A quote not from your reviewer but from someone who was at one of the first Beatles concerts way back in the 60’s. You didn’t hear a Beatles concert in those days, you could only watch it because the screaming drowned out the music. And what music it was - a soundtrack for a generation. It was a time when the release of a new Beatles record was an event. Now we have a West End show which attempts to capture the live experience of a Beatles concert. And it’s very, very good without the screaming or fans being carried out unconscious. Instead just nearly two hours of music played by an amazing tribute band, chosen not only for their musical prowess but also for their impersonations of Paul, John, George and Ringo. They do look like them and the individual mannerisms have been closely studied and brought to the show. There are also the instruments; Ludwig drums, Hofner violin bass, Gretsch guitar and Vox amplifiers, the fashion; the early suits of ‘She loves you’, the military look for ‘Help’ and ‘Paperback Writer’, the explosion of psychedelic colour for ‘Sgt. Pepper’s lonely hearts club band’, and finally the fashion free for all in ‘Abbey Road’. Running with the music is a beautifully lit stage, including images of Shea Stadium, the rainbow effects of Yellow Submarine and the famous Abbey Road Crossing. We also have two giant old fashion televisions on either side of the stage showing footage from the numerous Beatles tours and some entertaining 1960’s adverts. 16
This wonderful tribute band plays 30 songs from the Beatles incredible back
catalogue, surely the finest in the world. Standouts for me? ‘A day in the life’ with its incredible ending; ‘While my guitar gently weeps’ with a marvellous guitar solo, and a beautiful three guitar acoustic version of ‘Blackbird’. Some of the songs brought the audience to its feet and indeed you needed to be on your feet for ‘Twist and Shout’, ‘Revolution’ and ‘Day Tripper’ just to name three. The songs for this concert have been carefully chosen to represent the incredible musical development of the greatest pop band ever (over 1 billion records sold and still counting). All the albums from ‘Please Please Me’ to ‘Abbey Road’ are represented except ‘Beatles for Sale’. But then we do get the bonus of Lennon’s ‘Give Peace a chance’ where we are all invited to sing the catchy chorus. Back in the 60’s there was a television programme called ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars’. During part of the programme a panel, including a young lady called Janet were asked to individually vote out of 5 for new record releases. If Janet gave a record 5 it was almost guaranteed to be a hit. ‘Let it Be’ the musical? I’ll definitely give it 5! Mousetrap Theatre Projects was delighted to receive a Sandford Award for Heritage Education. We are the first UK theatre organisation to receive this prestigious award. These annual awards recognise quality and excellence in educational services and facilities which demonstrate an understanding of local and national heritage. We received the Sandford Award for the range of our creative learning projects and specifically for our new programme, StageSeen, which gives deaf and hard of hearing young people a magical day at the theatre. The judge attended a StageSeen Day at Billy Elliot the Musical, and watched the young people engaging in workshops led by signers and interpreters, an on-stage tour and a prop handling session before attending a signed performance of the musical. In giving this award, Dr. Tracy Borman, Chief Executive of the Heritage Education Trust said, “Your programmes are truly inspiring.” We will receive this award at a special ceremony at Blenheim Palace in November.
The Daily Telegraph
Arts journalist Rupert Christiansen wrote a fantastic article about Mousetrap Theatre Projects’ work that was published on 24th September. To read his piece: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/culturenews/ 9563220/Mousetrap-Theatre-Projects-givesomething-back-to-disadvantaged-children.html
Youth Forum
Our new Youth Forum has a membership of 18 members made up of dedicated young people with a strong interest in theatre. They advise us on our work and we offer them leadership opportunities. The young people who interviewed and were not selected this year have become ‘Reps’ at their school with a chance to apply again next year. Forum members are embarking on a range of projects - including creating a 4-minute film for young people about ‘how to behave in the theatre’, running their 2nd annual Mousetrap Awards and organising and leading aftershow discussions at C145 and WestEnd4£10 events.
