EDITOR’S LETTER Liverpool is no stranger to a spectacle, and the bank holiday festivities are set to be bigger than ever as Cunard’s fabulous Three Queens sail into the city. Excitement for the event is in full swing with hundreds of thousands of spectators preparing to descend on the city’s famous waterfront, so we caught up with the Queen Mary 2’s Captain Christopher Wells in our Go Liverpool guide to get the inside view on the run up to the occasion. Meanwhile, as the UK adjusts to a new government being in place following this month’s General Election, we hear from organisations and members of the electorate to find out how the region is expecting to be affected by policies moving forward. And funnyman Ross Noble takes time out from his busy schedule for a chat, ahead of his musical theatre debut in ‘The Producers’.

Our 2 awards

Abode has a record April! What a month we’ve had. We put over 100 new properties on the market in April and sold over 70 houses. We registered more buyers than ever before and there were more mortgages written in April than any other month this year. More and more customers are switching to Abode because they are fed up with the service they’ve been getting from their existing agent. The fact we are winning awards for our service means we are an obvious choice for customers. Now is the time to sell your home. Abode will get you best price, and offers more advertising than any other agent.

For a free valuation call us on 0151 601 3003

In all their glory at our awards party. Both received for customer service and both fully deserved!

What a night for us, we did the double

In all seriousness to win Best Estate Agency for Customer Service and Best Lettings Agency for Customer Service in my home city within 3 years of starting this business is phenomenal. We are chuffed. People thought I was slightly mad to open an estate agents in the middle of a recession but I knew what we had to do to be the best, and now our hard work and endeavour has got us there. The award is a

reflection of our ambition to be different to all other agents. This was an ambition of mine and was born out of frustration. The frustration of a property developer and landlord, who regularly used estate agents and wasn’t happy with service I was getting. So much so, I knew I could do it better and decided to open my own Estate Agents. Knowing and understanding what customers want is fundamental to where we are today. I want to thank all of our customers, for initially daring to choose a different agent with a different approach, and a special mention for all those who’ve recommended us to their friends and family. I also want to say a big thank you to all our staff, both past and present, from our apprentices to our management team, you’ve all contributed in your own way and we are extremely grateful.

The conclusion of the 2015 election process is, we believe, a welcome relief irrespective of your political bias. The uncertainty surrounding a hung parliament and the numerous coalition possibilities had begun to apply the brakes to both the lettings and sales markets.

In lettings, concerns over Labour’s threeyear tenancy and rent controls were delaying tenants’ commitments to reserving apartments and also concerning investors’ long-term commitment to their buy to let interests in the city. In sales, uncertainty over which government was to hold power was affecting purchasing decisions although not by as much as we feared. Looking forward the newly elected Conservative majority government should be good for both the sales and lettings markets in the city as it will provide a period of stability and support that almost certainly would have been diluted under a coalition. If there is one concern it is the Tories’ pledge to extend the right to buy privilege to allow housing association tenants to purchase their properties at a discount of up to 35%. This may be a step too far in encouraging home ownership and could unsettle the supply of the social housing stock in the future.

Housing developer Clare Noakes sales manager Lovell North West

The Conservatives pledged a number of polices that I am confident will provide a boost to housebuilding.

The continuation of the Help to Buy equity loan scheme until 2020 is fantastic news for those with a small deposit and the party’s pledge to bring forward 200,000 discounted starter homes is also great news for those looking to get a foothold on the ladder. The government has also committed to introducing a Help to Buy ISA in the autumn for first-time buyers, which will top up their savings, and will no doubt help many more people to own their own home sooner. I look forward to seeing how the government will deliver on its promise to build more homes and I hope further measures to streamline the planning process at a local level will also come to fruition.

education karen fowler teacher

As we approach a newly elected government, education (no doubt) will have to endure another five years of proposed cuts to its budgets. Less money means cuts to staffing, resources and larger classroom sizes whilst teaching staff attempt to continue to raise school standards. Threats are already being made by the new government that a ‘zero tolerance’ approach will be made to all schools, forcing them to become an academy and taken over by new leadership, putting many teaching and leadership jobs in jeopardy. This continues to add to the stress already put on staff and schools to perform for league tables and even more paperwork to collect data to ‘reduce the burden of Ofsted inspections’.

despite the bitter roots of education, teachers are dedicated, committed and hardworking professionals who will ensure the next generation continues to bloom – no matter which government is in power.

The recent General Election has arrived at a particularly pivotal moment in my life as I sit my final exams and complete a degree in English Literature and Philosophy from the University of Liverpool. The election of a Conservative government means that for arts graduates, like me, the future is uncertain. Having suffered drastic cuts in state funding over the last five years, the arts sector is more unstable and competitive than ever and

unpaid internships have become the norm for graduates wanting to get a foot in the door. The prospect of a further five years of austerity is alarming for students and graduates of the creative arts, especially if the government decides to raise tuition fees to £11,500 a year as has been suggested. Sooner or later, creative minds will no longer be able to justify taking the financial risk of studying arts subjects to degree level. What will happen then?

I went to sleep hoping that the exit polls were wrong but when I woke up, it was confirmed that the repugnant attack on public services we’ve seen over the last five years would continue. My son (due in June) will spend his first five years under a Tory government which I am struggling to come to terms with. We have had amazing support from the NHS throughout the pregnancy and as our son will be born with a cleft lip and palate, we will again rely on the NHS for operations and access to specialists. If the current trend continues, families such as ours will not have access to such a service in 2020. I am also extremely lucky that my wife and I are both able to work to support our family. Entire communities have already had their lives decimated by austerity, and now face further managed decline. It is tragic.

c u lt u r e david fleming director national museums liverpool

The policy that will affect National Museums Liverpool most is that of cuts in government spending. We are a national museums service - nationalised by Margaret Thatcher’s government in 1986 just like the British Museum and, despite being based in Liverpool, we are dependent on funding direct from government. We’ve already had big reductions in our government grant, and it looks very much like there will be more reductions to come. This means, simply, that we will be able to employ fewer people and do less. At the moment it is difficult to see past this particular policy. We are doing all we can to raise money elsewhere, for example there was a public appeal to help us buy the Mauretania model that recently came up for auction, but the funding gap we are trying to plug is huge. This will dominate our work for the next few years.

young professional amelia heathman pr executive I’m disappointed that the Conservatives’ housing policy only appears to focus on homeowners. Labour’s plans to introduce a cap on higher rents signalled an understanding that nine million people rent their homes privately in England alone, and so they shouldn’t be left out when it comes to policy. It’ll be years before I think about owning a home, due to rising house prices in general. In London now, the rent and housing prices are obscene and it’s ridiculous that entire generations will be priced out of living in their own capital city. It seems that Conservative policies dictate that unless you own a home, or are buying one, then you’re not taken into consideration, and this is wrong. One policy that will benefit me is the raising of the income tax allowance, so I will have more immediate income as I start working my way up the career ladder. But with policies like this, it makes you question how much they will cost. If it means a top-down reorganisation and privatisation of the NHS, I’d rather have less immediate income now and the NHS still there when I’m older. Your Move 47

HOME NEWS 50% OF HOMES SOLD AT BELVEDERE PARK DEVELOPMENT

Belvedere Park

Half of the properties at a Macbryde Homes development in Neston have been sold, as construction work reaches the final stage. Just three of the six homes at Belvedere Park remain available, according to the housebuilder, and demand for the final three detached properties is said to remain high. The homes are part of the company’s ‘Signature Collection’ and come in four and fivebedroom layouts. Simon Macbryde, chairman and managing director of Macbryde Homes, says: “The demand for these fantastic new homes at Belvedere Park has been phenomenal, and the remaining three plots are already generating quite a bit of interest from our customers. “It’s been our privilege to bring the Macbryde Homes Signature Collection to the North West, and Belvedere Park is a shining example of the premium quality new homes we have worked so hard to deliver.” The houses are located in a conservation area and include an open plan dining and family area, a paved terrace and a master bedroom, which is situated on the first floor. For more information on the properties available at Belvedere Park, call 0151 259 8837.

WEBSITE RELAUNCH BRINGS NEW FACILITIES FOR TENANTS

DEVELOPMENT SHORTLISTED FOR PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

A new website has been launched by Liverpool agent City Residential, as it aims to bring a “fresh approach” for house hunters and tenants. Through its new bespoke online facility the agent has set out to provide “easy access” to all of its sales and lettings properties and featured developments, and also offers a 24/7 system for tenants to report maintenance issues and gain advice. Other features include links to City Residential’s social media feeds and news about its chosen charity and fundraising events, as well as blogs and access to the agent’s quarterly marketing report. City Residential director, Kerry RogersonBevan, says: “We were keen to change the website as it hadn’t been changed in many years, the market had moved on and we needed a fresh approach. “We feel the website will be of benefit to all our customers, particularly as they will be able to keep up with all our live news and social media feeds. Tenants will be able to report maintenance issues on the website and indeed receive useful advice with regard to any repairs in at least 40 different languages.” For further information visit www.cityresidential.co.uk.

TALENT

INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

You’re making your musical theatre debut in ‘The Producers’. Is that a new direction you were looking to take? I’m a huge Mel Brooks fan and I was a massive fan of the show. I wasn’t actively going ‘I must get into musical theatre’ but when the opportunity came up it was too good to miss, especially because Jason Manford is the lead so it’s win, win. Will your fans see you in a different way given there’s so much singing? I’m always singing and doing daft accents during my shows when I’m mucking around and that’s why they cast me. Obviously Jason’s in it so they said let’s try and cast somebody else who appeals to a comedy audience. It was him who suggested me. I think it would be a massive departure if I was suddenly in ‘Oklahoma’ or playing the Phantom, although having said that, that’s the same as Michael Crawford isn’t it? When he did ‘Phantom of the Opera’ everyone was saying ‘but he’s Frank Spencer’! You’re well known for your spontaneity during stand-up shows. How are you finding the idea of playing a fully scripted part? Because I’ve got lots of lines with other people, if I don’t feed them the lines then they can’t feed me the next line, so from that point of view it’s essential. Because it’s Mel Brooks it’s one of those things where even if you’re not into musicals it’s worth coming to see because, when you read the script for ‘The Producers’, every single line is either a set up or a punch line. I’m really looking forward to it because there’s no faff on any of the writing, it’s just bang bang bang, hitting those beats. It’s great! During your stand-up tours, one show always seems so different to the next because the audiences get involved. How much of a routine do you actually plan? I go on, improvise and then stuff just falls out from that. I might improvise for 10 minutes and get one idea where I think ‘that’s funny, you can play around with that’. Rather than going on with a list of jokes I’m going to be doing, I’ve just got all these ideas floating around and then I collide them together. Something might happen in the afternoon so I might start talking about that, and then that might take me somewhere else. It’s like a load of cartoons all dancing around in my head rather than a list of jokes. Given that’s how it works, what’s the most unusual stand-up experience you’ve had? I did a show where a guy got on stage and proposed to his girlfriend – that was a bit different! One of my favourite shows was

where, and I can’t even remember how this happened, I think there were some UV lights on the stage and I’d started joking about doing the show in the dark. I then did about half an hour in the dark!

Apollo’ and the show is an hour long but I got 45 minutes! That was only about 10 years ago, so even in that time everything’s changed. Your approach to comedy has also worked on television, as you’re guided by Twitter followers’ suggestions on your show, ‘Freewheeling’. What’s your favourite thing that you’ve been tasked to do so far? It was probably when a woman said ‘don’t come to Northampton’, so we spent a whole episode there! Or it might have been getting a bloke with a guide dog to wear masks as the Chuckle Brothers and go through an assault course! ‘Freewheelers’ is another one of those things where I’d stayed off telly for years because everything people were offering me would be a compromised version of what I wanted to do. If you hold out for long enough, eventually when you go to a channel and say ‘I want to make a TV show that completely has no format, we

It seems like while other comedians get more acts following their style, nobody has come through as a ‘next Ross Noble’ or tried to tackle your act. All I’ve done is be myself, therefore anyone who comes along and tries to do something similar is obviously going to suffer from comparisons. Also, the reason I can do what I do is because when I started out – I’m 39 this year and I started when I was 15 – back then in the 90s there was a lot more opportunity to take risks. I’ve always done my shows the way I’ve done them. When I first started and was trying to get gigs at the big clubs everyone was like ‘you’ve got to go to the Comedy Store, do 10 minutes of your best stuff and really make it

“When you read the script for ‘The Producers’, every line is either a set up or a punch line. I’m really looking forward to it because there’s no faff”

count’. Whereas I used to go on and play around, and it’s the same with Edinburgh and telly. Because I’ve always done that, people have gone ‘oh right, that’s what he does’ but it would be hard for somebody to establish themselves and then go ‘now I’m going to do this’. The trouble is, nowadays so many people are trying to do stand-up. It’s become so slick and people have got a real idea of what stand-up is supposed to be. Therefore if you just come along doing something that isn’t that, audiences will just go ‘well it mustn’t be very good’. When I first started nobody went into standup because they thought ‘I can become a household name and become really rich’ either, whereas now it’s more established in the entertainment industry. Everybody is trying to be incredibly slick and there are people trying to get their five or 10-minute tight set so they can go on ‘Live at the Apollo’. I did the first series of ‘Live at the

don’t know what we’re going to do, it’s unscripted, we haven’t got a plan, and we’re not going to do any advanced planning; we’re just going to turn up and invent the show as we go along’, you have to get yourself into a position where people will go ‘yeah I reckon that’ll work!’. What have you got lined up after ‘The Producers’? I’m going on holiday because everyone’s starting to forget what I look like after an eight-month stand-up tour and a few months in ‘The Producers’! I’m working on a couple of things. I can’t really say what but hopefully I might be doing another film at some point, but as soon as I say anything I might jinx it so we’ll see!

Best for...

&

DELIS From gourmet gifts and artisan treats to homegrown produce and continental authenticity, Liverpool is home to an array of delicatessens and foodhalls offering items you just won’t find on the supermarket shelves. We’ve picked out three of the best.

HIDDEN TREASURES Bretta & Co, L1

EVIL EYE BEER & BURRITO SHACK Tucked away off Bold Street, a deli sits alongside Bretta & Co’s bistro providing a trove of rare and unique foodie treasures. One of just a few stockists of black garlic from the Isle of Wight and cheeses that are hard to come by, Bretta & Co also boasts a wine selection featuring a vegan offering and, believe or not, hangover-free Champagne among its artisan products.

FIT FOR A FEAST Delifonseca Dockside, L3 The Delifonseca foodhall is somewhat of a gourmet paradise, providing all the ingredients for a full foodie feast. A Broughs Butchers concession is accompanied by cheeses, cured meats, antipasti and freshly baked foods, to vegetables, drinks, sauces and confectionary. The one stop shop is a supporter of local produce, whilst also sourcing European and global specialities.

SPANISH STAR Lunya, L1 Accompanying the award-winning restaurant, Lunya’s deli provides an authentic range of Catalan and Spanish cuisine to cook up your own mouthwateringly Mediterranean meal. Fresh olives, cheeses, meats and vegetables sit alongside a selection of expertly picked beverages, oils and store cupboard items, as well as the ideal kitchenware to serve up your tapas treats in. The Lunya team can also rustle up a hamper if you’re looking for a special gift.

208 Smithdown Road, L15 Since opening last September, Smithdown Road resident Evil Eye Beer and Burrito Shack has been making a name for itself. Aside from tasty Mexican street food, the team behind the bar is known for running ‘Food Bank Holidays’, encouraging visitors to donate £5 worth of food to the Central Liverpool Foodbank in exchange for £1 burritos. The community spirit is enough to get you interested, whilst the prospect of excellent burritos and beer will keep you coming back for more. When we entered Evil Eye on a Friday night, we were greeted to the sounds of vintage Smiths records and the smell of paprika and chilli in the air. The place is decorated with fairy lights and old Día de los Muertos and sugar skulls posters, with candles on every table, giving it a warm and welcoming atmosphere as shelter from the rain that was hurtling down outside. Surveying the drinks menu, Evil Eye is true to its beer shack credentials, with many Mexican and American beers on offer. We decided to try the homemade desperados (£3.75) alongside nachos

REVIEW BY AMELIA HEATHMAN

with salsa and guacamole (£4). The homemade desperados were excellent; the beer was thirstquenching while additions of lime and tequila were sweet with a sharp kick. The guacamole was sufficiently chunky and covered a generous portion of crispy nachos. Our waiter explained the process of ‘building’ our burritos as neither of us had been before. Evil Eye allows you to have total control over your meal, with glutenfree and vegan options available. Diners pick a main, such as chipotle chicken or bourbon BBQ halloumi; rice, vegetables, salsa, and beans to build their burrito, with different fillings coming with a handy spice guide. I chose the bourbon BBQ pulled pork burrito, with the proper Mexican rice, spicy veg, ‘Pico de Gallo’ salsa, with refried beans and guacamole (£5.50), whilst my partner tried the Adobo steak burrito, with limey cilantro rice, the addition of garlic and herb mushrooms, and green pepper and jalapeno

yoghurt dressing, along with salsa, beans and guacamole (£6). When our burritos arrived they were almost bursting at the seams, though safely wrapped up in tin foil so there was no risk of an explosion. The bourbon glazed pulled pork had moments of sweet honey that nicely contrasted with the heat from the spices. The garlic and herb mushrooms were full of flavour, and the garlic mixed well with the hot steak and cool lime and coriander rice. The tasty beans, chunky guacamole and salsa all added to the classic burrito experience. Evil Eye’s burritos were quite simply the tastiest burritos we had ever had, and at amazing value too. I had been eyeing up the churros with cinnamon sugar and chocolate dipping sauce earlier (£3.50), but we were too full from the burritos to even think about more food. Instead, we sat back and enjoyed the atmosphere and made plans for the next time we are going to visit.

AROUND THE CITY BAZAAR TO BE REJUVENATED AHEAD OF RELAUNCH CELEBRATIONS A Liverpool city centre based hub of independent traders will be ‘rejuvenated’ during a three-day closure next month, as it gets set for a special relaunch. The bric-a-brac filled window display of Duke Street Bazaar will be cleared to make way for colourful items being sold by the retail space’s 14 independent traders, which sell items ranging from crafts and curios to vintage, vinyl and antiques. Ahead of the 1-3 June closure, manager Sally Ayres explains: “We will be decorating, creating a changing room, adjusting the lighting to create more of an exploratory environment. We’ll be cleaning, scrubbing, painting, window washing and totally transforming the back of the shop which right now feels more like a warehouse than a shop.” The new-look bazaar will be unveiled from 5-8pm on 4 June, when the relaunch showcases each of the independent retailers’ businesses and offers cakes, bubbly and celebratory discounts. There will also be live musical entertainment in store as local college students sing at the front of the shop, and a classic vinyl DJ set takes place in the back area.

SOUND CITY ARRIVES AT TRANSFORMED DOCKLAND SITE Evergreen lines up new anti-aging treatments

Bramley Moore Dock is hosting Sound City for the first time Festival goers are getting set for a new-look Sound City, as the three-day event takes place at the waterfront’s Bramley Moore Dock for the first time. Organisers have spent months transforming the docklands site for the 22-24 May festival, which is relocating from its previous range of city centre venues. The Flaming Lips, Belle and Sebastian and The Vaccines are leading the line-up for 2015, as Sound City hosts a new outdoor stage, meanwhile the programme of performances will stretch across the site’s disused buildings and the Kaselot tall ship is set to provide an

impressive centrepiece, hosting parties and intimate shows. The performance offering is being accompanied by a two-day conference in the Rum Warehouse at Stanley Dock’s Titanic Hotel, which got underway on 21-22 May with speakers including Wayne Coyne and Edwin Collins, and also the launch of the Alan Wills Innovation Awards in honour of Deltasonic Records founder Alan Wills, who passed away last year. For more information about Sound City 2015, visit www.liverpoolsoundcity.co.uk.

Two new treatments are being launched this month by Liverpool’s Evergreen Clinic. From 28 May, the Liquid Gold Facelift and Five Point Cog Lift will be added to the offering at the Aigburth based clinic, which is located alongside Woodlands Spa, following the appointment of new aesthetic and anti-ageing treatments expert Yvonne Senior. Also known as PRP or the ‘vampire facelift’, Liquid Gold is said to ‘stimulate skin rejuvenation on the face, neck and décolletage’ using patients’ own growth factors. Meanwhile, the Five Point Cog Lift utilises a new injection technique in PDO (polydioxanone) thread lifting, which encourages the production of new collagen in the skin. JACKSON POLLOCK BLIND SPOTS ART

TATE LIVERPOOL JUNE - OCTOBER Tate Liverpool is getting set to shine the spotlight on another iconic artist this summer, as Jackson Pollock becomes the latest focus of a landmark showcase at the waterfront gallery. Blind Spots is the first exhibition in more than three decades to survey Pollock’s highly influential late paintings made between 1951 and 1953, referred to as his black pourings. The series of black enamel and oil paintings will be displayed alongside important paper and print works as well as virtually unknown and rarely seen sculptures. Glenn Ligon: Encounters and Collisions will also be presented alongside the Jackson Pollock exhibition, presenting an extraordinary group of artists who have influenced Ligon or with whom he feels and affinity.

GO LIVERPOOL

“THE CARGO SHIPS RAN FROM LIVERPOOL FOR A HUNDRED YEARS IT’S IMPORTANT TO BRING THE SHIPS BACK AND RECOGNISE AND SALUTE THE CITY WITHOUT WHICH CUNARD WOULDN’T EXIST”

As skipper of the Queen Mary 2, Captain Christopher Wells will play a key role in the spectacular Three Queens event, when Cunard’s three largest ships visit Liverpool on 25 May for an unforge able showcase. Here he tells Your Move about his career, his time on the iconic QE2 and how he’s preparing for the big day.

How did your career on ships begin? I ran away to sea to be a sailor after I finished my A Levels. I joined Shell Tankers as an apprentice and I was a deck cadet for four years and then a junior and a chief officer. I stayed with Shell for 16 years and sailed the world, particularly based out of the Far East. They were interesting times and very different ships from the iconic liners for which I now work.

You then moved on to working for Cunard… It was a mid-life crisis, when you decide there’s more to life than tankers. I took a chance and I was fortunate to attain a job on the QE2, which was my first Cunard ship. I met my wife on the QE2. My son was 13 months and he was on board. He took his first steps unaided on the helicopter deck of the QE2. That’s a long time ago, he’s 15 now and about to take his GCSEs!

Have you been to Liverpool before? I have been here on the Queen Mary but not as captain. The first time I was here on a Cunard ship was on the QE2 in 1993. We came in and anchored in-river as it was before the new passenger ships berth was built. I’ve also been here in the 1970s when I worked for Shell, we used to come in to the Mersey and I’d dock at Tranmere with the big 70,000 tonners. I’m older than I look!

What is your role at the Three Queens event? I’ll be master of the Queen Mary 2 and I’ll be bringing the ship into Liverpool on May 24.

Have the captains been practising for the event? We have our own simulator. Every day we drive the ship and we are practising manouvres. We conducted an exercise with all three ships together, from which some of the preview images for the 175th anniversary celebration were created. We did that exercise in Lisbon. We had all three ships together in the river, but we had the image taken when we were just outside the harbour. This time we’re going to be exercising our manouvre inside a river.

How do you see the ties between Liverpool and Cunard? I think it’s something special. Cunard was a huge company based here in Liverpool for 100 years and it was not just a passenger ship company, it was primarily a cargo company. It was based on the mail contract to deliver the mail to the colonies, to Canada and the US. The cargo ships ran from Liverpool for a hundred years. It’s part of our heritage, it’s part of Cunard’s history and backbone so it’s important to bring the ships back and recognise and salute the city, without which Cunard wouldn’t exist.
