A Good Year to Buy/Sell???

Is 2015 going to be a good year? we think so, the industry had a buoyant first half of 2014 followed by a significantly quieter second half of the year. The Government has been aware the market had slowed and that an impending election may leave people biding their time to see who wins. To keep the housing market stimulated they have introduced new stamp duty rules which will make a massive difference at all

purchase prices. Will this help the housing market replicate early last year? I think so and early signs in January in both branches of Abode show that buyer activity is back where it was. This is a great sign for the coming year and I would definitely encourage those buying or selling to contact us immediately to register or to get us out for a free market appraisal.

What a night for us, we did the double The last time there was a double in Liverpool it was 1989!

In all seriousness to win Best Estate Agency for Customer Service and Best Lettings Agency for Customer Service in my home city within 3 years of starting this business is phenomenal. We are chuffed. People thought I was slightly mad to open an estate agents in the middle of a recession but I knew what we had to do to be the best, and now our hard work and endeavour has got us there. The award is a

reflection of our ambition to be different to all other agents. This was an ambition of mine and was born out of frustration. The frustration of a property developer and landlord, who regularly used estate agents and wasn’t happy with service I was getting. So much so, I knew I could do it better and decided to open my own Estate Agents. Knowing and understanding what customers want is fundamental to where we are today. I want to thank all of our customers, for initially daring to choose a different agent with a different approach, and a special mention for all those who’ve recommended us to their friends and family. I also want to say a big thank you to all our staff, both past and present, from our apprentices to our management team, you’ve all contributed in your own way and we are extremely grateful. David Burns Owner, Abode

So bring on 2015, a year in which we are looking forward to building on our success of the last 12 months.

And with entries now open ahead of this year’s event, which will once again take place within the stunning setting of Lutyen’s Crypt at Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, what better time to catch up with the 2014 winners to find out how they’ve made the best of their awards success.

BEST ESTATE AGENT FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE ABODE (CROSBY)

BEST PROPERTY LAW FIRM MSB SOLICITORS

Abode enjoyed a hugely successful night at the 2014 Your Move Property Awards, with winning the Best Estate Agency for Customer Service being one of two victories on the night. Since the Crosby office achieved the accolade, Abode owner David Burns says there’s been a focus on using the award-winning status to raise the branch’s profile. “The award is recognition for our understanding of what customers want,” says David. “Since winning the award we have tried to get the fact we’re number one for customer service out there as much as possible.”

Having won in two previous years, the team at MSB Solicitors was “delighted” to pick up the prize for Best Property Law Firm once again in 2014. On the third time round, MSB’s award-winning status has continued to provide a benefit to the firm. “As soon as we won the award we wasted no time in promoting it on our website, emails and marketing material,” says managing partner Paul Bibby. “It is a fantastic asset in terms of converting new business as it gives confidence to new clients and reassurance to all our old ones.”

SHOW HOME OF THE YEAR MACBRYDE HOMES

BEST AFFORDABLE HOME PLUS DANE GROUP

Judges picked Macbryde Homes’ Osborne House show home, within its Sandfield Park based development The Grove, as the winner. Reflecting on the victory the developer’s creative director, Ruth Macbryde, says: “We were delighted to win the best show home award for Osborne House. We always knew we were creating something special, but to receive this recognition means a lot to us. “It has furthered our brand awareness and renewed our profile in the Liverpool market place.”

Winning the Best Affordable Home accolade is said to have directly impacted on the ongoing success of Plus Dane Group’s Quarry Brook development in Kirkby. According to Sandy Kelly, head of HomesHub at Plus Dane Group: “We were delighted that our Quarry Brook development won the 'Best Affordable Home' award at the Your Move Property Awards in November, and received recognition for bringing this site back into use and working with partners to deliver an excellent product. “Since winning the award we have taken numerous reservations and now have just two properties available for sale.”

BEST NEW HOME COUNTRYSIDE

BEST ESTATE AGENT WEBSITE ANDREW LOUIS

Developer Countryside is so pleased with the impact the Best New Home title has had on its winning property the Ashwell at The Avenue, Norris Green Village that it’s already making plans for the 2015 awards. Regional sales and marketing director, Peter Vella says the accolade has given The Avenue a “real mark of recognition of quality” and has helped sales at the site to achieve their strongest performance so far. “The Your Move Property Awards really seeks out the very best in the property market, encouraging house builders to continually up their game,” says Peter. “The 2015 awards will definitely be one to watch for Countryside as we get ready to launch new sites across Merseyside over the next two years.”

In 2014 this award went to Andrew Louis, and it’s an accolade which managing director Louis Anastasiou says was “testament to our commitment to the industry on a local level”. The Liverpool agent, which had launched a new website complete with a service allowing tenants to report problems online 24/7, was keen to shout about its success following the win, and Louis adds: “We’ve sent a news release and notified our clients that we’ve won the award.” He insists the firm will “never be complacent” despite its awards recognition , and is looking forward to continuing its ongoing process of developing its online communication.

BEST COMMERCIAL AGENT HITCHCOCK WRIGHT & PARTNERS

REGENERATION AWARD HARCOURT DEVELOPMENTS

Hitchcock Wright & Partners has been making the most of being singled out as the best in the city. “"We fully intend to build on the success of the past 12 months to continue to provide advice to clients across the retail and commercial sectors," says Matt Kerrigan, partner, Hitchcock Wright and Partners. "We are currently involved with a number of key projects in the city, and hope to see our hard work coming to fruition in 2015. "We are delighted to have received industry recognition at the Your Move Awards. We hope to be recognised again in 2015."

Harcourt Developments’ transformation of Stanley Dock is still ongoing, with work now underway to create residential properties within the former Tobacco Warehouse. Meanwhile the completed first phase, which has brought the Titanic Hotel and its Rum Warehouse event space to the city, has been achieving much success. After receiving the Regeneration Award for the hotel complex, Harcourt Developments director, Pat Power says the accolade has raised the “awareness of the project in the city”. Adding that the Stanley Dock regeneration has benefitted from the exposure in Your Move as a result, future awards entries may be on the horizon. “We look forward to continuing our association with the magazine and the awards,” he says.

BEST LETTING AGENCY ABODE (ALLERTON)

BEST COMMERCIAL SCHEME BRUNTWOOD

Having won a second award on the night, this time for its Allerton Road branch, Abode has since been keen to spread the word about its success and, according to company owner David Burns, it’s already paying off. “We’ve been featuring editorials in all papers we advertise in and we’ve been telling all our customers,” he says. “The award win raises our profile and customers with no experience of Abode are more inclined to try us, based on our win.”

Winning the Best Commercial Scheme prize for the Cotton Quarter has helped Bruntwood to shine the spotlight on its commercial district development. "Since winning the award people are recognising the Cotton Quarter as a creative destination within Liverpool city centre,” says the firm’s head of property, Colin Forshaw. “New and existing customers have embraced the concept of the development, which is moving along at a tremendous pace.”

PROPERTY APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR LIAM SARGEANT (REDROW) Redrow apprentice Liam Sargeant says the accolade has “opened up lots of different career building and fun opportunities”. “Winning the award is starting to have a really positive influence on my career,” says Liam. “Not only has it helped me to have a more professional approach towards construction, it’s also led to me being offered a trainee assistant site manager position with Redrow.” His victory has also encouraged him to enter further competitions, and he adds: “This year I’ll be joining the Brathay Apprentice Challenge which see teams of apprentices take part in awareness raising activities and community projects. It’s a big thing for apprentices, demanding a variety of skills and it culminates in a grand final in the Lake District.”

Construction underway on major waterfront apartments scheme Work is now underway to build a £50m luxury scheme on Liverpool’s waterfront, which is expected to “set the benchmark for city centre apartment living”. The construction phase of Neptune Investments’ Baltic Village development, which will feature 324 apartments available for rent across three blocks, along with 360 car parking spaces and 7,500 sq ft of retail and leisure space, has now begun and the scheme is due to be completed between June and September 2016. Neptune Investments is carrying out the project, which is located at the threshold of the waterfront, Liverpool ONE and the city’s Baltic Triangle, with its own funds and a £24m funding package from HSBC. It says the scheme will provide “an important option for those looking for accommodation in this part of Liverpool, which is not only a convenient position to live, but also a prestigious one in context of the Liverpool city centre market”. The mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments, which is being built by main contractor Balfour Beatty Construction, will also benefit from facilities including a hoteltype concierge, a residents’ lounge, lobby, gym, and meeting and event rooms. Alastair Shepherd, director of Falconer Chester Hall, the architect behind the scheme, says the development will “reflect the feeling of a boutique hotel” and adds: “Liverpool is forging ahead at a pace now and this scheme, despite complexities caused by the existing structure, will set the benchmark for city centre apartment living.” Once completed, the scheme will be managed by Parla Living, a subsidiary of Neptune Investments.

The new Baltic Village Development

CHanCery House Development brings 37 apartments to tHe market A scheme to convert Liverpool city centre’s historic Chancery House into 37 new apartments will be brought to the market by City Residential. Following recent planning approval for the Paradise Street development, between Liverpool ONE and the Baltic Triangle, the agent has been solely appointed to sell the new homes. A conversion of the existing grade II listed building, will also incorporate an extension of the current car park as well as a roof top

addition to provide penthouse properties. Phil Hartley-Chambers, director at City Residential, says: “City Residential is thrilled to have been appointed to sell the scheme on behalf of our client. We have been working with them for the last 12 months to assist in creating a truly spectacular scheme and we expect interest levels to be high in this unique offering.” For further information contact City Residential on 0151 231 6100.

MAJOR HOPE STREET INVESTMENT TO GO UNDER THE HAMMER A major freehold residential investment on Liverpool’s iconic Hope Street is set to be a star attraction of Sutton Kersh’s February auction. The Victorian middle terrace property in the heart of the city’s university quarter has been converted to provide 10 letting rooms over three floors. Fully let, it currently generates income of more than £52,000 per annum. An additional basement at the property, which has a guide price of £475,000 to £500,000, also offers the potential to create a further two or three rooms which would increase the income to £62,000. Other residential lots on offer at the 12 February sale, which will take place at the Liverpool City Centre Marriott Hotel, include a vacant extended four-bedroom detached house in Wavertree with a guide price of £165,000 plus. With a total of 85 lots lined up for the forthcoming event Cathy Holt, joint head of auctions at Sutton Kersh, says: “The February catalogue provides a range of opportunities at guide prices to suit all budgets and should get our 2015 auction campaign off to a flying start.” The full catalogue is online at www.suttonkersh.co.uk/auctions-property.

STRONG DEMAND EXPECTED FOR NEW SOUTH LIVERPOOL HOMES Countrywide Land & New Homes expects strong demand for 10 town house properties in a new Mossley Hill development, as the opening of a show home nears.

First reservations at Radley Park homes The first reservations have been secured for a new housing development at Radley Park, St Helens, after a show home opened in December. Developer St. Modwen Homes has recorded ‘very strong interest’ in the new development with buyers reserving homes during the first phase of construction. Initially 39 homes will be built at the site comprising two-bedroom mews, three-bedroom semi-detached and three and fourbedroom detached properties. Further stages will see a further 122 family homes built. Nick Whittingham, land director at St. Modwen, says: "The opening of the show home was a fantastic opportunity for potential buyers to find out more about the Radley Park development, which will bring much needed family homes to an area of St Helens that is currently undergoing a great transformation. “We have now had some reservations made at Radley Park and there is very strong interest in the properties." The first homes in the scheme were completed for occupation before Christmas and the entire development will be completed by 2018. The homes will be available under the government’s Help to Buy scheme, which allows purchasers to pay a 5% deposit on a home with the help of a 20% loan. For more information visit www.stmodwenhomes.co.uk. 56 Your Move

Countrywide has teamed up with Woodoak Developments to sell the row of four-bedroom, three-storey new-build town houses and a show home will open soon to highlight the interior designs available to prospective buyers. Work is currently underway at the Green Lane site, which is located in a popular area of South Liverpool. The estate agent will sell the properties through Entwistle Green’s Old Swan branch and Countrywide business development manager Tim Kay says the location and price of the homes will appeal to buyers. Although a specific launch date for the show home is still to be confirmed, Tim says: “The developer has a great reputation in South Liverpool and these homes are competitively priced and available to a high specification. We have already experienced high demand for the properties and we are anticipating plenty of interest in the next few weeks as the show home opens.” The homes are available carpeted and with full appliances, while bespoke interior packages are available to buyers. For more information contact the Entwistle Green Old Swan branch on 01512 680 585.

LIFESTYLE Living & working West Derby Village is a mere 20 minutes’ drive to Liverpool city centre, making it a definite choice for professionals wanting to move away from the city but still be close to Liverpool for work. The M62 is within easy distance, so working in Manchester is accessible, as it is just over an hour’s drive away depending on traffic. Broad Green station is 1.7 miles away from the village and offers free park and ride facilities, with trains to Liverpool Lime Street, Warrington and Manchester which are 15 minutes, 35 minutes, and 49 minutes away respectively by direct service.

What the residents say

Alan (Butcher)

I live in a cottage in the middle of the village and I’ve lived in West Derby for about 40 years. It’s a great area; the park, the pubs and the people are three good reasons to live here.

I live in a semi-detached house with my daughter. The bus routes are great to and from the village, so it’s easy to travel if you don’t have a car like I do. I also love Croxteth Park and enjoy walking my dog there.

I’ve lived in West Derby all my life. Croxteth Park is great and a lot of my friends still live round here. I like that it’s close to Liverpool, and the area has good schools too. I can’t think of any improvements for the area, except maybe more parks and areas for children.

There is very much a community feel to living in West Derby Village, which is what I enjoy about the place. All that needs to change about the area is there needs to be less betting shops.

West Derby is a great friendly and family area. I’ve lived here for about 45 years and it’s a really nice place to be.

Recognised as one of the most exceptional musicians of his generation, Vasily Petrenko has taken Liverpool into his heart since he came to the region in 2006. A stalwart of musical excellence, his role as chief conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic is sure to be a safe pair of hands to guide the orchestra as it celebrates its 175th anniversary. From opera to city regeneration, we spoke to the maestro about what’s on the horizon for 2015 and why an education in classical music has helped to inspire our city’s budding musicians.

TALENT

INTERVIEW BY SOPHIE LOCKETT

This year it’s the 175th anniversary of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. How important is it to you that you’re there as it reaches this important milestone? It’s a major anniversary for the orchestra and for the society. It’s a big privilege to be with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic at this time and to celebrate with the city, musicians and spectators. We’ve planned a lot of great things concerts, events, surprises, everything! What can we expect from the anniversary performance? A celebration! We are trying to reconstruct the history, so pieces performed in Liverpool which were UK or world premieres, and reconstruct historical concepts. We have amazing archives and we can see the programmes of the concerts from over 100 years ago and replicate them. There was a massive tradition of doing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and we’ve brought this as one of the pieces which was a stamp for Liverpool. Mendelssohn’s ‘Walpurgisnacht’ is another piece which Mendelssohn actually promoted by himself when he visited Liverpool. There’s historical context and also modern context because both of the pieces are some of the most popular in history. What is it about the Philharmonic and the city itself that’s special to you? It’s an amazing city; it’s perhaps the most creative city I’ve ever experienced. It’s filled with music and every Friday night if you walk down the street almost anywhere you can hear a live band playing. There is nowhere else where you can see that. The spirit of the people is very open minded and passionate. In that sense it’s quite close to the mentality in St Petersburg. People have the habit of helping each other because the city in the last decade was almost in constant crisis. People think it’s normal to help their neighbour because the next morning, you might need help. It’s a city that really feels like a family and it’s the same with the Philharmonic. They are looking for their excellence on a day-by-day basis, with improvements in musical skills and in development. We are so glad that the hall is being refurbished and we have opened the main auditorium. It’s like a family between the orchestra, society, conductors, and management. Everybody works together to make life better.

You mentioned improvements and changes to the Philharmonic. Is a constant sense of change and improvement within the building and orchestra itself something that excites you? For me stagnation is not acceptable. There needs to be progress all the time and I’m trying to avoid complacency in the band as much as possible so we are always looking at where we can do things better. Actually the city itself over the last eight or nine years has improved a lot, especially centrally and now the area around Hope Street is developing with so many new buildings. I think the city is on the way up. It’s not easy due to the economic situation but everybody’s trying. You trained with a lot of very wellrespected musicians. Is there anybody who particularly stands out as an inspiration for you? I have many, from Georg Solti and Leonard Bernstein to Salonen and Jansons. There are so many great musicians and conductors and you learn from everyone. What I was trying to do by visiting a lot of rehearsals and concerts in St Petersburg, in Mariinsky Theatre or in Philharmonic Hall, is to pick the best from every experience and every maestro. Often it’s important to see what’s bad, to see what you don’t need to have. This week I’ve been with the Chicago Symphony and I’ve learned a lot. I think being a conductor is a never-ending educational process.

“It’s an amazing city. If you walk down the street almost anywhere you can hear a live band playing.” You’ve worked on both the orchestral side and opera. Do you have a preference? I would like to have 50/50 but so far I’m doing a lot of orchestral concerts and less opera than I would like. Opera takes so much preparation time and having two orchestras as a chief conductor, it’s difficult to find enough time. Liverpool has a massive tradition for the Philharmonic and to listen to classical music but for opera, almost none.

Is that something that you would like to see in the city? I would love to but it depends on the audience. I think it’s a matter of marketing, tradition and education. A lot of people think opera is for snobs but it isn’t, especially nowadays. The rules have changed so much and it’s much more democratic than it used to be. You’ve done a lot of work with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and with young musicians. Is it important to keep classical music going and people enjoying it at a young age? Of course, otherwise in 10 or 15 years we will have no audience. I’m doing as much as I can with young musicians and helping people to discover classical music. That’s why the project ‘In Harmony’ was organised in Liverpool. This project is so important and we’re so glad that it’s been extended for further years. It’s great for the community in West Everton, it’s unbelievable. You can see how the lives of the local people have improved. Would you like to see the project, which uses music-making to improve wellbeing and skills, extended across the city? I would like to see a scheme like that everywhere! In countries like Venezuela, for instance, or China similar projects are extended to almost state level and in schools. It’s like in a football club where you have your academy and hope that it’ll produce magnificent players.

& Best for...

BURRITOS The burrito is starting to take over as the king of Mexican cuisine. As well as being a popular choice amongst restaurant menus, it has also taken centre stage in a range of eateries and takeaways which are dedicated to the versatile and flavour-packed wrap. We’ve scoured the city for three of the best.

TASTE OF CALIFORNIA Tortilla, Lord Street, L2 Choose every part of a Californianstyle burrito at Tortilla, from which meat you want to whether you fancy rice, peppers and onions or beans inside. Top with salsa, guacamole or sour cream to make your burrito exactly to your taste. Made fresh in-house on a daily basis, you can even have a ‘naked burrito’ all the flavour without the bread.

AUTHENTIC FEAST Lucha Libre, Wood Street, L1 Lucha Libre promises authentic Mexican street food without the donkeys or sombreros, and the menu consists of classic food with a twist, from quesadillas to chicken and chorizo empanadas. The Cali Steak burrito is the dream, packed with marinated steak, caramelised onions, cheese, guacamole, sour cream and lettuce served with flavoursome sweet potato fries.

TASTY TRIMMINGS The Tavern Company, Smithdown Road, L15 Marketing itself as Liverpool’s first Mexican and American BBQ, the family-owned restaurant has been the recipient of several awards. Its beef chilli burritos are baked in sweet chilli salsa and bubbling with cheese with your choice of filling. They are then topped with sour cream and served alongside mushroom rice and refried beans.

KABINETT

2A Myrtle Street, L7 7DP Hope Street and its immediate surroundings are regarded as a haven for foodies, home to popular restaurants and a growing cafe and bar scene. The recently opened Kabinett not only provides another new establishment for the area, but also a new offering to its already diverse food and drink selection as it specialises in wine and cheese. Tucked away in the basement of a former Liverpool John Moores University art building on Myrtle Street, Kabinett’s exterior displays little more than its neon-lit name to give it away. Step inside though, and its cosy, continental feel is a fitting match for its menu. My partner and I visited during a cold Sunday afternoon, when its warming decor featuring exposed bricks, wooden fixtures and leather sofas provided a welcoming environment, as did the friendly staff. We took our seats and browsed the menu. The food offering was kept simple with a small but diverse selection of cheeses and cured meats, and the option of picking two choices for a small plate (£6) or four options for a big

REVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

plate (£14). Sharing a big plate between us, we carefully deliberated over our allimportant four choices. Thankfully the menu provided a brief hint of the items’ flavours to guide us. As we’re both fans of strong cheeses, we settled on the Cheddar Barbers 1883, described as “richer than another man’s fruitcake”, and the Stilton blue which promised “sweet, smelly heaven”. We added sliced chorizo and jamon Serrano to the mix, and ordered a portion of Boscaiola olives (£3) for good measure. Our customised platter arrived with chilli jam and chunks of crusty fresh bread which were served deliciously warm. All four choices were full of flavour and the cured meats tasted authentic, while the Stilton blue stood out with its strong and creamy taste. The chilli jam also complimented both cheeses perfectly, providing a spicy but sweet kick. As for Kabinett’s drinks menu, this was far more extensive. It seemingly

offered a wine for every taste and mood, and again helpfully described the flavours for anyone who isn’t a connoisseur. On the lookout for a more straightforward beverage though, my partner picked a Brooklyn Lager (£4.50) from the selection of beers, spirits and soft drinks, whilst the cocktail range caught my eye. From the choice of classics (£7) to ‘Kabinett minister originals’ (£8) I chose one of my favourites, the Mojito, which was refreshing as always and came with a dark rum float providing a more intense flavour. We left Kabinett feeling satisfyingly full from our big plate of cheese and meats, which alternatively would have been perfect to share as a sociable snack with a couple more people, yet we were keen to return and further explore its broad selection of drinks. With Hope Street on its doorstep, Kabinett is perfectly placed for a pre or posttheatre visit, and its quirky cocktails are ideal for a lively evening away from the bustle of the city’s main night spots.

L I F E S T Y L E L AT E S T LIVERPOOL SET FOR BIGGEST GLOBAL SCOUSE DAY Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs, Virgin Trains and over 50 Liverpool restaurants are planning events to mark the largest Global Scouse Day celebration ever. On 28 February, Global Scouse Day will see the stew served across Liverpool in more than 50 restaurants to honour the local dish. Virgin Trains will serve Scouse on its Liverpool routes, while Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs have signed up to support the event. Meanwhile, eateries including the Museum of Liverpool café and the Bluecoat will serve their own version of scouse, with £1 from every sale going to support homeless charity, the Whitechapel Centre. A number of venues have organised ‘Scouse Off ’ competitions, and Berry and Rye will also host a scouse cocktail competition for the second year running. Laura Worthington, who has organised many of the Global Scouse Day events, says: “Last year we had 50 restaurants but we’re hoping for a lot more this year. “Scouse used to be a dish that people would gather round and eat and it used to be a community thing. That’s what we’re aiming for. This year it’s really going to have a lot more presence in the city, which is fantastic.” Global Scouse Day was founded by Graham Hughes, who made headlines when he became a Guinness World Record holder for visiting every country in the world without flying. His travels inspired him to celebrate Scouse culture across the planet by launching the celebration of the local dish.

The series aims to rekindle the spirit of the iconic Everyman Theatre and other city centre venues in the 1960s and will have an open-mic section for guests to get involved. Alan Smith, general manager at St George’s Hall, says: “The hall is delighted to be able to offer the intimate evenings of folk music and poetry in the Catacomb Galleries of St George’s Hall. NEWS

The former court on Victoria Street is currently being transformed

A new community cinema is set to launch on Victoria Street in the coming months, as a transformation of the former magistrates court building is currently underway. As part of its ongoing Small Cinema project, which aims to explore what cinemas used to be, arts collective Re-Dock is currently developing the permanent facility, which will be hosted by Creative Space Team Ltd, with the help of contributed materials, skills and volunteer time. With support being received from the BFI (British Film Institute) for the cinema’s film programme, the venue will provide a platform for local artists and filmmakers but will also screen a diverse range of films said to be “different to anything on offer at bigger cinemas”. Sam Meech, co-director at Re-Dock, says: “Whilst the seeds of the project were sown a while back, the hard work has only just begun. Right now we're pulling people and materials

together, and working with local film programmers to put together an opening season of films. We'll begin building in a week or so, and we'll have it done by the end of February and begin screening in March with the Food For Real film festival. It's ambitious but I think we'll do it. “The programming team we've pulled together is so diverse - they all have their own take on cinema. People can expect some really interesting and powerful independent film programming - from documentaries about global issues through to European cinema, silent film, cult horror, artists’ film and classic cinema. You'll also be able to see some of the best films you missed at the cinema – including sleeper hits and those films that got a limited initial release.” The team is aiming to create a “small, functional, volunteer-run, sustainable facility” following a similar model to the successful

Project underway to create Liverpool community cinema Cube in Bristol or Star and Shadow in Newcastle. So far, it’s said to have attracted lots of interest and support, with donations of timber, paint, tools and cables and the offer of help from skilled joiners and people wanting to be a part of the initiative. Sam adds: “We still need a fair bit of timber for the seating rake but we're getting there. We're also still on the hunt for a fairy godmother to sponsor a projector and sound system, but who knows - maybe we can crowdfund that.” Meanwhile the Re-Dock team is also creating a community cinema project at a former church in St Helens, and has already achieved a successful project in Manchester’s Moston area.
