Features
Welcome! Welcome to the summer edition of the Juicy Word. During this term we got to visit the office of Move Publishing and experience the world of work for journalists, photographers, PR professionals and creative designers. We created content about our visit for the Educate Magazine website and Twitter account, The Foundry Agency website, as well as a big story about our visit on pages 8-9 with lots of photographs, taken by us! Reuben and Kieran say goodbye in this issue as they leave Bickerstaffe School editorial team and move on to The Blue Coat School and Rainford High Technology College. Read all about their hopes for the future and some of their funny memories! The last term has been extremely busy with inter school sporting events, Dance Fever, Treat Day, Bickerstaffe Summer Fair and so much more. We have tried to bring you some of the highlights in pictures and words from a jam packed few months. Fashion is always a key feature of the Juicy Word and we hope you like our choice of what to wear over summer. Enjoy the holidays and we will see you all in September.

Great krypton This looks like a dance for Superman Dance Fever 2015 took over the juniors this term with 18 children signing up to be part of the Bickerstaffe School dancing team. With a theme of super heroes and villains the children danced to the music from Superman, with a slick change mid-way to Men in Black. Colourful capes lifted off their shoulders and floated in the air as they performed the routine, creating a vibrant visual backdrop. Keisha Scott, unable to perform due to an injury, took up the role of team photographer and followed the rehearsals each week. The show involved over 100 pupils from Ormskirk primary schools, each performing a dance routine. The event is an annual opportunity to showcase the dancing talent of pupils and is always hugely popular at Bickerstaffe School.

A MEDAL BONANZA Cheers and smiles all round By Bethan Ashburner This term Bickerstaffe School has achieved many sporting successes from swimming and athletics to cross country. A fantastic effort from both infant and junior children has led to a marvellous medal haul for Bickerstaffe School, which the pupils have proudly displayed after each event. The Cross Country races at Tarleton High School, held in June, included both Year 3 and 4 along with Year 5 and 6, with silver and gold medals won. It was a tough course with a fast start and a short incline at the final stage, which required a last push home to the finish line. Bickerstaffe School runners showed great pace, resilience and determination right to the end. Proud parents and teachers ensured runners had super support as they watched and cheered; the biggest cheer was saved for when Bickerstaffe School’s name was announced as winners of both silver and gold medals!
WHAT A WINNER Say cheese for the camera Ms Barton By Eleanor Ashburner
Ms Barton celebrated baking success this term when she won first place in a competition. Her signature dish, lemon cheesecake tantalised the taste buds of the judges and she was awarded a trophy and a certificate, which she proudly brought into school to show everyone. We already know Ms Barton is an amazing cook and we’ve been lucky enough to also be taught baking by her at Baking Club. Now we can say congratulations to her and hope she keeps on baking.
A cloud of colour By Keisha Scott The Run or Dye 5K run took place in Aintree and it is the most colourful running race in the world. There were four dye stations along the route and at every kilometre runners were dashed with dye! Running the race was like becoming part of a giant rainbow. Each competitor received a special bag before the race containing a Run or Dye T shirt, bracelets, and tattoos. You also got a dye packet, a swag bag and
a race bib. The race was so much fun and getting covered in dye was great; before you even began to run you were splashed with dye. The race was not just about having fun though, the money raised through sponsorship has gone to the Help for Heroes charity, which helps soldiers wounded in battle. I will definitely be running again next year! Visit www.runordye.com to view photos from the day.

The Juicy Debate
Photography by Alicija and Harley • •
On Thursday 11 June, Year 5 pupils from Bickerstaffe CE Primary School came to Move Publishing. We came to learn about how magazines are made and held a debate about whether children under the age of 11 should be allowed to use technology. We were put into different groups and took on roles like journalists, debating teams, social media officers and photographers. After the debate, we worked together to use twitter, write the story and pick out the photos for our article. Overall, it was a great day at Move Publishing and we would like to go back soon!

A Spectacular Sports Day A shining example of sportsmanship The sun came out again for this year’s Bickerstaffe School Sports Day, allowing another glorious afternoon of games. With children competing in teams representing the four school houses: every child worked together with older children helping their younger team mates. From the standing long jump and the vortex throw to a challenging mini assault course, the children were put through their paces. Underneath the shade of the school gazebo, Mr Draper read the results out to a captivated audience with the announcement that Mars were the overall winners.

A treat not to be missed An amazing day of music and dance The first Treat Day held in Bickerstaffe was June 15th 1877; roll forward 138 years to June 13th 2015 and the annual event is still going strong! This year the Treat Day Committee once again ensured that the celebration lived up to its usual billing; Morris and Maypole dancing accompanied by the Maghull Wind Orchestra followed by races and the distribution of Treat Day gifts for children. This unique and important event in the school calendar is always enjoyed by the whole school community and remains a real treat for both those taking part and spectators.

Team Bickerstaffe win gold Medals all round for track superstars Following a great night of athletics in June, Bickerstaffe School’s Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 athletes won this year’s SUPSSA Quad Kids competition in the small school category. The event took place at Edge Hill University and is organised by the West Lancashire School Sports Partnership (WLSSP); it is an inter school track and field competition. The four events include: 50m sprint (Year 3 & 4), 75m sprint (Year 5 & 6), 400m run (Year 3 & 4), 600m run (Year 5 & 6), standing long jump and the vortex howler throw. Each team consists of a minimum of four girls and four boys and points from each individual competitor, for each event are added together to calculate overall scores. Team Bickerstaffe also involved pupils from Year 1 and 2, so it was both a fantastic result and hugely rewarding for the two teams to win gold.

Hollyoaks by Olivia Carlisle Hollyoaks is a television show and it is set in a village in Chester. The programme was created by Phil Redmond, a famous TV producer from Liverpool. It is directed by Eddy Marshall, Adrian Bean and Ian White. It is really like a drama show and is on Channel 4 every weekday, but if you miss it you can catch up on E4. The show is really popular and has won many awards: 28 British Soap Awards, 11 Inside Soap Awards, one TRIC Award and also one National Television Award. Hollyoaks follows the lives of lots of different people and the storylines cover everything from women having babies to people getting married. Quite often the stories have lots of twists and turns and it can get complicated to follow all the different characters, but I like this and try to watch it every night.

Film review
Fast & Furious 7 by Keisha Scott After defeating an international master mind Owen Shaw, Dominic Toretto, Brian O’Connor and the rest of the crew have separated to return to more normal lives. However Deckard Shaw, Owen’s older brother, is thirsty for revenge. A government agent offers to help Toretto take care of Shaw in exchange for their help in rescuing a kidnapped computer hacker, who has developed a powerful surveillance program. Through the adventure they go all around the world looking for the hacker. When they get the computer chip, two enemies come together and they also try to get the chip. But will they be successful? At a critical point in the film Toretto and Shaw meet and have a street fight. Then, because Shaw loves bombs, he has a bag full of grenades in the back of his car! As Toretto runs, with a helicopter overhead, he throws the grenades inside the helicopter, which explodes and crashes into the building that Toretto and Shaw are in and it is destroyed. Thankfully Toretto and his team survive. The film is action packed, explodes out of the screen and is another great sequel to the previous Fast and Furious films.
Do you want to dance? by Isabella Blain & Emily Peet The dance studio we go to is called Loretta Legge, named after the lady who runs it. We are hoping that after you read our review you will want to join. We started a dance school because we love to dance to a beat and we just want to dance all day. Our dance school is great and you can learn lots of new moves every week. You can also learn ballet, tap, modern, jazz, drama, musical theatre and singing. You can join the dance school from age two and half. Every year we perform fabulous shows with amazing costumes and make-up. What Issy likes about dancing and when did she start? I love to dance and would like to be a dancer when I am older. I started to dance when I was two and a half years old. I really enjoy Dance Fever at school too because I get to dance even more and perform at Ormskirk School. What about Emily? I wanted to start dance after watching something on TV that was really inspiring. I was seven years old when I joined Loretta Legge Dance Studio. There are lots of boys and girls in Bickerstaffe School who also like to dance: Eleanor, Olivia, Keisha, Tace, Bethan and Louisa to name a few. Oh and we mustn’t forget Mr Draper and Kieran, Thomas and Reuben! We hope you have enjoyed our review and please think about joining.
