and can help trim your tax obligations. For instance: If you sell stock that has appreciated by $100,000 and then donate the cash from the sale, you would pay at least $15,000 capital gains tax and be able to deduct only the after-tax amount you contributed. However, if you give the stock directly, you can deduct the full market value without paying gains tax. Plus, Mount receives a larger donation. The same holds true for donations of other appreciated assets as long as you meet the IRS’s requirement for a rigorous professional evaluation of the gift’s market value. However, artists may find it preferable to sell their work
and then give a cash donation. That’s because artists can only deduct the cost of the materials used and not what the works would fetch if sold. The Value of Trusts Different types of trusts can also play an important role in generous and efficient gifting. A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) provides a payment stream for the donor’s or beneficiary’s lifetime with the balance of the assets going to Mount when the trust expires. For instance, if you establish a CRT to benefit Mount and fund it with appreciated securities, capital gains are deferred and your income tax obligation lessened. You can choose to set a term for the trust of up to 20 years or for your lifetime. The trust will then make payments to you. When the trust terminates, the remaining principal goes to Mount. Similarly, a Charitable Lead Trust (CLT) provides Mount income for the slated number of years, after which the remaining assets pass to the donor’s beneficiary. These trusts are ideal vehicles for donating highly appreciated assets valued at $250,000 or more. Lastly, a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) makes it possible for you to receive an annuity with the balance paid to Mount upon death. With a Christopher J.
