Welcome Back Knights!

Now that we've settled nicely into the spring semester the Office of Security and Safety would like to wish you a safe and exciting semester filled with new opportunities and continued academic success! Although, the groundhog didn't see his shadow and the weather has been relatively mild so far. Let's remember there's still time for winter weather to head our way before the spring flowers begin to bloom. With that in mind, here are a few winter weather safety tips as well as other tips to ensure that everyone has a safe semester. Winter Driving Tips

Vehicle Preparation

• Watch for black ice. • Make sure you have at least a half a tank of gas in • Give yourself plenty of distance between you and

other vehicles. • Reduce your speed – SLOW DOWN! • Stay alert – watch your surroundings. • Maintain control – don't panic. • When sitting in an idling vehicle make sure the exhaust pipe is clear of snow and ice or other obstructions. • Don't stop when driving uphill (if you can avoid it.) • Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface, such as on ice and snow. • Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Safety Training Sessions The Office of Security and Safety will offer several safety training sessions throughout the semester. This opportunity is available to employees and students. If you ever feel unsafe on campus, whether day or night, please call Security at 845-569-3200 or extension 3200 from any phone on campus and ask for an escort. For your safety, there are 23 emergency blue lights throughout the campus. Push the button to speak to a Security Officer and a Security Officer will be dispatched to your location.

Volume 3, Issue 2 • Always report suspicious behavior to Security at 845-569-3200. • Try to walk with a friend(s) at night. • When parking on or off campus, lock your doors and keep valuables out of sight. • Take care of your friends and never hesitate to call if someone is ill or in distress. • Exercise caution when using social media. Only accept friend requests from people you know. • If a job opportunity looks to good to be true, it's probably a phishing attempt. Do not respond. Never provide financial information, such as banking information, social security numbers, credit card information, or agree to cash any check from anyone you do not know.

• Lock your car door, room door, and/ or office door when you leave. • Check to make sure the door is locked. • Trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right, exercise caution. • Accompany a friend when they are traveling, if possible. • If you lose your wallet, immediately call your bank(s) to notify them of lost bank cards. • If you lose your Mount ID card, immediately notify Security and request a replacement ID card. SAFETY TRAINING SESSIONS

• Do not cover or manipulate any smoke detector or fire control device. • Do not use unapproved lights in dorm rooms • Do not use extension cords for a permanent power source; only use a UL approved power strip. Never overload an outlet or place a rug or other material over it. • Never use a frayed or damaged electrical cord.
