EDITOR’S LETTER Are you looking to breathe new life into an unused room or show off your garden during the summer? Help is at hand, as we bring you all you need to know on renovating rather than relocating and budget-friendly ideas in our guide to home improvements. If you’re scouring the city for your dream home, our Best Buys serve up inspiration with stunning penthouses, and our Hot Topic brings an up to date look at the major Project Jennifer regeneration scheme which is underway in North Liverpool. Plus, as this year’s LightNight approaches bringing unique showcases and special commissions, we’ve picked some must-see attractions in our guide to the 2015 programme, and we chat to celebrated poet Lemn Sissay ahead of a headlining slot at the Writing On The Wall festival.

What a night for us, we did the double

In all seriousness to win Best Estate Agency for Customer Service and Best Lettings Agency for Customer Service in my home city within 3 years of starting this business is phenomenal. We are chuffed. People thought I was slightly mad to open an estate agents in the middle of a recession but I knew what we had to do to be the best, and now our hard work and endeavour has got us there. The award is a

reflection of our ambition to be different to all other agents. This was an ambition of mine and was born out of frustration. The frustration of a property developer and landlord, who regularly used estate agents and wasn’t happy with service I was getting. So much so, I knew I could do it better and decided to open my own Estate Agents. Knowing and understanding what customers want is fundamental to where we are today. I want to thank all of our customers, for initially daring to choose a different agent with a different approach, and a special mention for all those who’ve recommended us to their friends and family. I also want to say a big thank you to all our staff, both past and present, from our apprentices to our management team, you’ve all contributed in your own way and we are extremely grateful.

Advice from chartered accountants 0151 228 8977

Make mould & condensation Julia Casimo

Renovating a commercial property? Q: I’m renovating an old office building to create a ‘business hub’ in the city centre. My investment will be substantial and I was wondering if there were any tax reliefs I should be aware of. I also have a large portfolio of buy-to-let properties, so pay a lot of income tax. A: You should think about Business Premises Renovation Allowance (BPRA). This is an extremely valuable tax relief which is often overlooked in my experience and therefore underutilised. BPRA applies to most renovation expenditure incurred in bringing a disused commercial property back into use. Although the expenditure is capital in nature, BPRA allows qualifying expenses to be set off against your income. So, assuming you are a 45% income tax payer, if you incur renovation expenses of £50,000, you can save tax of £22,500. BPRA was designed to stimulate development and regeneration in locations which may otherwise be overlooked by investors. Many of the areas designated for BPRA fall within Merseyside. To qualify, the property must: • Be commercial and must have last been used for the purposes of a trade, profession, vocation or as offices; • Have been empty for 1 year before renovation costs are incurred to bring it back into use for the purposes of trade, profession, vocation or as offices ( there are some excluded trades – but it’s fair to say that most small and mid-sized enterprises will qualify) • Be in a designated area. Qualifying expenditure is capital expenditure incurred: • To convert a qualifying building into qualifying business premises • To renovate a qualifying building that is, or will be, a qualifying business premises • To repair qualifying business premises Most normal building expenditure will qualify including the cost of labour and materials, surveying, planning, architectural and design services, Next steps If you believe you may be eligible to make a claim for BPRA, the sooner you begin the process the more likely you will be to receive any available tax relief. The scheme is set to end on 5 April 2017 for individuals and 31 March 2017 for companies. The above gives only the main areas to consider. If you think you might be eligible to make a claim for BPRA, please contact us for help.

Big renovation jobs can take a lot of time and a lot of money – get it right and the results are more than worth the effort, get it wrong and it could cost you big. Here are our 10 musts for any major renovation...

1 | Material matters

2 | Know your property

3 | Get permission

Sourcing and buying materials is an option for the experienced renovator who knows what they are doing. It can be cheaper than buying them through a builder, who will add a markup. However, it is worth remembering a professional may be able to identify the best materials to use for the job and have access to discounts and suppliers through the trade. Whichever option you decide depends on how hands-on you want to be.

How well do you know your home? Before any major renovation you need to know exactly what condition your home is in and what will need updating before you break out the sledgehammer. For example, there’s no use installing a new floor if a leaking roof ruins it when winter comes – so it’s important to be given a professional rundown of your home’s ins and outs by a chartered surveyor before beginning.

Converting a garage or painting a few walls won’t mean a trip to the planning office but extensions, exterior redesigns and other major renovations will require you to secure planning permission through the local council before you can begin. Remember, you could be forced to reverse any work you have completed at your cost if you have completed renovations without permission. Visit your local council website for details of how to apply.

4 | Check for references

5 | Be a good neighbour

It’s time to hire a contractor – and that means getting plenty of references to weed out the cowboys. Check if they have done similar projects before and find out what their previous clients say. If possible, go and take a look at previous work to put your mind at rest.

Have you told the neighbours? This should be done as a courtesy because renovations can be noisy, while skips and other building work can limit access on some roads. You may also want to check any remodeling won’t encroach on others’ land or block any of their views. You don’t want to complete a renovation and find yourself in a legal dispute with a neighbour, so get things sorted before work begins.

6 | Make the decisions

7 | Where to live?

8 | Check your insurance

Even if you are living elsewhere, ensure you are at the site of the renovation as often as possible. Don’t leave decisions to the builder, who may choose the least costly and easiest option but won’t be able to read your mind. It’s your renovation and your home, so be there for all of the decisions that will affect the outcome.

Apart from getting in the way, living at a construction site can be a stressful experience. You may want to consider securing alternative accommodation for the duration of the build. If finances or circumstances don’t allow this, make sure you have at least one space separate from the work where you can get away and de-stress. After a few weeks of dust and noise, you’ll be glad of the sanctuary.

Major changes to your property will have an impact on the likes of your mortgage and building insurance. Notify your insurer immediately once work is complete. Failure to do so may result in any claims being denied, as the insurance will be invalid.

9 | Plan for emergencies

10 | Preparation & planning

A poor quality renovation is bad enough; an unfinished one is a disaster. Surprise costs will occur and you need to be prepared to pay them. Even the best plans can be derailed and a contingency budget will help things to run smoothly. And remember; don’t buy expensive fixtures and fittings until all of the work is complete or you may not get a chance to install them at all if the money runs out.

Every aspect of the redesign, from timescales to materials and costs, should be meticulously planned. Use accurate floor plans, research materials and get second opinions on everything before work begins.

Summer is here and it is time to get your garden ready. From creating a perfectly manicured lawn to adding a splash of colour, there are plenty of things you can do to create a stunning garden, whatever your budget.

Blooming marvellous

An extension of your home In summer the garden should be considered an extension of your home and therefore it must be a place where you can feel comfortable. Enjoy the longer nights with an area for seating. If you have space, installing a patio or decking can create an area for barbeques, drinks and meals, while simply removing weeds, litter and grime from an existing space is an affordable way to brighten up the garden. Lawn chairs, sun loungers and tables are fairly inexpensive at this time of year. Make sure you get durable items and consider using a tarpaulin cover to save them from the worst of the elements during cooler months. Alternatively, give your existing garden furniture a refurbishment by painting, repairing damage and replacing tired fabrics to create somewhere to spend time in the summer. You should also consider outdoor lighting, This can be in the form of a mains-attached light or solarpowered garden lights for an easier to install and more atmospheric feel. You could also consider an outdoor fire pit or chiminea. Not only will this provide light at night, it will keep you warm when the sun goes down and allow you to enjoy your garden for longer.

LOVE YOUR LAWN

You’re not aiming for Wimbledon turf here, but a well-maintained lawn can make all the difference to a garden. Once weeds and moss are removed, a lawn can often look yellow and patchy. To rectify this plant some seeds in areas where the lawn is looking thin. Choose multipurpose seeds for a more durable lawn that will need less care than a fine grass lawn. If you are a regular mower

As with any room inside a house, a splash of colour can do wonders for a garden in summer. It’s also easier and much more affordable. Simply choose some colourful plants to brighten up areas of the garden. Consider hanging baskets, grow bags and pots if soil space is limited. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends using tender perennials such as fuchsia or bedding plants such as nasturtium and pot marigold over the summer months. In order to maintain some colour during winter, choose from hardier plants such as clematis or Helleborus niger – often called Christmas rose.

it’s not a bad thing to leave some clippings on the lawn. This will allow the lawn to reuse some of the nutrients – although dead, brown grass should be cleared away. For a low-maintenance lawn consider letting the grass grow slightly longer and add wildflowers to areas for a more natural feel that will be great for local wildlife such as bees and other insects. You can consider mowing a path through the

longer grass for a more sculptured look. Meanwhile, reduce the amount of time you spend on edges by installing hard edging materials such as stone or wood borders. A final option for those who do not want to spend too much time on their lawn would be to install artificial turf. Hard wearing and longlasting, it can look relatively realistic and comes in various styles. Your Move 39

Tom & Clair Allerton

For a long time, Clair and Tom Knisz had been adamant that they would renovate rather than relocate from their Allerton home to make the living space better suit their needs. So having waited for their two young daughters to grow up, they decided last summer that it was finally time to take the plunge and transform their property.

40 Your Move

Having lived in the house for 20 years, the couple were well aware that their good-sized exterior space would eventually offer an opportunity to make way for a larger kitchen and an all important office space for Clair, who spends a lot of time working from home. “We have really good neighbours and to be honest in this area, to have a house with this type of building work the price goes up quite a step so we’d always said that we wouldn’t move because we had the land to do the extension,” says Clair. “Why move from somewhere you love living anyway?” The couple appointed South Liverpool based home improvement specialist Premier Building Solutions, who could help with the planning stages right through to completion, to take on the project and they soon found there was even more potential than they first thought. “We were originally looking to just extend the kitchen and put an office in, and when the architect came out he talked about opening the space all the way up which I hadn’t considered because I didn’t want open plan,” explains Clair. At the time, Premier Building Solutions was working on another project along the same street, so Clair and Tom were not only able to

p21-50_p03-12 05/05/2015 15:52 Page 41

discuss other options available to them but they were also able to see for themselves how similar work had come together in another property. “When I actually saw some work that had been done by the builder I liked it, so we opened up the kitchen and the living room and heightened the ceiling to put a vaulted ceiling in with VELUX windows, and also extended the kitchen sideways and put a utility room and an office in where the existing garage was,” she adds.

Premier Building Solutions brought the importance of lighting to the couple’s attention, something they say they hadn’t previously considered, as the firm took charge of the final finish in the ‘wrap-around’ open plan kitchen and living room. According to Tony Hancock from the company: “It’s all about co-ordinating the lighting with the colour schemes.” Elsewhere in the home, the cupboard underneath the stairs made way for a

downstairs toilet and the front of the property was also opened out to provide a porch, leaving only a front dining room area on the ground floor untouched. Plus, the loft was boarded out to create a “clean storage space” with ladder access. Such an overhaul made the renovation seem like a daunting prospect at the start, but the straightforward process and efficient pace of the work soon laid the couple’s concerns to rest. “I was really concerned at first because you hear horror stories of builders, but we moved out because with the work we were having done it was recommended,” says Clair. “We were told it would take 12 weeks to complete and it took 13 weeks, and that was with us adding extra work on. “Most days we popped in and the builder was very good at communicating what he was doing, and you could speak to the men he had working with him on a daily basis.” Less than 12 months since the summer-long renovation was completed, Clair and Tom say their refreshed home has noticeably transformed their whole way of living. “It’s opened up the house and it opens up the way you do things as well,” says Clair. “The kitchen tends to be quite a meeting place; when anybody comes they automatically sit and have a chat in the kitchen first and then they come into the living room. It just changes the way you live.” Your Move 41

Which renovations will help boost the value of your home? And which ones may have the opposite effect? Whether you’re hoping to sell or simply add some value to your investment, this handy guide tells you which projects are worth investing in and which ones to avoid.

Do...

Don’t...

Embrace energy saving

Ditch the garden

It may not be glamorous but the best home improvements that add value are often mundane tasks such as installing a modern central heating system or double-glazed windows. This will not only save you money on energy bills but will add value to your home, as potential buyers could be put off by properties that don’t offer these mod cons. Essentially, you’re doing the work so a potential buyer won’t have to, and you’ll be able to pass on the cost in the value of the home.

Installing a pool may seem like a good idea in the summer but if it encroaches on too much garden space it could actually decrease the value of your property – and there are always the cleaning and maintenance costs to consider too. Many people want plenty of green garden space with a home and building sheds, sunrooms, pools and hot tubs needs to be considered carefully before tearing up the lawn and flowerbeds.

Make room for improvement The two rooms with the potential to add the most value to your property are the bathroom and the kitchen. Modernising both can reap rewards in terms of the property’s value, while adding a downstairs bathroom can add plenty of value to a home and make use of underused storage space. As with any room, keep it tasteful. Gaudy, tacky decorations can be inexpensive to install but can wipe thousands of the price of a house.

Convert that space

Erase history

Adding an extra bedroom could add plenty of value to your home. For example, a two-bedroom home converted into a threebedroom home will allow it to cater for larger family groups. If you have an unused loft or even a garage you could consider converting it into an extra living space.

That feature fireplace may seem a little tired but you’re more likely to reduce the value of your home if you remove it entirely, as many people want an Edwardian or Victorian home with those aspects intact. Try to sympathetically restore period highlights instead and don’t overwhelm a character property with identikit modern features. An eye for design will allow you to enjoy fireplaces, coving, windows and brickwork alongside modern additions. It will also allow you to keep value within the property.

Get tech savvy A state-of-the-art sound system installed throughout the house will impress any music lover, but remember it can be expensive to install. If you’re hoping to sell your home in future it could be seen as a feature that bumps up the price of the property even if the buyer does not particularly want it. It is also worth considering how likely it is for it to age and become defunct as technology advances. You wouldn’t want a Betamax player in your brand new home’s bedroom would you?

Your Move | Home Improvement

Have you outgrown your home but can’t afford to move somewhere bigger? Or maybe your large living space is lacking that cosy feel? Well fear not, as we’ve rounded up a few simple tips that can breathe new life into your property without breaking the bank.

Divide the room If a large open room lacks character and cosiness, be clever about using furniture to section it off into several homely areas. An ‘L’ shaped sofa is perfect for creating a separate, comfortable area, making way for a table and chairs to provide another usable section elsewhere in the room. An open plan space with multiple seating areas is perfect for entertaining guests too. A small sofa at the end of a double bed or the addition of an armchair in the corner can also help to close in a sprawling bedroom space and turn it into an additional haven to relax in during any time of the day.

All about the walls You don’t need to demolish a wall to make a room feel bigger, but simply considering its colour can make a huge difference to the feel of the space. Whilst darker colours may have that homely, warming appeal, they also absorb the light and can make a small room feel like it’s closing in. Opt for white and light tones on the walls, coupled with pale shades of flooring, to reflect light and give an airy feel. The use of stripes can also be an effective way of elongating a wall to make a space feel bigger, whether being used vertically to make a ceiling appear higher or horizontally to widen the look of the room, and the addition of mirrors can also create the illusion that a room is bigger than it really is. To tackle the empty feel of a large space on the other hand, ceilings can feel lower if the walls are only painted with a colour half the way up. Also, try hanging pictures lower on walls with high ceilings to make them appear less sparse.

The right style The use of soft furnishings and ornamental items can make a dramatic yet budget friendly difference if thought out well. Turn a small room window into a focal point by adding floor-length curtains to make it look bigger, and layer textiles such as throws and decorative cushions in a large room to make it feel more welcoming. Meanwhile rugs can add a burst of colour in a room which has been given a light and airy neutral decor, or they can also be used in multiples to highlight different areas of a more open plan space. When it comes to ornaments, pick out a few big and beautiful statement items, as opposed to lots of smaller objects which may appear as clutter.

HOT TOPIC

YOUR MOVE CAN YOU GIVE A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF WHERE YOU’RE UP TO?

Steven Knowles: It’s fairly simple really, it’s business as usual. The project is moving forward in the timescales we’ve set ourselves. We’re on site now doing enabling works, prepping the site ready for Sainsbury’s to get on site in the late summer. YM FROM SPEAKING TO SOME OF THE LOCAL RESIDENTS IT FEELS LIKE THERE HAVE BEEN SOME DELAYS IS THAT THE CASE OR IS IT JUST BECAUSE THINGS ARE HAPPENING BEHIND THE SCENES?

SK: We’re on a targeted programme and that was that we would have the site ready for the summer of this year and then Sainsbury’s would start its build programme. The Sainsbury’s store is still due for delivery in late summer/autumn of next year. There’s no delay. YM AND WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE PROJECT? WHAT CAN RESIDENTS EXPECT TO SEE?

SK: There’s another 80,000 square foot of retail space to come alongside it, half of which we’ve agreed deals for. That will be the retail centre delivered. Alongside that will be the public realm

and quite a substantial amount of highway works. YM HOW MANY JOBS WILL THE SCHEME CREATE?

SK: In general terms it’s going to create up to 1,000 job opportunities under a £50m redevelopment scheme. That will be construction, subcontractors and obviously people working in the retail element of it. YM WILL THERE BE MUCH CHANGE TO TRANSPORT IN THE AREA?

SK: Obviously because we need to get access to the retail park there will be alterations to the highway network so there will be new junctions formed off Scotland Road. YM HOW MUCH OF SCOTLAND ROAD WILL BE IMPACTED?

SK: It will be impacted. Obviously during the construction period we’ll keep things going. The highways will continue to work. YM CAN YOU GIVE ANY INFORMATION ON THE HOMES INVOLVED IN THE SCHEME?

SK: The housing element is a key part of Project Jennifer and is being carried

This major regeneration scheme will transform this part of north Liverpool. It will create more than 1,000 jobs and provide a new district centre for the area

out by housing developers including Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH) and Liverpool Housing Trust (LHT). LHT has recently completed 20 new residential units at Dryden Street and LMH has recently started work on site to transform the redundant 14-storey Marwood Tower into new residential accommodation. YM WHAT WILL THE PROJECT MEAN FOR THE AREA?

SK: This major regeneration scheme, which has been much needed and wanted by the local community for many years, will transform this part of North Liverpool. It will create more than 1,000 jobs and provide a new district centre for the area, as well as better public spaces and extensive road improvements. The commencement of main site works represents the substantial investment being made in the city and brings more than 10 years of work to fruition. It is testament to the support for the project in the local area. YM FINALLY DO YOU HAVE A MESSAGE TO THE RESIDENTS?

SK: The scheme is on track and we are continuing to deliver.

HOME NEWS FIRST LOOK AT TOBACCO WAREHOUSE APARTMENTS A show home for the Tobacco Warehouse Apartments development at Stanley Dock in North Liverpool will open soon, according to the developer behind the scheme. Stanley Dock Properties has revealed what the inside of the apartments will look like once the building, believed to be the world’s largest brick warehouse, is converted into 503 one, two and three-bedroom apartments as part of a wider £130m project to transform the area. Covering 32 acres and 13 storeys, the new apartments will include mezzanine floors in each of the properties, while an interior section will be cleared for an internal courtyard for residents. The top floor of the development will include luxury penthouse apartments with river views. The basement of the historic warehouse, which was built in 1901 and is Grade II listed, will be turned into a car park for residents and the ground floor will be used for offices and retail. Enabling works on the scheme are underway and a show home will be launched soon. The apartments are the latest development to take place at the Stanley Dock Village site. HIGH DEMAND FOR NEW KNOWSLEY HOMES Two Knowsley housing schemes have been attracting high interest over the past month, according to developer TJ Thomas Estates Group. Since the Easter weekend, reservations have been taken for five of the 11 three-bedroom homes available at the Queensbury Grove site in Huyton, and the Foxes Grove development on Sugar Lane has welcomed its first residents after one of the three three-bedroom properties was sold. David Mahoney, director of the TJ Thomas Estates Group, says: “The quality of the product, the confidence in the market and the Help to Buy scheme have all been encouraging buyers.” With the schemes continuing to attract demand for their remaining properties, David says their success also brings optimism for forthcoming TJ Thomas Estates Group residential projects. The Roby-based firm is preparing to launch its Birchwood Mews development in Walton Vale, featuring six three-bed homes, in the coming months, and is also getting set to build six executive homes in Roby later in the year.

Work to give the 11-storey Belem Tower, which overlooks Sefton Park, a new lease of life as a luxury apartment development is back underway.

For further information about the new homes, call TJ Thomas Estates Group on 0151 708 6544.

Construction on the post-war building has restarted after a short delay, and the latest plans include further improvements to the specification of the apartments. The 63 one, two and three-bedroom homes will include Virgin Media wifi, a modern intercom system and what has been described as an ‘eco design’ once they are completed. The apartments at Belem Tower have a completion date of 2016 and a spokesperson for IPS Invest says development is “full steam ahead” on the refurbishment, with a sales office and show home that are “fully open with viewings available on request”. The first phase of the development has seen a number of properties become available to buy and a reduced price of £77,500 is being offered until the end of June. Once open, the new apartments at Belem Tower will offer views over the 250-acre, Grade II-listed Sefton Park, the River Mersey and the Welsh hills. Free parking is available for some of the residents. Foxes Grove

INDUST RY N EWS LICENSING SCHEME PROMPTS EXPANSION FOR AGENT Liverpool agent Sutton Kersh has expanded its team in response to the city’s recently introduced landlord licensing scheme. The firm, which has branches in Allerton, West Derby and the city centre, has appointed new landlord licensing officer, Jane Burton to “meet the needs of its extensive property and landlord management portfolio”. Jane, who previously spent five years working in Puerto Banus and then 10 years as a property manager in London, recently took on the role of registering all managed Sutton Kersh properties with Liverpool City Council. Following the launch of the compulsory initiative, landlords across the city were legally obliged to register all of their properties for a licence by the start of April. With the letting agent carrying out the procedure on behalf of its landlord clients, Jane says: “This is a very

interesting and challenging role, especially as it is working on a new process that has not been implemented Jane Burton before. I am looking forward to making a start on stage two soon, which will involve an invitation from the council asking for more detailed information on the properties.” Following Jane’s appointment, Sutton Kersh is also continuing to expand its growing block management department, which is said to have been celebrating a number of new contracts across the city, and is currently looking to recruit an experienced property manager. For further information visit www.suttonkersh.co.uk.

EVOLVE GROUP CONTINUES GROWTH ACROSS PROPERTY SECTORS Liverpool-based property services firm, Evolve Group is continuing to expand, having successfully branched out into the student accommodation sector.

David Colebourn at Evolve Group’s Arena House

Having spent 18 months growing from a domestic electrical and gas contractor to providing full facilities management to halls of residence complexes, Evolve Group has now also acquired its own accommodation site and is moving further into property development. The firm now owns a 54-bed halls of residence at Arena House on Liverpool city centre’s Duke Street, and is also preparing to get a residential property renovation scheme underway having invested in Knowsley Developments. With a focus on refurbishing new builds, Evolve is preparing to renovate 10 homes for rental by the end of the year, with the first three properties at the site due to get underway in early May. Managing director David Colebourn says Evolve has seen “substantial growth in a short period of time,” with the student property services expansion alone creating 10 new full-time positions and additional sub contractor roles and the company still has further growth in the pipeline. Evolve Group’s Wavertree High Street office is currently being renovated, as the firm further expands the team with the appointment of an architect and adds financial and mortgage advice to its services. Meanwhile, with an aim to also provide services for start-up businesses, David adds: “Our initial plans for the future are to develop the facilities and building management services by acquiring another building.”

Mistoria to launch first Liverpool branch Mistoria Estate Agents will open its first Liverpool branch on Picton Road, Wavertree on 1 June. The North West estate agent, which was founded in Salford in 2009, is expanding to the Liverpool area, where it will offer sales, lettings and management services. The company has a portfolio of over 250 North West properties but says the decision to move to Wavertree was taken because over 50 of these are based in Liverpool. Mistoria Group CEO, Mish Liyanage, says: “This is an exciting time for Mistoria. We already have a solid foundation in the area and an excellent team built over the past six years. We will now have a strong presence and we are hoping to make a major splash in the Liverpool property market.” Mish says the new branch will create jobs once it opens. He says: “We are looking to expand the team in Liverpool and we look forward to adding a few new faces to the Mistoria family.” Refurbishment of the new office began on 1 May and will be completed in time for the launch day on 1 June.

INDUST RY N EWS Charity success for agent Members of Allerton’s Clive Watkin Partnership team stepped up to Liverpool’s Spring 10k challenge during the bank holiday weekend, and raised hundreds of pounds for a local cause.

Rod Waldron, Rachel Keating and Gareth Wright showed their support for Merseysidebased KIND, a children’s charity which the South Liverpool estate agent has chosen to benefit from its fundraising activities. Rod spent two to three months training to take part in the event at Sefton Park alongside seasoned runners Rachel and Gareth, and says it was such a success that they are already setting their sights on another 10k event. Even the changeable bank holiday weather was on the team’s side on the day, as Rod adds: “It was great, the weather was rubbish until around 10am, and then the event all got going at 10.30.” So far the trio have raised around £500 for the cause, which is currently celebrating its 40th year of helping children and their families to overcome disadvantage to realise their potential.

CREATIVE AGENCY INVITES BUSINESS NEIGHBOURS TO LUNCH A creative agency in Liverpool city centre will host a ‘Big Business Lunch’ to encourage collaboration and conversation with its Ropewalks neighbours. The Foundry Agency, an integrated communications agency based on Henry Street, will host the event at its office in June and invite nearby businesses to the networking afternoon. The Big Lunch is a community initiative launched in 2009 by the Eden Project to encourage as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours annually to boost community spirit. Last year, 4.83 million people took part in the sixth Big Lunch, and joined together to have lunch in their streets, gardens and community spaces, with 89% of people saying they will keep in touch with the new people they met. Christine Beckett, head of PR for The Foundry Agency, says: “We’re really excited about hosting the first Big Business Lunch for The Foundry Agency. The idea behind The Big Lunch is all about getting to know your neighbours; our event will work on this same principle and bring the different business communities together. “The Ropewalks is a vibrant area, full of diverse businesses who without this occasion, wouldn’t necessarily find time to meet and network.

The Foundry Agency’s 36 Henry Street base will host the Big Business Lunch

‘STEADY GROWTH’ PROMPTS EXPANSION FOR LAW FIRM Liverpool law firm Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors has expanded its team to meet an increase in demand, as its property department continues to grow. Ceri Jones joins the residential conveyancing team and fellow new solicitor Rebecca Fan will work across both the residential and commercial property departments. Meanwhile, the team of support staff has also increased by 60%. The firm, which has a well-established residential property department and has been offering conveyancing services for more than 25 years, has seen business levels rise in recent years despite the downturn in the economy. In the last two financial years, departmental turnover is said to have increased by 61% and employment of fee earners in the property department has trebled. Building on the success of the residential property offering, earlier this year the firm launched its commercial property department in Liverpool city centre. Tracy Thompson, operations director, says: “With departmental turnover at its highest, the property department at Paul Crowley & Co is stronger than ever. The expansion of the property team together with the launch of the city centre office reflects this steady growth and marks an exciting stage of development for the firm.” For further information visit www.paulcrowley.co.uk.

“Ultimately, we want to help foster a community spirit and bring like-minded individuals together. Held in our office on Henry Street, the afternoon will offer guests food and drink, conversation and opportunities for people from different businesses to connect with one another. Hopefully this will be the first of many.” For more information contact Amelia Heathman on 0151 709 1633.

TALENT

INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

You say you’ve been a poet from a young age. How did you know you were a poet back then, and how did your love of poetry come about? I was given a poetry book when I was 14 from the deputy head of Leigh C of E School called ‘The Mersey Sound’, written by Liverpool poets Roger McGough, Brian Patten and the late Adrian Henri. In the first poem of that book, by Adrian Henri, he mentions an orphanage. I was brought up in children’s homes, I had no family, and that book being given to me was a flagpole in the base camp of my journey to be a poet. My foster parents were religious and used to give me all kinds of books of poetry and books from the Bible so there was a connection there as well. I made a documentary on BBC Radio 4 where I went back to the children’s homes. Without having family I didn’t have people to remember me other than people I’d only known for a short time, so making documentaries has been important and when I went back the cleaner said ‘you used to sit in the corner writing your poetry’ - people always remember me by it. As early as I can remember, that’s what I wanted to do and that’s what I did. You don’t have to be published to be a poet, you need to write poetry. You must write a lot of poetry that’s personal to you, so is it surprising when lots of other people relate to it too? If you wanted to be super famous you would never be a poet, it would be a stupid career to take. You’ve got to do it for a way bigger reason and that same reason lasts a lifetime in as much as it has an effect on people’s lives. I really cherish that. Poems can help people through really dark times in their lives, and also lift people in light times of their lives. We turn to poetry when we need to hear the world speak, we don’t turn to the news for that. Your poetry is featured on streets and landmarks. Are you commissioned to write poems specifically for public spaces or do people ask to use your poems that they find inspirational? It’s both. I’m commissioned to write poetry for public spaces and I’m in discussions about a landmark poem with a certain area in Liverpool which is being developed with a particular view

that the arts should be central rather than peripheral. I mean why would you develop an area, spend however much on it and then assume all the art there should just be a little statue or some words engraved into a plaque on a small wall somewhere? Art makes life easier and when you’ve made your money as a lawyer or doctor or working in the hairdressers, what do you want to do? You want to go and dance, listen to music, put pictures on the wall, read books on holiday. Art is about quality of life and it’s really easy for us to think it’s an added extra but it’s not, it’s who we are. My landmark poetry makes a book of our environment. As somebody who has learnt that this is my home, this north, this Britain; to have my poems tattooed onto it is such an honour. So when you’re commissioned to write a poem for a particular space, do you look to where it will feature and the people it will represent for inspiration? You should always write a poem from your perspective but you should add to the environment rather than simply describe it, it’s got to be more than that. When you look at something, you’re also looking through the prism of how you feel so the same thing can look different to different people because each one is feeling different at the time they’re looking at it. It should draw people’s eyes to a place they would otherwise not have been looking. You’ve really embraced social media, using Twitter and Facebook to interact with people. Does that mean you’re writing more poetry than you’ve ever written? I do a morning tweet where I try and describe the day in a way it’s never been described before since the beginning of time, every day. That’s got a following around the world, which is kind of weird – fun and weird! Social media is just a way of people being able to connect and for writers and poets particularly, their job is to connect with themselves and anybody else who wants to listen. One of your morning tweets was once used to build a pop-up cafe in London. Has your writing inspired any other unusual creations? It inspired a festival in Canterbury – my morning tweets were all over an event called the Wise Words Festival. Also, I began a Literature Festival of the Sea in Southend, where every book had something to do with water. I went to the Arctic for a project which took artists to experience climate change, with Jarvis Cocker, Laurie Anderson, Martha Wainright, KT Tunstall and a set of other artists, and I wrote a

track called ‘What If ’. That then became a festival tent at Schumacher College in Devon. Oh and I’ve got a PHD scholarship as well! I inspired Huddersfield University to do a scholarship for a care leaver to have a PHD paid for by the university; it’s a really big deal. That has led to Leeds University offering a PHD scholarship for a care leaver, and I approached Vivienne Westwood to ask if she’d put her name to it. My aim is that, especially in the north of England, each university will have a PHD scholarship for a care leaver, named after a famous supportive person. You’re taking part in the Harlem Nights music and spoken word event as part of Liverpool’s Writing on the Wall festival. Can you tell us a bit about it? This is inspired by Malik al Nasir, a great ambassador for spoken word and particularly his relationship with Gill Scott-Heron, whom I knew while he was alive and made a BBC documentary about. It’s great this link between Harlem and Liverpool is being made because both are fiercely independent. Both of them are rebellious, artistic firebrands of the working class, middle class, upper middle class. As the years go on these areas change and grow but their independence remains the same. I’m just looking forward to doing a good gig, I love doing a gig in Liverpool. I was brought up in a children’s home in Leigh, Atherton and Ashton-in-Makerfield, which is equidistant between Liverpool and Manchester. I graduated towards Manchester but I could, in the same way, have graduated towards Liverpool. In fact, I was much more a Liverpool poet than I was John Cooper Clarke. I was inspired by the Liverpool poets, although Manchester was very good to me in the poetry world. What other projects do you have underway? I was commissioned this year to write the official poem for the FA Cup. They’ve been making a short film of each verse to go out with each round. I’m really proud of that commission. Also, I’m going to be nominated to be chancellor of Manchester University. There’ll be a few people running, one of whom is me and another is Peter Mandelson. For me it’s really exciting, I represent the power of the arts to raise the economy and the spirit of people and communities. Then on 12 May I’ve got a comedy on BBC Radio 4 called ‘Lemn Sissay’s Homecoming’ which is all about the fluid anchor of home.

AROUND THE CITY Giant ducks will be auctioned for charity

Giant ducks have been painted for the trail The 20 giant ducks set to appear across Liverpool will be sold in a charity auction in summer 2015, according to the team behind the ‘Duck Trail’. AquaDucked, which will also hold the Liverpool Duck Race on 7 June as part of the International Mersey River Festival, says the 7ft ducks will be sold to raise funds for MacMillan Cancer Trust at an as-yet-unnamed location. Artists are painting the ducks in a public

exhibition at Mann Island, before the ducks are placed at 20 of the city’s landmarks from 15 May to coincide with LightNight 2015. Rachael Treacher of AquaDucked says: “The response at Mann Island has been great. It’s been fantastic; lots of people have been coming and taking photos. The ducks are based on Liverpool’s firsts such as Aintree Duck celebrating the first Grand National, Everton and Liverpool Football Club Ducks and

LIGHTNIGHT TOP PICKS FOR THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL

LIVERPOOL PHILHARMONIC HALL, 9 MAY

VARIOUS VENUES ACROSS THE CITY MAY

EVENT

LightNight promises a hearty helping of after-hours arts and culture for all when it takes place this month, as over 100 organisations host events and exhibitions at more than 50 locations around the city. With a jam-packed showcase of one-offs, special commissions, launches and guided tours though, as this year’s festivities officially kickstart Liverpool’s major One Magnificent City programme, it’s tricky to know where to start. We’ve picked out a few highlights that’ll ensure you make the most of the spectacular feast of entertainment and who knows; you may come across a few more surprises along the way!

So this may be a whole other festival in its own right, but what better time to get it all underway than LightNight. The celebration of photography will set up home around the city until 31May, but you could be among the first to explore its range of exhibitions as previews take place at venues including Tate Liverpool, The Bluecoat and the Victoria Gallery & Museum to name a few. The likes of Tate and The Bluecoat will also be adding to the occasion, with musical entertainment for the opening night.

HEX// LIGHT DIVISION Specially commissioned for LightNight by the Arts Council, Hex// Light DiVision will illuminate streets as a science fiction ritual is performed at different times and locations throughout the night. If you’re heading to Liverpool Anglican Cathedral Plateau, University Square, Pier Head or William Brown Street, then you could be mesmerised by a display of light, music and movement. Put together by the Harlequin Dynamites and collaborators, the display follows LightNight’s 2015 ‘Looking to the New World’ theme as the Dyad ManMachines seek harmony between technology and nature.

KALEIDOSCOPIC DISTURBANCE Visitors are encouraged to have their own cushions at the ready, as a display is projected onto the ceiling of Liverpool Cathedral for the very first time. Lie down and look up, as artist Andy McKeown’s hypnotic work appears 175 ft high under the Tower Vault. Fragments of cathedral stained glass will form and reform, alongside the sounds of live chamber choirs and the organ during this engaging show.

A CELEBRATION OF SONG You may have witnessed LightNight attractions in the vicinity of Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral, but 2015 will be the first year the building has welcomed the festivities inside its main space. The venue will play host to choral and a cappella musical performances by choirs and vocal harmony groups from around the region, providing the perfect opportunity to take in some of the cathedral’s stunning features.

LUSITANIA LIFE LOSS LEGACY Especially for LightNight, Merseyside Maritime Museum will present an extra special showcase of its major Lusitania exhibition. Music, dance, poetry and art will explore the ongoing display, which commemorates the sinking of the passenger ship on 7 May 1915 during the First World War. You may stumble across further entertainment as the venue also welcomes Mermaids in their Element – nautical-inspired readings and images by Professor Sarah Peverley and Liverpool University Players – and a performance by the Liverpool Shanty Kings on Albert Dock nearby.

THE MUMMY RETURNS! Be one of the first to see the unmissable ‘Garstang Mummy’ exhibit at the University of Liverpool’s Garstang Museum of Archaeology. This family friendly display will showcase the mummy which survived 3,000 years in an Egyptian tomb, as well as escaping the 1941 Blitz and rubbing shoulders with Tutankhamun before being brought back to the city.

THREE QUEENS SPECTATING Liverpool’s Three Queens event promises to be nothing short of spectacular when Cunard’s iconic Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth ships sail into the Mersey over the bank holiday weekend. We’ve picked out some eateries which are perfectly placed so that you won’t miss a thing.

THE TEA QUEENS The Thistle Liverpool, Atlantic Tower, L3

NYL RESTAURANT & BAR

North John Street, L2 The Thistle is pulling out all the stops for the Three Queens, and with its Vista Restaurant and Vu Bar and Terrace boasting views over the Mersey it’s easy to see why. During the festivities Vista is serving afternoon tea menus, each themed around the Cunard ships. Alternatively, soak up the atmosphere from the Vu Bar with drinks, snacks and platters.

WATERFRONT FEAST Cargo, Alexandra Tower, L3 This waterfront restaurant is somewhat of a hidden gem, but with its floor to ceiling windows facing the Mersey it’s well positioned for a delicious meal without taking you away from the action. Plus, it’s lining up a Three Queens special pre-fixed menu featuring something for everyone, with meat, fish and vegetarian options.

AN ICONIC VIEW Home Woodside, Birkenhead, CH41 How about watching the memorable occasion with the city skyline as a backdrop? With panoramic waterfront views, Home offers a fabulous view any day of the week but is making the most the spectacle. Tickets are available for those wanting to enjoy champagne and canapés while watching the Sunday night’s fabulous fireworks.

With independent eateries popping up on every corner, Ropewalks is fast establishing itself as the food hub of Liverpool. So, when venturing to dine at the opposite end of town, I felt somewhat out of my food comfort zone. But exquisite architecture sets Liverpool’s commercial district apart from Bold Street bohemia and provides the perfect backdrop for fine dining. Situated in the spectacular surroundings of the former Royal Insurance Building, NYL aims to bring the vibrancy of New York to Liverpool. Although attached to the newly opened Aloft hotel, the restaurant has a separate entrance and the grandeur of the exterior definitely sets the tone for what’s inside. My dinner date and I took our seats in the corner and admired the impressive interior. After much deliberation and bargaining over who would sample which dishes, we were ready to order. My friend enjoyed a starter of roast duck breast complemented by a fresh Asian salad, plum reduction and toasted seeds (£7). The friendly waitress was attentive to her dietary needs

REVIEW BY JENNIFER CHAMBERLAIN

and ensured the meat was cooked thoroughly. To start, I went for pan fried scallops with a smoked bacon crumb and cauliflower puree (£9). I was won over by its garnish of balsamic strawberries and thought the surf and turf combination worked well. Whilst I’m anything but picky, I was concerned about the inclusion of black pudding as part of the dish. This was not detailed on the menu and therefore risks disappointing the many people who dislike it. Continuing on my ocean quest, I chose a main of seafood linguini which tossed together shrimp, smoked haddock and clams (£17). Topped with a trio of crisp calamari and washed down with a dry Sauvignon Blanc, this dish really hit the spot. My dinner date was equally as impressed with her main, playfully titled ‘Three Little Piggies’. ‘It looks like something from Masterchef!’ she exclaimed, as the beautifully presented dish arrived. The impressive plate combined three different cuts of pork

and was dressed with a cute candied apple. Now I have to admit; I’m not really a dessert kind of girl. I religiously choose a cheese board over a sweet. But on this occasion I was swayed by the dessert menu and could’ve happily ordered any of the choices on offer. Inspired by the restaurant’s New York theme, I enjoyed the NY cheesecake accompanied by brownie bites and a berry compote (£6). With a twist on the classic, the cheesecake filling was encased in an Oreo base which ensured I ate every last bite. My friend was intrigued by the ginger crème brûlée (£6). Presented in a quaint tea cup, the flavoursome dessert came with a scoop of chilli ice cream which certainly packed a punch. If you’re looking for somewhere to dine out in style, NYL is definitely a worthy contender. The restaurant seems to get the balance right between offering a decidedly upmarket dining experience whilst remaining affordable and unpretentious.
