In all seriousness to win Best Estate Agency for Customer Service and Best Lettings Agency for Customer Service in my home city within 3 years of starting this business is phenomenal. We are chuffed. People thought I was slightly mad to open an estate agents in the middle of a recession but I knew what we had to do to be the best, and now our hard work and endeavour has got us there. The award is a
reflection of our ambition to be different to all other agents. This was an ambition of mine and was born out of frustration. The frustration of a property developer and landlord, who regularly used estate agents and wasn’t happy with service I was getting. So much so, I knew I could do it better and decided to open my own Estate Agents. Knowing and understanding what customers want is fundamental to where we are today. I want to thank all of our customers, for initially daring to choose a different agent with a different approach, and a special mention for all those who’ve recommended us to their friends and family. HOME NEWS FIRST NEW ALLOTMENTS SINCE WWII TO PROVIDE RESIDENTS WITH GREEN SPACE Residents in Dingle are being given an opportunity to own their own quality green space as the construction of the first new allotments in Liverpool since World War Two begins. Several of the six allotments being built as part of a regeneration project have been completed at Park Hill by Glendale Liverpool, a joint venture between UK specialist green service provider Glendale and Liverpool City Council. Ten apprentices from Glendale started work on the allotments by planting 21 new trees and 650 hedge plants earlier this month. A further 12 plots are being created by INES (Plus Dane) and Jigsaw (LHT) with the help of volunteers. This first 18-plot phase is set to increase to 34 over the next 12 months, and the land has the

potential for 60 half plots to allow many residents to grow their own greenery. parking at the site, and Councillor Steve Munby, Liverpool City Council cabinet member for neighbourhoods, says: “The new allotments will be a great asset to the local community, and are being warmly welcomed. It is great to see organisations working together to create a new facility. We are also in discussions about creating additional plots on the site because we have a waiting list of people.”
Luxury apartment plan for historic buildings Historic Grade I listed buildings in Wirral’s Hamilton Square will be converted into luxury apartments after the sale of the buildings were completed. Goodman Wells purchased the two five-storey buildings through property consultant Smith and Sons and plans are underway to renovate them for residential purposes. They will join four other buildings in the square currently being converted into apartments. Jason Wadeson, partner at Smith and Sons, says: “These buildings around the square are stunning architecturally and being in such a great location, provide developers with the opportunity to create some incredibly appealing homes.” Two other Hamilton Square buildings bought by Goodman Wells, including the former NatWest bank, have already been converted into apartments and are now being let to tenants. Paul Burgess, director at Goodman Wells, says: “We’re pleased to secure two more purchases at the historic Hamilton Square where we are currently developing six buildings in total. “Across all of our projects, we endeavour to protect and restore the important listed features of each building, taking them back to their former glory whilst enhancing the interior in line with modern living standards.” The Hamilton Square properties will be converted into homes 52 Your Move

NEW HELP TO BUY ISA ‘SHOULD BE WELCOMED’ SAYS AGENT A new Help to Buy ISA which was revealed in this month’s Budget announcement should be “welcomed with open arms” according to a Liverpool agent. Following on from the success of government-backed Help to Buy Equity Loan and Mortgage Guarantee initiatives the Chancellor, George Osborne outlined the new scheme to help first time buyers save for a deposit quicker. Available through banks and building societies from Autumn 2015, the new Help to Buy ISA accounts will provide a £50 bonus from the government for every £200 a first time buyer saves, with the chance to receive a bonus of up to £3,000. The accounts, available for four years, will be limited to one per person rather than one per home so those buying together can each receive a bonus. Louis Anastasiou, managing director of Liverpool agent Andrew Louis, has welcomed the new initiative and says: “I will certainly encourage anyone that doesn’t yet own their own home and is wanting to get on the property ladder to look into the New Help to buy ISA sooner rather than later. And remember couples buying their first home together can get a £3,000 Government boost in half the time. So whether you plan a property this year or in five years’ time, any support from the government should be welcomed with open arms.”

These unusual circumstances were how Circa Waves formed in 2013, and they have rightfully earned the status of one of the most exciting bands to be coming out of Liverpool right now. Their debut album ‘Young Chasers’ is about to be released and it’s all indie rock guitars and youthful sentiments that have already earned them a worldwide following. We caught up with lead singer Kieran Shudall to find out how things are going for the four-piece and why Liverpool is the best city to start a band in.

TALENT INTERVIEW BY AMELIA HEATHMAN You came together and formed at Sound City in 2013. Things seem to have moved pretty quickly since then. I’ve been in bands for years and I’ve been so ready to tour the world and release music, so now that it’s happening it doesn’t feel too quick for me. It can move as fast as it wants, I’m ready for it. During this last year or so, more amazing things have been happening every day. I get phone calls about something great that has happened and it’s a really good time to be in Circa Waves. At what moment did you realise Circa Waves were going to be big? When I wrote [the song] ‘Young Chasers’ and it was played on BBC Radio 1, I knew something special was happening and I thought that this song and these types of songs had real potential to be huge and go to festivals and wherever. From the very off I felt the songs were good enough to make us a really big band. Your debut album, also called ‘Young Chasers’, is out at the end of March. Describe it in three words. I don’t know! Energy … rock … genuine. I think its genuine rock ‘n’ roll, indie music with a rock past, I’m not really sure! I’m really excited, this is the culmination of the last year and a half; we’ve built towards this point and it’s all coming to a head now. It’s quite daunting but the excitement is overwhelming. I’m so ready for the album to be released; I’ve had it in the fold for a year now so I really want to give it to the world. Kieran, you grew up in Woolton. Are the rest of the band Liverpool born and bred? No but we all met here. I’m from Woolton and I live near Lark Lane now but the rest of the lads went to university in Liverpool and have been here for the last seven years. We all came together because ‘Young Chasers’ was played on BBC Radio 1 and I desperately needed to put a band together because I’d started this buzz. I was working at Sound City in 2013 and came across a few lads; one being Joe who was drunk and told me he could play guitar for me, even though he was a bass player. Then I met the other guys through mates and stuff. We started rehearsing and locked ourselves away in a room for about three months just to get good. We wanted to be as good as possible, and that was it really, off we went. What’s the best thing about the music scene in Liverpool? Liverpool is so great for music because everything is so close knit; it feels like you’re only one move away from a musician.
Everyone knows a musician; everyone has someone in their family who plays music, so it was an ideal place to start a band. It’s so easy to get by in Liverpool, everything is quite cheap and there are six venues within a mile radius of each other. It's easy to get gigs as a young band and there’s quite a lot of support there. There’s Sound City, Music Week, Elevator Studios and Camp and Furnace who are putting on gigs all the time. We’re still based in Liverpool. I don’t think I’ll move to London, I love Liverpool too much. Circa Waves get compared to The Vaccines and The Libertines a lot. Do you find there is a pressure for you to live up to? It’s really good to be compared to one of your favourite bands of all time but we’re not really like The Libertines. To me, they’re one of the greatest bands of our generation and I don’t think we’re as good as The Libertines but if people want to [compare us], that’s fine. The only problem with comparisons is people go ‘they’re not as good as The Libertines’, and I’m like ‘I never said I was’! It’s fine and it’s very flattering, but sometimes it doesn’t do you any favours. I understand journalists do have to give people comparisons, and The Libertines and The Vaccines play rock and roll music in a pop format, so I understand that there will be comparisons there. Circa Waves supported The 1975 in Australia earlier this year. Have you been taking showman tips from Matt Healy? (The 1975 frontman known for swigging bottles of red wine and strutting around on stage during performances). I like to think I’m a bit more of an understated performer than Matt Healy, not so flamboyant. He’s a good performer and he has the whole excess vibe down but for me I’m more into the Alex Turner/Pete Doherty style where you move around with a guitar. I always have a guitar and I don’t like wine, so that would be very unpleasant for me. But each to their own, he does a good job. You have talked about coming close to giving up music and getting a ‘real job’. If you weren’t playing music, what would you be doing? Well I was cleaning student houses before this and I hope I wouldn’t still be doing that. I can’t imagine doing anything else. I know that sounds really cliché but this has been the only thing that I’ve found I’m any good at; writing music. Hopefully I’d still be writing songs, and if I couldn’t be in a band I would love to write songs for other people. I’m just so passionate about song writing. All I do every day is think about music and writing songs, and if I couldn’t do that I would probably lose my mind a little bit.

O’CONNOR’S BAR & GRILL Sefton Park, Aigburth Drive It’s not often I’ll say no to an evening out. Throw the prospect of dinner into the mix and I’ll have my coat on before you’ve finished telling me when and where. However, on the night I was set to review O’Connor’s, the recently rebranded eatery at the Sefton Park Hotel, the weather was pretty horrible and it had been a particularly hectic week at work. I wanted nothing more than to curl up in my living room with the fire on and some comfort food and was pretty reluctant to head out. As it was I was in luck, as the home comfort, cosy dining experience is what O’Connor’s excels in. The hotel, a beautiful Victorian villa overlooking the boating lake, is something of a hidden treasure when it comes to dining establishments in the area. The ever-popular Lark Lane, just a short walk away, is home to a wide array of restaurants meaning those diners who don’t know the area too well tend to congregate there, thus missing out on the other restaurants the area has to offer. In an attempt to draw more attention to its culinary offering, the Sefton Park

Hotel’s bar and brasserie have undergone a major revamp with everything from the menu to the light fittings receiving a makeover. The result – O’Connor’s Bar & Grill – is an attractive, Irish-inspired bistro and adjoining bar featuring cosy seating and a traditional feel. On arrival we were greeted by a friendly waitress who, well aware of the appalling weather, sat us in the warmest part of the restaurant before bringing the menus. O’Connor’s does not scrimp on choice. The varied menu featured a wide range of meat and fish dishes from a selection of different cuisines. From burgers and steaks, to fajitas and Thai curry, even the pickiest diner is catered for. Neither my friend nor I are anything close to picky so we had to spend quite a bit of time trying to decide what to have. After much deliberation I opted to start with the Smooth Pâté with toasted ciabatta bread and caramelised red onion while my friend chose the Courgette Fritters – deep
fried courgette cakes with mozzarella and chilli jam. My pâté was rich and smooth but the star of the show was the onion which was sweet and sticky and made the perfect accompaniment. My dinner date’s courgette cakes were light and crispy and deliciously moreish. For my main I chose the Thai Green Curry with coconut and coriander rice. The curry was sweet and creamy and although not fully authentic (it was served with pitta bread) was one of the tastiest dishes I’ve had in a long time. My date’s choice was Apple & Leek Bangers and Mash, served with colcannon mash and pork gravy. While she was very impressed by the meaty sausages the gravy could have benefited from a little more flavour. If O’Connor’s aims to provide a home from home atmosphere, a packed menu of popular favourites and a friendly, laid back environment to rival the hustle and bustle of Lark Lane then it’s safe to say it has succeeded.

OLD BLIND SCHOOL PUB COULD BE FIRST OF SEVERAL LIVERPOOL VENTURES The Old Blind School bar and restaurant will open its doors on the corner of Hardman Street and Hope Street in May. Work is ongoing on the Grade II listed building, which will be revamped into a ground floor pub with cask ales, a private room for sports screening, log burners and an outdoor terrace overlooking Hardman Street. Other features of the building include a striking ornate staircase with a skylight leading to a spectacular first floor restaurant space. Work to restore original features of the building and install modern additions is well underway.
The venue will be the first in Liverpool for The New Moon Company, which has pubs in Cheshire and Manchester. Co-owner Paul Mooney says: “The Old Blind School is a labour of love. It’s going to be a classic blend of modern, urban gastro pub with cask ales sourced locally, cocktails and wines by the glass or bottle, which we have vetted.” The venue is the company’s first in the city and Paul adds: “This area for me is a brilliant part of Liverpool and I can’t wait to get the doors open and who says this is going to be the only one we do in Liverpool?”
EXCHANGE FLAGS TO BECOME SUMMER OPEN-AIR THEATRE The Jungle Book will be among the open-air shows
A post office which was opened on Lark Lane after closures prompted a community campaign to bring the amenity back to the area, is now celebrating two years of successful trading. Carl Reid has owned a newsagents in the city’s bustling bohemian area, which boasts its own hub of independent shops, restaurants and bars, for 14 years and, along with his son Tom, spent around two and a half years trying to set up a new post office to benefit residents after two had been shut down nearby. The father and son eventually managed to launch the post office next door to their long-standing shop, preventing local residents from having to walk half an hour to get to the next nearest branch. According to Tom, the service has been welcomed into the community. He says: “The business has grown since it was launched two years ago and as long as our shop remains busy too it’ll be good for the future. We only set the post office up to benefit the community.”
Exchange Flags will be transformed into an open-air theatre in the summer, as a host of plays and community events take over the historic city centre square. Chapterhouse Theatre Company will bring four open-air shows to the commercial district space, beginning with Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice on Saturday 8 August followed by Sherlock Holmes on 15 August, The Jungle Book on 22 August and Jane Eyre on 5 September. The theatre productions will make use of the cobbled outdoor venue and guests are advised to bring their own rugs and blankets to watch the shows. Pride and Prejudice will include an open-air picnic and children who want to see the The Jungle Book are encouraged to dress as their favourite jungle characters. The space at Exchange Flags includes a balcony and roof terrace, as new owner Capital Properties plans to host a series of summer community events in the square including arts, music and food events. Exchange Flags will also welcome new restaurant, Vincent Café and Cocktail Bar in the former Sakura site. The new restaurant follows the success of the Vincent Hotel and restaurant in Southport and will join Fazenda, Gourmet Coffee, Philpotts and The Juicery at Exchange Flags.

THREE QUEENS & AMAZING GRACES
Evocative black and white photographs exploring inner city Liverpool in the early 1970s will go on display at The Bluecoat. The images were taken by photographer Tricia Porter, as she joined her future husband and then Liverpool University student, David in a project to document the area’s changing community. Taken a decade before the L8 district hit the headlines with what became known as the Toxteth Riots, the images are a result of the couple gaining trust and being allowed access into residents’ everyday lives, businesses and homes. The exhibition, which is part of the LOOK/15 festival, is free to enter and further accompanying events will take place during May.

– MAY With giant puppets trawling the streets in recent years, Liverpool has shown it knows how to put on a spotlight-grabbing spectacular event. With the forthcoming Three Queens, One Magnificent City festivities being primed as 2015’s big headliner, hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected to descend on Liverpool and be wowed once again. A bank holiday weekend of activities will be rounded off with a
magnificent world first, as the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria perform synchronised manoeuvres on the Mersey to mark the 175th anniversary of Cunard. Meanwhile the Three Graces will be brought to life with state-of-the-art projections. From then on, a programme of events will continue around the city culminating in an unmissable 4 July celebration.

My favourite with... SCOTT ROBINSON
Famous 90s boy band, 5ive, known for hits including ‘When the Lights Go Out’ and ‘Everybody Get Up’, sold 20 million records worldwide before splitting up in 2001. After reforming for ITV2’s ‘The Big Reunion’, original 5ive members Richie Neville, Sean Conlon and Scott Robinson are about to head off on their ‘Loud and Intimate Tour’ and will be stopping off at Liverpool’s O2 Academy. We spoke to Scott ahead of the show about his favourite album and what he loves about the city.
Favourite film: Favourite thing about Liverpool: The Beatles.
Favourite musician: He hasn’t been around for that long but, as someone who has inspired a generation, I think Ed Sheeran is the one. When you see him playing in arenas and on stages he is breathtaking. He’s also a really nice guy, and took the time out after his show to meet my son and has inspired him to play his guitar. I don’t think he’s written a bad song yet.
Favourite album: Probably something by Phil Collins or Eminem’s third album, The Marshall Mathers LP. I like an album you can listen to the whole way through, and The Marshall Mathers LP is amazing.
I’m a big film fan so it’s hard to decide. One of them would definitely be ‘Good Will Hunting’, it’s brilliant. It would be that or ‘American History X’.
Favourite career moment: The icing on the cake was the Hammersmith Apollo gig for The Big Reunion. That was the first time my son had the chance to see me perform on the big stage and he came on stage after too. I remember thinking ‘even if I never perform again, my son got to see what his dad does’ and that was quite special for me.
Favourite venue: I loved playing the O2 in London. I never thought I’d perform there because first time around it didn’t even exist but now I’ve been lucky enough to play it several times with The Big Reunion.
Favourite holiday destination: I love the Caribbean. I love to go to Jamaica or Barbados and have a chilled out holiday, with a beer in my hand and the sun shining!
Favourite city: I do like Liverpool as a city, it is a lovely place. But I’m more of a homeboy and will always live in Essex, so Essex is my favourite place really.
