You wrote & Lexi answered: Dear Lexi, Is it really age appropriate to run around and do errands without makeup after 40? Or am I just coming across as looking a mess? -Anonymous Middle Aged Madge Dear Middle Aged Madge, Running errands happens to be one of the few times we women can get away without perfect hair accompanied by flawless makeup. Checking off your do-to list bare faced is definitely appropriate. So long as your entire look doesn’t read “pajama party”, you’re in the clear! More importantly, if YOU are comfortable tackling tasks with an au naturel face, then worry no more. If you’re not quite sure how you feel about it, a flick of mascara and a touch of lip color is the sure cure! -XO, Lexi

Dear Miyee, Have you ever tried using fabric from clothing you no longer wear? Instead of donating those pieces, recycle them. Or, while you’re perusing the thrift stores, look for items you may not wear, but happen to love the print or pattern. Finding just the right fabric to help personalize your thrift finds may take a little digging, but in the end it will be worth the search! Here are a few suggestions in a variety of price ranges. Hancock Fabrics (hancockfabrics.com)...Rag Peddler Fabrics (ragpeddler.com)... JoAnn’s (joann.com)...Hobby Lobby (hobbylobby.com) Hopefully you will find yourself a gem in the bunch. Happy hunting! -XO, Lexi Dear Lexi, I’m not much of a lipstick wearer but I’ve noticed that it’s become a big trend. How can I wear a bright lip without being too over-the-top? -Slightly Simple Dear Slightly Simple, You’re right. A bold lip has become a very popular trend. However, you can definitely rock a toned down version or even the full blown heavy lip, without feeling too done up. Here a few helpful hints: When wearing a bold lip, go easy on the eyes. Too much color in both places is, well, TOO MUCH! Forego the gloss. I’m not saying lip gloss is a bad thing, but for a brightly colored lip, a matte look is most flattering. If you’re a lipstick newbie, make sure to use a clear or nude liner to ensure a disaster-free first try! If you try it and love it, share your success with us! -XO, Lexi Dear Lexi, There are so many flat iron and curling iron options out there. horoughbreds. Bourbon. Basketball. Words that are evocative of Lexington, Kentucky and the Bluegrass region. But, there is positively more! A thriving and ever-growing community of visual and performing art is a big part of the region. Mour magazine will feature individuals and groups that have contributed to the vitality and vigor of Lexington and the Bluegrass in keeping with their mission of promoting and highlighting fashion, beauty, and lifestyle of this historic yet progressive area. Lexington, Kentucky and the Bluegrass region has been dramatically transformed over the last thirty years. Where once were barren fields, dilapidated homes, and boarded up storefronts, there are now beautiful subdivisions, revitalized dwellings, and thriving businesses. Downtown, the main place to shop through the 1960's, seized up and nearly evaporated with the advent of urban malls, but has once again come alive with modern entrepreneurs. Fashionable boutiques, culinary establishments with cultural variety and appeal, and ingenious business ventures including modern housing have improved the look and feel of downtown as well as outlying areas. There is an excitement in the city! Much of this is due to the innovative thinking of political leaders and an ever expanding creative community. Only four years old, Lexington Fashion Collaborative (LFC), LLC, is one creative body interested in promoting local fashion talent. LFC is a non-profit group with 501(c)(3) status. Housed at 560 E. Third Street, Suite 104, in the heart of old Lexington, membership composition includes fashion designers, models, photographers, makeup artist, stylists, graphic designers, boutique owners, students in these disciplines, corporations, and anyone with a desire to promote the industry. Founder and now director, Soreyda Benedit-Begley, herself a fashion designer, saw the need for an organization to bring together and promote individuals in the business of fashion and beauty. Following the first Future of Fashion Show held in Lexington in May 2009, the establishment of LFC was a natural progression. The mission of the Collaborative, as stated on their website is “to bring awareness to Lexington’s growing fashion community and to provide local individuals with a platform on which to display their talents. It is a creative assemblage that provides the opportunity for all interested in the fashion world to network. And the fashion shows have gotten bigger and better each year! Last year's event was a three day affair in order to fully represent all the talent. Future of Fashion 2013, to be held September 5-7 at the Lyric Theater, promises to dazzle and amaze with returning talent and newcomers. The event is LFC's major fundraiser. In order to support, inspire and share the love for wearable art, and provide educational opportunities for growth as well as business and marketing assistance, the Lexington Fashion Collaborative will launch their fifth show. LFC and the new clothing and accessory design company, Sorjet, would like to see a manufacturing company started in the area. It would provide local designers with production assistance and provide training and employment for individuals who have been displaced and/or have had difficulty with obtaining a job due to cultural, language or other obstacles. A goal would be to link with OWL, Inc. (Opportunity for Work and Learning) of Central Kentucky. OWL's mission is to educate and equip individuals with barriers to employment so they may reach their vocational goals. Art comes in many forms. Providing an avenue for individuals connected to the world of fashion to express their talent and love for design as well as execute and present their artistic inventiveness is paramount. LFC is determined to make it happen.

work it out Great summer workouts to kick start your best bikini bod!

all over toning & aerobic The Burpee, also known as the Squat Thrust, is a full body exercise. It is usually performed in four steps, and was originally known as the Four-Count Burpee. This version is a five-count burpee (we added the jump just for our Mour readers!). Start with 10 reps and repeat 3 times. Add more as you see fit.

Begin in a standing position.

Drop into a squat position with your hands on the ground. (count 1)

Extend your feet back in one quick motion to assume the front plank position. (count 2)

Return to squat. (count 3)

Pass through standing position and jump at least 6 inches off the ground. (count 4)

Return to a standing position. (count 5)

upper body toning The Arnold Press is an upper body exercise. For a great start, complete 20 reps and repeat 3 times over. Add more as you gain strength and say “Hello!” to that new swim suit you’ve been eyeing!

Stand with two dumbells by your hips, palms facing away from body.

Bicep curl dumbells towards shoulders.

Lift arms and bring elbows out to a 90 degree angle making sure your wrists are over your elbows, creating a “goal post” with your arms.

Keeping shoulders down, press the dumbells overhead until arms are straight.

Reverse these steps & repeat!

MOUR HEALTH & BEAUTY

gotta try it By Tamra Graves & Meagan Spencer

Summer is fast approaching and as the temperatures begin to rise – Who am I kidding? This is KY. I should say DRASTICALLY rise! – we will start to see the clothing disappear. Although, I’m sure there will be no complaints from the fellas, there sure will be from the ladies if we’re not careful. Even though we girls love the radiant glow we receive from the natural sunlight, we do NOT love a sunburn. And, as we all know, the heat here in Lexington can be incredibly unforgiving. This summer I plan to be armed with the right products needed to stay bronzed and pain free AND protected. Sun rays, how they make us oh-so-happy, can do not so lovely things to our skin. Knowing this, I turned to a dear friend who also happens to be a dermatologist’s wife (lucky me!). Here’s what she had to say: “There are several things to remember about sunscreen. In addition to not reapplying frequently enough, we are not applying properly. The dermatologist says that on average we are only putting on half as much as we should. This is probably in part to our busy lives and thinking we don’t have time to rub it in. But if you’re putting enough on, it should take you several minutes to completely rub it into your skin. If not, you’re only getting 50% of the listed SPF.

product photos from the following sites: dermashoppe.com, goodlife.com, soap.com

So what does the dermatologist use? Anything that spreads easily and is at least 50 SPF. He doesn’t use the aerosol sprays because direct application to the skin leads to the best protection. Better yet, what does the dermatologist’s wife use? I have a few favorites that serve different purposes. I’m a big fan of the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch. It’s a bit sticky, but I put it on right out of the shower, let it dry, then apply my usual moisturizer. It is important to go in this order because you want the sunscreen as close to your skin as possible. I’m also a fan of the Glytone Sunscreen Lotion SPF 40, but in my experience using it, reapplication of this product is necessary far more often than the Neutrogena. However, it is smoother and less fragrant. So if the skin on your body is sensitive, I’d go with the Glytone and reapply every 45 minutes if you’re not in the water. The Neutrogena should be reapplied every 2 hours. Lots of times, I start with the Neutrogena and move to something easier to apply during the day, like the Glytone. What about my face? This is a totally different animal because I have a skin condi tion on my face which causes my skin to be ultra sensitive. When I use either of the products above, or most any product on my face, it burns and causes irritation. Therefore, I always use a sensitive skin product on my face. I like the Coppertone Sensitive Skin and I have about 6 bottles of Neutrogena to try out this year. The sunscreen companies are really getting wise to the fact that we are trying to pro tect our beautiful faces, but we don’t want a rash, and are coming up with sensitive skin alternatives. And so are the makeup companies! Check out your face makeup and lip balm. I would bet my bottom dollar they have some sort of SPF in them. Not enough to negate the need for sunscreen itself, but it is an added protection and this dermatologist’s wife is thrilled about it! It’s summer time! Get out there and do the things you love. Just make sure you protect your beautiful skin while you’re doing it!”

Daytime Spring Waves WATCH & LEARN: Day & Night Without a Fight! Styled & Written By: Holly Kruse

Apply volumizing gel or mousse to the base of the hair near the scalp on towel dried hair. Gently work the product down to mid strand.

Apply a light cream or serum mid shaft through the ends for added shine and protection. Now blow dry the hair to about 80% in all directions.

Now its time to round things out! Part the hair into four equal parts and clip out of the way.

Start in the back left quadrant at the base of the hairline. Take a horizontal 1-2 inch section. Roll your roundbrush as you dry.

After each small section is dry, roll up with your fingers and pin into place. This will cool things off and set the hair for a lasting style. Let your hair finish cooling for 10 minutes. Coffee break!

Gently remove the clips and tousle through your luxurious locks with your fingers. Hit it with a medium hold finishing spray and you are ready for the day!

Nighttime Faux Bob Spray in dry shampoo to freshen up in the crown area, or anywhere you feel oily. Your hair will smell and feel great!

Create a base by parting off a low triangle at the base of your head.

Twist into a flat bun, and secure with pins. This is the base foundation that you will pin the remaining hair to.

The rest of the hair will be your “bob”. Spray with a heat protector. Use a flat iron or curling iron to create waves throughout the head.

Grab a few strands on the outer edge of the triangle and secure under the bun to disguise it. This causes the “bob” effect.

Leave some hair remaining unpinned through the top and around the face. Touch up curls as needed and spray for continuous hold.

Morgan is wearing a dress, necklace & bag from Pink Spider Boutique.

Psst...hey gorgeous! Yeah, I’m talking to you. Doesn’t that make you feel fabulous? Ah, the power of kindness. This year’s hair trends are derived from pure optimism, positive thinking and making the world a better place. What could be more inspiring than that? Find something obscure and give it luster. Seek out something humdrum and make it beautiful. It’s about tapping into that inner core and immersing yourself in the process of becoming who you really are…with visions of who you want to be! Mix and Match. Vary your cut, color and finished style. Give your strong color a softer finished look. Earthy and rustic shades really bounce off of a soft, voluminous style. Get a bold cut and add whimsical color hues. Perhaps an edgy blonde bob with melting pastels shades throughout! This spring, ombré continues to top the hair charts, especially with a natural transition between colors. Create alternating textures by experimenting with various styling tools and products. Say, “Au revoir” to balance and symmetry. Express your individuality by creating an intentional point of interest. Decorate. Celebrate. Save the date... and attend your party. Go on, give it a whirl.

MOUR LIFE IN LEX

CAN YOU THINK OF ANYTHING BETTER? By Jaime Shouldis

As far as food goes, Lexington is on its way up. Over the past few years, Lexington has seen a surge of restaurants in its downtown and surrounding areas and this food-loving gal is excited about it! Downtown has been at the center of my heart for as long as I have lived here. I work here, met my husband here and got married here. To say that being downtown is our favorite is an understatement. We have always loved heading downtown on the weekends for a fun dinner and these new restaurants are making these nights even better for us! One of our new favorite places is The Village Idiot. Located on Short Street in the former Metropol building ,The Village Idiot is right in the middle of the new restaurant scene. Touted as Lexington’s “First Gastropub”, Idiot is surely doing their best at living up to that name. In case you’re unfamiliar with the term Gastropub, it is, in simplest terms, a pub that serves high end traditional pub and comfort food with a twist. Upon entry into the restaurant you immediately get the sense of an authentic pub feel starting with the large bar where all of that day’s specialty beers are listed on a large chalkboard. The bartenders are friendly, knowledgeable and make the sometimes long wait a little bit more bearable. Idiot’s large upstairs is broken up in a few rooms with another bar at the center of it. Each room offers different scenery for the diner. The bar has couches where you can sit and enjoy sports on the large television. On my most recent visit I was lucky enough to be seated next to a window with a great view of Short Street and downtown Lexington. The ambiance of The Idiot is great, but what will keep you coming back is their delicious menu. For starters… their starters. With 5 to 6 choices in

their Bar Snack menu, you could be content to eat and drink your night away on just this menu. My favorites are of course the Pommes Frites or in less fancy terms French Fries! The fries are served with 3 delicious dipping sauces, all sure to hit the spot! If you’re looking for more than just snacks, there is so much more on the menu from which to choose. The starters range from their delicious Brussels Sprouts (shocking, I know, but Idiot brings this scary childhood veggie to a delicious adult level) to Lamb Sliders and Crabby Patties that are heavenly. If you’re in the mood for a sandwich the B.E.L.T is the way to go. It’s a classic with a twist! Delicious bacon with a large tomato, horseradish aioli, a delicious fried farm fresh egg on a generous portion of a toasted brioche. You just can’t go wrong when ordering this! If that wasn’t enough, the entrees offer options that are almost impossible to choose between. The Duck & Waffles is too clever to pass up. The Pub Pie is a French Interpretation of the classic Shepherd’s Pie with braised beef shoulder and delicious Sauce Lyonnaise. My personal favorite though has to be the Truffle & Crab Mac & Cheese. Large chunks of Maryland lump crab, conchiglie from Lexington Pasta Co., smothered in a three cheese and truffle mornay sauce with black truffle shavings on top. Can you think of anything better? I knew the first time I entered The Village Idiot I would be back many more times and I’ve kept true to that. With its infinite beer list, excellent mixed drinks, and a menu that will take your mind and your palate on a delectable adventure, I’m sure you’ll become a regular at this establishment in no time at all. Happy eating!

MOUR’S

HOT SPOT You can have it all.

There is nothing greater than a fresh cup of coffee with a melt in your mouth donut. However, it’s rare to find a great spot that serves fresh, homemade donuts AND quality, locally roasted coffee. One place may have amazing coffee with average pastries or freshly baked goodies with coffee you could have made at home...

Don’t settle! At North Lime Coffee & Donuts, you can have great donuts and coffee!

“Old Bean”, the owl, mascots this new establishment located in the historic north side of downtown Lexington, but behind the scenes, it’s the owners, Heidi, Joe and Teddy and their 12 employees who are making the magic happen. Heidi is the head of the kitchen, creating unique and outstanding doughnuts (like the French Toast and the Strawberry Cheesecake...yum!) using many local ingredients.

So next time you’re out to get your coffee fix, pay a visit to North Lime and see for yourself why Mour Magazine has named them a “HOT SPOT”!

Nathan of Nate’s Coffee

And the coffee? Joe knows coffee and knew he wanted to have the best local coffee he could get his hands on. Thanks to Nathan Polly, owner of Nate’s Coffee, you can get the freshest coffee in Lexington, and we’re not just saying that. Nathan roasts his coffee here in town to guarantee every cup sold is 7-10 days fresh.

Even before their official opening in September 2012, North Lime Coffee & Donuts was creating a buzz with many friends and locals, curious about what they were bringing to the growing community. Now with almost 3,000 Facebook fans and over 500 Twitter followers, they have made their mark quickly on the people of Lexington. Community involvement is important to this business. Between “MAD (Make A Difference) Mondays” where profits go to assist a local business or charity, free yoga classes or their work with Mission Lexington, North Lime is always looking to give back and get involved.

lanted downtown on Water Street, the building is attention grabbing enough, not to mention the group of guys working inside. Originally developed in 1868 as a building to house horses and carriages while lawyers and doctors would pass through Lexington, this building is one to envy as an office space. With a parking sign that audaciously states, “Yes. This parking location is excellent…but it is for The Livery only,” this place contributes profoundly in the areas of character and humor… even if there is a shortage of parking (welcome to downtown Lexington). Enter the building and you will instantly be bewitched by the genius juxtaposition of past and present- exposed brick, high wooden rafters, striking art pieces, polished leather furniture, corn-hole boards and a ping pong table. The building is a large open space, resembling a New York City studio. It is one to provoke the imagination with the question of what could be lurking within. Often used for long boarding when work breaks are needed to revive the creative juices, a large open floor plan contributes to The Livery’s character. Desks line the room on the right and left side. Facing one another, each member of The Livery has his own unique space, and while they are all separated, there seems to be a strong sense of unity among The Livery associates. The Livery is a product of Harris & Ward, a creative branding business owned by Bo Harris, 38

AJ Hochhalter, Corey Maple and Grant Ostrander. The guys are sporting dark wash denim, cardigans, and oxfords. It is apparent that good taste runs not only in interior design, but in office attire as well. Their company, Harris & Ward, is a creative branding agency that focuses on uncovering the unique brand narratives of its clients. Music production, video creation, web design, animation, networking and brand construction are only a small portion of services these gentlemen offer while assisting in any business revamp. The thing that sets the Livery apart is that everyone can utilize the facility to maximum capacity for their own benefit- the possibilities are endless. To put it simply…these guys all come from different backgrounds, possess different talents, and all work under one roof. When someone working with web design needs a photographer, they have that particular service available in the same location rather than finding a source outside their circle. All of your needs to run a successful business and gain traffic are collaboratively under one roof. Saves a lot of gas mileage too. Other services you can find at The Livery include, The New America, owned by Chad Davis who is a vintage and antique dealer and the interior designer for The Livery. For all your photography needs Bradley Quinn of Bradley Quinn Photography is ready to provide you with unique and stunning photos for any occasion. He is the in house photographer at The Livery. Last but not least is AJ Hochhalter of Listen Design Studio, a Sundance award-

winning composer. As the guys were all discussing the vision and future for The Livery, one consistent theme can be concluded- this unique business wants to make known that the base of their foundation is ever evolving and always open to change. After all, if a business embeds the fact that pushing creativity is crucial, change must be embraced. Harris, who previously managed a law firm with Ostrander before cutting into The Livery, made it known that the group “wanted something different and not corporate.” The gentlemen are advocates for having a good time and loosening up their ties, but they are adamant about a strong work ethic and meeting the client’s expectations. Combining the old and the new is essential to these young pro fessionals. When it comes down to it, The Livery does more than conjure up a perfect business recipe. They are inspiring Lexington for the future when it comes to business and creativity, and how the two must work together. Everyone that comes into contact with their modern business development will admire the perfectly molded foundation. The Livery is alive once more.
