EDITOR’S LETTER With Halloween and Bonfire Night around the corner it’s time to dig out the comfy knitwear and snuggle up indoors, making the most of home comforts. So what better time to catch up with Great British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood to find out about some of his favourite recipes and culinary delights as he brings his live show to Liverpool. And if his talk of homemade breads and sweet treats inspires you to get in the kitchen, our latest Interiors page suggests some top items to make you a master at baking. This issue also brings the launch of our new-look lifestyle section, brimming with news, another fantastic competition and the best events for the coming fortnight. Sefton Park Meadows

TO SELL OR NOT TO SELL THE PROPOSED SALE OF THE SEFTON PARK MEADOWLANDS HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF CONTROVERSY SINCE IT WAS FIRST ANNOUNCED BY LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL IN THE LAND WHICH LIES ALONGSIDE THE GRADE LISTED SEFTON PARK IN SOUTH LIVERPOOL HAS BEEN EARMARKED FOR DEVELOPMENT WITH HOUSEBUILDER REDROW PLANNING TO BUILD A SELECTION OF LUXURY HOMES 48 Your Move

BUT CAMPAIGNERS SAY THE MEADOWLANDS ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE PARK AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH WHILE REDROW SAYS IT’S TOO EARLY TO COMMENT AT THIS STAGE YOUR MOVE SPOKE TO COUNCILLOR ANN O’BYRNE CABINET MEMBER FOR HOUSING AND JANET PELL VICE CHAIR OF THE SAVE SEFTON PARK MEADOWS CAMPAIGN TO HEAR BOTH SIDES OF THE DISPUTE

p43-64_p03-12 21/10/2014 14:41 Page 49

HOT TOPIC

- for COUNCILLOR ANN O’BYRNE CABINET MEMBER FOR HOUSING The land at Park Avenue has been called Sefton Park Meadows but, in fact, is not part of the park. It is outside the park’s boundary designated by English Heritage. That being said it is still a green space. So why has the council decided to sell it for housing? The sale of this land will provide a muchneeded financial boost for the council – at a time when the city is under the most severe budgetary pressure it has probably ever experienced. The proceeds will be invested in projects that benefit the city. Not only will the sale itself generate funding but the type of houses we want to see built there will provide a continuing important source of revenue for the city and its residents. Liverpool has an acute shortage of executive houses. Most of its property is the lowest council tax bands, meaning that the amount we raise in council tax is below that of many other local authorities. We need to increase the amount we receive in council tax which can be used to protect services. This means we have to have more houses “Let us not forget that in the higher bands and the reality of the fringes of Sefton the situation is that these will only be Park were originally on sites such designated for housing” built as that at Park Avenue. Of course, we are building on Brownfield sites too - there are numerous schemes taking place to provide affordable decent homes. But we need the right mix of housing to help to the city thrive. And let us not forget that the fringes of Sefton Park were originally designated for housing. Of course, we understand the passion which people have to keep green space. But let us put this piece of land into context. It is a 2.62 hectare site. Across the road from it is Sefton Park which has 104.75 hectares. Within a mile is 226 hectares of open spaces. This site represents 0.04% of the city’s green space. Its loss has to be balanced against the potential of bringing forward a scheme, subject to the normal planning procedures, which can be used for the good of the whole city.

- against JANET PELL VICE CHAIR SAVE SEFTON PARK MEADOWS Sefton Park Meadows is featured within the Title Deeds of Sefton Park and has always been considered part of the parklands. Having said that it is an historic green space in its own right that has strong design and landscape features which reflect and are part of the Sefton Park design - including the grand entrance to the park from Queens Drive where there’s a unique double row of lime trees. The Meadows are protected within the existing Unitary Development Plan and that is still the document that will be referred to for the planning application. The Meadowlands is part of Liverpool’s green infrastructure, it’s within the Sefton Park conservation area and it’s part of Liverpool’s wildlife corridors. All of these are planning documents that the city council has developed and used for many years. None of that has changed. There has been no review to say the Meadows are no longer protected by any of those documents. While the council may argue that the area is small in comparison to the park, are we really going to sell land to developers on the basis of its size regardless of its protections, its location and its heritage? The council is calling the Meadows ‘incidental open space’ – normally when that phrase is used in council documents it refers to a leftover piece from a development – anyone who visits Sefton Park Meadows knows you cannot classify it as incidental open space. There are 110 trees on that so called small area – most of which are mature or semi-mature trees and have tree protection orders on them. All of these are at risk. Even those that are not cut down for building work will be severely at risk because of the construction, their roots will be damaged. The houses that are being proposed will be bespoke houses, the experts in planning and development that we’ve spoken to say they’ll be selling for around £1 million. I don’t know where Mayor Joe Anderson is getting his figures but I’m not sure that there’s a significant demand in Liverpool for houses of around £1 million. There is a demand for social housing and housing for first time buyers and there are plenty of Brownfield cites around the city for this.

HOME NEWS GEORGE HARRISON’S CHILDHOOD HOME SOLD AT AUCTION

The former home of George Harrison

The former childhood home of Beatle George Harrison has sold for £156,000 at an auction at the Cavern Club, where the band made its name. The three-bedroom property at 25 Upton Green, Speke, was listed for £100,000 by Countrywide Property Auctions, but was expected to achieve a higher price because of its association with the early years of the Beatles. George Harrison moved into the home in 1950 when he was six years old. He lived there for 12 years and it became a rehearsal space for The Quarrymen, a band formed by Paul McCartney and John Lennon that would later lead to the formation of the Beatles. The property has changed significantly since George lived there, with a recent renovation to the hallway, lounge, kitchen/dining room, three bedrooms, bathroom and a WC. A buyer from London won the chance to own the property, as buyers from across Europe bid for the slice of Beatles history. The home is not the first property sold by Countrywide Property Auctions with Beatles links. In November last year the auctioneer held an event at the Cavern Club on Mathew Street to sell John Lennon’s first home. The property, at 9 Newcastle Road, sold for £480,000 from a guide price of £150,000.

DEVELOPER RAISES AWARENESS OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY ISSUES One in 10 homeowners are planning energy efficient upgrades to their properties, according to research by the Energy Saving Trust. The research found 12% of homeowners are upgrading their properties with everything from insulation to double-glazing as the winter approaches. The research was conducted for Energy Saving Week, which took place from 20 – 24 October, and aims to raise awareness of money saving tips to improve home efficiency. Developer Elan Homes is also hoping to increase awareness of the issues, and the company’s sales director in the North, Marie Morris, says: “Draught, mould and condensation are common problems for people living in older properties with the Energy Saving Trust indicating that a quarter of those who own a draughty home are planning to install energy efficiency upgrades in the next year, compared with 12% of homeowners overall. “We know condensation is such a nuisance for householders and many will have to save up to spend thousands of pounds to try to remove it. It’s difficult to get rid of and can often be a waste of money.” Elan Homes, which is currently marketing the gated Carnatic Court development in South Liverpool, says buying a new home can often result in twice the savings compared to a typical Victorian property when it comes to energy efficiency. For more information about Carnatic Court visit www.elan-homes.co.uk/carnatic-court

Carleton House launch attracts ‘positive response’ Newly developed homes at Liverpool’s former Carleton House Preparatory School attracted interest from potential buyers at their recent launch. The six luxury departments on Lyndhurst Road in Mossley Hill are said to have received a “really positive response” after opening to potential buyers at an event earlier this month. According to Michelle Edwards, branch manager at Liverpool agent Farrell Heyworth which is marketing the South Liverpool properties, one apartment was reserved as a result of the open day and a further reservation is also currently pending. Meanwhile, some potential buyers are said to have returned to Carleton House for further viewings. The apartments combine high standard kitchens and bathrooms with traditional features including the communal staircase and stained glass windows, and the building is also set within a gated area with communal gardens and allocated parking. For further information contact Farrell Heyworth on 0151 281 8181. The Farrell Heyworth team at the Carleton House open day

RESIDENTIAL LOT ATTRACTS INTEREST AHEAD OF AUCTION A Grade II listed Mill Lane property is expected to attract “competitive” bidding when it goes under the hammer at Sutton Kersh’s next auction. The six-bedroom semidetached Olive Mount Villas is said to be drawing interest from potential buyers ahead of the 30 October event, with the auctioneer highlighting its “enormous potential” as a factor. The property, which is in need of refurbishment and is being offered at a guide price of £125,000, is one of 94 lots up for auction at the sale. Cathy Holt, auction manageress, says: “We have received numerous enquiries from a range of buyers which reflects the enormous potential of the property. In my opinion it would make a fantastic family home, or be suitable for resale or investment purposes. I expect bidding to be competitive when it reaches the sale room.” Other highlights include a five-bedroom Victorian semi on Olive Grove in Wavertree with a guide price of £165,000 plus, and a vacant listed detached twostorey lodge within the grounds of the Grade II* Allerton Hall in Woolton is also available. It is being offered on the instructions of Liverpool City Council at a guide price of £150,000 plus. The catalogue for the auction, being held at the Liverpool City Centre Marriott Hotel, is now online at www.suttonkersh.co.uk /auctions-property

HOME NEWS LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL REVEALS FIRST FIVE NEW HOME SITES The first five sites in a £205 million plan to provide 2,500 extra homes in Liverpool have been named, as the city council announces a new partnership to deliver the ambitious project. The local authority will team up with affordable housing specialist Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH), developer Redrow Homes and contractor Wilmott Dixon to deliver new properties at three city sites and refurbished homes at a further two. The first areas to benefit will be Watergate School in Woolton, which will be turned into 25 homes, and Leighton Dene Day Care Centre in Norris Green, which has been earmarked for 20 properties available for affordable rent. The final site is part of the original Holly Lodge School in West Derby, where the

partnership will create 70 houses and apartments for owner occupied market sales and includes refurbished Grade II lodges with wildlife features preserved. Alongside the new build homes, LMH will refurbish 60 homes for over 55s and create 20 apartments for rent at Marwood Tower in Everton, as well as refurbishing eight self-contained apartments for rent in Normanton Avenue, St Michael’s. Assistant Mayor and cabinet member for housing, councillor Ann O’Byrne, says: “We are already on target to exceed the Mayor’s target of building 5,000 new homes in Liverpool by 2016 and bringing 1,000 back into use, and the partnership is enabling us to do even more.” The eventual scheme will see 1,500 new homes built in the city and 1,000 brought back to affordable use over the next five years.

Radley Park show home to be unveiled Radley Park homes

A new show home will be launched at the Radley Park development in St Helens, where construction of 161 new homes is underway. St. Modwen Homes, which is building the development, will open the doors of a new show home on 25 October to give buyers a chance to see how the interior of the homes will be designed. The developer will also announce more details on the homes that will be completed before

Christmas during the first phase of construction. The homes come in a range of two-bedroom mews, three-bedroom semi-detached and three and four-bedroom detached variation and all properties have a designer kitchen included. They will be available under the government’s Help to Buy scheme, which offers buyers a 20% government loan on 75% mortgages, leaving the buyer to pay a 5% deposit. Nick Whittingham, land director at St. Modwen, says: “The opening of the show home is an important milestone and a fantastic opportunity for potential buyers to find out more about the Radley Park development, which will bring much needed family homes to an area of St Helens that is currently undergoing a great transformation.” For more information contact St. Modwen Homes on 0844 243 4504.

energy switch saves residents over £424,000 A local charity has saved Merseyside residents £424,416 on energy bills by helping them to switch to cheaper tariffs. Energy Projects Plus has worked with the six local authorities to encourage people to sign up for the Collective Switch scheme, which uses the power of collective bargaining to negotiate cheaper tariffs from energy suppliers. The latest round saw 2,400 people sign up and save an average of £203 per year, bringing the total saved up to £424,416 since the initiative was launched. The switch is the fourth to take place on Merseyside and Ellie Abernethy, project manager at Energy Projects Plus, says: “We are really pleased with the results of the collective switch. It’s great that so many people took part and are making such significant savings at a time when household budgets are under increasing pressure. The £424,000 total savings is money put back into the local economy, so it’s a good thing for Merseyside too.” Energy company E.On offered two tariffs to customers who had signed up for the collective switch and bill payers are protected from price rises until September 2015. Householders can find out more about switching supplier by visiting www.lcrenergyswitch.co.uk or by calling the local Save Energy Advice Line on 0800 043 0151.

APPROVAL FOR 91 NEW CITY CENTRE APARTMENTS A city centre building will be turned into 91 studio suites and one-bedroom apartments costing as little as £64,950, after a proposed development was granted planning permission. Plans by developer Jamworks will transform the former Reeces Ballroom on Parker Street, near to Clayton Square Shopping Centre, into 19 one-bedroom flats and 72 studios. The development will also include a new two-floor extension but the shops on the ground floor, including Superdrug, will remain. Starting from £64,950 and rising to £99,950, the studios and one-bedroom apartments will be aimed at young professionals working in the city and first time buyers, according to Property Frontiers, which is marketing the apartments. It says furniture packages

are included in the first 20 units reserved and the site offers on-site 24/7 concierge service, while apartments on the fifth, sixth and seventh floors will enjoy panoramic views of the city’s skyline. The apartments are also being offered as a buy-to-let opportunity to investors. According to a city council report which went before the planning committee, the development presents “the opportunity for the efficient re-use of these long-term vacant application premises for a sustainable use”. The scheme was then approved during the planning committee meeting, subject to legal agreement. The building was the venue for John Lennon’s wedding reception when he married his first wife Cynthia, however the upper floors of the property have remained vacant since the 1980s.

The upper floors of the building will be turned into apartments

Industry calls for reduced landlord license fees Letting agents have urged Liverpool City Council to offer discounts on a scheme that will charge landlords £500 per property for a five-year license. The new scheme was approved by cabinet members this month and will affect 50,000 properties when it is introduced in April 2015, but the council has confirmed it is discussing a co-regulation model whereby accredited landlords who are deemed to comply will pay a reduced fee. Louis Anastasiou, managing director of Andrew Louis, has confirmed his agency is among those in discussions with the council. He says this model “should enable the council to use their scarce resources to proactively seek out rogue landlords and unregulated letting agents that are not registered with an approved redress scheme”. Debra Beach, branch manager at Keppie Massie Residential, adds: “The industry would welcome further dialogue with the city council on this issue. “As a responsible letting agent we would welcome any measures to encourage responsible landlords and efficient letting; however there is great industry concern that what is being proposed would be tantamount to a landlord tax, which could adversely affect rents as it would increase costs.” The council says the scheme, which has been given the go ahead following a three-month consultation period, will ensure landlords are “fit and proper” and help to identify bad landlords. Councillor Ann O’Byrne, the local authority’s cabinet member for housing, says: “We all know someone with a horror story to tell about a bad landlord. This scheme is about giving tenants some expectation of their rights, and the city council the power to tackle breaches.”

MY THING LIA KENNEDY business development manager, GUSTO Albert Dock

In March this year I fell in love with yoga. I’d been looking for a form of exercise that I enjoy, that I could build into my sometimes anti-social work schedule, that made me feel good and kept me in shape too. I came across White Wolf Yoga at Camp and Furnace and it was love at first sight. From my first go I was hooked - not only with the impact it began to have on my weight, balance and strength, but with the amazing way it makes you feel on the inside too. The physical benefits are fantastic, but it’s the mental and spiritual impact of yoga

which has had the most profound effect on me, as each class shows how to find peace within yourself and channel your energy inward to really release the stresses and tensions of everyday life. I’ve now progressed from a tentative one or two sessions to a full five sessions a week when I can, and I’m working on some more challenging poses. I also recently got back from a three-day yoga retreat in Stockholm with my best friend who is equally addicted! Yoga has become a part of my life that I believe I will treasure forever, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

One Thing I’ve Yet to do in Liverpool... Visit Liverpool Cathedral TRACY THOMPSON operations director, Paul Crowley & Co It’s an amazing landmark which attracts visitors from around the world... which is probably why I should have been! It’s hard finding time to fit everything in; Liverpool has so much history and culture to experience. As well as being a remarkable space in itself, I’ve heard its home to some impressive contemporary art - I particularly want to see Tracy Emin’s pink neon

sign which she created for Liverpool's Capital of Culture year. I think that's what makes Liverpool so fun and different, we're not afraid to mix the new with the old. I also read it’s the largest cathedral in the UK and survived not one, but two world wars! At least I can impress my friends and family with my cathedral trivia when I do (eventually!) visit.

JOB I worked at Dolcis in Topshop on a Saturday and Thursday night while I was at college. It was a very busy job indeed and all my wages went on new shoes.

HOLIDAY When I was 17 I went to Tenerife for a girly holiday for two weeks – good memories!

WISH LIST DAVID BARNICLE events manager, The Brink

My dream concert location would be Stanley Park as this is where I grew up and performed during last year’s Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF). My chosen headliner would be John Lennon, as the entire city would be enthralled. In support would be The Dead Skeletons - a dark, mystical Scandinavian band who I think John Lennon would appreciate. They sing mantras over music that has multi-layered soundscapes, therefore the pieces are hypnotic and psychedelic but still very rootsy to rock and roll. John was also into mantras and phrases, so he’d stand with his eyes closed and his head bobbing to the beat. The Verve making a comeback would be the icing on the cake, as their live shows were legendary. All of this on my doorstep would be superb!

HOUSE My first home was a two-bed semi in Huyton. I now live in a lovely terraced house in Whiston.

RECORD My first record was True Blue by Madonna. I was a huge, huge fan when I was a kid and I had posters all over my bedroom.

PET I had a very naughty tabby cat called Bodie that climbed on top of the wardrobe and fell down the back. It took ages to rescue her.

TALENT TV’s favourite artisan baker, Paul Hollywood has been impressing the nation with his skills for years, leading the way at some of the UK’s most exclusive hotels before venturing on to our screens. As a judge on the much talked about BBC One competition, ‘The Great British Bake Off’ alongside Mary Berry, the Wirral culinary expert recently brought the latest series to a close crowning contestant Nancy Birtwhistle as the winner. As he now focuses on his ‘British Baking Live Tour’, we caught up with Paul for a chat about the programme’s rise to success, his ‘Bake Off’ highlights and his own favourite recipes.

INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

You’re bringing your live show to Liverpool in November. What can people expect when they come along? I’ll come on and do four recipes – a couple of Christmas ones and then another two. Then I’m going to get people involved by coming up on stage to help me and in the last bit I’m going to set up a challenge for four bakers to come on stage. They’ve basically got to do as good as I do and then the audience will pick a winner. They don’t know they’re going to be picked! People can also fire questions at me about baking all through the night. And it’s a homecoming show for you isn’t it? This one is. I did Manchester Palace Theatre in May because I did the first part of the tour then, and I think that was the closest I went. I wanted to go to Liverpool or the Floral Pavilion but they weren’t available at the time, so now I’m finally getting the chance to go to Liverpool. It’s a live and interactive show, which sounds like it could be quite nerve wracking and unpredictable. What has the experience been like so far? I enjoy it, it’s been really good fun. The people have been fantastic and it’s been packed out every night which is great news. It’s just when I initially walk out and see everybody I think ‘woah’! It is incredible and it’s a real privilege to do it, it’s just such a buzz. The latest series of Great British Bake Off has recently ended. Are you surprised by what the response to that show has been like? We started off with about 3 million viewers and now we’re at 10 or something. It’s just grown hugely and I am always shocked by the reaction people have towards the programme, but it seems to be a genuine one and people actually love the show. They get behind their team members, they support their baker and they follow them all the way through. It’s such great fun doing the programme, it really is. It’s gripped seven-year-olds to 87-year-olds and I find that incredible. It’s very rare that programmes like that happen. What sort of impact has the show had on baking in general? I think generally baking in this country has got much better anyway over the years but what we’ve done is highlight what we’re good at, because I think we’ve always been great bakers. Whether it’s from your nan, mum, dad or brother, when you think back you’ve got a bake you remember from when you were a kid. It could be a Soreen loaf, a ginger

cake, biscuits, a sandwich or a sponge sandwich, but it’s something you remember. I think what we’ve done is harness that and put it in a tent and people like it, so we’re onto something! What about the process of judging amateur bakers on the show. Is it a difficult thing to do? I judge people’s bakes on what I like but I know what it should be like so they can’t really hide from that. I just say it as it is. If they don’t like it then unfortunately I’m the judge! Have you ever come across a contestant on the show who has created something you wish you’d thought of? I haven’t met one yet but we’ve done so many shows that they have been repeated. When you’ve been in the industry for as long as I have very few things are a surprise anymore, but I think that when they nail it is when they surprise me; when they come out and do something that’s so professional that it tastes and looks so good, that’s what gets me. This year has been awesome; they were almost all professionals before they’d even started. Have you got a highlight or stand-out experience from your time as a TV baker? We’ve just finished filming Celebrity Bake Off, which comes out next year, and I think that’s been the most memorable ‘Bake Off ’ I’ve ever been attached to. I can’t tell you who’s in it but I think when you’ve seen the line-up next year you’ll understand and that was certainly my most memorable time in the tent. Is the celebrity version a whole different experience given they’re people who might never bake, as opposed to enthusiasts? Well yeah they don’t but they knew who we were and they were heroes of mine before. They come on saying ‘I’m really scared of you’ and I’m like ‘I watch you all the time!’ I find that slightly odd, how do they know me?! Bread is one of your specialities, so what is your all time favourite bread sandwich? I would probably say that one of my favourite breads, when made well, is a good baguette. It’s very difficult to beat a good baguette; I just think it tastes so good just with butter. You mentioned in a recent episode of Great British Bake Off that in your lifetime you’ve made 30,000 doughnuts. What was the most unusual one you’ve ever made? They were all jam. There was nothing special about them but I like to think each one of them was fantastic! The only special ones I did were for me when I used to inject about 10 times the amount of jam that should have gone in there and when you ate it, it was like a jam bomb, the whole thing just exploded! They were just normal jam doughnuts though but, for me, that’s one of my favourites.

Soda Bread Ireland’s most famous bread is made with two of its oldest foods, wheat and buttermilk. The acid in the buttermilk reacts with the bicarbonate of soda and creates the rise. If you have kids, do teach them how to make soda bread, because it’s great to be able to put a loaf on the table within 45 minutes. Once you’ve mastered it, try adding some grated Wexford cheese (vintage Irish Cheddar) and chopped raw onion to the dough.

Makes 1 small loaf • 250g plain white flour • 250g plain wholemeal flour

• 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • About 400ml buttermilk

1. Heat the oven to 200°C/Gas 6. Line a baking tray with baking parchment. 2. Put the flours, salt and bicarbonate of soda into a large bowl and mix well. Make a well in the centre and pour in half the buttermilk. Using your fingers or a round-bladed knife, draw the flour into the buttermilk. Continue to add the buttermilk until all the flour has been absorbed and you have a sticky dough. You may not need all the buttermilk – it depends on the flour you use. 3. Tip the dough out on to a lightly floured surface, shape it into a ball and flatten it slightly with the palm of your hand. It is important to work quickly, as once the buttermilk is added it begins to react with the bicarbonate of soda. 4. Put the dough on the baking tray. Mark into quarters with a large, sharp knife, cutting deeply through the loaf, almost but not quite through to the base. Dust the top with flour. 5. Bake for 30 minutes or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the base. Leave to cool on a wire rack. Eat on the day of baking – or toast it the next day.

L I F E S T Y L E L AT E S T THE JACARANDA ‘IN TALKS’ WITH STAR MUSICIANS AHEAD OF REOPENING The owners of Liverpool’s historic pub The Jacaranda are said to be in talks with bands including Primal Scream as the venue prepares to reopen. The Slater Street venue, which closed in 2011, famously helped to kickstart the Beatles’ career and now owners are looking for its focus to be on the city’s music scene once again with the help of established musicians. With The Jacaranda expected to reopen in the coming weeks, Joe Maryanji, leading marketing and promotions for the popular destination, says: “We’ve had contact with bands such as Primal Scream, who are really interested in what we are doing. Darrin Mooney, the drummer, is hopefully making it down to the launch weekend and we are ironing out a few dates with him to come and do some free drumming clinics.

“Drawing in internationally established musicians to share their experiences and talent with musicians of this city is really something we are looking to drive forward. With reputable musicians giving up their time to help develop the scene we are looking to create, it really is giving the best chance possible for young aspiring artists.” In addition, the returning venue will be encouraging musical acts who are visiting the city to perform “secret gigs” there. Adding that The Jacaranda has established links with recording studios in the city, Joe says: “When Coldplay recorded their first three albums in Parr Street, they spent almost every night they were in Liverpool in the Jac and got up a couple of times as a part of the open mic. With there being a full back-line set up all the time, the equipment will be there for anyone to get up and play.”

KEVIN SATCHELL READY FOR EUROPEAN TITLE FIGHT Kevin Satchell

Liverpool boxer Kevin Satchell says training has been ‘perfect’ as he prepares to challenge for the European flyweight title at the Echo Arena. The boxer, who already holds the British and Commonwealth titles in his weight category, faces veteran fighter Valery Yanchy for a shot at the title, after being named the compulsory challenger earlier this year. Ahead of the fight, Kevin says: “Training has been perfect. I’ve been doing a lot of strength and conditioning and been sparring with southpaws. Valery Yanchy is an experienced fighter but I am ready. The only changes to my style I’ll be making are to suit me better.” Kevin also says fighting at

Liverpool’s Echo Arena is a big boost for his chances, adding: “It will be a big advantage to fight in front of thousands of home fans. This has always been my dream and it is just the next step towards a world title.” Paul Crowley, managing partner at Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors, which sponsors Kevin, says: "It's a fantastic achievement for Kevin to be fighting for the European flyweight title. He has already done himself proud and everyone at Paul Crowley & Co is behind him 100%." The fight takes place on 25 October in the Magnificent Seven show, which also features Merseyside stars such as Paul Butler, Liam Smith, Derry Mathews and Tom Stalker.

Experimental beers will be put to the test

FESTIVAL GOERS TO VOTE TOP OF THE HOPS Consider yourself a connoisseur of beer, or simply fancy trying something new? Well Liverpool’s Philharmonic Dining Rooms will be putting some experimental brews to the test at the end of the month when it kicks off its Autumn Beer Festival. Along with a rotating range of 13 ales from across the UK, drinkers will get to try a trio of ‘improvised brews’ at the Hope Street establishment during the 31 October to 16 November event. Head brewers from Purity, Brains and Adnam’s drew from three pots marked ‘style’, ‘ABV range’ and ‘hop region’ to determine the characteristics of their unique beers, which will be unveiled at the festival, and enthusiasts will be invited to vote online for their favourite at www.nicholsonspubs.co.uk The winning beer will be announced at the end of the festival and then be re-brewed and made available throughout the winter. Meanwhile, the Philharmonic Dining Rooms has also launched a new app for its contingent of cask ale fans, providing discounts, offers and promotions throughout the year as well as an Ale Library of tasting notes to browse. Entitled Hop Circle, the app is live from 24 October and free to download on both iOS and Android phones.

Nook and Cranny to launch Bold Street event space Gift and art shop, Nook and Cranny is preparing to incorporate an event space into its brand new Bold Street store, providing a venue for everything from pop-up restaurants to art exhibitions and craft workshops. The store will be unveiled at a Halloweenthemed opening night party on 24 October based around Dia de Los Muertos – the

70 Your Move

Mexican Day of the Dead – following its relocation from the Bluecoat, where it successfully sold “hidden gems” of the art and design world. Ahead of the opening, founder Jennifer Kirby announced plans for the event space, and says: “It’s been three years in the making but Nook & Cranny has grown so much in

such a short period of time and we’re very excited about how much the brand has evolved. We’re always extremely thankful for all of the support from local independents and our loyal customers and just can’t wait to reopen on Bold Street now. Expect more incredible talent, unique products and a whole host of brilliant events.”

LIGHT-UP SKATE PARK PLANNED FOR THE CITY

What’s On YOUR FORTNIGHTLY ROUND-UP OF LIVERPOOL’S ENTERTAINMENT

Highlights October UNTIL

A proposed glow-in-the-dark wheels park could be lighting up Everton Park from next spring and is expected to attract an “international audience” to the area. Leading South Korean artist Koo Jeong A has been commissioned to create the attraction by Liverpool Biennial, which has joined forces with Liverpool City Council, Liverpool Vision and Friends of Everton Park for the project. Currently subject to planning permission, it would be the last of four new wheels parks to be produced and built around the city. Koo Jeong A, who previously designed and built the OTRO glow-in-the-dark skate park in France (pictured), is said to have been working closely with the City Skaters community and young people to devise the wheels park, which will be made with luminous concrete to give it a glowing effect. Sally Tallant, director of Liverpool Biennial, says: “We are thrilled to be working with such an established artist as Koo Jeong A in creating a new cultural destination for the city. The vision for the wheels park is for it to become a new public artwork for Liverpool which will bring an international audience to Everton Park.” The wheels park fits into wider proposals for Everton Park, which include a series of walks themed around food, art, lookout, activity and history; as well as plans for a Sky Pier visitor centre, gallery space and cafe with views across the city. More treat than trick

Lush, Whitechapel If Halloween is an excuse for children to dress up and eat sweets, then why can’t you use it as an excuse to pamper yourself? Lush has a whole range of spooky bath bombs, bars and soaps to turn your bath time in to a bubbling cauldron. Crumble this sparkly pumpkin (£3.50) under a running tap and watch as the water transforms in to your very own pamper potion, fragranced with orange flower, blackcurrant, juniper berry and lime oils.

HOCUS POCUS HOMEWARE

Paperchase, South John Street The Spora collection from Paperchase features quirky mushroom designs which look like they’re inspired by the mythical creatures of fairies and elves. Our favourites from the collection are these autumnal decorations, which can be used as bookends, paperweights or just to add a little bit of magic to your home. Bring nature indoors with these wooden (£10) and copper shrooms (£5 for small, £8 for large). They’re unique ornaments that look great together or on their own.

John Lewis, Paradise Street Kin by John Lewis is a brand designed for modern life; the concept behind the collection is to offer well designed, contemporary pieces which you can wear again and again. If you’re planning on taking your little ones trick or treating this Halloween or enjoying some fireworks on 5 November, this luxurious mohair coat (£190) is the perfect choice to keep you warm. With its collarless design and oversized silhouette, it looks great paired with this giraffe print scarf (£35), also by Kin.

A NEW LEASH ON LIFE Pawabella, Rex, George Henry Lee Building Liverpool’s first ‘concept store’, Rex, has opened its doors in recent weeks and the space is already full of quirky and vibrant items from independent retailers and designers. If you’re tired of visiting the same high street shops, then head to the basement of Rapid to find something a little different. One of the fun retailers involved is the pet boutique Pawabella; we love this Harris Tweed dog coat (£40), available in red or brown. But be aware, your pet may look trendier than you!

& Best for...

FISH AND CHIPS Fish and chips never go out of style. Whether it’s a lunchtime snack or an evening meal, with gravy, curry or mushy peas, the British love affair with the dish continues. And Merseyside has its fair share of brilliant chip shops to enjoy the traditional favourite.

PERFECT PLAICE Docklands Fish and Chips The Colonnades, L3

It took a long time for Albert Dock to get its own fish and chip shop but, having opened in 2013, Docklands is worth the wait. High quality fish sourced from top suppliers, with warming, fluffy chips and mushy peas on the side are par for the course. There are also fantastic river views and beautiful docks to enjoy while you sample the delicious food.

TRADITIONAL TASTES Byrnes Stuart Road, Walton, L4 Byrnes has been serving the people of Liverpool since 1932 and its fish and chips are so popular people will travel from across the city to sample the menu. Byrnes prides itself on offering fresh fish cooked to order and the queues at the end of the week are testament to its popularity. If you’re visiting, try the fish cakes, which are somewhat of a speciality at Byrnes.

FAMOUS FISH Lobster Pot Whitechapel and Ranelagh Street, L1 The Lobster Pot is one of the most famous names in Liverpool when it comes to quality fish and chips. There are two city centre destinations to choose from, with the Whitechapel branch offering plenty of seating, but both provide traditional fish and chips that are regularly rated the best in Liverpool. Eco-conscious diners will be pleased to know the fish comes from sustainable sources.

L’OLIVETTO

Rose Lane, L18 5EA Liverpool city centre may be keeping foodies more than happy with its vibrant selection of eateries, but out of town there are some culinary gems that shouldn’t be overlooked. My dinner date and I took a rare Friday night trip out to South Liverpool, where Rose Lane has long been a popular destination for its food and drink establishments among residents in that part of the city, and we were looking forward to trying out the Mossley Hill street’s new Italian offering; L’Olivetto. On arrival it was clear to see that the restaurant is already a welcome addition to the street as it was filled with diners getting their weekend underway, and the friendly and attentive staff quickly showed us to our table in the bustling venue. A lively and welcoming atmosphere was coupled with homely surroundings, hints of olive green decor adding a subtle Italian feel, and as a delightful aroma drifted through the eatery we looked forward to sampling the food. Both sitting comfortably

with a glass of wine, my dining partner and I scoured the menu of authentic pizza, pasta, meat and fish dishes, changing our mind from one tempting option to another. Having been drawn to a refreshing sounding Insalata Tricolore (£5.25) starter of fresh mozzarella with tomato and basil, I finally settled on the Gamberoni Vesuvio (£7.45) – king prawns cooked in fresh chilli, spring onion, garlic olive oil and parsley. I certainly wasn’t disappointed with my choice as succulent prawns were deliciously marinated in a mix of ingredients which packed a flavoursome punch without being too overpowering. Meanwhile my partner chose the Zuppa (£4.45) roasted red pepper and tomato soup with goats cheese, which proved to be both a fresh and warming start to the meal. Moving on to mains, I opted for what was seemingly a speciality dish the Spaghetti alla L’Olivetto (£8.95), made up of pasta with bacon, mushrooms, pepperoni, chilli, parmesan

and spring onion. The small but thickly sliced chunks of flavourfilled pepperoni added a delicious authenticity to this simple and tasty dish. My dining partner went for the Filetto Di L’Olivetto (£22.95) 8oz fillet steak. Served on a crispy crouton topped with parma ham, gorgonzola cheese and Madeira sauce, and beautifully presented alongside a stack of homemade chips and roasted vine tomatoes, it was a hearty dish and the meat was tender. After two courses we felt satisfyingly full, and whilst the desserts sounded tempting and typically Italian ranging from ice cream to tiramisu, we settled for a coffee to provide the ideal end to the feast. And although we were heading back to our usual city centre stomping ground to finish off the evening; the friendly service, welcoming atmosphere, well presented dishes and authentic flavours made L’Olivetto well worth the trip out of town. celebratory evening was held in Liverpool to mark the start of the fundraising Cycle for Freedom tour. Matou Pan Asian Restaurant, at the city’s Pier Head, welcomed a core team of 14 cyclists as they prepared to pedal their way from Liverpool to London, boosting awareness and funds to combat human trafficking in the UK. The night of drinks and canapés, hosted by Sky Sports News presenters, provided a chance for guests to meet the team before they set off on the five-day challenge passing through five cities. Organised by Sport for Freedom, which uses sport to educate and inspire action against modern day slavery, the cycle reached a grand finale on Anti Slavery Day, 18 October, when participants completed London’s Olympic cycling route.

RUNNERS COMPETE IN BEAT THE REAPER RACE

There were scares around every corner!

L

iverpool runners took part in a 10k race with a creepy twist, as the Beat the Reaper event returned to Croxteth Country Park. Many of the participants took to the track in spooky Halloween fancy dress, while ‘Reapers’ lurked in the woods to chase unsuspecting runners towards the finish line. The race, which comprised two laps around Croxteth Country Park, was at full capacity this year as runners raised money for a host of charities. Charities that benefit from the race include Cash for Kids, which helps disabled and disadvantaged children in the region, and Team Ella, a charity foundation raising money for charities related to baby loss and sick children. The fully booked event saw some runners have their face painted on the day, and all participants who completed the course received a medal and a t-shirt to commemorate the occasion.
