! In all seriousness to win Best Estate Agency for Customer Service and Best Lettings Agency for Customer Service in my home city within 3 years of starting this business is phenomenal. We are chuffed. People thought I was slightly mad to open an estate agents in the middle of a recession but I knew what we had to do to be the best, and now our hard work and endeavour has got us there. The award is a reflection of our ambition to be different to all other agents. This was an ambition of mine and was born out of frustration. The frustration of a property developer and landlord, who regularly used estate agents and wasn’t happy with service I was getting. So much so, I knew I could do it better and decided
to open my own Estate Agents. Knowing and understanding what customers want is fundamental to where we are today. I want to thank all of our customers, for initially daring to choose a different agent with a different approach, and a special mention for all those who’ve recommended us to their friends and family. I also want to say a big thank you to all our staff, both past and present, from our apprentices to our management team, you’ve all contributed in your own way and we are extremely grateful. David Burns Owner, Abode

HOME NEWS Florist spreads Christmas spirit to Redrow homes
Michelle Conroy and Lorraine Whittle with their Dutch Flower Shop wreaths
Buyers at Redrow developments in the Liverpool area are being given a masterclass in sprucing up their brand new homes for the festive season, thanks to a local florist. A video demonstration of how to make a festive wreath by Michelle Conroy, a designer florist at the Dutch Flower Shop on Woolton Road, is being shown at Redrow developments to inspire buyers to decorate their front doors. According to owner Lorraine Whittle the flower shop, which has been trading in the area for 35 years, was asked to make the video for Redrow as its own wreath-making classes have become a success. The video is the latest Redrow project for the business, which has already been working with the property developer to provide welcome flowers for buyers at its developments, including the New Heys scheme in South Liverpool.

‘EXCLUSIVE’ RESIDENTIAL TOWER TO KICK START LIVERPOOL WATERS SCHEME A proposed new 40-storey residential tower on Liverpool’s waterfront could become one of the city’s “most exclusive rental addresses” once it is complete, according to its developer.
CENTURY 21 BRINGING NEW-BUILD RENTAL PROPERTIES TO THE MARKET A share of 927 new rental homes is being built across the Liverpool area, as part of a major project being delivered by Century 21 UK and sister company Direct Lettings. The mix of new family homes and apartments is being constructed at four Merseyside developments in Huyton, Knowsley and Norris Green Village as well as 10 Greater Manchester sites after a wider nationwide deal was confirmed. Century 21 will be handling tenant selection for new properties along with Direct Lettings, after the agents’ owner, Shepherd Direct has agreed to manage all lettings and property management for the overall deal by residential and urban regeneration specialist Sigma, with equity from Gatehouse Bank plc and bank finance. The joint venture will create Britain’s largest private rental sector portfolio. Dan Pennington, director of the Century 21 Liverpool, which is currently planning expansion into the north of the city, says the houses will range from two to four bedrooms and the first are expected to be ready for February 2015. He adds: “This is a fantastic opportunity to provide quality new homes to the rental sector in Liverpool and we are very excited to be the agent offering such a great unique product. “Century 21 has been working hard on this deal for quite a while. We knew it was coming and it is very exciting to now have everything signed and the date for the first houses to rent. “We will have full information and be doing a large ad campaign over the coming weeks.”
Moda Living has agreed a deal with Peel Group to build a tower, named Princes Reach, featuring 325 apartments available for the private rental sector. The development would signal the beginning of Peel’s proposed £5.5 billion transformation of Liverpool’s northern docks. Covering 60 acres of land at Princes Dock, the first designs of the residential tower have not been revealed but the developer is targeting a completion date of 2017 subject to planning consent. According to Moda Living: “Princes Reach represents the first residential piece in the Liverpool Waters masterplan, a project by Peel Group to regenerate 60 plus hectares of historic dockland to create a world class, high quality, mixed use waterfront quarter in central Liverpool. Tower One will be the most exclusive rental address in the city and boast the full complement of the Moda Model services and facilities.” Moda Living is a joint venture between Wakefield-based Caddick Group and Harrogate’s Generate Land.

HOME NEWS Everton’s Walton Hall Park stadium project could create 1,000 homes Everton Football Club’s potential new 50,000-seat stadium in Walton Hall Park could help to create up to 1,000 new homes in the area, according to a feasibility report into the regeneration project. Volterra Partners says regeneration of the 130-acre park could include a new stadium as well as leisure, retail and restaurant space and up to 1,000 homes if it goes ahead. It could also retain the soccer centre, play area and sports pitches currently at the site. The report says the development would take up 40-50% of the green space but would provide better quality space for the new residents and create up to 1,250 jobs. Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson says: “This report, which is wholly independent, is in no way a plan or an agreement, but is an investigation

only into the potential of a project of this scale. The figures used within it are looking at the maximum possibilities. “We are listening to residents and we will continue to do so throughout the whole process.” Everton has not presented plans for Walton Hall Park and any work would be dependent on planning application approval, agreement of a delivery mechanism and raising the necessary finances for the development.

INDUST RY N EWS CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT GAINS PROBATE LICENSE A Liverpool-based chartered accountant has become the first in the region to be able to carry out probate work alongside its inheritance tax and trust and estate services. John Kerr Chartered Accountants gained a license to carry out probate work by regulator the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, when previously only solicitors were licensed to carry out probate. The license means the chartered accountant can now deal with the deceased’s property, money and possessions, which is often referred to as ‘administering estate’. David Glover, one of the firm’s partners, says: “This means that we can now administer estates and apply for probate, helping to take pressure off families at difficult and stressful times. This fits in with our strategy of offering integrated support to owner managed businesses and investors. “As well as looking after our clients’ accountancy, tax, pensions and investments, we are now further able to support the management of family wealth through the generation.”
CITY CENTRE OFFICE FOR PAUL CROWLEY & CO Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors is set to open a new office in the city centre as part of its plans to expand in 2015. The law firm, which already has offices Anfield and West Derby Village, will open the new office on Old Hall Street in the city’s business district early next year. An official launch event will be held once staff have moved in. Paul Crowley, senior partner, says: “During 2014 we took some time to evaluate the business and develop a strategic plan for the areas we want to grow in the New Year. Opening a city centre office is hugely exciting for us and will enable us to grow and develop the commercial side of the business as well as building on the success of the other areas we operate in. “Next year promises to be an exciting one for us and for the industry as a whole and I’m looking forward to seeing what it brings.”

AG E N T O F T H E F O R T N I G H T THE TEAM BEHIND THE BRANCH
NORTHWOOD WEST DERBY BRANCH OPENED IN FEBRUARY BRANCH SPECIALISES IN SALES AND LETTINGS Tell us a bit about your team: We all get along (well most of the time), which is the most important thing. As a family-run business which is independently owned and operated, we place a lot of emphasis on trust and integrity. Outside of work the team meets up socially for nights out, drinks and bowling etc. Events that involve any element of competition can be interesting as we have a lot of competitive people in the team they know who they are!
What would be your dream property to market? Our director, Peter Bellamy is an avid golfer and says this would have to be a luxury villa on an illustrious golfing resort; maybe Montego Bay or the Algarve?
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FORTHCOMING PLANS We will be undertaking a refurbishment of the branch early in the new year as we enter into our 10th year of trading. Obviously, longer term we have aspirations to continue to grow the business, increasing our lettings portfolio and sales market share. Montego Bay, Jamaica
What are your greatest strengths? Our high staff retention rate is probably our greatest strength. The team comprises long-serving, experienced and committed individuals who are totally service orientated. This allows us to reach out to and re-focus customers who have lost confidence or their enthusiasm for selling or letting their home.
What is the team’s greatest achievement? Probably the positive feedback we receive from our customers.

Advice from chartered accountants 0151 228 8977 Julia Casimo
Our Top Tips for surviving a tax investigation Don’t panic - Stay calm and find an experienced adviser. You need someone on your side who has experience resolving investigations and knows how the taxman operates. It is likely to be cheaper in the long run, too. Don't destroy the evidence - Getting rid of documents may lead HMRC to assume that you've something to hide. If you didn't keep records, be prepared to obtain replacements (such as bank statements) and to work with your tax adviser to make reasonable estimates and assumptions to fill any gaps. Seek clarification - If you don't understand why the taxman is asking certain questions - ask, there will usually be a reason. Don’t over-promise - If you cannot meet a deadline, explain the situation and agree a revised timescale. Missing deadlines can increase penalties and lead to formal demands for information. Never make assumptions - Don't assume, for example, that the taxman has made a mistake or is unaware of your offshore bank account. HMRC are now holds vast amounts of data and can obtain more from third parties in Britain and worldwide. It focuses its limited resources so if HMRC is investigating you, it is for a reason. If an error is found in your return, don't assume that that is all the taxman is interested in; it will want to check whether the error occurred in other years. Be honest - If there is something wrong with your tax return, tell HMRC upfront. Making a full disclosure of all relevant facts and explaining why things went wrong is essential. Failure to do so will lead to increased penalties (and possibly a criminal investigation) when the full story emerges. Be one step ahead/Keep control - Read through each draft response to the taxman carefully. If you think "HMRC are bound to ask me about x next", answer that question and provide supporting documents in your response. Being helpful and giving access to records can reduce penalties, as will making a full disclosure and meeting deadlines. Prepare thoroughly for meetings - Ask for an agenda and prepare carefully. You do not need to be present at meetings if you have a tax adviser acting – so this is a judgment call. During the meeting stay calm, answer the questions and say if you don't understand. If you do not know the answer to a question say you will find out – don’t guess. Check any meeting notes that HMRC provides as there can be misunderstandings. Let them know what amendments are needed as HMRC will rely on those notes if the matter goes to tribunal.
PAINTING & DECORATING SERVICES
High quality wallpaper hanging Painting Interior & exterior Domestic & commercial Building maintenance & repair work
Get mediation - If progress slows down, "alternative dispute resolution" (ADR) may help. ADR is a form of mediation which can resolve cases where positions have become entrenched (even when some information is unavailable or a formal appeal has been made against assessments). Mediation does not mean capitulation: compromises may be necessary on both sides to resolve the case and avoid an expensive tribunal hearing.

One Thing I’ve Yet to do in Liverpool... Sefton Park’s Palm House LAUREN TAYLOR creative learning officer, Liverpool Empire One thing I’ve not yet got round to doing is taking part in some of the fun events that take place in the Palm House at Liverpool’s Sefton Park. It’s such a beautiful piece of Victorian architecture; I love how different it can be each time you visit, depending on the season or even the time of day. They often hold wonderful events like salsa classes and jazz evenings there, which I keep meaning to get to but haven’t yet. I’d love to see a piece of theatre performed there at night – I think that would be really magical to see in the starlight. I‘ve promised myself I’ll get to the next one!
MY THING JESSICA WALKER sales assistant, Nook and Cranny
Although I am someone with a long established passion for interior environments, my interest in furniture restoration began just a few years ago when I inherited a number of well-loved antique pieces from a relative, and decided to give them a new lease of life. As this was a personal project, I was free to experiment with a number of colours and textures, whilst at the same time respecting the authenticity of each piece. The process involves stripping back each piece to its original form before experimenting with a number of different finishes to create new styles, and sometimes upcycling individual pieces to be put to new uses. From this original venture, I went on to develop a number of pieces for both myself and others. Most recently I have redeveloped an old writing desk for use as a vanity table, and restored an antique Queen Anne dining chair for my own home. Now, having studied interior design at university, my interest in the world of furnishings has expanded to a much wider knowledge that I hope will enable me to create more innovative pieces, for an audience outside of my friends and family, in the future. 58 Your Move

WISH LIST RIAD ERRAJI operations manager, Amanzi
It’s been a hectic period preparing for the opening of our new restaurant, Amanzi in Liverpool this month, so I’m really looking forward to getting the chance to focus completely on the family, rather than on work, on Christmas Day. My perfect Christmas involves spending time with my children and having all my family around me. This is why I’m opening the restaurant for my closest friends and family with a guest list of 50 on Christmas Day. I love entertaining and you can’t beat getting everybody together to celebrate over the holidays. Henry Winkler (the Fonz) came to one of my Christmas celebrations when he was starring in a pantomime in Liverpool and he’s great fun – he’s certainly one of my ideal festive guests. If he’s back in Liverpool this year, he knows he has a place on my guest list!

With his fair share of ups and downs, having beaten two brain tumours, the ‘People’s Tenor’ is now fighting fit and ready to take on the major cathedrals in the UK for his 'Candlelight Christmas' tour, including a performance at Liverpool Cathedral. TALENT
INTERVIEW BY AMELIA HEATHMAN
You're about to embark on your Candlelight Christmas tour. Are you excited about coming to Liverpool and singing in the cathedral? The tour is an idea that I've had for a few years, to play cathedrals around the UK. I know whenever I've visited these types of places in the past, when I walk into a large area like that the first thing I think is 'I'd love to sing a couple of notes in here'. To get the opportunity to perform in the UK’s most prestigious cathedrals and churches is something I’m really excited about. There's nothing more exhilarating for a singer than belting it out in a great big space like that. Liverpool Cathedral is probably the biggest. I sang there for 'Songs of Praise' back in about 2003, and I remember when I first arrived thinking 'crikey, this is huge!’. I have a real affinity with Liverpool as well because of constantly performing in the area, even in the days going back 20 years when I was singing in the clubs of Liverpool like Huyton Royal British Legion. I've always had a great time there and everyone's been really welcoming. So you've gone from Liverpool’s small clubs to the cathedral? And others in between. A couple of years ago we did a sell-out concert at Speke Hall and that was fantastic too. I also sang on the back of a ship at the Tall Ships event earlier this year, singing British standards like ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ and ‘Jerusalem’. That was a really great event. Do you still feel nervous about big tours and shows? Not really now. The only time I feel any kind of apprehension or nerves is if I don't feel well. If I've got a sore throat or a cold, then the apprehension starts to set in about whether I'll be able to sing ok. I don't really get nervous if everything's working as it should be, then I'm on stage and ‘wallop! You're having it!’. You're going to sing the Christmas song with the most requests – have you had any strange ones? What's your favourite Christmas song? 'Christmas in Smurfland' by Father Abraham and the Smurfs was requested. Needless to say, we won't be doing that! I really love 'Silent Night’, but the most requested song I’m going to do is 'O Holy Night'. It's really beautiful.
Do you have any special Christmas traditions? I don't really have any traditions; it's just what naturally happens. Normally on Christmas day I'll have family and friends round, basically whoever will come, so it's just a big gathering. We open our presents in the morning; I love to see people's faces when I give them a gift. Then we'll have dinner around 3pm, watch telly and play a few games. I do like to watch the Queen's Speech, I love it! Your tour coincides with a celebrity carol concert performance for Age UK. You seem to sing at a lot of charity events. Yeah, Age UK approached me a few months ago and asked me if I wanted to be involved and I said yes. It's a fantastic charity and I’m really looking forward to performing at St Paul’s Cathedral as it’ll be my first time there. I wouldn’t say I didn’t get any kind of personal reward from charity events prior to my illness, but certainly afterwards I now get a lot more personal satisfaction for doing things for other people. I think that doesn't just come with personal circumstance and illness, but as we progress in life we become more attuned to certain things and we mellow. In 2015, it will have been 15 years since you released your first album. How does it feel to reach such a milestone? 2015 is going to be a big year, concert touring wise. I think it will be the biggest that I’ve ever done, so yikes! I’m actually going to be doing a date in New Brighton at the Floral Pavillion in March. Specifically on this tour, we’re going to do smaller venues; I did a show in Japan where I just sang with a piano as opposed to with a 50piece orchestra and the fans enjoyed the fact it was more intimate and personal in a smaller venue. I like that that you can actually see the people’s faces you’re singing to. For 15 years I've been doing tours, year after year, in theatres, arenas and those types of venues and I just thought for this next period I'd rather go to places we've never visited before and do a more intimate type of performance where I can really involve the audience. What has been the most stand-out moment of your career in the past 15 years? Performing, for me, is where it’s at in terms of stand-out moments. One that does stand out is when I performed for the Emperor of Japan in the Imperial Palace and had dinner with him afterwards - that was quite surreal. We ended up talking about football, which was bizarre! He knew of Manchester United, they had a liking towards a football team called Urawa Reds. They are the Japanese version of United; they were in
exactly the same kit except in Japanese. I ended up singing at one of their games which was quite something actually. Also, singing the theme tune for Star Trek was brilliant too, for the new Enterprise series. I don’t really get to watch it nowadays but I loved it when I was a kid.
“I'VE ALWAYS VIEWED LIFE AND ANYTHING I'VE TAKEN ON, EVEN IF IT'S JUST A GAME OF TENNIS, AS WANTING TO BE THE BEST THAT I CAN BE.”
You've had a difficult few years, especially health wise. Is there anything in particular that keeps you going strong through the tough times? I think it’s just the nature of who I am that keeps me going. If you put health to one side, you don't get from being the son of a welder and having spent six years working 12-hour night shifts in a back street factory to becoming one of the bestselling classical artists in the world without any formal training, without being a driven lunatic. It’s that drive and mentality I have of saying 'I'm not letting this stop me; I'm just going to keep going’. That's the one thing that I’d say about anything in life; if you want something then you pursue it and go for it, keep your eye on the goal and keep driving towards it. If you don't make it then at least you can look in the mirror and say 'I gave it my best shot', and feel proud of yourself. I've always viewed life and anything I've taken on, even if it's just a game of tennis, as wanting to be the best that I can be. When I was ill I think that's one thing that got me through that period of time, saying I'm not letting this beat me.

a e f e A TIME FOR kGIVING j The countdown to Christmas is well underway and whilst it traditionally brings a time for sharing and catching up with friends and family, a number of appeals and campaigns have been launched across Liverpool to help those less fortunate. Here are just a few of the causes which will benefit from the time and donations of those looking to give a little:
WHITE CHRISTMAS LIVERPOOL The White Christmas Liverpool team is once again rallying support as it lines up a Christmas Day dinner and entertainment for pensioners across Merseyside and those who would otherwise be spending the day alone. This year’s festivities will take place at St George’s Hall, providing a special day for 150 guests, and organisers are currently appealing for volunteers and support. www.whitechristmasliverpool.co.uk
KIND CHRISTMAS APPEAL In its 39th year, Liverpool-based children’s charity KIND is calling for donations as it puts together food hampers and toy parcels for disadvantaged children and their families in the area. www.kind.org.uk
‘LIVERPOOL HEART’ SINGLE Everyone loves a Christmas song, so why not get behind the city’s own festive single and show support for the young unsung talent in the area as they work to achieve their creative potential. Unveiled in November, the single ‘Liverpool Heart’ features lead vocals from Lord Mayor, Councillor Erica Kemp and more than 200 local performers including upand-coming artists, bands and choirs. With proceeds going to the Liverpool Heartbeat charity, the single can be downloaded at liverpoolheart.wix.com/liverpool-heart
‘YOUR KINDNESS COULD KILL’ CAMPAIGN A campaign is underway to make sure festive donations are used to support vulnerable people in the best way possible. Supported by Citysafe, Liverpool Charity and Voluntary Services, Merseyside Police and City Central BID, ‘Your Kindness Could Kill’ is urging people to give donations via the campaign so that charities helping people on the streets will receive the funding, as opposed to handing change directly to beggars who may be vulnerable to addiction. Official collectors will be in the city centre every Thursday during the run up to Christmas.
FESTIVE DRIVE TO HELP HOMELESS IN MERSEYSIDE A drive to help the homeless and those who are sleeping rough across Merseyside has been launched by charities and volunteers in the run up to the festive season, as it brings the ‘busiest time’ for those in need of help. The Whitechapel Centre, a housing and homeless charity for the Liverpool region, which also runs the area’s ‘No Second Night Out’ helpline, has begun its ‘positive’ Christmas appeal, featuring pictures of Whitechapel Centre service users holding up signs demonstrating how the charity has helped them and what they have been able to achieve. Ruth McCaughley, fundraising manager at the Whitechapel Centre, says: “We wanted it to be a positive appeal. The centre helps people to make positive changes to their lives and this is what we wanted to show. “It’s lovely to see so many people collecting for us and getting involved because Christmas is our busiest time of year and when so many people will need the Whitechapel Centre’s help. “January is also a busy time for the centre as many relationships break down over the Christmas period and people can find themselves homeless as a result.” One way to help the Whitechapel Centre this Christmas, along with a number of other
local organisations supporting homeless and vulnerable people around the city, is by supporting the Liverpool Homeless Christmas Shoebox Appeal. The appeal was started just weeks ago by one woman, Vorny Redmond, and her friends and family. The idea is to donate shoeboxes filled with gifts, clothes and toiletries which can be handed to men, women and children sleeping rough in Liverpool every year. What started as a Facebook page has quickly received support from around 3,000 people in Merseyside pledging their help to provide shoeboxes. A number of designated drop off points for people to hand their shoeboxes in have been set up at organisations and businesses around the city, and a number of charities supporting vulnerable people are set to receive them. As for remaining shoeboxes once charities have received their share, Vorny says: “On 23 December we’re going to be taking to the streets dressed as Santa and elves and anyone who is sleeping rough, we’re going to hand deliver the boxes to them. I’m going to set up a meeting point and anyone who wants to get involved can do that”. “The main objective really is to put a smile on the faces of people who might not have that much to smile about.”
For up to date information about the appeal and how to get involved, visit www.facebook.com/liverpoolchristmasshoeboxappeal

NEWS
The former Blind School
What’s On FAMILY RESTAURANT PLANS FOR HISTORIC HOPE STREET BUILDING An historic building in Liverpool city centre could become home to a family pub and restaurant, as the owner of the site is said to be in talks with an operator. The former Blind School, on the corner of Hope Street and Hardman Street, was opened up to the public earlier this year when it hosted an art exhibition during the Liverpool Biennial and could soon be given a new life as a leisure space. The building’s owner, DBL Limited, which also runs the popular boutique Hope Street Hotel, has revealed talks with an operator who could potentially occupy the Grade II-listed building. Colin Williams, director at the Planning Studio, which has submitted a planning application to Liverpool City Council to demolish a 1970’s extension to the building on behalf of DBL Ltd, says: “A family pub/restaurant is showing considerable interest in a unit contained within the main wing to the front of the listed building fronting Hardman Street. The proposals by the interested party are being worked up by the other party and will become public in the fullness of time.” In 2012, DBL announced a £5 million plan to convert the building into serviced apartments with a café or restaurant space on the ground floor.
Giant ‘Dinoclaus’ puppet to roam the streets of Liverpool A giant will walk through the streets of Liverpool once again this Christmas, when a four-metre high dinosaur marionette named ‘Dinoclaus’ visits communities to hand out gifts and entertain the crowds. Royal de Luxe, the team behind the visit of the spectacular Grandma, Little Girl and Xolo the dog giants in the summer, has inspired a new mechanical puppet after the French company’s lead technician, Jean-Yves Aschard, visited the young people at the Everyman & Playhouse’s Creative Construction course. The students have teamed up with artist Sam Kent to create the giant dinosaur, which will visit communities around the city during the run up to the festive period. Specific dates and the route that Dinoclaus will take through Liverpool have yet to be unveiled by organisers of the event.
FROSTY FAIR TO BRING FESTIVE SPIRIT TO COMMERCIAL DISTRICT Liverpool’s commercial district will embrace the festive season this month when it plays host to the Fabulous Frost Fair. The 10-11 December event, taking place on the ground floor of No 4 St Paul’s Square and in the square itself, will offer Christmas essentials ranging from specialist gifts, cards, ribbon and gift wrap to festive food and drink. The event is part of the BID Comany’s Thursday and Alive After Five Christmas programme, and expected to attract visitors following the current Snowflake Trail which is underway as well as members of the surrounding business community. The Christmas spirit will also spread to St Nicholas Church on 10 December, when a lunchtime carol service with the Lord Mayor will be held. The Fabulous Frost Fair will be held from 11am until 4pm on 10 December, and 11am until 7pm on 11 December.

& Best for...
FESTIVE DELIGHTS Christmas food and drink are two of the many reasons why this time of year is so great. Feast your eyes on our pick of the Christmas specials Liverpool’s bars, cafes and eateries have to offer.
SEASONAL SPIRIT 81 LTD, Seel Street, L1 The mixologists at 81 LTD are offering something a little different to your standard mulled wine festive fare with a Rum & Gingerbread Swizzle. It features a seasonal shake-up of Flor De Cana four-year-old rum, Falernum, Cassis, gingerbread syrup, apple juice and lime.
TURKEY WITH A TWIST Rookwood Bar & ‘Cue, Back Colquitt Street, L1
If you’d rather put on a few pounds than a jumper to keep warm this festive season then look no further than Rookwood’s Fat Santa burger. Buttermilk fried turkey, stuffing, smoked bacon, camembert and cranberry gravy all make up what must be the most delectable of all the Christmas burgers out there and the size of it means it is, without a doubt, not for the faint-hearted.
CHRISTMAS IN A CUP Central Perk, Hatton Garden, L3
The ‘Friends’ favourite, Central Perk is delivering an alternative to the Christmas coffee blend with a festive tea. The brew is a delicious blend of cardamom, cinnamon and spices to jazz up the traditional breakfast leaves, and needless to say you will not need sugar to sweeten it.
MOWGLI STREET FOOD Bold Street, L1 I arrived at Mowgli drenched by the midday rain and was welcomed in by its calm interior. There is nothing explicitly Indian about the décor, save the beautiful Haveli-style door that greets you on the inside. It is light and airy with ropes that hang throughout, creating a natural earthy feel. There was a gentle buzz in the atmosphere created by a varied clientele. From nattering old ladies to yummy mummies, builders taking a break and hungry hipsters, Mowgli seems to appeal to people from all walks of life. The menu is plentiful but not overwhelming, grouped into sections to help you pick out what you fancy. But this was no easy feat, as every item jumped off the page making my stomach growl. With help from the restaurant's passionate and insightful owner, my lunch date and I decided to order a range of dishes and share them between us in a tapas style. Their reasonable price (the majority between £3
REVIEW BY JENNIFER CHAMBERLAIN
and £7) makes this a feasible option. First to arrive was the Gunpowder Chicken and the Fenugreek Kissed Fries. The meat was succulent and perfectly flavoured with ginger, garlic and garamasala. The fries were not so much fries as bite sized potatoes, kissed indeed with spice staples such as turmeric and fenugreek. Both dishes, delivered in simple, metal containers à la street food, were audibly delicious. Next we sampled the Yoghurt Chat Bombs which are an absolute must at Mowgli. Unlike anything I've ever tasted, these mini poppadum-esque pockets filled with spiced yoghurt, chickpeas, coriander and mint were a complete treat. Whilst full of flavour, the freshness of the yoghurt cleansed the palate ready for the next plate. Last but by no means least came the star of the show: the Office Worker's Tiffin.
This intriguing item is a nod to lunch time in cities like Mumbai, where food is delivered from home to work in a multi-tiered tin. Mowgli aims to introduce this trend to Liverpool and that's not the only novelty - you don't choose what you eat! For unfussy foodies, this is an exciting concept. I dissembled the box to discover what 'mother' had picked: an anise infused lamb curry, a refreshing lemongrass and ginger chicken curry and a tomato based chickpea dish that certainly packed a punch, all accompanied by some good old basmati rice. It was a scrumptious surprise! Situated perfectly amid the independent eateries of Bold Street, Mowgli is a new Indian restaurant that takes us back to basics. It marks an exciting departure from the anglicised Chicken Tikka Masala into the realm of the authentic, adopting an approach that is as fresh and bold as its ingredients.

NATIVITY PARADE LIGHTS UP CITY CENTRE
The Keating family
T
he Bishop of Liverpool, donkeys and carol singers led a parade through city centre streets as the first ‘Festive Thursday’ took place. The parade also featured Mary and Joseph, the three wise men on real camels, angels and shepherds, who travelled through the city before lighting up a nativity scene at the Church Street Christmas tree. Crowds gathered to hear a blessing from the Bishop of Liverpool, Paul Bayes and a gospel choir performance during the event. The parade was then followed by Jack Frost and his sprites, as they entertained guests as part of the Snowflake Trail Christmas treasure hunt while projections were beamed onto Marks & Spencer. The event marked the start of a series of Thursday night festivities planned for the countdown to Christmas.
