THE DO’S & DON’TS In Lexington, Spring is synonymous with Keeneland Racing. The grey clouds disappear, the flowers start to bloom, and with them comes all the excitement of wearing the warm weather fashions. But even greater is the excitement born of the knowledge that the first Saturday in May, where the traditions of the rose blanket, mint juleps, and proud Kentuckians singing their anthem, is now only less than a month away.
Skirt lengths are an important aspect to touch on for your ‘race wear.’ The races are not the place to wear your clubbing dress. Your skirt shouldn’t be higher than 2-3 inches above your knee with the options of knee length and tea cup being your go-tos. Leave the Maxi Dresses at home. They dress you down and do nothing to compliment your body and in such a crowded venue can get stepped on or cause you to trip.
America’s ‘Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports’ takes place at the famed Churchill Downs Racetrack, where champions have shone and legends have been made. The Kentucky Derby, now in its 140th year, shows absolutely no signs of slowing down, especially when it comes to dressing up and looking your absolute best. Even if you’re starting to get your outfit together now for the big day, most experts will tell you, you’re running late. Don’t panic, just keep reading.
For accessories, you can pair a simple dress with a statement necklace or if you have a busy floral, keep your accessories simple and chic. Shoes should not be chunky and you SHOULD be able to walk in them. This is a full eight hour day, and if they aren’t comfortable in the store, they sure won’t be on Churchill Downs concrete! Choose your shoes wisely ladies. It’s never classy to go barefoot around the track…don’t be that girl.
all over the world. Briana Mott, its founder, works hard to raise the bar on racetrack fashion and educate men and women on ways to shine on race days.
The Kentucky Derby is the first of the Triple Crown Races and the most wellknown when it comes to what people are wearing. As everyone knows, “It’s all about the hat…!” However, if you are looking to stand out in the crowd that day, you better focus on more Lastly, and maybe most importantly, your millinery. Yes, the Kentucky than just your hat. Derby is known for its big brimmed The ‘first leg’ of our Triple Crown pieces, but that doesn’t mean Bigger Trends is the most feminine of the three. is Better! Too many women focus on The Kentucky Derby is all about the the big hats and forget not only how ‘Southern Gal Style.’ You want to stick unpractical they are for such a long with florals, pastels, and everything and crowded day at the races, but that emanates femininity. Gorgeous they may not even look good! If you reds, yellows, and pinks will star on this are a more petite body type, you want raceday. This is the day to give your to choose a petite millinery piece. A Fashion at the Races was started a LBD (Little Black Dress) a rest and try large brimmed hat unbalances you little over two years ago to showcase for something eye-catching. and loses you under it. the unique fashion worn to racetracks 9
We’ve seen a shift toward ‘hatinators’ If you’re lucky enough to travel to the from the bigger brimmed pieces and rest of the Triple Crown Races, make we couldn’t be prouder! sure to follow the rest of the Triple Crown Trends: Preakness Stakes: This is the race to get out of your comfort zone with fashion. Mix and match modern prints, color block and bring the crazy In-Field Party, that Preakness is known for, into your outfit! Of course, keep it classy, but with a rockstar vibe!
Belmont Stakes: Black and White has never been so stylish. Monochrome in any form is the way to go here. If you feel the need for a pop of color, accent with your accessories.
A ‘hatinator’ is a cross between a hat and a fascinator. They are usually medium sized and in our opinion can be the most fashionable of the three. Everyone remembers the beautiful pieces that Princess Kate has worn at her events. These are the perfect in between of hats and fascinators. Why not choose one of these for your Derby piece?
BRI MOTT’S QUICK TIPS FOR A FASHIONABLE DAY
AT THE RACES:
1. Be Comfortable! No one looks good in someone else’s clothes or shoes. 2. Wear a pair of shoes that you have worn
If you want a bigger brimmed piece, keep the dressings or the flowers and feathers attached to the hat simple. Too many look as if the piece is homemade and cheap. Aim for a structured piece, floppy hats are meant for the beach, not the Derby. No racing outfit is complete without some sort of millinery. If you are one of those who says, “I don’t look good in hats,” first of all, yes you do! Second, if we can’t sway you to try one, then pick a fascinator. The Fashion at the Races webstore has prided itself in offering all styles for all budgets on its website so that you can have the perfect hat, hatinator, or fascinator for your big day. No one should be bareheaded! 10
many times before. New shoes on the racetrack are like a backstabbing friend…you think they are great…until they wear on you. (Oh and Dr. Scholl’s is your friend) 3. Bring Band-Aids, a makeup wipe, sample perfume and a few pins in your clutch just in case. If you don’t need them…someone else will! Who knows, you may even get a free cocktail out of it! 4. As said above, don’t go without some sort of millinery. You will look boring and undone compared to the rest of the crowd. The races are supposed to be fun and a great reason to wear a hat!

Lexi Talks: BALLPARK Fashion
Baseball season has arrived! And aren’t we lucky that along with our regular MLB favorites we have a great local team to support? Easy answer. Hitting the park can make for a super fun and casual date or the perfect playtime date for friends – “Thirsty Thursday”, anyone? Although, what to wear at the park may seem like a no-brainer, fashion no-nos can happen just as easily at the park as on the streets! To kick off the season right, here are a few tips to ensure you’re cheering your team on in style:
Support the Home Team
In our case, this is the Lexington Legends! The best way to support your team is with team gear, either a t-shirt or jersey. If this is not an option for you, sporting the team colors is the next best thing. Make sure when wearing a jersey or t-shirt that it fits well. A cute and casual look with home team gear: a jersey or tee with cut-off jean shorts and a pair of Converse sneaks. Add a top-knot or loose ponytail and finish with a few layered bracelets and studs. Fun and adorable! No-nos: over or under-sized tops and “too short” shorts. Image Credits: Tee & Hat - lexington.milbstore.com, Shorts - polyvore.com, Shoes - converse.com, Dress - aliexpress.com
Stiletto Free Style
Stilettos are the go-to for making a gal feel sexy, but this just does not work at the park. Aside from plenty of tripping hazards, the comfort level is important to consider. If jean shorts aren’t quite your style, opt for a cotton t-shirt dress or romper, in your team’s colors of course. Then complete with sandals or sneakers, simple jewels and you’re set! Cuteness: 10 | Discomfort: 0
Fun Hats, Fresh Face
What’s a baseball game without a baseball hat?? This is the perfect way to incorporate team gear and you don’t even have to do your hair! Throw it in a pony and go. Keeping with our casual style, natural makeup is your friend. If you’re under the hot sun, the last thing you need is a makeup melting face. Tinted moisturizer, a rosy cheek and hint of tinted or clear gloss and you’ll be glowing! No-nos: loads of liner, smokey eyes or too much lip color. 11

Sustainability. We’ve all heard this term countless times in already own to create new ones, and donating unwanted
relation to food, energy, construction, cars, machinery, to clothes to charities. All of these help in preventing clothes everything. However, it’s not often that we hear this term in from ending up in dumps waiting to deteriorate and allow relation to fashion—at least not until the last couple of years. them to be recycled in order to create new clothes or other products. Over the last decade, ‘green’ has gone from being just a color to being a kind of lifestyle, a lifestyle that is slowly (but steadily) expanding all over the world. Although sustainable fashion first appeared in the early 1990s, it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that eco-friendly fashion started to become a trend. ‘Green’ fashion started as a movement and project of activists, but it is now an industry that is headed by some of the world’s most renowned designers and brands, like Stella McCartney, Eileen Fischer, H&M, Manolo Blahnik, Toms, Patagonia, Wakami (partnered with LOFT), and many more. Designers adopting eco-friendly processes and fabrics to their lines has led to an increased awareness on the part of the consumers. This in turn has spurred many into becoming more conscious of the clothes they buy and the processes required to produce them. Eco-friendly fashion does not only mean environmentally friendly fabrics and raw materials. There is much more. So, what exactly does ‘eco-friendly’ or ‘green’ fashion consist of? Well, for starters, natural materials and fibers, like organic cotton, felt, bamboo, hemp, silk, and cashmere. Followed by the materials is the process required to make any piece of clothing. The process of production goes from when the first materials are gathered up until the time it takes for the clothes to deteriorate chemically in the environment. Some sustainable and environmentally friendly practices of production include being locally made, no mass production in outsourced factories, no (or few) chemicals and artificial dyes, ethical animal treatment, ethical and fair treatment of laborers, and ethnic/indigenous produced clothes. Yet, eco-friendly fashion practices are not limited to production and purchasing of new clothing. This is where most of us come in—taking a ‘green’ approach to fashion, also, includes practices such as reusing and recycling clothes. This includes swapping and exchanging clothes with friends and family, going vintage shopping, going to consignment stores, selling your clothes, using materials from clothes you
Being fashionable with an eco-friendly attitude is easy, you just have to know where to look. Besides, with Earth Day soon approaching, what better way to celebrate Mother Nature than with an eco-friendly outfit? Here is our Lexington shopping guide towards a more ‘green’ closet.
Lucia’s Boutique—This boutique features items from around the world that have been handmade by indigenous women as well as having products made fully out of recycled materials. Not only is Lucia’s environmentally friendly, but it is, also, a Fair Trade store, the only one in Lexington!
The Bread Box Studio—Although this location has creations other than clothing, it features some amazing items by local designers. An appointment might be necessary, but the extra effort is definitely worth it. Artists here use materials and fabrics in their clothing and accessories such as felt, silk, and organic dyes.
Street Scene Vintage—There really aren’t many things better than finding vintage treasures at amazing prices. In this store you can find swimsuits, dresses, accessories, shoes, jewelry, and much more.
The Butterfly Tree—A locally owned and operated shop that features products from local artisans that range from jewelry to home and garden essentials. All of their products are nature-inspired and environmentally friendly in many ways.
Your friend’s closet—Although your friend’s clothes are not necessarily eco-friendly, you are helping the environment by swapping, exchanging, or borrowing clothes from your friends simply because it is one (or more) item of clothing that does not end up in a landfill waiting to decompose.

This year old skin care and beauty company is paving the way in the industry - what’s so different about this company? Hear from two Lexington consultants about why they believe so much in this brand. MOUR Magazine: Why did you get involved with Beautycounter? HOLLY BELLOMY: A few months ago, I was talking with a friend who had been doing research on all of the toxins in our skincare products as well as cleaning products. When I began looking into it, I found it very difficult to find any skincare products that were considered toxin free. The two questions asked when Beautycounter is developing any product are “Is it safe?” and “Is it needed?” Which are extremely important questions when you consider that it has been 76 years since our federal government has passed any law regulating the ingredients used in cosmetic and personal care products. LAUREN HINKEL LEWIS: I tried to make significant changes in products I was using for myself and my family after my son was born in 2012. I tried a lot of other types of products before I found Beautycounter. Once I did, I was hooked! They were hands-down the best products I had ever used since I began replacing my old favorites. I decided to join because the movement really resonated with me and gave me the chance to educate friends and family about what is really lurking in their shampoo, lotion or lipstick. I think the chemicals in our products (that companies are dishonest about using)
will be the issue of this decade and I am happy to be part of the solution. I felt I couldn’t keep this secret from my family and friends so I decided to join the company to help spread their message and their products! MM: How did you hear about it? HB: Coincidentally, after another conversation with my friend, a former employer approached me about a relatively new line of skincare whose mission it was to create a line of products that did not contain any harmful chemicals. This is how I became a Beautycounter consultant. LHL: Through a friend! Women love to talk about these issues and the products they love! We were both on a journey together to clean up our lifestyle from food to cleaning products to beauty. We were able to share our tips or things we found along the way with each other all the time. Beautycounter was perfect for our lifestyle changes.
year old daughter loves the Lip Sheer in Twig. Everything has a wonderful smell. My skin is very dry and sensitive. I have found that I am not using as much lotion on my face during the day that I used to use and I have not had any irritation. Another thing that I like about the Beautycounter products is their packaging. It is very sleek and clean looking. Even men would not be embarrassed to have these products sitting on their vanities. LHL: How do I pick? The Lustro face oil #3 has totally changed my skin for the better! I LOVE the Everyday Clean shampoo and Everyday Rinse conditioner. The Lustro body oil and Everyday Hydrate lotion combination saved my skin this winter! The Routine Cleanser is the best make-up remover I’ve EVER used and my skin has never felt cleaner! I am so excited about our Countertime anti-aging collection. The clinical trial results speak for themselves. You can have truly effective and safe anti-aging products. I think these will really change the face of skincare.
MM: What are your favorite Beauty Counter products? HB: My favorite products are the Day and Night Hydrating Creams that I use along with the No. 1 Lustro Face Oil. And I am never without the Hydrate Everyday Body Lotion and Lip Conditioner in my purse. My 15

MM: Is there any other information or comments about Beautycounter that you’d like to share with our readers? HB: There have been vast amounts of chemicals developed and in use since 1938. The European Union has banned or restricted close to 1,400 harmful or toxic chemicals from their personal care products while the United States bans only 11. There are 1,500 ingredients that Beautycounter will never use. Every ingredient must have a purpose and not cause harm. This mission is what drew me to Beautycounter. LHL: I just love the mission of this company. Women should never have to compromise their health in the name of beauty and that is what has been (often unknowingly) asked of us for the last 50+ years and it’s time to change. We want to be the company that drives the change in the industry. We want to say to U.S. companies, there are nearly 1,400 ingredients banned in Europe for human health concerns - why do you not have the same concern for American women and families? How can you knowingly formulate products with these risks? AND we want to challenge the European companies who ARE doing better in Europe to do the same here! These European companies have U.S. subsidiaries that reformulate products here simply because its cheaper and they can. That makes me angry. It is entirely possible to formulate extremely safe, chic, effective products without using harmful chemicals. Beautycounter is doing it and doing it very well! Vogue, the New York Times, InStyle, Daily Candy, leading Hollywood actresses, countless blogs and thousands of happy clients all agree!!

Just like fashion, food has trends. The great thing about today’s food trend is that healthy eating, or in the case of The Weekly Juicery, healthy drinking, is all the rage. Juicing is typically thought of as “in fashion” in Los Angeles with the stars. But, luckily for Lexington, The Weekly Juicery is here to keep us trendy and healthy. Kimmye Bohannon, the owner, opened the doors in May of 2012 offering her “Weekly Juicers” some of the healthiest liquid on earth. In just the first week of starting her business, she had five dedicated customers and it grew exponentially from there. Now they have 120 “Weekly Juicers”. The great news is that they will deliver the juices twice a week to your doorstep. As Bohannon said, “It’s like the milk man for today’s times.” If you are not sure about diving headfirst into the world of daily juicing, you can come by the store and pick up one bottle at a time. Because the juices are cold pressed, they will be good for three days as long as they stay refrigerated. A favorite around The Weekly Juicery is Green Lemonade that has lovingly been nicknamed “liquid sunshine” because of the high chlorophyll content. Bohannon said, “Chlorophyll is the sun’s energy, and heals
and cleans out organs.” Don’t you feel healthier already? Every fruit and vegetable that they use has a specific health benefit. Carrots build immunity so you won’t get sick, and beets are great for your liver and detoxing. They also taste great in a juice. Don’t think of this as a diet that you do for a period of time to lose weight and then go back to your old habits. Think of juicing as part of an all-around healthier lifestyle. Once you start drinking this juice, you will begin to feel better, motivating you to workout more and eat healthier. Having been able to do a taste testing, I can tell you that the juices are better than you could ever imagine. There is something for everyone: from calm and collected Cool Kale Energy with kale, cucumber, beet, lemon and fresh ginger, to the sweet and spicy Debo’s Remedy with beets, carrots, greens and the “punch”, cayenne pepper. The Weekly Juicery offers free juice tasting anytime to customers that want to try juice for the first time, or those who are considering a new drink of choice. Try something you would not typically pick up. It may just surprise you.

gotta try it everyday composting
There are many ways that we can give back to the environment: plant a tree, recycle plastic bottles, carpool to work and school, bury banana peels in the backyard—wait, what? You read that correctly. Direct Infusion or Trench Composting, whatever you want to call it, is the process of turning food scraps into fertilizer. Composting is an easy and cheap way to give back by eliminating waste, and infusing the soil with nutrients. And who doesn’t like fresh fruit and vegetables and saving money?
3) I dump the compostable, organic material, chop it a little with my shovel, and then cover it thoroughly with dirt and usually some mulch and/or leaves. I make sure to pat the soil down firmly so my yard’s critters won’t sniff it and dig it all up.”
Some people go hardcore, buying special tumblers with heated chambers and tweaking the carbon/nitrogen ratio for the most efficient compost. Though some of us may not have time to be that thorough, it is a good idea to know a little bit about what you’re doing before diving in, and eartheasy.com is a great place to start. Their guide on composting covers all the basics, from which materials to use and whether they give off carbon or nitrogen, to step by step instructions on creating your own pile, and troubleshooting tips, like how to control insects and unpleasant odors.
But, if composting doesn’t excite you, Mary Beth has a few tips for weed control—the unwanted kind—using leftover newspapers. “I take a stack of old papers outside and head for a spot where weeds have been thriving. I arrange a layer of newspapers over the weeds. I anchor the newspapers with some rocks so they don’t blow away and then cover them with mulch. (So it doesn’t look like I have a heap of trash in my yard.)
My friend, Mary Beth, is the queen of what she calls “Lazy Woman Composting” and she’s got the bumper sticker and delicious-looking cherries to prove it. She collects organic waste in ceramic canisters in her kitchen, everything from banana and orange peels, apple cores, to coffee grounds (filter included), which are rich in carbon and helps the compost stay light and fluffy. Her simple, no-frills method is something we all can get behind, no matter our schedules. In her own words, here’s how her compost brings all the flowers—and strawberries, peaches, cherries, tomatoes and grapes—to the yard: 1) “I collect all my organic waste including coffee grounds (I throw the filter in, too.), banana and orange peels, apple cores, etc. in two ceramic canisters in my kitchen. 2) When the canisters get full, I go dig a couple of holes (about 1-2 feet deep) in a spot where I’d especially like to have rich soil, most often next to my grapevines, in my strawberry patch, or next to my peach tree. Or if my magnolia tree looks hungry, I give it a treat. 32
“It’s amazing how quickly it turns into dark, rich soil.”
The newspapers do a great job of controlling the weeds and they biodegrade quickly. And I feel less guilty about the trees that gave their lives so I could have a hard-copy newspaper to read.” Instead of dumping your coffee grounds and leftover kelp in the trash, dump them in your yard, next to your apple tree. With a little pressure and time, they’ll turn into “diamonds”, the kind you can eat.

Earth Day is April 22. Fortyfour years ago, groups concerned about protecting a wide range of issues impacting our environment came together on this date. According to the Earth Day Network, “Twenty million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.” In this issue of MOUR magazine, we proudly highlight a local organization and its director in an effort to further raise awareness about environmental protection. So, let’s “Meet The Pro”! Bluegrass Greensource Executive Director, Amy Sohner, spent most of her childhood, youth, and even her early college years, aspiring to a career as a veterinarian. These days her “clientele” reaches far beyond dogs, cats, hamsters and other small household pets. She and her co-workers work to preserve the environment in order to benefit all life forms and promote practical “green solutions” in which each of us can engage. Amy attended high school and college in Kentucky having moved here from California in her very early teens. While attending the University of Kentucky and focusing on a pre-veterinarian educational path, she found a relatively new degree major: Natural Resource Conservation and Management (NRCM). Having begun an environmental group
in high school, and been a volunteer in a veterinarian hospital, she chose this route for her preliminary education. Upon earning a Bachelor of Science degree in NRCM, she had a desire to work and travel before pursuing further education. A job with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife was obtained and she found she enjoyed helping animals in a broader perspective. This ultimately led to her work at Bluegrass Greensource (formerly Bluegrass PRIDE). Hired about a month after the start of the organization in 200l, she has been a program manager, deputy director and took over as executive director in 2006.
complex is eligible to participate in this free program. Bluegrass Greensource can provide your organization with a range of free resources, including help with starting or expanding recycling programs, information on ways you can help improve water quality and conservation, and assistance with becoming more energy efficient” states information on the web site. Amy said that, “Participants can be involved in one or more of the three areas of waste reduction, water concerns, and energy efficiency.” Public and private schools, preschools, and day cares are able to receive support in educating students about these issues as well assessment of implementation on school grounds.
Bluegrass Greensource exists to promote and inspire Central Kentucky residents of all ages (children, youth and adults) about a sustainable future through recycling, waste reduction, water quality and conservation. According to Amy, there are 19 counties with which she and her co-workers partner by providing resources and assisting with various program management areas. Each of the nineteen counties in the service region have a volunteer county liaison who can answer questions about existing programs and assist with development of new initiatives. The organization is a non-profit, 501(c) (3), and receives funding through federal, state and county governments, grants, foundations, and individual donations. She stresses, “There are small things that people can do to make an impact. We are a resource for all things environmental.”
Amy Sohner’s initial desire to treat disease, disorders and injury in non-human animals has been expanded to helping serve and preserve the world in which we live. She serves on multiple committees in Lexington and Central Kentucky geared toward environmental protection and conservation. When not working or volunteering, she keeps busy with family, especially her husband and two daughters. Living near the Kentucky River, she likes to canoe and kayak when time and weather permits. She encourages you to visit the web site: www.bggreensource.org to see how individuals, groups, and businesses can make a difference. ECO-FRIENDLY TAILGATING
he anticipated warm weather and beloved horse racing season are right upon us! Sometimes we think recycling and driving a Prius are the only ways we can keep our environment “Green.” Think again! Tailgating has plenty of opportunities for you and your friends to help out our beautiful planet and have extra cash to bet on those ponies, too!
When it comes to cooking time, go LOCAL! Check out the farmers market for fresh eats and ingredients. Buying from local bakeries means less work for you and more time to find that perfect racing attire! Most national brands use excess packaging and it’s healthier for you to eat local since there are less preservatives. Saving time, being healthy, and unique - I’m in!
Grilling out is a big part of making a tailgate successful. When firing up the grill, consider using propane. This fuel burns cleaner than wood or charcoal. Propane is the lowest negative-impact environmental grilling option available. Another alternative is chemical free charcoal because it simply burns longer which means you will use less. If you would rather use wood, check out Greenlink Charcoal’s All Natural Briquettes. This product is made from environmentally friendly wood sources and renewable plant wastes.
Bring organic beer! Hint, Hint: West Sixth Brewery. This Eco-act will cut down on distribution cost and travel. Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe’s, and Good Foods have local and tasty options available as well.
Purchase biodegradable cups, plates, and flatware or even better, go to a thrift shop and refurbish some vintage dishes. You can make the setting unique and theme-like, and use the dishes more than once. When finished, pack them up in a bag and take them home to wash. Easy. Simple. Eco-chic!
Carry a few thermoses of water instead of individual bottles. Use patterned cloth napkins instead of paper. A great opportunity to make your tailgate party cute and original! Even though carpooling is a no-brainer, it is great to know that it does contribute to the preservation of our environment. Plus, your group will have less hassle with finding a parking space as well as locating each other in a crowd of thousands.
