EDITOR’S LETTER The summer holidays are here, so what better time to kick back and relax with a bumper edition of Your Move. In this issue we’ll not only be setting you up with a packed schedule of entertainment in our August and September Go Liverpool guide, but superstar DJ Fatboy Slim has taken time out of his hectic schedule to tell us all about his forthcoming Creamfields appearance and decades of music success. If that’s not enough, there’s also an exclusive look behind the plans for Lime Street’s regeneration and, following the recent Summer Budget announcement, we find out what’s next for social housing. And from houseboats to historic buildings, we explore some of the most unusual homes on the Liverpool market.

Have you picked up our NEW newspaper?

Abode Liverpool is going from strength to strength. We pride ourselves as a highly innovative estate agency who are growing at a fast pace. We were founded in 2012 by 4 property developers and professional landlords, who wanted to provide a service that they expected. The company has been so successful it now employs over 50 staff, has over 600 properties on the market for sale, and manages over 400 properties in lettings. Our owners are financial advisers

and we offer mortgages from the whole of the market. It is the only independent estate agent to offer full city coverage, with our stunning offices in Crosby and Allerton. We understand exactly what service a customer would like to experience when buying, selling or letting a home, and because of that understanding we treat our customers how we would like to be treated ourselves. We have a fantastic commitment to customer service, so much so we would like to think of ourselves as customer obsessed. This paper is the next stage in our journey. We are aware that we already advertise more than any other agent. We are consistently in the Echo, Merseymart, Your Move Magazine, Crosby Midweek visiter, and have a fantastic online presence with Zoopla and Rightmove. With this paper we will now put your property in 240,000 homes each and every year, an offering no other agent can or will match.

Our 2 awards

In all their glory at our awards party. Both received for customer service and both fully deserved!

For a free valuation call us on 0151 601 3003

What a night for us, we did the double

In all seriousness to win Best Estate Agency for Customer Service and Best Lettings Agency for Customer Service in my home city within 3 years of starting this business is phenomenal. We are chuffed. People thought I was slightly mad to open an estate agents in the middle of a recession but I knew what we had to do to be the best, and now our hard work and endeavour has got us

there. The award is a reflection of our ambition to be different to all other agents. This was an ambition of mine and was born out of frustration. The frustration of a property developer and landlord, who regularly used estate agents and wasn’t happy with service I was getting. So much so, I knew I could do it better and decided to open my own Estate Agents. Knowing and understanding what customers want is fundamental to where we are today. I want to thank all of our customers, for initially daring to choose a different agent with a different approach, and a special mention for all those who’ve recommended us to their friends and family. I also want to say a big thank you to all our staff, both past and present, from our apprentices to our management team, you’ve all contributed in your own way and we are extremely grateful.

Lime Street INTERVIEW WITH STEVE PARRY MANAGING DIRECTOR NEPTUNE DEVELOPMENTS

AS PROPOSALS TO TRANSFORM LIME STREET INTO A VIBRANT CITY GATEWAY ARE RESUBMITTED FOR PLANNING PERMISSION WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE TEAM BEHIND THE PLANS NEPTUNE DEVELOPMENTS TO FIND OUT MORE

What we’ve tried to do is to really capture the excitement of Lime Street in the past. It was a bit like a mini Piccadilly Circus or Times Square

“ 46 Your Move

HOW WOULD YOU SUMMARISE YOUR PLANS FOR LIME STREET? Steve Parry: There are a number of elements to it and the element that has come forward first, for which the planning application has been modified and resubmitted, is the one we call the Eastern terrace of Lime St. [Neptune’s original plans for the project, in collaboration with Regeneration Liverpool, were widely criticised earlier this year]. Effectively what we’re looking to do is to create a new frontage onto Lime Street which is going to have a combination of retail and leisure on the ground floor likely to be restaurants, café bars, etc, as well as shops and then on the upper floors we’ve got a hotel operator we are in quite late stages of negotiation with for a hotel with around 101 bedrooms. Behind that we will have a block of very high quality student accommodation. Obviously there’s a big debate in the city at the moment about the volume of student accommodation and the location of it. We’re of the view that it’s about the quality of the product but also the location and obviously the proximity to the railway station and the universities – as well as JMU’s proposals for the Royal Mail sorting office on Copperas Hill - it’s actually the place to be. We’ve looked in a great deal of detail whether

we could do anything with the Futurist building and the Futurist façade and we had two lots of structural engineers’ reports about that, which we’ve shared with the Save the Futurist people, and unfortunately it was beyond redemption so what we’ve tried to do is to really capture the excitement of Lime Street in the past. It was a bit like a mini Piccadilly Circus or Time Square with a lot of illumination, adverts and vibrancy particularly of a night. One proposal is to replicate the façade of the Futurist so you’ll actually see an image of the Futurist on the front façade and that will be backlit of a night. We’re also looking to feature some words on there that reflect the history of the street so there’s some artist involvement in that, that’ll be a condition on the planning. It’ll be interesting. It’ll be backlit at night so it’ll really stand out. We’re also working on the ABC and trying to turn that into an exciting venue. We’re working with (music entrepreneur) Mark Cowley. We have the idea of an auditorium with TV studios and restaurants inside and there’s a celebrity chef involved in that. What we’re hoping we can do, and obviously it’s not totally in our control because there are other ownerships involved, is lift Lime Steet from the doldrums. That’s what the idea is, to have an appropriate entrance to the city.

p43-64_p03-12 14/07/2015 11:17 Page 47

HOT TOPIC

YOU MENTIONED THE CAMPAIGNERS WHO WERE AGAINST THE PLANS PARTICULARLY THOSE INVOLVING THE FUTURIST BUILDING WHAT HAS MADE THEM COME ROUND TO THE PLANS? SP: There are people in life who campaign just for the sake of it but these people were genuinely keen on the building and what it stood for. The problem is a lot of people look at the outside and the façade looks a bit scruffy but you don’t realise how bad it is behind. I think they moved their position once they saw the structural engineers’ reports and they realised how bad it is. The whole place is unsafe. They weren’t keen on the original design because they didn’t think it reflected enough of the Futurist and the history of the city as a cinema location so when we came up with the proposal to use the façades to tell the story of Lime Street that’s when they realised our hearts were in the right place.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE EXISTING BUSINESSES? SP: Most of the businesses in Lime Street on the eastern side are already relocating. On the other side, we’re not proposing to relocate anyone and that’s in different ownerships but we have spoken to one or two of the business owners and one particular party who has got quite a prominent building on the corner has said as this is happening they are likely to reinvest in their building and the tenant is likely to reinvest. What you find with regeneration is other people invest in the area as well because people realise once a place starts improving they can move their business further upmarket and do a better job. WHAT HAS TAKEN SO LONG? SP: Lime Street as you know has been a point of contention with the people of Liverpool for a long time because of its condition. One of the problems over the years - and it has taken years and the process is still ongoing - has been to acquire all of the central properties. If you look along the street virtually every building was in separate ownership at one stage and then the previous people who did try and assemble the sites went in to receivership. So there’s been a lot of issues about buying in Lime Street. That’s been a real headache and that’s taken quite a few years. There are still one or two bits that are in the process of being acquired at the moment.

HOW WILL THE TALK SHOW ELEMENT WORK? SP: It’s a bit sensitive at the moment because there are a number of production companies involved. The auditorium itself works without the television aspect but that would be a real benefit and would really make a big difference to the image of the building but also the city. I know some very important names are involved. WHAT KIND OF EVENTS ARE YOU ENVISAGING FOR THE AUDITORIUM? SP: It’s a soundstage so primarily music. It fits into a different size range from some of the other venues in the city. It’s primarily a live music venue. It’s not a theatre, it doesn’t impact on the Royal Court or the Empire. CAN YOU REVEAL WHICH RESTAURANTS WILL BE INVOLVED? SP: Not yet. There are some discussions going on with a very well-known brand. A well-known celebrity chef. IF PLANNING PERMISSION IS GRANTED WHEN WILL WORK BEGIN? SP: Subject to finalising the deals on the remaining properties we’re looking to be starting the demolition towards the end of September with the buildings being completed for the summer of 2017. Advice from chartered accountants 0151 228 8977 Julia Casimo

Increasing tax burden for buy-to-let landlords There was very little good news in last week’s budget for Britain’s two million buy-to-let landlords, after the Chancellor unexpectedly cut tax relief for property investors. Here is our summary of the budget tax measures most likely to affect the buy-to-let sector.

Restriction of interest relief Currently finance costs (e.g. interest on mortgages and loans) are fully tax deductible from rental profits but in the future this is going to be severely limited. Between 2017/2018 and 2020/2021 higher rate tax relief for financing costs will be phased out. The upshot of this is that by 2020/2021 a landlord could be running a break-even rental business and still paying tax. This change will not apply to ‘furnished holiday lettings’, which operate under different rules and require a number of short lets during the year. This is a blow for buy-to-let landlords, especially if/when mortgage rates rise. Highly geared landlords with large portfolios will have particular issues. This mean more landlords may be better off incorporating their property businesses as the rules appear to capture only income tax relief and not corporation tax relief (although this is the kind of anomoly which is often corrected six months or a year after a budget).

Phasing out of Wear and Tear Allowance In April 2016, landlords who let out furnished property will lose the 10% wear and tear allowance, which will instead be replaced by a new system that only allows them to get tax relief when they replace furnishings. The 10% allowance was originally meant to reduce the administration burden for landlords who would otherwise need to claim for the actual cost of renewing furniture and white goods. This is a blow and will mean that landlords end up with more to do in terms of quantifying their tax bill and (in most cases) more tax to pay. It’s not quite clear what will happen for unfurnished properties where the renewals basis was recently phased out.

Increase in Rent-a-room relief Finally a bit of good news in that Rent-a-room relief for those who rent out a room in their own home will go up to £7,500 from £4,250 from April 2016.

HOME NEWS The new apartments at the Queens Dock site

SUTTON KERSH TO MANAGE ‘LANDMARK’ DEVELOPMENT Liverpool agent Sutton Kersh has been appointed to manage the city’s iconic West Tower apartment development.

THE KEEL ATTRACTS HIGH DEMAND FOLLOWING LAUNCH Major new apartment development The Keel is said to have proven a hit with potential developments following its launch last month. The 240 luxury homes within the private rented sector scheme, which will transform the former Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) building on Queens Dock, have attracted more than 200 enquiries and over 100 viewings since they were unveiled. Matthew Smith from Touchstone, which is marketing and managing the apartments at The Keel, says: “Customers are pointing out that a major selling point is that the building has an onsite management team and 24-hour security.” City Residential is also assisting in the marketing of the homes, which are being developed by investor Moorfield Group and development partner Glenbrook. The properties will also be accompanied by an on-site gym and managed by a single entity rather than many different private landlords. Works to convert the former office building are well underway, and over half of the apartments are now complete. Furnishing of the apartments will take place from early August and tenants will be able to move in from early autumn.

The 40-storey skyscraper, located in the heart of the commercial district, features 123 residential properties as well as the Panoramic restaurant inside. On announcing that Sutton Kersh has been assigned to look after the site, lettings and block management director Phil Lawton says: “We are extremely happy to be selected to manage this landmark development. The selection process was very thorough and we are looking forward to working closely with the residents to deliver a high quality service to ensure that this development remains one of the most sought after addresses in the city.” The contract, which is the latest to be added to Sutton Kersh’s block management portfolio spanning Merseyside and Chester, has also prompted the agent to expand its team in the department. Property manager Jackie Berggvist will be bringing more than eight years of industry knowledge and experience to the firm. For more information visit www.suttonkersh.co.uk

INDUST RY N EWS HAT-TRICK OF TOP AWARDS FOR MERSEYSIDE LETTING AGENT Merseyside agent Karl Tatler Lettings has scooped a trio of prestigious national awards. For the second year running the Wirral-based firm received the Gold award for Best Customer Service (small agency) category, as well as winning Silver for Best Property Management (201-500 properties), and a regional Silver prize for Best Small Northern Lettings Agency of the Year. The awards were presented to Karl Tatler Lettings by champion marathon runner Paula Radcliffe MBE, during a glittering ceremony in London. The presentation followed an extensive review of entries which included telephone interviews and independent mystery shopping exercises. The

winners were selected by a 20-strong judging panel of industry experts. Dave Seed, head of lettings at Karl Tatler, says: “Because we are judged on a period of 12 months, a keen focus on the customer experience for landlords and tenants needs to be at the core of the business to stand up to the scrutiny of the judges and the independent mystery shops. Retaining such a prestigious gold award for customer service and our successes in two other highly competitive categories is an honour.” The Lettings Agency of the Year Awards are held in association with The Sunday Times and The Times.

Success for first city design show Retailers in the North West were given the chance to view bespoke products from gift and homeware manufacturers at an exclusive event held by CRC Solutions. Taking place at the Hope Street Hotel, the two-day event gave retailers in the region the chance to purchase new products from leading international design companies for their own stores. CRC Solutions has hosted an event in the North West for the past four years but this was the first year it has been held in Liverpool. Organiser David Roberts, director of CRC Solutions, says “This year we decided to bring the event to our home city, giving customers and companies the opportunity to experience the first showing of the latest products, set against the stunning cityscape of Liverpool. “Far removed from the corporate blandness of a hotel conference suite, each customer who attended was wowed by the views of our beautiful city. “It was exciting to make Liverpool the choice for this launch and at such a fabulous hotel too. Retailers from across the north of England attended including Liverpool’s very own Utility, which has three stores in the city. The design companies involved included Umbra, Denmark brand Menu, Blomus (of Germany) and Kikkerland. CRC Solutions says it is planning to bring the show back to the city next year.

UPAD, Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors, Andrew Louis and Wilson Henry LLP will be leading the seminars at the show, which also brings exhibitors from across the industry together under one roof. Sponsored by Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors, the Landlord & Property Show is Merseyside’s only specialist landlord show. The Prom @ New Brighton, which includes 24 bespoke properties, will see its first residents move in during the following week having already attracted buyers for the majority of the apartments. Sue Taylor, founder of Almond Property which is marketing The Prom @ New Brighton, says: “The Prom apartments have proved very popular with buyers, in part due to the magnificent views across the Liverpool Bay and the innovative winter balconies. “We held a welcome event during the Three Queens spectacular to invite the new homeowners to the see the show homes and introduce the neighbours

ALMOST HALF OF ELLIOT GROUP’S NEW DEVELOPMENT LET More than 40 homes in The Artesian, Elliot Group’s latest residential development, have been let, the developer has revealed.

‘Crowley’s Angels’ took part in the Pretty Muddy event

LADIES FROM LIVERPOOL LAW FIRM GET MUDDY FOR CHARITY Staff from Liverpool’s Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors took on an obstacle-filled 5k challenge to raise money for Cancer Research. The team – dubbed ‘Crowley’s Angels’ – joined in the Pretty Muddy event at Sefton Park, and faced rope walls, cargo nets, muddy tunnels and puddles of mud as they made their way across the course. The participants were also drenched in water at the start of the race, which made challenges extra difficult. The firm’s fundraisers added to the entertainment on the day by donning matching t-shirts showing cancer that ‘hell hath no fury like a woman in pink.’ Behind the team’s decision to take part in the fundraising event was a shared personal connection to cancer. Many of the women at the firm have been affected by cancer in some way, whether through losing a family member or a friend. Crowley’s Angels had hoped to raise £500 for the cause but succeeded in raising over £1,000 so far with sponsors still coming in. Paula Satchell, a partner at Paul Crowley & Co, says: “It’s fantastic to see so many of our staff making a huge contribution to charity and putting aside their time to run for such a worthy cause.”

The scheme, which will see 99 studio apartments developed on the Jamaica Street site, is proving particularly popular with recent graduates from the city’s universities. Elliot Lawless, director of Elliot Group, says: “I think it’s the combination of top drawer fixtures and fittings, the all-in-one price and cracking location in the heart of Baltic that is making the scheme such a success”. Also included within the development are nine commercial units on the ground floor, each with a parking space. All nine have been let, with Elliot Group taking three for its new headquarters. The scheme, which completes in September, is the first of a number in the Baltic Triangle that Elliot Group is planning. Elliot adds: “We’ll be on site shortly on Norfolk Street and have begun ground investigation works for our £130m Heap’s Mill development, so it’s all systems go. Baltic is a fascinating neighbourhood with some stunning industrial architecture and room for high quality modern development, too. I think it’s going to evolve into one of the most interesting neighbourhoods in the city and I’m not surprised at the levels of take-up we’ve experienced with The Artesian.” Studios at The Artesian rent for £135 per week with all bills included and are available through agent Golding Estates. SOCIAL HOUSING IS VITAL TO FAMILIES ON LOW INCOMES OFFERING THEM HOMES AT AFFORDABLE RENTS WITH HOUSING ASSOCIATIONS WHO UNDERSTAND THEIR NEEDS WITH THE BUDGET SPELLING BIG CHANGES FOR THE SECTOR WE ASK

WHAT’S NEXT for

SOCIAL HOUSING?

I

n his Summer Budget Chancellor George Osborne announced some pretty seismic changes for social housing. Addressing the House of Commons in the first Conservative-only budget since 1996, the Chancellor revealed that from next year social housing rents will fall by 1% per year for the next four years, while for those people on higher salaries rents will rise. So-called ‘high earners’, on salaries of £30,000 will pay market rents for their properties. The Budget announcements follow a turbulent few years for the social housing sector with the controversial bedroom tax, introduced in 2013, presenting challenges. “These are uncertain times for social landlords and the changes announced in the budget could have an impact on their ability to invest in their stock and build new homes,” says Councillor Frank Hont, Liverpool’s cabinet member for housing. “This is in addition to the welfare changes and the bedroom tax which are squeezing tenants already struggling to get by. We will continue to work alongside our social housing providers to help them rise to the challenge, keep providing good quality, affordable housing and play an important role in improving our communities.” However, housing associations and providers across the region have vowed to stay committed to the cause of ensuring tenants and prospective buyers of affordable homes are put first. “In light of the Budget, the social housing sector has reacted with concern about the potential impact of the changes announced,” says Jennifer Bailey, sales and new business negotiator, Riverside Home Ownership. “But despite the challenges that lie ahead, it is imperative that housing associations continue the important work of providing affordable housing solutions. We must react by expanding our role to extend beyond providing support to those who rent but also to people who aspire to own their own home. Shared Ownership bridges the gap between renting and buying and provides an alternative affordable solution for people who may otherwise qualify for social housing. By buying a share of a property, and paying reduced rent on the remainder, shared

ownership allows people to access the market in an affordable and flexible way.” Indeed, Shared Ownership and the ever popular Help to Buy scheme are designed to help those borrowers who otherwise would not be able to afford home ownership and both are within reach for many social housing tenants. “Shared Ownership allows buyers to purchase shares for as low as 25% and means they only need a small mortgage and deposit,” says Sandy Kelly, head of Help to Buy North West. “This is a great way to get started as it allows the option to buy additional shares in the future and potentially increase to 100% ownership.

“Shared Ownership bridges the gap between renting and buying and provides an alternative affordable solution for people who may otherwise qualify for social housing.” “The Help to Buy equity loan scheme is also extremely popular, allowing purchasers to buy a new home with just a 5% deposit, 75% mortgage and a 20% equity loan from the government. There are over 200 developers offering Help to Buy in the North West, and as the Help to Buy agent for the region Plus Dane has helped over 5,000 people into home ownership since the scheme began in 2013.”

TALENT

FROM CHART-TOPPING RECORDS TO HEADLINING DJ SETS NOT TO MENTION NUMEROUS OTHER PROJECTS IN BETWEEN NORMAN COOK - AKA FATBOY SLIM - HAS BEEN DOMINATING DANCEFLOORS FOR DECADES WHEN THIS YEAR’S CREAMFIELDS FESTIVAL TAKES PLACE IN THE REGION HE’LL NOT ONLY BE AMONG THE LEADERS OF THE LINE-UP WITH HIS OWN PERFORMANCE BUT HE’LL ALSO BE BRINGING A WHOLE ARENA OF ACTS TO PERFORM AS HIS ‘SMILE HIGH CLUB’ SETS UP CAMP THE SUPERSTAR DJ TOOK TIME OUT OF HIS HECTIC SCHEDULE TO TALK ABOUT HIS PLANS FOR THE EVENT MILESTONE CAREER MOMENTS AND PERFORMING METRES OFF THE GROUND styles, but the information highway makes it hard to remain anonymous and record companies no longer require such complicated contracts!

INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

At next month’s Creamfields you’ll be hosting your own arena of acts for the first time, called the ‘Smile High Club’. Can you tell us a bit about the concept? The idea is to create a club within a festival rather than just a branded tent. We want it to have a vibe of friendliness and collective euphoria/stupidity achieved through random acts of smileyness occurring in and out of the arena. There will be many surprises but the day will begin with an attempt at the human smiley world record. Check social media for details of how to get involved! You’ll be leading the Smile High Club lineup with your own set too. What can fans expect? The same old acid house party nonsense. Hard but fair... You’ve got a history of playing Creamfields and other Liverpool Cream events, including the club’s 20th anniversary. Any favourite moments? At the first ever Creamfields the Gorillaz played behind a huge projection screen so no-one could actually see them. As I was going on next I had access to the stage so I could climb round the lighting rig, and I was the only one to actually watch what was really going on behind the screen. You were the first DJ to play the House of Commons and also performed on quite a unique giant illuminated octopus at the Olympics. If you could be the first to DJ in any other location or scenario, where would you choose? The favourite shows have been those on Brighton Beach and a huge observation tower is being built exactly where the stage was. Imagine the thrill of playing to a packed sun-kissed beach whilst going up and down 170 metres!

THE IDEA IS TO CREATE A CLUB WITHIN A FESTIVAL RATHER THAN JUST A BRANDED TENT. WE WANT IT TO HAVE A VIBE OF COLLECTIVE EUPHORIA

You’ve had huge success with both making your own studio albums and playing anthemic tracks to crowds as a superstar DJ. Which do you enjoy the most? Currently I am having way too much fun DJing to even get in the studio. That may be temporary but that’s how I roll right now. You’ve held the record for having the most UK top 40 singles under the most names. What’s been the benefit of working with so many different acts and pseudonyms? In the pre-digital age it was possible to have parallel careers under different names at the same time on different labels with different

What’s your biggest career moment and is there anything you’d still like to achieve? I think I’ve already been blessed with some absurdly spectacular moments. Never say never but I think I might have been to the mountaintop. I’d still like to score a whole film rather than contribute one track. It would have to be a very good film though. One can dream... Next year it will be 20 years since the release of your first Fatboy Slim record. Will you be planning to celebrate the anniversary in any way? Perhaps a small cake? I’m still working out how to celebrate my 30th year in the business before 2015 ends! I quit my day job in 1985. The industry and the way you work on your music must have changed a lot in that time. What’s had the biggest impact and how have you stayed at the top of the game? There have been two revolutions during my career. First is the maturing of dance music from underground nightclubs into the worldwide acceptance and popularity today. Secondly, the digital age has had an astounding impact on how we consume music. Ideas fly at such a breakneck speed round the world when before they would slowly osmose from one tribe to another. At the same time downloads and streaming mean more people have access to music but artists struggle to make a living from the tiny royalties. What are your plans beyond this summer’s festival season? A Dimbleby debate (I kid you not), big things in Mexico and I promise to try and get back in the studio at some point.

MILKSHAKES Milkshakes have become so popular that dedicated bars are opening across Liverpool to cater especially for the growing demand. They offer enormous shakes packed with all your favourite confectionary, as well as a huge variety of tempting treats and cakes to satisfy your sweet tooth. Here are three of the best milkshake parlours in the city.

SHOW STOPPING SHAKES Sblended, Liverpool ONE You’ll be blown away by the choices on offer at Sblended, where you can choose the flavour of your milkshake and then make it bigger and better with extra toppings and sauces. Whether you fancy Reese’s Pieces, Aero Mint or Terry’s Chocolate Orange, there’s an irresistible sweet on the menu for everybody. Sblended is ideally located opposite the Odeon, so you can grab a shake before a cinema showing.

SWEET STOP Shakes n Cakes, Pilch Lane, Childwall

This milkshake bar is dedicated to serving up tasty milkshakes with unique flavour combinations. Each milkshake is created with your favourite branded sweets, but you don’t have to stop at just a milkshake; there’s also a diverse range of delicious cakes and sweets on offer to leave you feeling fully satisfied. There’s also the option to sit in and enjoy your treats in sweet surroundings.

MIKSHAKE MADNESS Funky Shake Bar, Albert Dock Funky Shake Bar certainly does live up to its name with funky creations that will keep you coming back for more. You’ll be spoilt for choice with the amount of branded sweet flavours available, alongside a limitless selection of tasty treats to accompany your milkshake. You can also opt for dairy free with organic soya milk and ice cream, so nobody has to miss out on the ultimate shake.

THE VINCENT CAFÉ & COCKTAIL BAR

Exchange Flags, L2

You know how it goes. You wait years for a good restaurant in the commercial district and then three turn up at once! Hot on the heels of Fazenda Rodizio Bar & Grill and NYL at Aloft Liverpool, comes The Vincent Café & Cocktail Bar – a joint venture between businessman Paul Adams and Liverpool FC legend Steven Gerrard. Set within Exchange Flags, on the site of the former Sakura restaurant, The Vincent Café and Cocktail Bar is a standalone version of the restaurant in Paul’s Southport-based Vincent Hotel and, like its predecessor, sushi is a key feature of the menu. As a big sushi fan and with a distinct shortage of sushi restaurants within the city, this was a major plus for me. However, those people who don’t find the prospect of eating raw fish too appealing can still try out the delicacy as ‘Gringo’ sushi – a meat alternative to the seafood staple – is also available. Though intending to stick with the original, after perusing the menu online earlier in the day, curiosity got the better of my dining partner and I so it was with the Gringo sushi that we started our evening. I opted for the chilli beef

REVIEW BY CHRISTINE TONER

option (£5 for four pieces), on the basis that, with my Chinese takeaway favourite, I had a good chance of liking it. Slightly more adventurous, my friend chose the roasted crispy duck and mango (£5.50 for four pieces). Both dishes were delicious but the duck was a particular highlight, with generous slices of duck and chunky mango given a tasty twist with tempura batter served on sticky sushi rice. I could quite happily have dined on Gringo sushi all night, with the sausage and bacon tempura and chicken and lemongrass maki looking particularly intriguing but, having already made a mental note to come back and do just that, I decided to explore a bit more of the menu on this occasion and I’m pleased I did. My main course, the glazed duck breast with caramelised chicory, beetroot and pulled leg spring roll (£18) was a delicious choice with the mix of flavours complimenting each other much more than you might expect. The juicy beetroot worked perfectly with the Chinese-style spring roll while the duck melted in the

mouth and caramelised chicory was deliciously sweet and sticky. My friend chose the monkfish curry with ginger, almond, chilli jasmine rise and cucumber yoghurt (£14.50). With generous chunks of monkfish and a fresh and zingy flavour this beautifully presented dish was certainly a winner in her eyes. To round off our meal my friend chose the cheese board (£9.50) which included biscuits, chutney, grapes and salted almonds – as well, of course, as a varied selection of cheeses. I, on the other hand, embraced my inner child and opted for the flaming smores board (£8). A fabulously gimmicky dessert, it comes with a live flame for toasting marshmallows, biscuits, ice cream and – best of all – caramel and chocolate dips. While Bold Street may have the monopoly on boho eateries in the city centre, if it’s a more high end dining experience you’re after the commercial district is fast becoming the place to be and, despite being the newcomer on the block, The Vincent is already one of its stars.

ACTION FROM EXHIBITIONS EXPLORING THE WORK OF INTERNATIONAL ICONS TO PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS AND AN EVER GROWING CALENDAR OF CREATIVE EVENTS IT SEEMS THAT NOW MORE THAN EVER THE EYES OF THE ART WORLD ARE FIRMLY ON LIVERPOOL’S BUZZING SCENE THE CITY HAS LONG BEEN RENOWNED AS A THRIVING HUB FOR ART THOUGH AND WITH THIS IN MIND WE TAKE A LOOK AT HOW GALLERIES AND ORGANISATIONS ACROSS THE AREA HAVE BEEN ACTING AS A MAGNET FOR THE CULTURAL SPOTLIGHT WHILST PAVING THE WAY FOR EMERGING TALENT

In recent weeks alone, Liverpool’s major gallery spaces have become somewhat of a who’s who of renowned 20th Century artists, as new exhibitions and more permanent works have been installed. Tate Liverpool welcomed the arrival of its landmark look at Jackson Pollock’s ‘black pourings’, while the Walker Art Gallery has just unveiled ‘REALITY: Modern and Contemporary British Painting’ – a celebration of some of the most influential painters of the past six decades. And as if showcasing works by the likes of Lucian Freud, LS Lowry and David Hockney isn’t enough, the venue has also made room to host a drawing by Pablo Picasso, which has been gifted to National Museums Liverpool by Arts Council England as part of the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. Entitled ‘Study for Temptation of St Anthony’ (1909) and formerly owned by Lucian Freud, the drawing went on display on 14 July as part of the gallery’s new ‘Picasso on Paper’ showcase. For the Walker in particular, exhibitions featuring high profile artists often sit on the programme alongside events that recognise emerging artists and what’s important in British painting today, such as the prestigious John Moores Painting Prize. “We’re extremely fortunate in Liverpool to have such a vibrant arts scene, and the Walker Art Gallery - which has supported contemporary art since it opened in 1877 - is very much at its centre,” says Ann Bukantas, head of fine art at National Museums Liverpool. “In hosting the John Moores Painting Prize, now in its 59th year, the Walker has long had its finger on the pulse of contemporary art, championing emerging artists as well as those who are more established in their careers. 78 Your Move

“Our current temporary exhibition, REALITY: Modern and Contemporary British Painting, is a prime example of why the arts scene here is thriving, and why there is a real buzz about Liverpool. As well as looking back at iconic artists such as Sickert, Lowry, Freud and Hockney, the exhibition is a wonderful showcase of contemporary painting in Britain today.” Meanwhile Tate Liverpool’s current attention grabbing Jackson Pollock display is the latest in a line of art attractions which have brought internationally renowned names not only to the city but to the North West for the first time, once again reaffirming Liverpool’s prominent position on the cultural map. “Since Tate Liverpool opened in 1988 we have been at the heart of positive change in the city,” explains Andrea Nixon, executive director at Tate Liverpool. “We are home to the national collection of modern and contemporary art in the north of England and play a crucial role in the success of the city region. We have a history of staging pioneering and world-class exhibitions that bring major artists to the North West for the first time including Andy Warhol, Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian and our latest exhibition Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots which will tour internationally.” But for such large organisations, it’s not all about the headlining exhibitions. For instance, Tate is a key player in a network of art institutions across the city and regularly fulfils a role in city-wide events, whilst also showing support for new talent. “From joint programming with institutions such as FACT and Liverpool Biennial we also have close partnerships with academic institutions including Liverpool John Moores University, Edge Hill University and Hope

University in order to support young creative and artistic talent in the region ensuring the Liverpool arts scene continues to thrive,” adds Andrea. Meanwhile another Liverpool gallery which has which has long had a reputation for providing a platform for new artists is Bluecoat, where gallery spaces sit alongside studios and exhibitions take visitors away from more familiar, highly influential names to explore the “new and experimental”. "Liverpool has held its own as a visual arts destination, especially since Capital of Culture, though of course a contributing factor in getting that accolade was the vibrant scene already here, which has deep roots,” according to Bryan Biggs, artistic director at Bluecoat. “There have, for instance, been artists working in studios at the Bluecoat since 1907! “For the last century or so we have nurtured emerging artists, both in our studios and in exhibitions, often at an early stage in their career (including several Turner Prize winners). Our new exhibition, Resource, continues that support, while literally providing a set of resources for visitors. And local audiences’ appetite for the new and experimental is also part of Liverpool’s reputation as an art city. “To stay competitive, though, we need to increase the number and quality of our working artists and develop our production base, helping create a visual arts ecology where higher education, artistic practice, critical discourse and galleries feed off each other more. Importantly we need people to buy art." Outlets to purchase art are seemingly another area of the city’s scene which is currently on the rise. For instance Liverpool Art Fair, which is developed by dot-art and held its 2015 event in May, has been growing since 2012 and is now a popular fixture on the North West’s calendar as it allows around 100 artists to showcase work for sale. Whilst in June, the second Liverpool Contemporary Arts Fair took place, bringing work from British and international galleries and showcasing both emerging and established artists. Held within the landmark Royal Liver Building, the event offered an opportunity to view and buy art, and also drew further interest with its display of an exclusive collection by L.S. Lowry worth over £3 million.

Venues & Collectives As the city’s big name organisations are continuing to attract the crowds by shining a spotlight on some of the most influential artists, Liverpool is also seeing artist-led collectives and venues continue to grow and evolve. Ellie Barrett, a current director of The Royal Standard – an artist-led gallery, studios and social workspace located within a large industrial northern docklands space, having originally formed in a former Toxteth pub in 2006 – believes such groups are “more responsive to change and emerging theory and aesthetic”. The Royal Standard itself has not only been undergoing some of its biggest developments to date in 2015, having secured charitable status which will “open many doors” and hosted its “largest and most ambitious project” so far with BamBamBam – an event which saw 21 studio members show work in as many days – but it is also seeing members embark on their own studio and gallery space ventures in the city. As Ellie points out, one collection of Royal Standard artists set about putting together a space named Crown Building Studios earlier this year having “identified a lack of smaller, more emerging spaces,” and a trio of members attracted a buzz in late 2014 when they launched a pop-up space. With “exciting and active practice at the foreground”, Ellie says Liverpool is “an excellent city to be an artist at any point in their career”.
