Interest rates have been held at a record low of 0.5% for five years giving those borrowers on tracker mortgages plenty to celebrate. However, rumours are rife that rates will start creeping upwards in the not too distant future and as such many mortgage holders could be in for a payment shock. Your Move takes a look at when we can expect the first increase and what you can do to protect yourself. Would you struggle if your mortgage repayments were to rise by £100 a month? Well, you’re not alone. According to a study by credit agency Equifax over half of homeowners are worried about how they’d manage if interest rates were to rise by as little as 1%. Researchers at Savills estate agents calculated a 1% rise in interest rates would mean the average homeowner with a mortgage of £131,215 would pay an extra £1,312 towards the interest payments – equal to £110 a month. It’s not surprising then that mortgage lenders and financial experts alike are encouraging mortgage holders to start preparing for a rate rise now. WHEN WILL RATES RISE? There is still plenty of uncertainty surrounding when rates will actually start their ascent and this confusion is a result of conflicting figures and expert opinions. One of the biggest factors encouraging the Monetary Policy Committee to increase the Bank of England base rate is the buoyancy of the property market. Following the credit crunch – which was a result of out of control lending and risky (and ultimately unsafe) securitisation – industry watchdogs have become much more cautious. With property prices currently rising and mortgage lending also on the up some experts believe a rate rise is necessary to have a ‘cooling effect’ on the market. However, inflation is currently just below the Bank of England’s 2% target and it recently slashed its wage forecast for 2014 leading many commentators to predict rates won’t rise until early next year at the earliest. What all the experts can agree on

however is that rates will rise in the near future. It’s now a question of when not if. WHAT WILL A RISE MEAN FOR ME? If you have a tracker mortgage – whereby your mortgage rate changes in line with the base rate – your monthly repayments will rise. If you have a fixed rate mortgage your repayments won’t change. However, it’s worth keeping an eye on rate changes anyway as, depending on the length of your fixed term, you will need to start looking for a remortgage at some point. HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR IT? If you’re concerned that you won’t be able to manage financially when rates rise there are some steps you can take now to protect yourself:

• Check your spending Take a look at your outgoings and work out where you can cut back. Cancel any unnecessary subscriptions and look into switching your utility providers in order to get a better deal. Often paying by direct debit and choosing an online only tariff can help you make a saving. Tidying up your finances will also stand you in good stead if you do end up looking to remortgage. Use a credit agency to check your credit score and if you have any outstanding debts try to clear them as soon as possible.

• Make overpayments When interest rates rise you’ll be paying more interest on your debt (your

mortgage). Therefore, the more debt you have the bigger impact the increase will have. It makes sense therefore to do what you can to reduce your debt. If your mortgage has an overpayment facility and you are financially able to make overpayments now is the time to do so. Similarly if you have savings, using a portion now to make a dent in your mortgage would be wise. If you do come to remortgage in future the best rates are open to those borrowers seeking a lower loan to value (LTV) so the more equity you have in your property the better.

• Remortgage If you currently have a tracker mortgage you’re more than likely enjoying low repayments at present. As such the idea of giving that up and opting for a fixed mortgage at a higher rate may not be very appealing. However, fixing now at a rate you can afford saves you from payment shocks – and financial struggles – further down the line. A fixed rate gives you the security of knowing how much you’ll pay each month and whilst you’ll have to settle for a higher rate than you’re currently paying there are still some decent deals to be had. First Direct is currently offering a rate of 3.09% fixed for five years with a maximum LTV of 65%. Meanwhile Newcastle Building Society has a five-year fixed rate at 3.52% up to 80% LTV. Be warned, as speculation of a rate rise increases lenders will be likely to pull their best fixes so if you do want to remortgage do so sooner rather than later.

Work gets underway to transform Belem Tower

Residential projects boost bridging finance activity W

irral-based Bridging Finance Solutions says it has experienced “more enquiries and lending in Merseyside than ever before” in recent months, as activity in the property market continues to grow. The firm, which provides short-term borrowing so that individuals and developers can realise their project ambitions, has reported a 28% increase in lending to customers during the past six months. Commenting on the latest figure, director Steve Barber says: “Whilst UKwide we’ve seen more movement within the property market during the past 12 months,

we’ve experienced more enquiries and lending in Merseyside than ever before. Our figures speak for themselves – traditionally, we have worked with customers across the UK yet and continue to do so, however, the local market is particularly buoyant.” He adds: “There is a lot of activity across Merseyside at the moment for both residential and commercial schemes. The bird celebrates the new Liverpool and recognises the massive number of ‘firsts’ that have been achieved here over the years, arguably more than any other city in the world.

MY THING

I’m a woman of many hobbies but my main hobby of 2014 has been playing the ukulele, which appears to have taken over my life! I’ve always been musical but got my first ukulele in 2009 when I mentioned to a friend that I’d seen one in a film (on reflection, I think it was actually a banjo!) and would like to play, so she surprised me with one for my birthday. I picked it up every now and then, but in January I noticed on Facebook that a friend was part of Ukulele Club Liverpool (UCL), so I contacted them to get some proper training. UCL (run by Elaine Kinsella) meets weekly to play uke and sing. We’ve got a varied repertoire and have played festivals across the North West and gigs in venues from allotments to roller derbys to children’s nurseries! My playing has gone from strength to strength, I’ve made some great friends and we’ve all grown in confidence – a couple of established bands (The Mersey Belles and The Ukuleighties) have come from UCL and I’m now in my own spin-off band, The Three Wheelers, working towards a Christmas concert! I’d recommend the ukulele (and singing) to everyone.

Seb Cardinal and Dustin Demri-Burns have shaken up the UK’s comedy scene over the last few years as sketch show duo Cardinal Burns. As they made the transition from stage to screen, with a debut series on E4, they received critical acclaim for their writing and performances and a string of nominations for prestigious awards. Having continued their television success with a second Cardinal Burns series on Channel 4, the double act are now returning to the live circuit with a nationwide tour. We caught up with them as they prepare for a performance at this year’s Liverpool Comedy Festival.

INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

Tell us a bit about how you came together as a comedy duo: We met as film students in Edinburgh and clicked pretty quickly. We realised we had incredibly similar backgrounds (our dads are both French and our mums are from Essex). We spent a large amount of time impersonating lecturers and creating odd characters together. We then started recording characters on a dictaphone and making up weird scenes. We haven't listened back to them for years but that was the origins of lots of characters that made it into our show like the office flirt, Rachel and Yumi, Phil and Terry, and Banksy. Your sketches vary from popular culture parodies to surreal clips. Where do your comedy ideas come from? It's hard to pinpoint exactly. It can be whilst we are out and about, in a shop, a cafe, overhearing a conversation on a bus, listening to a song or cutting each other’s toenails. It usually works where one of us will come in with the seed of an idea or a character and other times we'll both hit on idea together which then develops. Some ideas seem to present themselves clearly almost from start to finish and write themselves, others can be more laborious and go through many changes. There's no hard and fast rule. Are there any comedians who you are big fans of, or take inspiration from? Many, many comedians. Woody Allen, Tina Fey, Steve Coogan, Steve Martin, Louis CK, League of Gentlemen, Lenny Kravitz, Paul Whitehouse, Harry Enfield, Lena Dunham, Will Ferrell, Julia

Davis, The Mighty Boosh, Larry David, Human Giant, Eastbound and Down and lots more. Having started out on the stage at the Edinburgh Fringe, music festivals and selling out venues, did you always aim to eventually take your sketches to television? As film students we always had an eye on writing and performing for film and TV, but soon after graduating we quickly realised that the best way to get started was through writing and performing live. The first series of Cardinal Burns won you British Comedy Awards, BAFTA nominations and acclaim. What was it like to receive such a reaction to your debut show, and what impact did it have as you moved on to your second series? It was really exciting for us to discover that lots of people really loved the show, and to win the comedy award and BAFTA nomination meant we were suddenly being placed alongside comedians who we grew up with. Going into the second series, we naturally wanted to improve on what we'd already done. We had to remind ourselves that the most important thing when creating the show is that we find it funny, always asking ourselves if it's original or different enough, a progression from the first series rather than a continuation. We hope we managed to achieve that. You’re taking Cardinal Burns on tour, including a performance at the Liverpool Comedy Festival. Are you looking forward to

returning to the stage? Are you expecting the live experience to have changed, following your TV success? It's funny when you walk onto the stage as one of the characters from the TV series – there's a wave of excited expectation that comes from the audience, a familiarity that you don't naturally get playing to audiences who have never heard of you. It's a joy to have created characters that people are so happy to see in the flesh. What can Cardinal Burns fans expect from the live show? We don't want to give too much away but we'll be performing our favourite characters from both the TV series and previous live shows. We'll also be introducing new characters we've been performing on the circuit this year. What has been the highlight of your comedy career so far? There have been many along the way – but perhaps the greatest highlight was receiving a phone call saying we had a first series. It was a real sense of achievement after years of gigging. What are your plans beyond the live tour? Once the finishing touches on the Lenny Kravitz album are done we'll be working on a narrative idea and maybe even a third series.

Bluecoat Quarter to celebrate arts and independents Liverpool arts hub the Bluecoat is joining surrounding independent retailers and restaurants for a celebration this month, as the area is launched as ‘the Bluecoat Quarter’.

The newly established zone will aim to “enhance public interest in the arts as well as creating an alternative area to explore,” taking inspiration from Manchester’s trendy Northern Quarter and The Lanes in Brighton. With 23 independent businesses in the area teaming up to form the quarter, which will incorporate School Lane, Church Alley, College Lane, Hanover Street and Brooks Alley, the Bluecoat’s chief executive, Mary Cloake, says: “Collectively, we would like to change people’s paths, drawing people from the commercial superhighway, to investigate the hidden gems of the city. “As a reward for taking an

Marcus Kossendey, general manager of Cadenzza, says: “We can’t wait to see how women of Liverpool will wear their new favourite jewellery.” The news comes as visitor numbers rose by 6.5% compared to the same period in 2013, and new shops including BOSE, Argos’ digital concept store and Bill’s restaurant have opened at Liverpool ONE in recent months.

udding Liverpool performers could soon be given the opportunity to shine on stage, as the city’s Empire theatre launches a search for talent. Following the recent success of the venue’s summer CATS production which was part of its Stage Experience initiative, the Empire’s Creative Learning Department is now getting set to hold an open audition ahead of its forthcoming version of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Taking place on 28 September, the audition will aim to find 100 performers aged 10-21 to fill all roles of the full-scale dance production. SLIM’S PORK CHOP EXPRESS 85 Seel Street, L1 4BB Liverpool’s meat eaters have been spoilt for choice lately thanks to a host of allAmerican smokehouses, grills and burger joints. It’s an apparent obsession with all things stateside that Seel Street bar Salt Dog Slim’s may have had a hand in creating, as it opened a couple of years ago teaming big beers with American hot dogs – a combo dubbed ‘steins and brines’. So if this first Slim’s venue was among the trendsetters, then surely the team’s latest offering is looking to be the most spectacular when it comes to the scale of its culinary delights. Situated next to its established parent bar, Slim’s Pork Chop Express is a small but lively venue. With pink neon pigs and a coin-coated floor, the decor is laden with cool yet subtle features, making way for the menu to take centre stage. My dinner date and I arrived on an early midweek evening and there was a buzzing atmosphere as fellow diners embraced the restaurant’s portion sharing concept. Before we’d had chance to

tackle the menu, enthusiastic staff assured us the Josper Grilled Prawns were a musttry dish. Served with the shell on and accompanied by homemade allioli, they sounded delicious so we agreed to give them a go. On arrival the heap of prawns didn’t disappoint. They were succulent, flavoursome and complemented with a kick from the allioli. Although suggested as a perfect choice to lead us into the menu, they were in fact a hearty feast on their own so we were cautious of filling up straight away. The rest of the evening menu is dominated by mouth-watering meat dishes, including sandwiches ranging from the Pork Chop Express mix of pulled pork, smoke sausage and bacon; to the unusual sounding deep fried mac and cheese burger with pulled pork and pickles. What seems like the main attraction, however, is the choice of meats available to build your own tray. We picked smaller sized portions of the 16-hour smoked pulled pork and the short ribs – seven-hour hickory smoked beef ribs with peppered house

rub and slaw. Along with a serving of the duck, egg and Monterey Jack cheese topped Coach Bombay Fries – another dish staff were keen to shout about – our choices came generously piled on a large tray. The beef rib was so tender it fell apart when approached with cutlery, and a small pot of bone marrow gravy provided the perfect dipping accompaniment. Despite the dish now being a staple for many eateries’, Slim’s own take on pulled pork stood out with its flavour too. Whilst tucking in to the hefty portions, it seemed like we were barely scratching the surface before we started to feel full, and there certainly wasn’t room to try the desserts themed with favourites from across the pond such as the Oreo brownie or blueberry tart. An empty stomach or the help of several carnivore friends is essential on a visit to Slim’s Pork Chop Express to take on its giant but beautifully cooked meat. And with its relaxed vibe and comprehensive cocktail menu, it’s the ideal destination for a night out. Your Move 85

rowds lined Liverpool’s streets to see some of cycling’s biggest stars set off on the Friends Life Tour of Britain. The entire first stage of the 7-14 September race took place across the city, starting and finishing at The Strand. Olympic gold medallist and former Tour de France champion, Sir Bradley Wiggins was among those flying the flag for Team Sky, as he raced alongside the likes of Mark Cavendish. Giant Shimano rider Marcel Kittel went on to win the opening stage of the tour, which was set to continue in Knowsley and around England and Wales during the following days. Prior to the race, TV presenter Davina McCall and Olympian Jess Varnish encouraged the public to join them for the Sky Ride Big Bike Event, which enabled people to pedal along traffic-free streets.
