EDITOR’S LETTER With the launch of Liverpool City Council’s controversial landlord licensing scheme approaching this spring, we take a closer look at the impact it’ll have on our local property industry. In this issue of Your Move, our Hot Topic brings together expert agents and the council representatives behind the initiative to debate how it’ll work and the effects it’ll have. Plus we’ve scoured the streets of Aigburth to find out what it has to offer for the city’s house hunters, and comedian Mark Watson took time out to chat to Your Move as he prepares to bring his latest show, ‘Flaws’ to the city. If that’s not enough, we’ve also got pages packed with news, events and highlights of the city’s shops and food and drink offering. Enjoy!

A Good Year to Buy/Sell???
Is 2015 going to be a good year? we think so, the industry had a buoyant first half of 2014 followed by a significantly quieter second half of the year. The Government has been aware the market had slowed and that an impending election may leave people biding their time to see who wins. To keep the housing market stimulated they have introduced new stamp duty rules which will make a massive difference at all
purchase prices. Will this help the housing market replicate early last year? I think so and early signs in January in both branches of Abode show that buyer activity is back where it was. This is a great sign for the coming year and I would definitely encourage those buying or selling to contact us immediately to register or to get us out for a free market appraisal.
What a night for us, we did the double The last time there was a double in Liverpool it was 1989!
In all seriousness to win Best Estate Agency for Customer Service and Best Lettings Agency for Customer Service in my home city within 3 years of starting this business is phenomenal. We are chuffed. People thought I was slightly mad to open an estate agents in the middle of a recession but I knew what we had to do to be the best, and now our hard work and endeavour has got us there. The award is a
reflection of our ambition to be different to all other agents. This was an ambition of mine and was born out of frustration. The frustration of a property developer and landlord, who regularly used estate agents and wasn’t happy with service I was getting. So much so, I knew I could do it better and decided to open my own Estate Agents. Knowing and understanding what customers want is fundamental to where we are today. I want to thank all of our customers, for initially daring to choose a different agent with a different approach, and a special mention for all those who’ve recommended us to their friends and family. I also want to say a big thank you to all our staff, both past and present, from our apprentices to our management team, you’ve all contributed in your own way and we are extremely grateful. David Burns Owner, Abode
So bring on 2015, a year in which we are looking forward to building on our success of the last 12 months.

Advice from chartered accountants 0151 228 8977 Julia Casimo
Child Benefit Charges start to bite Q: I am self-employed with profits of about £60,000 a year, my partner and I have three young children and we currently receive child benefit of almost £50 a week. My partner does not work. I’ve just seen my tax calculation for last year and realise I must pay back all of the Child Benefit we received last year - £2500! What can I do about this? A: The Institute for Fiscal Studies has estimated that about 1.2 million families are affected by the changes to Child Benefit which came into effect in January 2013. Families such as yours, where one parent, or partner, earns more than £50,000 are subject to an income tax charge. This charge, as you have just noticed, is part of your ‘selfassessment’ tax bill and is called the ‘High Income Child Benefit Charge’. Child Benefit is clawed back gradually where one parent, or partner, earns more than £50,000 a year and withdrawn entirely from those families where someone earns more than £60,000 a year. The answer to your question as to what you can do about this for last year – is not much I’m afraid. You will need to pay the Child Benefit back. However, there could be some solutions going forward. The way the rules stand at present means that there may be a number of ways of preserving the benefit, at least partially. For a business such as yours, a Limited Company will automatically reduce your personal taxable income. A Limited Company also allows you to time your dividends, giving you a much greater level of control over your personal income. Involving your partner in the business may also be an option. Assuming he, or she, could assist you in some way, paying your partner a small salary out of your profits would reduce your taxable income. Similarly, ensuring that any investment income is in your partner’s name may also help. Finally, pension contributions become even more attractive. Not only do pension contributions save income tax and national insurance, they also reduce your taxable income upon which the Child Benefit Charge is based. My advice is to speak to a suitably qualified accountant as soon as possible and endeavour to get something in place for the current tax year before it is too late!

HOT TOPIC
AOB) Following the Mayoral elections, the Mayor signed that pledge to say it’s extremely important that we need to tackle rogue landlords in the city. We then had to look at how we could achieve this. That’s when we began discussing the idea of a licensing scheme, and how one could be implemented. You could have selective licensing where you target one or two wards, but then how does that affect the other wards? And given that we have a private rental sector quite heavily within this city and it’s spread across the city, we thought the most effective way to do it was to do a citywide licensing scheme because we have no idea who the landlords are in this city. We can estimate that there’s around about 50,000 private rental properties in the city but we have no idea who those landlords are and we’ve got no way of communicating with them. We know who our really good landlords are who have joined our CLASS system, (the accredited landlord licensing scheme) and we can engage with them. But the only way we will be able to tackle this is if we know who all the landlords are, so that’s why we decided to go for a citywide licensing scheme. LA) We’re in total agreement with this and we’re advocates of regulations and offering a good standard of accommodation and maintaining that, but the process in our view is all wrong and it’s not just the implication of the licences and the fee; my biggest concern is the conditions attached to the licence schemes. We’ve been in consultation with Liverpool City Council for nearly seven months and I don’t think you’re listening. You’re not taking on board what we’re saying. We, as a group of licensed agents, probably represent around 20% of the stock in Liverpool city, and we’ve given you a proposal, we’ve not received a response on our proposal. This was given six months ago. We work in the sector, we’re on the front line – work with us. AOB) We did set up a landlord advisory group that I chair. We’ve got landlords from across the city, we’ve got the North West Landlords Association on that, we’ve got the National Landlords Association on that as well as a number of other landlords and agents that sit on that group and we have discussed this process right the way through. LA) Are they licensed agents? AOB) Yes, and they have come forward with ideas and that’s why things have changed. They highlighted a number of issues and concerns that they had so we went back and we modified it. That dialogue has been ongoing and continues to be ongoing. Then there’s been the public meetings that we’ve had and the meetings that we’ve attended on behalf of the National Landlord Association. There’s been a whole series of discussions that have gone on. We brought in independent consultants because it was important that the city didn’t lead on the consultation because that would have been seen to be unfair. They carried out that consultation and met with a whole range of landlords and agents as well as residents, residents’ groups, elected politicians and the social landlord
“We can estimate that there’s around about 50,000 private rental properties in the city but we have no idea who those landlords are” sector, so there was a whole series of consultation meetings. All that has been fed into that final report, and of course the big one was the actual fee itself. We had to go out with a figure because we were going out with that consultation, but of course through that process and working with our advisory group, we have been looking at what would enable our fee to be reduced. If we worked in collaboration, if landlords were a member of say the National Landlords Association or another body therefore they’ve got all that information, would that help reduce the fee? That’s part of the work that’s been ongoing that we’ll be presenting in the next few weeks on what the actual fee is going to be and what the conditions are going to be. SL) One of the important points we’ve been trying to get across to the council is we’re regulated agents and we wouldn’t want to be banded as being the same as all agents because there are rogue agents just as there are rogue landlords. I’m a member of ARLA (Association of Residential Letting Agents) and Louis is a member of NALS (the National Approved Letting Scheme). They are two of the biggest professional bodies and we’ve got codes of conduct we have to adhere to, very similar to what a licensing scheme’s conditions are. We’re already governed by that regulation. Our landlords are already going beyond the Decent Homes Standard, set by Liverpool City Council, so we should be looked at as the more professional side of our industry. DH) Who regulates those bodies? LA) We’re all members of a redress scheme, the Property Ombudsman, so to be a member of ARLA or NALS we have to abide by a very strict code of conduct. If we get things wrong, a landlord or tenant can file their complaint to the Property Ombudsman and if we’ve got it wrong they will penalise us. DH) But it’s self-regulation. The body that you belong to is in effect landlords regulating landlords. How do you pay for it? LA) Through a subscription of about £500 per office. DH) What you are describing is a sector with lots of different bodies that landlords could be a member of – all with different levels of review. There is no commonality. AOB) There are different letting agents affiliated with different bodies. There’s lots going but there’s nothing that collectively brings all that together so that, as a local authority, we have an understanding of what’s happening within our city. There is no way of knowing who is operating in our city and the number of properties they’ve got. Do you agree? Your Move 53
p45-66_p03-12 10/02/2015 16:04 Page 54
LA) We can let you know about 20% of the properties already. Representing the licensed agents, we can supply that information. AOB) So there’s 80% we’re not aware of? We don’t know who they are, that’s the point. You’re advocates of regulation. We agree there are a number of different bodies representing different landlords and we don’t know who some of them are. What you disagree with is the fee and some of the conditions. LA) I’m disagreeing with your conditions first and foremost. They’re flawed. Secondly there is concerns about the impact on the local economy. We already have investors that have moved away from Liverpool because of this licensing scheme. There are already lenders out there that will not lend to properties that come under the remit of licensing schemes. We’ve always said we want to work with this and we want to work with Liverpool City Council. We’ve presented you with our work and our collaboration, we’ve not heard back. You may claim you want to work with us but you don’t. DH) Let me be clear, a consultation exercise is not a “we will go back individually and speak to everybody” exercise, that’s not how it works. The way a consultation exercise works is we take everything on board and then we reach a conclusion. That’s what this exercise has been about. We’re up to the point in the city where one in four properties is now privately rented. If we are reaching those sorts of levels, and there are landlords out there who are renting properties so close to the financial margins of what they can afford, you have to ask the question should they

really be in the industry. If those people really can’t afford to rent those properties – if someone is having to supplement what they’re paying on a property with their income, if that person loses their job what happens to the tenant? In terms of the licensing process, for us to understand what the city looks like, we have to go through a process. This is the start of the scheme and over the next few years we will refine the scheme as we start to understand the city better. SL) Can I just pick up on that? We’ve got accidental landlords who are offering good quality homes and the council has been out publically and said there is a lack of good quality housing in the private rented sector. If you’re then going to diminish that because of financial reasons (by bringing out a licensing scheme that is unaffordable) and remove that stock from the private rented sector, do you think that is going to be a benefit to the housing shortage that we’ve got in the city? AOB) Obviously the £500 fee is what we went out with – and that piece of work is ongoing – but even if it was £500, that works out about £2 per week. LA) But you’re asking for it upfront. You can’t market it as £2 per week. AOB) But you [lettings agents] charge £500 per year, minimum. LA) That is totally irrelevant, we’re providing a service. AOB) If the £500 per year minimum doesn’t put them out of service but £2 a week would, that’s where I am unsure about your argument. LA) It’s not so much the £500 per year. To meet your conditions you could be looking at £2000 to £3000. And I’m not talking regulations, I’m talking above regulations i.e. an electrical certificate. That’s not law, that’s not been passed in parliament. Gas safety has, EPC (energy performance certificate) has. Electrical certificate is not a legal requirement. In my home I haven’t got one. Just to get a certificate you’re looking around £150, just to get it issued. What we’re saying is yes of course the property has to be safe but it’s not a legal requirement to have an electrical certificate yet in your conditions you say ‘on request you have to provide an electrical certificate’. DH) There’s lots of things Parliament is silent on. We have this bizarre situation where a property has to be certified as safe in terms of gas on the basis that a gas explosion could kill someone but to say that electricity does not offer exactly the same levels of threat –why would it be wrong to ask for an electrical certificate? SL) I think the council doesn’t understand what regulated agents do.

Accidental landlords don’t know their landlord obligations, what they’ve got to do to meet the terms and conditions of their responsibility under the Tenancy Agreement. Within that management charge we charge landlords, we make sure that landlord is fully compliant with industry standards which are set by ARLA and NALS. We take that responsibility on board. LA) We all know there’s legislations regarding gas safety and EPCs. What about access? What is the council’s view if we can’t get access to carry out gas safety checks? DH) Let me give an example of how that would be treated with social housing. A social landlord is required to have 100% gas safety and failure to do so can result in quite serious action. So if social landlords can do it, why shouldn’t private landlords? LA) If a tenant refuses access what do they do? Are they allowed to gain entrance? DH) If need be they will go to court and seek entrance to the property. LA) How long does it take to get a court order to gain access? DH) Providers from social housing can manage it. We’ll put you in touch with social landlords, they’ll tell you how you do it. LA) There needs to be more guidance within your conditions. DH) This is about enabling the city to have the best landlords possible and if we’ve got a landlord who is genuinely struggling, not because they don’t want to be a good landlord but because they don’t understand things, our officers are going to be telling them what to do. It’s a win win for everyone. LA) This is where collaboration comes into play. We will pose the problems because we live and breathe the private sector. DH) We’ve been through a consultation process. Consultation isn’t negotiation. It becomes impossible. We’ve reached the conclusion to go ahead with the scheme, that scheme will be implemented in April, we will then carry on working with landlords of all types in order to implement that scheme but also to uphold it. The scheme that is implemented on the 1 April won’t be the same scheme that will be in operation 1 April two years later. It will have evolved. LA) I will tell you what landlords are worried about; you’re trying to criminalise landlords. If you’re not compliant, you’re criminals. SL) What my landlords are asking me is how will the licensing scheme be policed? How much has been budgeted by Liverpool City Council to enforce the scheme? How many enforcement officers will you need? DH) We will be publicising that before the scheme starts. AOB) The focus of this scheme has to be the residents of our city and allowing them to have good quality, decent, warm, safe homes and I think we would all agree on that. LA) Absolutely, our tenants are just as important if not more important than our landlords. They have the human right to live in good standard accommodation. We’re all for that. It’s how it’s going to be implemented, the cost element and the implications of the conditions. As far as we’re concerned they are flawed. If you carry on I do foresee issues within our city. It will be detrimental to our local economy.

HOME NEWS Hit TV show to feature auction of Lennon family home The former home of John Lennon’s mother has attracted attention from BBC’s popular Homes Under the Hammer show as it is set to be sold at auction next month. The Blomfield Road property in Allerton is being brought to the market by Venmore Auctions at its 31 March sale and is expected to appeal to house hunting families and investing fans of the ‘Fab Four’ alike. The event, within the council chambers of Liverpool Town Hall, will be attended by the Homes Under the Hammer team as they aim to capture the sale of the property and its onward transformation. Dubbed ‘the house of sin’ by Paul McCartney as Julia lived there with Bobby Dykins as an unmarried couple, the threebedroom property was where John, who grew up living with his Aunt Mimi nearby, would secretly visit his mother despite his aunt not fully approving and would practice playing guitar. It was where John’s mother was, in turn, persuaded to lend him money to buy his first guitar. A short walk from Calderstones, the property features a bathroom, separate WC, two living rooms and a kitchen. Structurally sound but in need of some updating, it is said to be typical of properties built by the council at the time and homes of a similar condition and style in the area sell for around £120,000. Ahead of the auction, which is also expected to be covered around the world, Venmore’s chief executive, Rob Farnham says: “We’re delighted to be offering this unique part of our city’s property history for sale. It’s a house that’s perfect for auction and I can’t wait to see at what price the hammer will fall.” For further details contact Venmore Auctions on 0151 236 6746.
AGENT SEES SIGNIFICANT YEAR ON YEAR RISE IN INSTRUCTIONS Sutton Kersh’s West Derby branch is already said to be outperforming its successful 2014 figures, after bringing 48% more homes to the market compared to the same time last year.
The agent’s January results show that the branch attracted 40 new instructions during the month, compared to 27 in the same period last year. According to West Derby branch manager Leah O’Neil, rising demand in the area and initiatives for buyers are said to be helping to boost performance. She says: “We are inundated with buyers registering their requirements for properties and are seeing more demand for properties within the L11 and L12 postcodes and three and fourbedroom properties. Further to this, with the Help to Buy schemes available, new build developments are continuing to prove popular.” Meanwhile Sutton Kersh, which also has branches in Allerton and Liverpool city centre, is also said to be experiencing a strong start to 2015 right across its departments. ‘MOVING’ MARKET BRINGS STRONG 2015 OUTLOOK FOR LOCAL INDUSTRY, SAYS AGENT
Victoria Beilin
BE Property Services is expecting its best ever year for house sales, as the number of home buyers is said to be on the rise.
‘Gold’ recognition boosts profile of electrical firm Electrical, audio and security specialist the Electric Lamp Co Ltd is said to have received a global boost to its profile following its latest industry recognition.
The Woolton estate agent, which has been trading for 35 years, says quick sales during January have indicated that it will be a positive 2015 for the local property industry. Naomi Hardy of BE Property Services says: “It is easier to value any property as you know that the valuation you give will be closely achieved due to the increase of buyers. The market is moving and selling has become more enjoyable. “With the amount of interest that has been created in January alone it looks like it is a going to be a good year ahead.” The estate agent says semi-detached houses, flats and investment properties are all selling well in the city and the number of first time buyers and investors is increasing. Victoria Beilin, property manager at BE Property Services, says: “The biggest question we are getting is what we have for a first time buyer or an investor. Everyone is looking for advice in relation to the property market and what will benefit them the most.”
The Scarisbrick-based firm, which works on residential properties across the UK, has been named a Premier Gold trader by one of the product providers it works with – the internationally operating Control4. According to Sean Bramhall, managing director of Electric Lamp Co Ltd, the new status is recognition of its success in sales and projects it has worked on with Control4, and will allow the local company to be marketed as a successful trader therefore “increasing the profile of the business”. With Electric Lamp Co Ltd being picked for the award as part of an annual initiative by Control4, Sean says: “The award was due to the hard work by our dedicated staff, and I would like to thank all our customers past and present. “We have seen homeowners’ requirements change over the last 30 years and it’s very important to keep up to date with the latest technology.”

Ceri’s says: “From a professional point of view this move will be great for me - the firm has a great local reputation, I’m happy to be back on this side of the water, the department is expanding and getting involved in establishing the new city centre office is very exciting!” Paul Crowley & Co, which already has wellestablished offices in West Derby and Anfield, launched its city centre office at One Old Hall Street with a drinks reception this week. Paul Crowley, senior partner, says: “I am delighted to welcome Ceri on board at what is a very exciting time for the company. Our new city centre office – together with the launch of our new commercial department PCS Law – and our high calibre solicitors like Ceri will help us to continue to grow and expand the business in 2015.” Ceri Jones
initiative, as well as agreeing that its sister company, Rogerson Bevan Consultancy Ltd will also get behind the cause. With its latest cheque presentation bringing City Residential’s donations to Claire House over the years to almost £36,250, the agent’s director, Kerry Rogerson-Bevan, says: "We have supported Claire House for over 10 years and this long-term commitment is the least we can offer a charity that does such wonderful work in looking after children from all areas of the North West. "Although there are other children's hospices across the UK, Claire House is our local hospice and its passion and long-term commitment in providing care to children with life limiting, life threatening illnesses is second to none and deserves all of our support.”
AUCTIONEER INCREASES MERSEYSIDE EVENTS FOR Auctioneer, iam-sold is increasing the number of auctions it holds in Merseyside from just three in 2014 to 14 in 2015, it has announced. The property auction network works in partnership with local estate agents to sell properties in Merseyside and says its auctions in the area will expand “significantly” in the next 12 months. Ben Ridgway, business development director, says the company has enjoyed “an incredibly successful year”. He adds: “The expansion in the Merseyside area shows that auction is a real option for the agents we work with and our approach offers a huge competitive edge.” The company launched its first Merseyside event, the North West Property Auction, at the Village Urban Resort in Whiston on 23 October 2014. The event saw 33 of the 39 properties sell for a total of £2.75m. A further two auctions followed in 2014 and the company will expand this to 14 in 2015. To coincide with its Merseyside expansion, iam-sold has launched a new app to provide support to its partner agents on the move. The app features news, messages, training and resources for valuers who join the network. For more information, contact Leanne Radford on 0845 5193 126 or Leanne.radford@iam-sold.co.uk

Aigburth AIGBURTH IN SOUTH LIVERPOOL IS REGARDED AS ONE OF THE AFFLUENT AREAS OF LIVERPOOL IT IS HOME TO BEAUTIFUL GRADE II LISTED BUILDINGS WHERE THE CITY’S MERCHANTS TOOK UP RESIDENCE BACK IN THE DAY AND THE FAMOUS LARK LANE CONSIDERED TO BE LIVERPOOL’S BOHEMIAN CENTRE
Why should you move here? N E I G H B O U R S There is a good amount of schools and nurseries in particular to demonstrate Aigburth as a good place for families to settle. In terms of nurseries, Honey Pot Nursery and Cressington Manor are both good according to their latest Ofsted reports. Sudley Infants and Junior Schools received outstanding and good respectively, and St Margaret’s Church of England Academy, which takes boys from 11-18 and girls from 16-18, was awarded with an outstanding. But Aigburth isn’t just for families. The area is also home to Liverpool John Moores University’s IM Marsh Campus and Liverpool Hope University’s student accommodation. The terraced houses in streets off Aigburth Road are popular with the student residents, especially because of the good transport links making it easy to get from one campus to another. Young professionals wanting to move out of the city will be more than catered for in Aigburth too. There are lots of one and two-bed properties available to rent and you would be hard pushed to be bored in Aigburth, so professionals won’t miss the hustle and bustle of Liverpool’s centre.
A N D
N A T I V E S
LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION Aigburth is an easily commutable distance from Liverpool city centre. It’s well served by public transport links; trains are 15 minutes to the city centre from Aigburth and St Michael’s train stations, and the 82 bus takes around 20 minutes, depending on traffic, from Mersey Road to Liverpool ONE. It’s also less than 20 minutes away from Liverpool John Lennon Airport, in case you have an international commute to work or want a quick getaway.
AVERAGE PRICES TO BUY
Two-bed £95,000 - £240,000 Three-bed £130,000 - £259,950 Four to six-bed £149,950 - £600,000 TO RENT (PCM)

MERCHANTS & VILLAS Properties in Aigburth are a mixture of Victorian villa style houses, alongside terraced houses with original brick fronts, stemming off the streets connected to Aigburth Road. The streets further away from the main road tend to consist of normal semi-detached houses. If you are looking for an older property then Aigburth has many. For those looking to move to the area, many of the tall Victorian houses have been converted into one, two and three-bed flats. They benefit from being in beautiful buildings, often with period features still intact, high ceilings and large communal garden areas. In terms of houses, the area has rows and rows of two-up-two-down Victorian terraces, and also larger terraced houses. Don’t be fooled by the outside as they are often larger inside than they look. In addition, for larger period properties, Aigburth is home to Fulwood Park, one of Liverpool’s oldest residential parks. Though it is different from its 19th Century inception, the development still includes Grade II listed mansions, alongside more modern offerings. If you’re looking to rent in Aigburth, bear in the mind that it is a popular student area and so quite a lot of the larger rentable houses are student property. But, there is an ample amount of rentable properties in the area in a variety of shapes, sizes and prices.
PARKS & RECREATION Sefton Park is situated at one corner of Aigburth, near Lark Lane. There is always something to do in Sefton Park, whether it’s a charity run, the annual fireworks display or just exploring the Grade II listed Victorian Palm House. Sefton Park isn’t the only park. The Festival Gardens are also in Aigburth, near Aigburth train station, with a clear walk to the Mersey. It is home to Liverpool Cricket Club too, for those who like to be active. Aigburth Road and Lark Lane are well served for coffee shops, restaurants and independent Liverpool Cricket Club stores. Visit the Arts Hub 47, a community cooperative shop for local artists and designers, and The Old Police Station which holds regular flea markets and yoga. In addition, Keith’s Wine Bar on Lark Lane is a Liverpool institution and Cooper’s Coffee shop further down on Aigburth Road is a must-go for anyone visiting or living in the area.

I’ve lived in Aigburth since September. I live in a flat on Lark Lane. I love the area, especially the park and Lark Lane. It’s different to living in central Liverpool because it is smaller, but because you have all the amenities close by and there is lots to do it’s still like living in the city centre.
Aigburth is just one of the nicest areas of Liverpool. I’m quite happy living in this area, I wouldn’t change anything about it. I’ve lived near here most of my life, but I’ve lived in a flat in Aigburth for the past 13 years.
I live in a flat in Aigburth, and I’ve lived in this area for around 40 years. It’s a friendly, lovely area. It’s full of nice people and there is lots to do. I like that I can go shopping or just to the park and have a walk around.
I live in a terraced house with my wife and two children. We’ve lived here for 12 years. I like Aigburth, it’s a decent area. There are good transport links and good shops. There are lots of green spaces and great schools too.
I currently live in a terraced house and I’ve lived here for 20 years. It’s great living right next to the park, and there are lots of cafes, bars and the farmers market is good. The traffic can be quite bad at the evenings and weekends, but it’s only because it’s such a nice place to visit.

TALENT
Bristol born and bred, Mark Watson is a professional stand-up comedian, radio host and novelist on one hand, and a husband and father on the other, but how does he manage it all? He’s coming to Liverpool to perform his new show, ‘Flaws’, in which he explores human character defects and looks at the impact his own flaws have on his life. Ahead of the show, he’s taken time out of his demanding schedule to talk to Your Move about success, Ron Weasley and throwing TVs out of windows.
INTERVIEW BY AMELIA HEATHMAN
Your new show is called ‘Flaws’ and your new Radio 4 show is about success. If you get up on stage every night and talk about your flaws and issues, how do you ever feel ‘successful’? It’s a good question – the situation is definitely a contradictory one. Stand-ups get very used to relying on the love and affirmation of the audience, but if that affirmation comes from describing everything that’s wrong with your life, it’s a bit ironic. As a result I think most comics like me have wild mood swings and are basically nutters. Do you consider yourself to be a success now? Can you pinpoint the moment when you realised you’d become a successful comedian? I’d say that the first time I went out to perform in Melbourne and Sydney was probably a moment when I thought ‘I’m going to get away with doing this as a career’. The idea that someone will fly you that far, just to talk nonsense into a microphone, continues to amaze me if I think about it. But I don’t ever think of myself as ‘successful’ really, it’s just not in my character to do that. I’m always restless, always raising the bar for myself. It’s a slightly unhealthy habit to be in; it’d be much better to stop and smell the flowers, as they say, but I’m not much of a flower-smeller. According to the internet, Emma Watson is your sister. Can you confirm or deny this, and is Hermione your favourite Harry Potter character? Emma Watson IS my sister, but it’s not the
Emma Watson you’re thinking of. And I’m not hugely familiar with the Potter books, but Ron Weasley is probably my favourite. He’s unfashionable but he gets the job done. How do you manage the balance between stand-up comedian, radio host, author and father? I manage it pretty badly, that’s the short answer. I always take on slightly more than I can manage professionally; it’s one of the things that make me feel most alive. But the jobs do get in each other’s way as much as they complement each other. And all of them sit pretty badly with family life. So… yes, I’m working on it. You’ve written several novels, with your most recently released one being Hotel Alpha. What’s the concept behind the book and its accompanying series of short stories? It’s a novel about a grand London hotel over 30 years, and in addition to the main book there is this collection of 100 short stories, one set in each room of the hotel, which can be read online at hotelalphastories.com. So the overall work is a combination of old-school textual novel and interactive digital landscape, which sounds a bit pretentious but it’s fine actually. It’s just a way of cramming a much bigger range of material into a single book – basically creating a sort of super-book, in quantity if not necessarily in quality. You’ve guested and hosted a lot of panel shows in the past. Which panel show would you love to guest on that you haven’t already? QI is the only big one that I’ve never done, so I suppose that’s a target now, although I don’t really set out to do many panel shows these days – as you say, I’ve done a lot, and I’ve become more interested in doing stuff that’s more in my own voice and on my own terms. Oh, I’d love to be on Match of the Day if that counts, naturally.
CATCH MARK WATSON AT THE UNITY THEATRE ON AND FEBRUARY FOR MORE INFORMATION AND TICKETS VISIT WWW UNITYTHEATRELIVERPOOL CO UK
What are the best and worst things about being on tour? The best thing is the rock and roll feeling you get from zipping around the country meeting audiences who’ve come specifically to see you. When you start out as a comic, that’s basically all you want: to have your own crowd, however big or small, and to be able to entertain them. The worst thing? I suppose the flipside of rock and roll is that it’s quite an unhealthy way to live. You don’t look after yourself properly; you can end up eating badly, drinking too much, and throwing TVs out of the window, that sort of thing.
“The last time I was in Liverpool on tour I performed at the Empire, which is much too big for me, and I spent most of the night wishing I was John Bishop” Are you looking forward to coming to Liverpool? Yes, I really am. It’s a strange thing, but I’ve never really played there much. The last time I was in Liverpool on tour I performed at the Empire, which is much too big for me, and I spent most of the night wishing I was John Bishop (as we all do from time to time). It’s been a long while since I had the chance to get intimate with Scousers. At last the time is coming.

Trev Fleming
LIVERPOOL IMPROVISOR TO PERFORM 300-MINUTE SHOW A Liverpool performer is gearing up for an ambitious 300-minute improvisation challenge next month which is said to be a ‘UK first’. Trev Fleming, a founding member of Liverpool theatre company Impropriety, will aim to improvise 300 scenes using 300 distinct characters inspired by 300 single-word suggestions from the audience when his show, fittingly titled ‘300’, takes place at the city’s 81 Renshaw cafe and theatre space. The task will be in aid of North West Cancer Research – a charity close to Trev’s heart after he lost both parents to cancer. According to Impropriety, nothing like the 7 March event “has ever been done before in the UK”. It will be broken up into six one-hour slots each including a 10-minute break for audience members and performers alike – and a random word will be called out every minute. From the
word, Trev will create a brand new character in a brand new scene. Aided by fellow Impropriety members as scene partners during the show, only Trev will be performing for the full 300 minutes. Tickets priced, £3 per episode or £12 for the full six hours, are available on the door and donations can also be made through www.justgiving.com/Trev-Fleming The fundraising event will mark the start of a busy month for Impropriety, as it has also announced its sixth annual Liverpool Improvathon will take place on 21 and 22 March. With further details still to be announced the ‘Happily Ever After?’ show will see the company take audience members on a magical journey to where childhood stories came from, in an entirely improvised comedy epic that will run continuously for 2015 minutes.
The public are being invited to take part in an excavation of historic Calderstones Park, where the relics of the first ever humans to live on Merseyside could be found. The Reader Organisation’s Big Dig will take place between 27 April and 8 May and marks the first time the public has been allowed to take part in excavations of the site of the Neolithic ‘Calder’ stones; ancient stones featuring carvings created by the first humans to live in the area. Richard MacDonald, heritage stories maker at The Reader Organisation, says: “The Calderstones are of national importance and this dig is an exciting opportunity for people in the local area to get involved in a community dig and support The Reader’s plans for the future. “As the park has never been built on there could be anything under our feet. We may even find evidence of the first humans to live in this area – relics of the earliest scousers!” Prior to the dig, The Reader Organisation is inviting people to a free talk by Ron Cowell, curator of prehistory at the Museum of Liverpool, at Calderstones Mansion on 7 March to learn more about the stones and the area during the Stone Age. To register for the free event visit www.thereader.org.uk.
RED DOOR VENUE TAKING SHAPE AHEAD OF OPENING The transformation of Berry Street’s former Metropolitan pub is “shaping up”, as a new four-storey venue gets set to open at the site in the coming weeks. With the Red Door bar opening on 23 February, followed by a corporate VIP party to celebrate its arrival on 26 February, the team behind the project says it has “tried to retain the character and charm of the building” within the new addition to the city. As Red Door signage now adorns the exterior of the building and bar tender training is underway, Lee Lynch from Red Door, which already has an established bar in Chester, says: "We are absolutely delighted with the way Red Door Liverpool is shaping up, it really is a fantastic space. Equally, we are thrilled with the bar team we have put together, their knowledge, skill and passion is impressive to say the least.”

Last year’s Hope Fest
HOPE FEST SET TO BE BIGGEST EVER Music lovers will be able to see more than 100 bands perform at 15 Liverpool venues in return for donations to the city’s homeless, as Hope Fest 2015 is launched. Having previously taken place on a much smaller scale, Hope Fest will return in 2015 with three times the number of venues used in 2014 and more than 100 bands on the line-up, as the weekend of music aims to raise funds for charity partners including The Whitechapel Centre, The Basement Advisory Centre and The Big Issue in the North. The likes of the Bombed Out Church, The Krazyhouse, Studio 2 Parr Street, Bumper, The Brink, The Magnet and the legendary Jacaranda are amongst the venues to have signed up to host music events between 18 and 20 September. Festival goers can get tickets by donating a ‘Hope Pack’ made up of food and clothing for the city’s homeless instead of the usual money transaction. According to organiser Anna Grace Henney the 2015 festival is going to be the biggest yet. She says: “Hope Fest is back and bigger than ever. We are expecting over 100 bands and we’ve signed up 15 venues for the first time – all for a good cause.” The festival is now seeking bands from Liverpool and beyond to play at the festival and has opened submissions until 1 May. & Best for...
PANCAKES Pancake Day is by far the best thing about February. When 17 February rolls around, you can flip your own or you could venture out and try one of Your Move magazine’s worthy recommendations.
STATESIDE STYLE Moose Coffee, Dale Street, L2
CÔTE Moose does American and Canadian breakfasts like no other. Its breakfast menu is incredibly long and varied and it’s served all day, meaning you can pop in any time for a helping of Double Dutch pancakes; two large homemade pancakes with chopped smoked sausage and streaky bacon, topped with over easy eggs and served with butter and maple syrup. Phwoar.
FRENCH FANCY La Crêpe Rit, Albert Dock, L3
Now breakfast is sorted, on to lunch. And what’s better for lunch time than a savoury galette, made with buckwheat flour and left unsweetened. In Liverpool, La Crêpe Rit is your port of call for the best savoury pancake. Try the Suave, with chicken, asparagus, mushrooms and cheese. It may not be Brittany weather outside but you can sure pretend it is.
SWEETNESS AND LIGHT The Interesting Eating Company, Allerton Road, L18 And for dessert, the Interesting Eating Company’s fine selection of sweet pancakes cannot be topped. Available as crêpes or American style, you can have yours with the classic lemon and sugar, the cheeky Nutella and banana and the mind-boggling combination of strawberry and balsamic glaze. Yes please!
Paradise Street, L1 Côte bistro is a new French restaurant that’s bringing Parisian chic to Paradise Street. Sandwiched between Jamie’s Italian and Salt House Tapas, Côte adds a splash of French to Liverpool ONE’s Mediterranean row. I was sampling the breakfast menu and so arrived to the restaurant bright and early on a Saturday morning. Greeted by a smiling waitress at the door, my friend and I were asked for our coats and given a choice of where to sit. Although the window seats were tempting, we swapped people watching for a cosy booth, tucked away inside the restaurant. With a few weekend brunchers dotted around, the atmosphere was relaxed and I soon forgot I was in the busiest part of the city centre. Walking to our seats, I noticed the different jam jars placed on each table for customers to help themselves to, a really nice touch that can make all the difference to the dining experience. Once sat down, the waitress was back to take our drinks order. In need of my morning tea, I ordered an earl grey and my friend went for a flat white.
REVIEW BY JENNIFER CHAMBERLAIN
Unique to Côte’s breakfast menu was the cocktail section(!), which both surprised and inspired us with a sense of joie de vivre. My friend played it safe and asked for a non-alcoholic Virgin Bloody Mary (£4.25) whilst I indulged in a Mimosa (£3.95) - blanc de blanc brut with fresh orange juice. At such a reasonable price, this is a perfect weekend treat. Et pourquoi pas? For breakfast, I ordered the crêpe complète (£6.75) - a savoury pancake filled with two perfectly fried eggs, thick bacon and a topping of Gruyère cheese. Although the filling was rich, the use of buckwheat flour made for a light and crispy casing and I was impressed by the chef ’s ability to replicate the famous Breton galette. My friend ordered a French breakfast (£7.95) – creamy scrambled eggs, streaky bacon, field mushrooms, toasted brioche and boudin noir (black pudding). Unlike its hefty English equivalent, the French breakfast was light and
grease free. Both dishes were satisfying and portions were generous. However, our gourmand sides got the better of us and we shared a portion of French toast to finish. The syrup glazed fried brioche, accompanied by a fresh fruit salad of chopped strawberries, melon, kiwi and mango was a definite highlight. With popular bistros Franc, Jacques and Pierre already well established within the city, I wasn’t sure where another French bistro would fit in. Although it lacks the rustic charm of the trio, Côte does well to offer an alternative French experience that is more sophisticated in its interpretation of the continental cuisine. There is something decadent about dining out for breakfast and most people wouldn’t sacrifice their precious weekend lieins for a morning meal. But with impeccable service and an impressive breakfast menu to offer, a visit to Côte bistro is worth getting up for.
