editor’s Letter... With the festive season fast approaching 2014 is nearing its end, and what a year it’s been for the Liverpool property market. This month we celebrated the industry’s brightest stars and greatest achievements in truly glittering style, when the annual Your Move Property Awards returned with a golden theme. We bring you a special round-up of all of the winners of this year’s prestigious accolades, as well as all the pictures from the glamorous event at the Metropolitan Cathedral’s Lutyens Crypt. And as well as taking time to reflect on the past year, we’re also looking ahead with another bumper Go Liverpool events guide to keep you entertained until the new year, and we catch up with boy band Union J to talk about their rise to success since they appeared on X Factor.

! In all seriousness to win Best Estate Agency for Customer Service and Best Lettings Agency for Customer Service in my home city within 3 years of starting this business is phenomenal. We are chuffed. People thought I was slightly mad to open an estate agents in the middle of a recession but I knew what we had to do to be the best, and now our hard work and endeavour has got us there. The award is a reflection of our ambition to be different to all other agents. This was an ambition of mine and was born out of frustration. The frustration of a property developer and landlord, who regularly used estate agents and wasn’t happy with service I was getting. So much so, I knew I could do it better and decided

to open my own Estate Agents. Knowing and understanding what customers want is fundamental to where we are today. I want to thank all of our customers, for initially daring to choose a different agent with a different approach, and a special mention for all those who’ve recommended us to their friends and family. I also want to say a big thank you to all our staff, both past and present, from our apprentices to our management team, you’ve all contributed in your own way and we are extremely grateful. David Burns Owner, Abode

SHOW HOME OF THE YEAR

BEST AFFORDABLE HOME

OSBORNE HOUSE, MACBRYDE HOMES

QUARRY BROOK, PLUS DANE GROUP

Osborne House by Macbryde Homes was named the Show Home of the Year. Tim Saunders, financial controller, Macbryde Homes, says: “It’s fantastic. It’s a great honour for a great development. The team have all worked so hard and it’s a lovely site and a lovely area.” Runner up in the competitive category was The Elmswood by Elan Homes, which finished ahead of the third shortlisted show home, The Sunningdale at Summerhill Park by Redrow Homes.

Plus Dane Group dominated the shortlist for Best Affordable Home with properties at both Quarry Brook and St Gregory’s Gateacre included in the final three. Judges decided Quarry Brook was the Best Affordable Home of 2014, with the homes narrowly beating The Walbrook at Home by Countryside in partnership with South Liverpool Homes. Sandy Kelly, head of HomesHub at Plus Dane Group, says: “We are delighted to win the award and it’s recognition for an excellent regeneration scheme in Kirkby, working in partnership with Knowsley Council. It’s great to get recognition of the work we’ve put in to improving the area.” Katie Davis, development officer at Homeshub, adds: “It’s a mixed tenure scheme offering mixed income homes to the local people in the local area and it’s been very successful.”

There were also awards presented to the best commercial projects and agents in the area during the 11th annual awards celebration. Lesley Martin-Wright, chief executive of Knowsley Chamber, hosted the awards and an independent panel of expert judges picked the winners for categories ranging from best show home to best estate agent, as the most notable property firms in Liverpool gathered under one roof. Feathers provided a sumptuous three-course meal and a gold-themed disco in the historic surroundings of the Crypt entertained guests late into the night.

The winner of the Regeneration Award was Harcourt Developments for its work on the Titanic Hotel and Rum Warehouse development at Stanley Dock. In one of the strongest categories of the awards, Downing’s student development at former Scandinavia Hotel, now named The Arch, finished in second place while Norris Green Village by Regeneration Liverpool and Countryside was shortlisted. Pat Power, director at Harcourt Developments, says: “It was nice to be recognised amongst your peers and contemporaries in the business. The hotel is there for Liverpool and for the people of Liverpool, whose friendliness and warmth is what is making the success of the hotel to date.”

No less than five new homes were shortlisted for the top award in the Best New Home category. After deliberation from the judges, The Ashwell at The Avenue, Norris Green Village by Countryside was named the winner of the prestigious award. Peter Vella, sales and marketing director at Countryside, says: “We’re really pleased because Norris Green for us is a big gamble but it’s been really well received. We’re getting some good sales results there and everybody has worked really hard.” Runner up was The Worcester at Summerhill Park by Redrow and the three other shortlisted new homes included Osborne House at the Grove, Sandfield Park, by Macbryde Homes, The Townhouse at X1 The Quarter by X1 Developments and The Elmswood at Carnatic Court by Elan Homes.

Developer Bruntwood’s regeneration of the Cotton Quarter building in Liverpool’s business district was awarded the Best Commercial Scheme accolade ahead of The Arch by Downing and The Courtyard at X1 The Quarter by X1 Developments. Colin Foreshaw, head of property at Bruntwood, says: “We’re glad for the recognition that the Cotton Quarter has finally changed from the perception people had 10 years ago of a run down office building to what it is now, which is a real place for people to work and enjoy. Matt Lee, head of sales at Bruntwood, adds: “It culminates seven years of work to turn it from where it was to a building that a lot of people want to take space in and it’s really refreshing to find lots of people’s perceptions are changing as they come out to view.”

The Best Commercial Agent award saw some industry heavyweights of the city go up against one another. The judges chose Hitchcock Wright & Partners as the winner of the award and Mason Owen as runner up. Brian Ricketts, head of office agency at Hitchcock Wright & Partners, says: “We’re delighted as a firm to be recognised amongst our peers, to be the best of the best and as a practice we think we know how good we are and we’re particularly low key but we know that we provide a service that is second to none. Keppie Massie and CBRE were shortlisted for the award, which saw all shortlisted agents praised by the judges for the high standard of service they provide.

A shortlist including the likes of Kirwans Solicitors, Cassell Moore, Paul Crowley & Co and MSB Solicitors gave the judges plenty to consider in the Best Property Law Firm category. MSB Solicitors was named the winner of the award followed by Paul Crowley & Co in second place. Paul Bibby, managing partner at MSB Solicitors, says: “We’re very proud. Tracey [Quirk] has taken over the running of the residential conveyancing department and we’re going from strength to strength.” Tracey Quirk, head of residential conveyancing, adds: “We’d like to thank our staff as well. We wouldn’t be where we are without our residential conveyancing staff.”

Honouring the most impressive young people in the property industry, the Apprentice of the Year award was an opportunity the celebrate the hard work of the region’s rising stars. The winner of the award was Liam Sargeant of Redrow. He says: “I’m speechless to be honest. I can’t believe it. It’s the culmination of a lot of hard work but I didn’t expect it.” Judges praised the hard work and dedication of several industry apprentices on the night and the impressive shortlist included Jasmine Preston of Keppie Massie, Georgia Kearney of MSB Solicitors, Layla Swainbank of Northwood and Emily Downey-Connelly of Abode.

Andrew Louis’ website did enough to secure the Best Estate Agent Website in 2014. Last year’s winner Sutton Kersh was named as the runner up by judges, while Abode was also shortlisted for the penultimate award of the evening. Erica Mooney, manager of Andrew Louis’ Old Swan branch, says: “We’re delighted. It’s testament to our boss and our IT manager and all their hard work. We were named runner up in the letting agency category too which is fantastic.”

The final award of the glittering evening is also the one every estate agent wants to win; the Best Estate Agency for Customer Service. Mystery shoppers concluded Abode Crosby was the best branch in 2014, closely followed by Andrew Louis’ city centre branch. The shortlist was completed by Century 21 and Abode Allerton Road. Speaking after a hugely successful night for the firm, David Burns, owner at Abode, says: “I’m happy. Winning lettings and sales is quite an achievement, and I don’t know if anybody has done that before so I’m really happy. We’re only three years old so to win both within three years is brilliant.”

SPONSORED BY DOWNING

The prestigious Best Letting Agency award was chosen using mystery shoppers to rate every letting agency in Liverpool. The 2014 awards saw a first time winner in Abode, Allerton Road. Elizabeth Fell, lettings manager at Abode, says: “We’re absolutely delighted. We’ve worked our backsides off to make ourselves known within the property game not only in Crosby but in South Liverpool and I feel privileged to work with such experienced directors and I can’t wait for the next phase of what we’ve got to come. I really am delighted.” Andrew Louis city centre was named runner up and Keppie Massie, which won the award in 2013, and PLA Lettings were included on the four-strong shortlist.

HOME NEWS Groundbreaking at £150m Great Homer Street scheme Work has begun on the £150 million regeneration of Great Homer Street after Mayor Joe Anderson visited the site for a groundbreaking ceremony. The development is named Project Jennifer and will bring a Sainsbury’s supermarket, new homes, shops, car parking, a petrol station and a new market to the site. Liverpool City Council, which is delivering the project in partnership with St. Modwen, says it will create more than 1,000 jobs once work is completed. St. Modwen has set a target date of summer 2016 for completion of the scheme. Paul Batho, projects director at St. Modwen, says: “The commencement of main site works is a major landmark for the scheme and represents the substantial investment being made in the city. This significant milestone brings more than 10 years of work to fruition and is testament to the support for the project in the local area. We are now in a position to accelerate activity on site, with a view to delivering this major partnership regeneration project by summer 2016.” Mayor Anderson adds: “This is a day the local community has long waited for. Project Jennifer will transform this part of North Liverpool, providing much needed jobs, shops and homes as well as the new market.” The hoardings for the site were designed by pupils from nearby Notre Dame College and are designed to reflect the theme of community.

The new homes at Westmount Park

Stephen Prosser from St. Modwen, Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson and Councillor Malcolm Kennedy from Liverpool City Council.

QUICK SUCCESS FOR SPEKE DEVELOPMENT Countryside’s Speke development is enjoying quick success as more than a third of homes at the site have been sold since its summer launch.

SHOW HOME LAUNCH AT WESTMOUNT PARK Macbryde Homes celebrated the opening of a new show home at Vyner Road South with a champagne reception for guests at the Wirral development. The Marlow home at Westmount Park, one of 12 luxury properties being built at the development, was opened by Macbryde Homes chairman Simon Macbryde and his wife, creative director Ruth Macbryde. Invited guests were treated to champagne and canapés before being given a tour of the home. The founder of Wirral-based Park Foods, Peter Johnson previously lived at a family home on the site and attended the launch with his daughter to see the new development. According to Macbryde, the former Everton Football Club and Tranmere Rovers FC chairman was “delighted” with the results of the new luxury homes. Caryl Russell, sales manager at Macbryde Homes, says: “He was delighted to see that where once stood a much loved family home, new families will now be given the opportunity to live in a very desirable area in a luxury home that blends seamlessly with the prestigious properties that already line the leafy road.”

Home at Central Way, which also achieved the runner-up title in the Best Affordable Home category at the Your Move Property Awards this month, has seen nine of its 28 two and three-bedroom properties come off the market. Just three months ago, Countryside unveiled the selection of open plan designs on offer at the site, including the two-bedroom Walbrook and the three-bedroom Weaver and Ashton homes, all of which are available through the government-backed Help to Buy scheme. Peter Vella, regional sales and marketing director at Countryside, says: “When we launched Home at Central Way we were confident that there was a local appetite for new and affordable homes. “Though there is a place for renting in the housing market, there is no doubting that would-be home buyers are seeking alternative options.” The show homes at Home at Central Way, Speke, L24 2SJ are open Thursday to Monday from 11am until 6pm. A Liverpool estate agent is celebrating early success after a property was rented within three hours of it being advertised. High Street Estate Agents’ branch on Aigburth Road opened its doors during the summer and has already recorded strong demand for its properties. Lynette Bray, lettings manager at the firm, says: “The lettings side of our business has been particularly pleasing. We have found that the demand for rental accommodation in the local area far outweighs the supply of readily available properties. One of our properties was snapped up in just three hours of being advertised.” The estate agent is now searching for more landlords to meet the extra demand for letting properties as well as expanding its sales portfolio with properties across Merseyside and beyond, including a selection of homes for sale in southern Spain. Lynette adds: “We approach 2015 with a sense of excitement and look forward to seeing the business continue to establish itself further in the property industry.” Demand for the firm’s mortgage advice has also increased, according to Lynette, who says they are “looking forward to developing that area of the business even further.” For more information contact High Street Estate Agents on 0151 329 2545.

BE Property has broken its record for new instructions and completions in 2014, and to celebrate has sponsored a local football team. The estate agent was approached by local under 12s football team Arncliffe Juniors FC and offered to support the club by helping it fund kits and match days. The team, which trains in Halewood and competes in the Belle Vale and Conference, plays in the area where BE Property operates and the estate agent says it is important to invest in the local community. Naomi Hardy, sales manager at BE Property, says: “Operating as an independent local business we felt that it was vital to integrate with the local community and give something back. “The team is currently are working its way up the league and celebrated a fantastic win last Sunday. We have got no doubts that it will do well and have a fantastic season.” The decision to sponsor the team comes as BE Property celebrates a record year of instructions and completions on Merseyside. Naomi adds: “This year we have broken our own records in terms of new instructions and completions and hopefully we will continue as a customer focused, prosperous estate agency.”

AGENT ‘WILL NOT GIVE UP’ EFFORTS TO SECURE INDUSTRY REGULATION FOLLOWING CALL TO MPS MPs have “missed the call” to introduce regulation in the lettings industry, according to a Liverpool agent.

The Aigburth Road branch 52 Your Move

Peter Bellamy, managing director of Northwood Liverpool, has spoken out following the announcement that the government’s housing minister, Brandon Lewis MP has rejected plans to make Client Money Protection (CMP) schemes mandatory. SAFEagent is a consumer mark which denotes ‘safe’ agents that are covered by CMP schemes, which protect the money of landlords and tenants whilst it is in the custody or control of letting agents, and had called for the government to consider amending the Consumer Rights Bill to make the initiative mandatory for all lettings and management agents. However, a letter from the minister to

SAFEagent in response to the calls is said to have declared that “at this time, he has no plans to make CMP mandatory.” NorthwoodUK was a founder of SAFEagent and Peter, who leads the agent in Liverpool, says: "MPs and lobbying groups have been calling for better consumer protection for some time, yet when given the chance to introduce legislation they refuse to do so. It's such a shame that MPs, the very people empowered to legislate, have missed the call to introduce much needed regulation to our industry. However, we will not give up in our efforts to protect our customers." John Midgley, chair of the SAFEagent steering group, says: “We are disappointed that this key consumer protection measure looks set to be rejected by government and will continue with our campaign to which 3,000 lettings agent offices have already signed up.”

INDUST RY N EWS Abode director gives apprenticeship talk Abode director David Burns visited Archbishop Blanch School’s sixth form to give a talk on careers in the housing industry and the agent’s apprenticeship opportunities. David talked to students about his own career history during the session before taking part in a question and answer session about the apprenticeship programme at Abode. Following the event, he says: “The reason

Abode does so much with apprentices is we feel not every bright individual goes to university. Some kids do their A Levels and feel university is not for them. We give them an opportunity to build a career with us.” Abode currently has four other apprentices at its Liverpool branches and David says the training is the same standard as a regular starter at the company. He adds: “The training programme is exactly the same.

“The apprenticeship lasts 12 months but if they are really good really quick, we will offer them full employment within the first year. We invest a lot of time and effort into their training so we want them to succeed.” David says he took part in the careers advice session because he is local to the area and wants to give something back.

CONTINUING SUCCESS PROMPTS EXPANSION FOR CITY AGENT Belvidere Church

Liverpool agent Sutton Kersh is expanding its team as it looks to build on a successful 2014. Having worked with local and national developers including Scott Homes and ECAM Properties to bring a redevelopment scheme and new build houses and apartments to the market, the estate and lettings specialist has just appointed new staff members across a number of departments and is continuing to recruit. Marketing manager Helen Goodwin recently joined the team, alongside additions to the residential sales, professional services and auctions departments. The firm is also currently seeking to appoint an experienced property manager to look after its growing block management portfolio. Commenting on the company’s continuing success, director James Kersh says: “Sutton Kersh is going from strength to strength every year with each department and branch growing in staff members and gaining

more market share.” The new year is already said to be looking bright for Sutton Kersh, as the redevelopment of Belvidere Church on Devonshire Road in L8 is among schemes proving successful for the city centre branch, and is already attracting potential buyers ahead of its completion in the coming months. With the scheme incorporating three-storey townhouses, a vicarage and a selection of apartments, Sutton Kersh’s city centre branch manager, James Howarth, says: “Having already sold the vicarage and a number of the town houses, we are receiving a number of enquiries from potential purchasers expressing their interest in viewing the apartments upon their completion in early 2015.” For more information about Sutton Kersh, log on to www.suttonkersh.co.uk

‘TRUSTED TRADER’ STATUS FOR LIVERPOOL GLAZING FIRM Walton Glass has achieved Which? Trusted Trader accreditation after fulfilling the strict criteria for the scheme. The Cherry Avenue-based family-run firm initially asked to take part in the scheme, before being visited by the consumer body as it began its “rigorous assessment”. Having run checks on the glazing business, which has been trading for more than 30 years, the Which? Trusted Trader team also spoke to 10

previous customers about the service they had received from Walton Glass. Having finally been awarded the ‘Trusted Trader’ status, Walton Glass’ managing director, Peter Woolley says: “It’s a very reputable accreditation and I’m really happy we’ve got it as it’s been a lot of hard work. “We’ve been in business for over 30 years and we’re one of the good guys.” The endorsement scheme, which recognises reputable and trustworthy traders, entitles accredited businesses to display a Which? Trusted Trader logo and also includes them in a Which? directory of trusted traders. Your Move 53

O N LO CAT I O N ROPEWALKS

Bold Street

Who lives here? Ropewalks’ residential offering is a popular choice amongst young professionals and students, mainly due to the proximity to Liverpool’s nightlife and cultural attractions and nearby university campuses, although families do choose to settle here. There are a number of primary schools within walking distance, including St Vincent de Paul Catholic Primary School, Pleasant Street Primary School and LIPA Primary School. However, with the proliferation of one and two-bed apartments, a family might be hard pushed to find anything bigger.

Living & working As well as being in walking distance from all city centre locations, Ropewalks also offers good transport links for workers commuting further afield. Liverpool Central train station is

the closest with Merseyrail links and Paradise Street bus station is a stone’s throw away, while mainline rail connections at Liverpool Lime Street are also accessible with a relatively short walk.

Amenities In terms of amenities, the Ropewalks area is close to several supermarkets, including a Tesco Superstore on Hanover Street, and renowned world food retailers including Mattas International Food Store and the Chinese supermarket Chung Wah. Also, you have every type of cuisine on your doorstep so if cooking isn’t your thing, you may never go hungry again with the choice of eateries.

Up and coming area Following the recently completed transformation of the landmark Scandinavian Hotel to create

The Ropewalks district of Liverpool, encompassing Bold Street, Seel Street and Duke Street to name a few, is an interesting and historic part of the city centre. Taking its name from Liverpool’s shipbuilding days when rope was lain down on the long, straight streets to the docks, the area is now within a World Heritage site which puts it on par with the Pyramids and the Great Barrier Reef. But what does the area have to offer for would-be residents?

Downing’s student accommodation complex, The Arch, Ropewalks is still in the sights of developers. While X1 is getting to work on the construction of its Seel Street apartments for students and graduates, Liverpool City Council has applied to the Heritage Lottery Fund and English Heritage for funds to help regenerate derelict and vacant buildings in the Chinatown and Ropewalks areas. In total, this could lead to around £2.1 million in funding for the area and support the refurbishment of 14 addresses, with the creation of nine individual residential units. There are proposals for Grenville Street. The Iliad Group, responsible for the East Village development, wants to create a private residential development, turning the site into housing and creating a community space.

What the residents say...

PRIME PROPERTIES Due to the nature of the buildings in Ropewalks homes are predominantly apartments, ranging from one-bedroom to 14bed (student) apartments. Efforts have been made to preserve the historical features in the district, so you can expect cobbled streets and the refurbishment of beautiful Georgian properties into apartment buildings and offices, making Ropewalks a very attractive area of the city. If historical buildings are not your thing though, Ropewalks does incorporate modern developments too, including the likes of Elysian Fields and East Village, both off Duke Street. East Village encompasses the idea of an ‘urban village’ and boasts 250 apartments along with a variety of restaurants. Meanwhile Elysian Fields provides an example of the spacious luxury apartments on offer in the area.

“We share a two-bed apartment in Ropewalks. It’s a great area, there’s always something happening and there are lots of good restaurants. All the people are really lovely too.”

“I like Henry Street, it’s quieter than Duke Street because it doesn’t have clubs and pubs and it’s quite safe. The building complexes are safe. I live in a two-bed apartment with my little boy. All I think is missing is that the council should provide more for the children, like a playground.”

“As a student, it’s a really nice place to live. I share a two-bed apartment with a friend. It can get rowdy on a Saturday night but in the week it’s fine. It’s quite a professional area too, which makes it nice.”

Got it

All

Since making their big break on 2012’s X Factor, Union J have been busy making smash hits, Hollywood films and even their very own dolls! With the much awaited second album set for release in the coming weeks and a big Liverpool performance at this year’s forthcoming Radio City Christmas Live concert, we had a chat with member JJ Hamblett to talk all things Union J!

INTERVIEW BY JENNIFER CHAMBERLAIN

In a few weeks you’re releasing your second album. Are you excited? Really excited yes! This is our second album and we’ve written 50% of it, so it’s been a little bit more us this year. We’re really excited and so proud of this album and hopefully everyone else will be too. Do you share the writing between the four of you? How does it work? Yes we do. We just go into the studio two at a time which is a good way to do it, but we all get a chance to write. You guys have really been involved with charity work since you formed as a fourpiece. What’s been your favourite event? Ahhh! That’s a really difficult question, it’s really difficult. I think it would definitely have to be the Pride of Britain awards. Going to that is so emotional but amazing because for once

p63-76_p03-12 18/11/2014 12:43 Page 65

TALENT

It’s just great to know that we’ve got such a strong fan base and it really shows on social networking sites. Having Twitter and things like that is a great way to get people involved on the other side of the world.

it’s not just celebrities getting recognition. It’s for the general public who have actually done stuff behind the scenes. They’ve done some amazing charity work, so it’s great for them to get the recognition they deserve. Have you been tuning in to this year’s series of X Factor? Who is your favourite to win? I have yes. Do you know what, it’s very difficult but I think at the moment Fleur East is really standing out. I think it’s still quite difficult to decide but in the next couple of weeks someone will really stand out as a clear winner. I’m backing Fleur! You’re going to be performing at the Radio City Christmas Live concert with the likes of 5 Seconds of Summer and The Saturdays. Is there a rivalry between you and other boy bands like 5 Seconds of Summer? Yes, we are coming to Liverpool! No, there isn’t any rivalry - we love the boys! We’re also touring with The Vamps next year and they’re featuring on our new song, ‘You Got It All’. We don’t see it like that. We feel like we’re different enough from everyone else anyway, especially on this album. I think people will recognise us as a totally different band to anyone out there, so I think it is fine. It’s good to support each other

as well – we wouldn’t want it to get nasty! You featured in Kick-Ass 2 as yourselves. How was that? Would any of you like to go into acting? To be in a Hollywood film is amazing. We were huge fans of the first one so when we got asked to be in it, it was crazy. And yes, I would love to go into acting and in fact, it was my dream before the band. I’d love to act so if I wasn’t in Union J I’d still be chasing that dream. So you’d be on the big screen if you weren’t in the band! What would the other guys be doing? Well, I used to be a jockey before the band so I think I’d still be working with race horses as well. As for what the other boys would be doing, Jaymi… I don’t know what Jaymi would be doing, working in a theatre probably. I think Josh would be working in his last job which was in an office and George would be at Costa coffee! You have a very loyal group of fans. How does it feel to be able to tweet something and see it receive thousands of favourites? Do you have competitions between you to see who can get the most retweets or favourites?

It’s amazing! It’s just great to know that we’ve got such a strong fan base and it really shows on social networking sites. Having Twitter and things like that is a great way to get people involved on the other side of the world. Twitter is an amazing thing to have and we’re very lucky to have come into the industry at 100% the right time for it. We don’t really have any competitions. It’s great to see that when you do tweet something you get a couple of thousand retweets. We’re very lucky to have that level of support. You have your own dolls. What do you think of them and who has the most/least realistic doll? I think the dolls are absolutely incredible. Vivid did such an amazing job, they’re so good. I couldn’t say that any of them don’t look like us but Jaymi has changed his hair dramatically since the doll came out. He was blonde but he’s changed it a lot, shaving it and doing all kinds of different stuff to it so, at this present moment, he probably looks the most different to his doll. I think George’s doll is great but to be honest all of them are really realistic - bar Jaymi’s hair!

& Best for...

SANDWICHES There is no shortage of sandwich shops in Liverpool to visit on your lunch hour, but if you’re looking for a freshly made, value for money and filling sandwich then look no further than these three.

WORKING LUNCH Out to Lunch 2-4 Chapel Street, L3

Out to Lunch has been serving sandwiches to the hungry Old Hall Street workers since 1989. Queues from its Tithebarn Street shop were commonplace and even the swanky new premises opposite Moorfields Station can fill quickly. Handmade sandwiches of all shapes and sizes, as well as soups, salads and hot drinks make this a lunchtime winner – and as they’re made in front of you, they can be made to your exact requirements.

SPEND SOME DOUGH Baltic Bakehouse 46 Bridgewater Street, L1 The artisan bakery in the Baltic Triangle is no longer a hidden gem; it seems everybody knows about the handmade sour doughs, breakfast butties and delicious sticky buns on offer. Follow the company’s Twitter and Facebook pages to get day-by-day updates on fresh lunch sandwiches with bread straight from the oven and only the best ingredients for fillings.

NEAT TREAT EAT Liverpool ONE, L1 Nestled in Liverpool ONE among a host of cafes and coffee shops, EAT stands out because of the quality of the food and the range of sandwiches on offer. EAT offers an extensive selection of sandwiches, wraps and baguettes that are all made on site. In fact, the shop prides itself on never offering a pre-packed sandwich shipped in from elsewhere. For something warming this winter, a range of toasties and ‘hot flats’ are also available.

BARLEY AND BEANS 17 Hatton Garden, L3 Moose Café on Dale Street has gone from cult hit to popular breakfast diner, with queues often stretching out of the door. So it is no surprise to see other venues springing up to take advantage of the clear demand for filling breakfasts at decent prices. The latest to arrive is Barley and Beans in Hatton Garden, perfectly located to take advantage of the large student population and the nearby business district. It offers comfortable, soft seating, a massive TV screen showing the latest sports and over half the menu given over to breakfast, including plenty of pancakes and eggs cooked in every way imaginable. It may seem confusing therefore, that myself and my dining partner visited on a wet and windy Thursday evening, when the lights had been dimmed, candles had been placed on the tables and the bar was gearing up to serve a variety of cocktails. However, the team at Barley and Beans says the diner is all things to all people, from morning to night it promises to feed you and help you relax at all

REVIEW BY STEPHEN HURRELL

times of the day. It’s the little things in Barley and Beans that impress; the large bowl of pistachios (£1) to nibble before the meal, the stylish salt and pepper shakers and the immaculately presented Amaretto sour cocktail (two for £7.50). A spot of eavesdropping on nearby tables confirmed we weren’t the only ones considering choosing an all-day breakfast option but eventually I plumped for the chickpea, mushroom and butternut squash burger (£7.25). It was almost impossibly tall with fresh salad ingredients and generous helpings of goats’ cheese and caramelised onions, all served with delicious chunky chips in a mini metal basket. My date chose the Caesar salad (£7) and was confronted with a huge plate. There was plenty of succulent chicken and it was seasoned and presented well. Throughout the visit the attention to detail in the cooking stood out. Each

ingredient was finely balanced and it never felt stodgy or processed, which you can often find at these prices. So impressive was the quality of the food at Barley and Beans I returned a week later to sample the vegetarian breakfast (£6.25) – one of the best in the city thanks to its use of wonderfully salty, chewy halloumi in place of the usual faux-meat options. My companion tried the greasefree full English (£6.75), which was cooked to perfection and once again offered excellent value. While the cocktails clash slightly with the relaxed atmosphere and all-day breakfast focus of Barley and Beans, the diner is a hidden gem in the city’s breakfast (and lunch) offering. Staff are happy to stop and have a chat, the little extras such as chocolate-covered peanuts at each table, and quality of the cooking set it apart and ensure this is a venue I will return to time and time again.

We think the fast approaching festive season is the perfect excuse to brighten up your home with these gorgeous lights.

ARGENTINEAN STEAK HOUSE HEADING FOR CASTLE STREET Argentinean restaurant CAU has confirmed it will open on Castle Street next year, promising “something very special” for fans of South American cuisine. The restaurant will move in to the ground floor of the Queen Insurance Buildings, and will be the chain’s first opening in the north of England. Charley Springall, marketing director at CAU restaurants, says: “At CAU our aim is to bring the flavour and diversity of Buenos Aires’ cuisine to Liverpool. Our Argentinean beef cuts are obviously something very special, but it’s the attention to detail and the ethos of making everything fresh on site that really sets us apart from the rest.” Fit-out will begin next year and the restaurant is scheduled to open in the first half of 2015.

She is confident, glamorous and wants to look her best at all times”. A surprise celebrity will open the store and will be announced nearer the time.

NEWS

New festival to ‘showcase the brillliance’ of city’s culture A new three-day festival will take place in August 2015 celebrating all the city has to offer, from its cultural scene to its bustling business community. Going by the name of Liverpool Loves, the event is the brainchild of Debbie Boyd, director of Orb Events which helped pioneer the successful Brazilica and Liverpool Pride. We caught up with Debbie to find out more about what Liverpool Loves will bring to the city’s already vibrant calendar of events.

What prompted the idea for Liverpool Loves, and how long has it been in the pipeline? Two years ago I realised that since we lost the Beatles festival there wasn’t a festival that wrapped Liverpool up in a big shiny bow to promote the city nationally and internationally. That was in the back of my mind and, as work took over, it fell by the wayside. However, during the International Festival for Business (IFB), people strangely started following the Liverpool Loves account on Twitter, prompting me to look again at the plan from not only a cultural and food perspective but also a business perspective. In my opinion, the IFB was great for Liverpool but didn’t really touch on the wealth of fantastic businesses we’ve got in this city. I don’t think there’s enough opportunity for people to showcase themselves. Not only are we showcasing all of the city’s independents, social enterprises, community interest companies and small business owners; we’re also showcasing the brilliance of the cultural players we’ve got. What will the key cultural features of the festival be and who will be participating? We’re putting a circus big top on Pier Head and we’ve got some brilliant aerial performers and stuff like birds of prey performers. Cultural organisations are businesses as well, so there’ll be a good mix of nuts and bolts businesses along with the cultural businesses of the city. I think it’ll be really engaging. Then on the festival day, I’m working with up and coming musicians so we can showcase

unsung artists and give dance schools and people doing amazing things a platform to perform in front of a big audience who’ll probably never have heard of them before. Obviously there’ll be quite a lot of site animation. I was inspired by Glastonbury in the summer and I want Pier Head to be really dressed, colourful and engaging. I’m hoping it’s going to be very different from everything else in the city in terms of content and how it looks. Is it going to be a waterfront festival or will there be a presence elsewhere in the city? The title is a dream because Liverpool can ‘love’ anything. We had so many ideas of what we could deliver, such as ‘Liverpool Loves Nightlife’, ‘Liverpool Loves Education’ and Liverpool Loves Sport’. We hope to deliver all of these in the future or as part of a fringe event. At the moment we’re doing an open call for organisations to get involved and we want to make sure every area of our city is represented. What we’ve decided to deliver this time is not the be all and end all of Liverpool Loves. With it being the first event, we want to make sure we deliver titles with a wide appeal. Culture is wide in terms of appeal, food is a wide title and business was one of those things we thought was necessary. Well being is another part of the festival we feel passionate about, and will be the community activity part of the festival. Around the grassed area of Pier Head there’s going to be animation, tai chi by the River Mersey, dance classes and people getting involved from a community perspective.

TALKS TO HOLD FLYOVER EVENTS ON SUNDAYS Liverpool City Council is in talks with Friends of the Flyover to close Churchill Way in the city centre on Sundays for community events and festivals. The group says “proposals are being considered” to allow the team to stage further events such as the Flyover Fest which took place in July, attracting 3,000 visitors to the flyover to see plans for a market, allotment and community hub. The Friends of the Flyover team has also taken delivery of a flat-pack house that starred in London’s Design Festival. The Wiki-House is an open source project by the Building Centre to create a house that can be ‘printed

Is the festival for the Liverpool community to celebrate its strengths or is it about showcasing the city to visitors? It’s both. We’ve got to get our house in order and then when that’s a beautiful, really strong offering, there’s no reason why we can’t look to market this festival nationally and internationally. We’re legends in the world and there are still legs in creating something where people outside of the city will be interested to come and see what we’re about. We’ve got an international festival of music and an international festival of business but what about promoting Liverpool internationally as a package? What’s the long term vision? I think it should be a week-long event with fringe events throughout the city. We’re actually talking to Toxteth Fire Fit Hub about bringing the market from a big city centre festival perspective to support and promote events they’ll be doing under the banner of ‘Liverpool Loves Sport’. I’d also like to do some activities in North Liverpool and the outlying areas in the hope that we can support wider city initiatives. For instance, ‘Liverpool Loves Healthy Eating’ – there are lots of allotments and farmers’ markets, and this could all fit under the title of Liverpool Loves. I see this as a brand that can carry a lot of good initiatives for the city, not only in the centre but other areas to make them feel part of something.

off ’ the internet using a machine cutter and built in less than a week. It will be rebuilt in spring 2015 and, once complete, will be used as a pop-up event space and also a learning tool for the city’s social The Wiki-House will provide a pop-up event space housing, self-build, architecture and design industries. Steve Threlfall from Friends of the Flyover says: “The Wiki-House is a great way for us to provide a pop-up event space that community groups and businesses, as well as ourselves, can use.” The Friends of the Flyover team raised over £40,000 through crowd funding to complete a full feasibility study to pedestrianise the two-lane flyover and create an urban park and market similar to New York’s famous High Line scheme.

My favourite with...

LEANNE CAMPBELL Leanne Campbell is well known for waking up Liverpool as a host on Radio City’s Breakfast Show alongside fellow presenter Dave Kelly. However, having also starred on the stage and screen from an early age, she’s now getting set for another festive acting role in this year’s Liverpool Empire pantomime, Aladdin. Starring alongside Ray Quinn and Claire Sweeney to play Princess Jasmine, Leanne took a quick break from rehearsals to share a few of her favourites.

Favourite thing about Liverpool:

Favourite film:

The accent, we have the best accent in the world! It just makes me smile it's so warm and friendly. When you are away from home and you hear someone in the crowd speak ‘Scouse' it's like music to your ears. We have our own language don't we? I'm very proud of it.

‘What Lies Beneath’ with Michelle Pfeiffer. I love a good scary one.

Favourite musician: I love Musiq Soulchild. He's well worth a Google if you haven't heard of him, or search for him on YouTube. Listen to his song 'Just Friends', it's so catchy and it's my party piece. I sing it after a few wines in the company of my closest friends! I have had his album 'Aijuswanaseing' since about 2000 and I still listen to it. He's brilliant.

Favourite album: ‘Room 112’ by 112. I'm a mad RnB fan and it was the first gift my husband bought me when we started dating.

Favourite play or musical: I was lucky enough to see ‘Jersey Boys’ on Broadway this month. It's fantastic, the music is brilliant and it's so funny. I can’t wait until it comes to the Empire next year. Nobody danced in the aisles in New York but I bet we do in Liverpool!

Favourite career moment: Giving a local family £6,000 to pay for a life changing machine, that's the reason I got into radio. I used to hear things like that on Radio City when I was little and think that must be the best job in the world. We have just launched 'Mission Christmas' and the aim is to make sure every child in our area wakes up to a present on Christmas morning. Check out radiocity.co.uk if you want to help.

Favourite city: My city - nowhere else compares to Liverpool.
