EDITOR’S LETTER Liverpool has long been home to a thriving student population, and lately property developers have been realising the potential of creating high quality student accommodation in the city centre. As Liverpool City Council continues a review into the increasing central offering of student homes, we ask experts whether or not there is now too much accommodation in the area. And as arts organisations turn to the public to help fund new projects across Liverpool, we look at some of the most exciting and successful cultural crowdfunding campaigns in the city right now. If that’s not enough, best-selling ‘Cloud Atlas’ author David Mitchell chats to Your Move about his inspirations, Merseyside connections and forthcoming books as he prepares for a Liverpool event.

GLENROSE ROAD, WOOLTON, L25 Striking and spacious, this Grade II-listed three-bedroom home is steeped in original character. Beautifully leaded light windows make an impact alongside dramatic dark wooden features, ornate ceilings and chandeliers, whilst looking out onto the property’s large gardens with mature trees and retained borders. Having been split into three separate residences in the 1960s, the original South Liverpool house dates back to the 1850s.

Have you picked up our NEW newspaper?

Abode Liverpool is going from strength to strength. We pride ourselves as a highly innovative estate agency who are growing at a fast pace. We were founded in 2012 by 4 property developers and professional landlords, who wanted to provide a service that they expected. The company has been so successful it now employs over 50 staff, has over 600 properties on the market for sale, and manages over 400 properties in lettings. Our owners are financial advisers

and we offer mortgages from the whole of the market. It is the only independent estate agent to offer full city coverage, with our stunning offices in Crosby and Allerton. We understand exactly what service a customer would like to experience when buying, selling or letting a home, and because of that understanding we treat our customers how we would like to be treated ourselves. We have a fantastic commitment to customer service, so much so we would like to think of ourselves as customer obsessed. This paper is the next stage in our journey. We are aware that we already advertise more than any other agent. We are consistently in the Echo, Merseymart, Your Move Magazine, Crosby Midweek visiter, and have a fantastic online presence with Zoopla and Rightmove. With this paper we will now put your property in 240,000 homes each and every year, an offering no other agent can or will match.

Our 2 awards

In all their glory at our awards party. Both received for customer service and both fully deserved!

What a night for us, we did the double

In all seriousness to win Best Estate Agency for Customer Service and Best Lettings Agency for Customer Service in my home city within 3 years of starting this business is phenomenal. We are chuffed. People thought I was slightly mad to open an estate agents in the middle of a recession but I knew what we had to do to be the best, and now our hard work and endeavour has got us

there. The award is a reflection of our ambition to be different to all other agents. This was an ambition of mine and was born out of frustration. The frustration of a property developer and landlord, who regularly used estate agents and wasn’t happy with service I was getting. So much so, I knew I could do it better and decided to open my own Estate Agents. Knowing and understanding what customers want is fundamental to where we are today. I want to thank all of our customers, for initially daring to choose a different agent with a different approach, and a special mention for all those who’ve recommended us to their friends and family. I also want to say a big thank you to all our staff, both past and present, from our apprentices to our management team, you’ve all contributed in your own way and we are extremely grateful.

Questions & Answers with John Arrowsmith Question… Who are Liverpool Residential ? Answer. We opened our doors seven years ago when the property market had peaked and have seen a substantial growth year on year even through the recession. Our dedicated team is lead by myself and the other owners. We offer a really personal & professional service to our customers which larger agents can’t offer.

Question... How can you sell my property for less than other agents ? Answer. Over recent years the property market has changed significantly, 95% of all property searches now start online, meaning having an office on the major high street such as Allerton Road is no longer necessary. Our office which is located in Garston Village might not have the same footfall as Allerton Road, but when you look at the statistics and look at how people now search for property we are not at a disadvantage to any other agent and are able to pass on the savings we make to our customers.

Question… Where will you advertise my property ? Answer. When listing your property for sale or to let we advertise on the two major property websites, Rightmove & Zoopla which produce 85% of enquiries that we receive. We still also use traditional methods including for sale boards and printed publications such as the your move magazine. We also have a huge database of people searching for property all over Liverpool.

Question… Why should I Use Liverpool Residential ? Answer. Whether you are selling or letting we guarantee that you wont get the same level or quality of service for less. If you can find anyone cheaper we will match any like for like sales or lettings fee.

Secondly we don't use sneaky tactics to get you to list your property with us. Some agents will give you a really high valuation to get you to list your property with them, then tie you into a 3 month contract, not get any interest in your property and then get you to reduce the price in order to achieve a sale. We believe in giving you an honest & accurate valuation with comparables of properties which have recently sold or let. We are so confident in our service that we wont tie you into an agreement, so If you are not happy with our services you are free to walk away at anytime with out penalty.

WORDS BY CHRISTINE TONER

ALAN BEVAN MANAGING DIRECTOR CITY RESIDENTIAL

The popularity of Liverpool as a place to study, coupled with the city’s universities continued rise up the national rankings, has persuaded many developers to construct purpose built student schemes. Whilst we have previously voiced our concerns on the number of schemes in the pipeline, the more important question is are we building the right type of scheme in the right location? Indeed one of the main focus points of the recently convened student task force panel (on which we sat) was to ensure that future student development in the city is “appropriate” to the likely demands from students. With student numbers unlikely to grow much over the next few years (even with the removal of the numbers cap) developers are definitely carrying out more extensive market due diligence. The expected increase in overseas and international students (at the expense of local/UK students) will also force developers to consider their product/locations more carefully than perhaps has been the case in the past. There is no doubt that some of the older, less well located stock that is unable to compete on price may well be the first casualties of the increase in supply although there is still a very strong demand for the affordable end of the market in the city as long as it is well located.

BILL ADDY CHIEF EXECUTIVE LIVERPOOL BID

What we need to emphasise is that, as a city, we recognise we have three great universities, six within a short distance of the city. Knowledge is a key economic driver in the city, therefore we should encourage students. It’s great to see that students are coming in to live in the city centre in well managed secure environments which a lot of the new properties are. That’s what we should actively encourage but obviously we have 48 Your Move

EARLIER THIS MONTH REPRESENTATIVES FROM STUDENT DEVELOPER AND RESIDENT GROUPS ACROSS THE CITY CAME TOGETHER TO DISCUSS ONE KEY ISSUE – THE SUSTAINABILITY AND IMPACT OF STUDENT ACCOMMODATION DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE CITY CENTRE IT’S A TOPIC THAT HAS DIVIDED THE CITY PROMPTING LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL TO ANNOUNCE A REVIEW INTO ITS VIABILITY EARLIER THIS YEAR CHAIRED BY COUNCILLOR FRANK HONT LIVERPOOL’S CABINET MEMBER FOR HOUSING THE REVIEW GROUP WAS TASKED WITH COMING UP WITH A SELECTION OF RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PLANNING DECISION MAKERS WITH A REPORT DUE LATER IN AUGUST WE’VE PUT TOGETHER OUR OWN PANEL OF EXPERTS TO FIND OUT

to make sure we don’t over dominate areas so we don’t see students take over areas that have been traditionally residential or students taking over commercial areas. I think the balance is right at the moment. Currently students are based on the edge of the city centre, in areas such as Ropewalks, Chinatown and Islington. They’re the places where historically we haven’t had a lot of development. From a business point of view – it’s great for city centre businesses. Not only do our retailers and restaurants get the customer, it’s a ready supply of staff. Is there an over-supply of student accommodation? At the moment, I don’t think so.

HOT TOPIC

STEVE PARRY MANAGING DIRECTOR NEPTUNE DEVELOPMENTS

CLLR FRANK HONT CABINET MEMBER FOR HOUSING

We spent three days (during the review) talking to landlords, developers, student groups, universities and, most importantly, residents who live near these large accommodation blocks. What you’ve got to bear in mind is within the contracts of the planning regulations the planning committee which approves plans for those types of developments is an independent

committee. It takes its decisions independently so as a council we can’t influence the decisions of the planning committee. What we can do is produce this report so that when they take individual planning decisions they’re better informed. They will have to take the decisions on a case by case basis but those decisions will be better informed as a result of this review. As I said at the opening of every day of the review, of course we welcome students, they bring all kinds of benefits and they’re a massive part of our economy. In no way should this be viewed as an anti-student view. It’s about getting the balance right.

There is still capacity for further good quality student development, particularly in the city centre, and we see it as an aid for regeneration. The issues are about quality and, in particular, location. Our view is a concentration of student accommodation in and around the knowledge quarter is the real trick to this and it acts as regeneration itself. Lime Street, for example, is a regeneration scheme that has reasonably large element of student accommodation but has other uses as well so you end up with a mix of uses on the site. The city centre has become more attractive. There’s a migration of students into the city from areas such as Smithdown Road where, historically, students went. So the question is almost about what happens with those areas? It’s about taking a step back looking at the best location for students but also looking at what happens in the areas that are less popular with students now? One of the things we’re keen on is to make sure the student accommodation we’re developing is institutionally acceptable. Obviously there are a couple of models. One of which is individual sales of student units to individual investors which is a valid model but I think our preference is to get things which are owned by larger investors who can afford to maintain and keep standards up in the future. NEWS END OF YEAR COMPLETION FOR BELEM TOWER HOMES The first phase of Liverpool’s Belem Tower development is due for completion in December, as work on the new apartments continues to progress.

How the Belem Tower apartments will look

According to the scheme’s sole agent, IPS Invest, the transformation of the 11-storey building, which overlooks the Grade II-listed Sefton Park with views across the city and towards the Welsh Hills, is now “full steam ahead” after work previously restarted following a short delay earlier in the year. The sales team at the site is also said to have “a lot of appointments booked in” as potential buyers and investors continue to express interest in the 63 one, two and three-bedroom homes; a number of which have become available at a reduced £77,000 price until the end of August. Parking for some residents as well as wifi and modern intercom systems are among the features of the properties, which are set to breathe new life into the post-war building. An on-site sales office is open Thursday to Sunday at Belem Tower. For more information call 0151 345 3180.

ATRIUM’S ST ELPHIN’S VIEW HOMES ATTRACT QUICK SALES Liverpool-based developer, Atrium has welcomed the first residents to its luxury St Elphin’s View development. Phase one of new homes at the site, located close to the villages of Daresbury and Hatton, was completed earlier in July and transformed disused milking sheds on a dairy farm once owned by the Daresbury Estate into six two and three-bedroom cottages. Just one of the first phase homes, which are equidistant between Liverpool and Manchester, remains available as three of the properties have been sold and a further two reserved with owners set to move in over the coming weeks. Jayne Holley, general manager of Atrium, says: “We’re really pleased that the houses have been snapped up so quickly, with the build quality and great location, in a rural setting yet connected to two major cities, being cited as a reason why buyers have been so interested.” A show home will open at the development in September, allowing potential buyers to the view phase two properties. The second stage of the scheme will offer five fourbedroom detached new-build luxury homes. The St Elphin’s View homes

The successful Help to Buy Show Manchester

The free event, taking place at the waterfront’s BT Convention Centre, follows on from the successful Help to Buy Show Manchester earlier this year which saw nearly 1,000 people attend. Hosted by Plus Dane, the government appointed agent for Help to Buy North West, the show will bring together 30 expert exhibitors from across the industry to offer advice and information on Help to Buy’s equity loan and mortgage guarantee schemes. Everything from legal and financial guidance to information on the latest property developments across the region will be available on the day. Sandy Kelly, head of Help to Buy North West, says: “The show really is a unique opportunity for prospective buyers to be able to speak to a range of advisers under one roof about purchasing a new home in a non-pressurised environment. Visitors will get the chance to meet financial advisers, legal representatives and agents from different housing developments to find out more about Help to Buy and the process of buying a house.” To date Help to Buy, which offers an opportunity to buy a new-build home with just a 5% deposit, has helped almost 94,000 people take their first step onto the property ladder. NEWS Joseph Williams Mews

ANDREW LOUIS TO HOST INVESTORS’ OPEN EVENING Liverpool agent Andrew Louis will welcome new and experienced property investors for an evening of advice and information.

FINAL SHARED OWNERSHIP HOME REMAINS AVAILABLE AT BELLE VALE SCHEME An over 55s development in Belle Vale is said to have attracted “incredible” interest from buyers, as just one home remains available through the Shared Ownership scheme. Riverside Home Ownership has sold 13 of the 14 apartments and bungalows on offer through the affordable initiative at its Joseph Williams Mews site, following the launch of the homes last December. With a final two-bedroom, first floor apartment remaining available to buy, Catherine Corkish, sales and new business negotiator at Riverside Home Ownership, says: “The success of the Joseph Williams Mews development has been incredible. With a high specification and a modern open plan design, it’s no surprise that practically all of the shared ownership homes have been bought and there’s just one property remaining. I’m sure it won’t be long before this home is snapped up too!” Alongside the homes, which aim to provide a comfortable lifestyle in a secure environment, the retirement development is also set to feature an on-site community café where neighbours can socialise with each other and the wider community.

The 20 August event, taking place at the company’s city centre branch on Stanley Street, will offer expert help on local rents and yields to lettings market trends. Plus, potential investors can also meet buy-to-let specialists from Knight Knox during the open evening, as well as independent mortgage advisors from Lifetime Wealth Management. Andrew Louis’ managing director, Louis Anastasiou, says: “Liverpool is going through a period of strong demand at the moment. It’s becoming a hotspot for investment, particularly with the increasing tourism economy too.” The open evening will also offer guidance to potential investors over the age of 55 who now have access to larger sums from their pension pot, following new pension freedoms introduced in April this year. The event will take place from 5-7pm. For further details call 0151 330 5333.

The final property is available to buy for £23,750 for a 25% share. Louis Anastasiou

Residential lots bring auction figure to more than £4.1m The South Drive lot

A residential investment on South Drive in Wavertree was the highest performing lot at Sutton Kersh’s latest auction. The three-storey semi-detached property, which has been converted into 12 letting rooms, sold for £290,000 off a guide of £250,000 at the Mariott Hotel event in Liverpool city centre. It has potential to produce income of over £45,000 per annum when fully let, a possible gross return of over 15%. The property was among the 70% of the auction’s 85 lots which sold, including 19 prior to the sale, and proceeds of more than £4.1 million were generated with the final figure expected to increase.

Cathy Holt, head of auctions at Sutton Kersh, says: “We are already receiving numerous enquiries for lots which just failed to sell on the day. We will discuss any realistic offers with our vendors and advise them on the best course of action.” Other highlights during the event included a residential investment on Stanley Park Avenue South in Walton, which sold for £49,000 off a guide price of £30,000 to £35,000. Sutton Kersh’s next auction will take place on 10 September at the Crowne Plaza, Princes Dock., Liverpool. The closing date for entries is 14 August. TALENT RECOGNISED AS ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL NOVELISTS OF THIS GENERATION AINSDALE-BORN DAVID MITCHELL HAS PRODUCED A NUMBER OF EXTRAORDINARY NOVELS SUCH AS NUMBER DREAM CLOUD ATLAS AND HIS MOST RECENT OFFERING THE BONE CLOCKS HIS WORK HAS BEEN NOMINATED FOR PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS AND HAS EVEN BEEN ADAPTED FOR THE BIG SCREEN BUT THE AUTHOR REMAINS HUMBLE ABOUT HIS ASTOUNDING SUCCESS WE SPOKE TO DAVID ABOUT MEMORIES OF MERSEYSIDE HIS OWN INSPIRATIONS FOR WRITING AND EXCITING PLANS FOR FUTURE NOVELS

INTERVIEW BY CONNIE PERRYMAN

What was the inspiration for your most recent novel The Bone Clocks? There isn’t really one easy answer but if there has to be it’s probably the fact that I was growing older. I wanted to run a thought experiment along the lines of if you didn’t have to age, if you could stay young and healthy and have as much time as you wanted for the rest of your life, what would you be prepared to pay? It’s not so much an inspiration, it’s that question and from that came a book where this deal is on the table, you can sign on that dotted line if you want, but of course there is a price. You’re originally from Southport; do you still have links to the area? I was born in Ainsdale in a little house down Waterfoot Avenue; I haven’t been back for many years though. My earliest memories are a foot bridge going over the railway tracks to Southport and walking down to the beach. I’ve been to Liverpool a few times; I’ve supported Liverpool all my life. Liverpool, Southport, Ainsdale, they’re the beginning of my life and a lot has happened since we moved down to Worcestershire when I was about six, but you can’t reboot earliest memories. You’ve lived in Italy and Japan. Have your own experiences of travelling influenced the different countries featured in your work? More than influenced, they gave me the material for them; I couldn’t have written the books I have done had I not lived in the countries I’ve lived in. I like to think I would still have been a writer but I would have written about different countries and maybe in some ways the books will have been different. You’re coming to Liverpool in August, how does it feel coming back to Merseyside as a best-selling author? Liverpool is always just a little bit special however I come back, it’s not that I’m pleased with myself, it’s not that I’m one of the Beatles coming back to Liverpool. You do your best in the line of work that you are engaged in and move through your life doing the best you can. I’d almost leave the

author bit out of it, it’s nice to reconnect with a part of the world that you once lived in and to see what’s changed. I like the company of northerners; you are a more direct, more honest, more open audience I feel. Northerners never fake anything which is what I like about being in the North. This isn’t just true of Liverpool, but the fact that I do have this historical connection with Liverpool, Southport and the area does make it a bit special. The film adaptation of ‘Cloud Atlas’ was a huge success, how do you feel about your work being adapted into a film? Is it visually what you expected when you were writing the novel? You don’t write a novel expecting it to be a film, you can do but if you do it’s not going to be a very good novel. If you mean does the film correspond with how I was imagining it when I was writing the scene, the weird answer is I can no longer remember because it has been replaced by the film. When I was writing a section about a publisher called Tim Cavendish who is played by Jim Broadbent in the film, I must have had an idea in my head about what Tim Cavendish looked like, but I can’t remember it because it’s been replaced by Jim Broadbent. I don’t have a problem with that because he is a great actor. Are there any plans to adapt ‘The Bone Clocks’ into a film? Yeah there are, I need to be circumspect about the details but it’s going to be a TV series so long form, small screen, probably six or seven episodes of an hour each. That’s the idea anyway, whether it comes to fruition or not you never know in the film world. The Bone Clocks has been nominated for numerous awards and was long listed for the Man Booker Prize in 2014; did you ever think that you would reach such success? I suppose I used to daydream about it, but I didn’t know anything about it until I got more disciplined about writing. I was just working on the books. I think that’s the deal, you work on the books and neglect other areas of your life, including if necessary your family and your loved ones which you have to make up for later. You’ve got to pour your mind, your soul, your attention, your time above all into your books to make them work. You’ve just got to make them good and then hopefully good things will happen. If you spend time thinking what level of success am I going to achieve with this I think it undercuts the work.

WATERSTONES WILL BE HOSTING AN EVENING WITH DAVID MITCHELL ON THURSDAY AUGUST AT OH ME OH MY WATER STREET FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT WWW WATERSTONES COM/EVENTS

Do any of your novels or characters stand out as your favourite? My next book has got to be the best one. If I feel that the book I’m working on isn’t as good as the one before, that means I haven’t got the book right yet, so I’ve got to start again or work out what’s wrong with it or put it away for a week and not think about it, then come back with fresh eyes. You’ve become a critically acclaimed author; do you have any literary influences for your own work? Pretty much anything I’ve ever read is an influence. If it’s brilliant then I want to work out why it’s brilliant, and how I can emulate that. Books that urged me to become a writer, which lit a fever in me to do to other people what books have done to me, would be books I read as a kid, things like Watership Down or Ursula Le Guin’s fantasy novels. Do you have any plans or ideas for your next novel? Always, not just the next one but the one after that. It’s a question of marshalling them all and departmentalising them all so that they don’t all crowd at me like a bar of angry drinkers one minute before closing time. I’ve got a new book coming out in October called Slade House; I’m just putting a few finishing touches to that at the moment. That’s what I’m working on now but after that I’ve got about four or five different ideas for books, I’m not sure which one I’ll go with yet.

WORDS BY NATASHA YOUNG

IN RECENT YEARS WIDESPREAD CUTBACKS HAVE BROUGHT TOUGH TIMES FOR ARTS FUNDING BUT AS A CITY THAT’S RENOWNED FOR ITS CULTURE LIVERPOOL IS FINDING ITS OWN WAY TO RETAIN UNIQUE ATTRACTIONS AS WELL AS CREATING NEW ONES

The use of crowdfunding initiatives has recently been making an impact across the city, as the powerful tool has seen a number of projects gather support from thousands of individuals and organisations. Crowdfunding sees campaigners secure necessary cash by asking

large numbers of people to pledge smaller amounts of money in order to eventually reach a target total, usually via the internet. Around the world it has been used to fund a wide range of businesses and ventures, and right here in Liverpool the arts and cultural sectors have helped to truly bring its full potential to light.

In recent weeks, directors of The Kazimier became the latest to successfully crowdfund an arts project, having exceeded an £8,000 goal for their Invisible Wind Factory production. After initially launching the idea inside a disused northern dockland space last December, staging an “experimental show portraying a vision of an alternative reality, powered by the unseen energy of ‘Invisible Wind’,” the team behind it set about taking their project to the next level. With the prospect of improving the show by remaking it and increasing its size and scope, planning to showcase it in Liverpool before taking it on a UK and European tour in 2016, 177 backers gave donations through Kickstarter ranging from a few pounds to several hundreds. Such was the support for the show - which will also be funded by Arts Council England, investment from its creators and revenue from performances - that the final crowdfunding total reached £9,232 to help foot the bill for construction, research, materials, artist fees, technology, marketing and the staging of the spectacle.

LIFESTYLE

Following a petition last year to secure the historic St Luke’s ‘Bombed Out’ Church’s future as an iconic public space venue amid fears it would be sold, a campaign was launched to raise funds that would not only contribute to ‘muchneeded maintenance’ of the site but also to help it achieve its full cultural potential. Curator Ambrose Reynolds and his team had hoped to collect £18,000 to fund plans including an indoor space for classes and sessions, a cafe area made from up-cycled materials, a rain shelter to allow events to go ahead in wet weather and the purchase of a PA system. However within 56 days, 549 backers pledged £20,260 to the cause. “Money aside, it gave us confidence because we knew people believed in what we’re doing and that inspires confidence and faith that people are behind you, especially when you get past the target and think ‘OK, people really love this and they really want it to succeed’,” says Ambrose. According to the curator, the funding will help the church to continue work that “improves the quality of peoples’ lives,” be it through enhancing entertainment for the public, or the help it offers to the homeless people who gather outside of the site – work that wouldn’t necessarily be funded by the likes of the Arts Council. The Bombed Out Church is currently in the midst of a packed summer programme which has seen it stage vintage fairs, music gigs and dance parties as well as a run of events underneath a glass roof. “Well [the crowdfund] got us going and then we’ve been doing various things, some of which are commercial and some which lose money but are worth doing, like stuff with the homeless

guys,” explains Ambrose. “That’s one side of what we do and then on the other side you’ve got music festivals where people are celebrating life and enjoying themselves.” The Bombed Out Church’s crowdfunding plight has also helped boost its online presence, further highlighting it as a unique attraction for visitors from outside of the city. “If you come from abroad for a day trip to Liverpool and find a fascinating place that’s pretty much abandoned but still alive, a place that’s ruined but there’s still life within the ruin, that’s had people in tears and people have been coming from Azerbaijan and Mexico,” adds Ambrose. “They’ve seen it online and said ‘We’ve only come to Liverpool to see your church, and then we’ll go to see Beatles sites and then go and look at Anfield’. “It’s starting to become a place to visit, a place where there’s a different thing on every day.” Along with a recently announced closure for three months in September to allow a Liverpool City Council and Heritage England-funded £150,000 restoration project to take place, the local authority will also launch a major public consultation into the building’s longer term role. Ambrose believes that, following both the petition and the crowdfunding process, support for his group’s work at the church is evident, and he welcomes the possibility the consultation will “bring out lots of other ideas”. “Really it’s the same ethos as crowdfunding, to ask people what they want and give them an opportunity to say ‘I hate this, I love that, I want this to go on and I don’t want that to go on’.”

FLYOVER

“WE’RE PLANNING A PROGRAMME OF WORKSOPS AND ACTIVITIES WHICH ARE ABOUT OCCUPYING THE SPACE UNDER [THE FLYOVER] AND ABOVE IT, IT’S VERY EXCITING.”

Elsewhere in the city the Friends of the Flyover campaign, proposing to transform a flyover that has been earmarked for removal into a ‘promenade in the sky’ – a lively hub of green spaces, activities, retailers, cafes and market stalls - achieved a £43,809 crowdfunding total last year from 344 supporters, helping to progress the ambitious project through its feasibility stage. “It enabled us to do a lot of the structural survey work that we need to do pre-planning application for the whole project and a test event where we closed the flyover for the day and had lots of people up there,” says Kate Stewart from We Make Places, a social enterprise formed by the team behind the plans. “We have moved forward and made an application to put a

building up underneath the flyover as our first big intervention, so we’re about 10 weeks away from knowing whether that will happen. And we’re planning a programme of workshops and activities which are about occupying the space under it and above it, it’s very exciting.” Again, as well as funding, this particular crowdfunding project has achieved huge support from across the city and way beyond. The trial Flyover Fest event also won an England EPIC Award, which recognises voluntary arts initiatives. “It’s about creating something that’s a visitor attraction but is also something for local people to use.” adss Kate. “It’s a venue for culture and community activity, and a place for learning, nature and cultivating. I think people think it’s a complete no-brainer and it’s beautiful.” The success of the campaign so far, which is also “talked about internationally”, has prompted We Make Places to use its positive experience to help others “turn a great idea into a great project” and it recently launched an online MerseyHive outlet for other crowdfunding projects in the Liverpool City Region, such as festivals and attractions, to follow in its footsteps and gather support. Pop Boutique, Bold Street The vintage clothing trend is showing no signs of slowing down. From retro 50s dresses to 90s denim and reworked 80s sportswear, vintage styles across the decades are well loved, especially in Liverpool. With Pop Boutique’s first store opening 21 years ago, the brand is well-established when it comes to sourcing vintage, reworked and its own label pieces. Bold Street’s new arrivals in store feature festival favourites for the summer months. Style a complete vintage look with these frayed Levi shorts (£15) and a reworked vintage shirt, featuring a tropical leaf print (£18).

Most Wanted Clothing, Lime Street

MYNE Boutique is already a regular in Liverpool’s retail circuit, showcasing at a number of fairs and markets and taking space at the Rex Concept store earlier this year. And now, MYNE Boutique has a new home amongst the thriving independent retailers at Bluecoat. The boutique’s philosophy is to reconnect people to design and to re-engage consumers with offline shopping. One designer available in store is Emily Bell, who creates jewellery inspired by moss, coral and rock. Described as miniature art pieces, this unique necklace (£27) is something you won’t find on the high street.

A fashion brand set up in LA has opened its doors in Liverpool, offering the city’s mums and dads beautiful children’s clothing. Most Wanted Clothing has grown from strength to strength since it began in 2012, and is recognised for its on trend, high quality children’s pieces for ages 2-14 years. Stocked in stores such as Harvey Nichols and Selfridges, the brand has now opened a standalone store on Lime Street. Pop in store to find something special for your little boy or girl; we love this cute dress for £80. Featuring childlike crayon drawings, it would be the perfect addition to your little one’s summer wardrobe.

Daniel Footwear, Metquarter Gone are the days when trainers were practical and low key, the luxury trainer trend is making its way from the catwalk to the high street. New in Daniel Footwear’s Metquarter store is the skilled leather trainer for £109. With an updated silhouette for the new season, the trainer is already proving popular. Crafted from premium leather with a reptile texture finish and contrasting rubber sole, the unique shoe is a modern take on your usual trainers. The stylish trainer has metallic side detailing to add that extra touch of luxury, while the slip on style makes it great for daytime wear. Your Move 75

ICE CREAM Ice cream has always been an undoubted classic, the crème de la crème of beloved summer time indulgences. It seems only natural that a multitude of outlets in Liverpool dedicate time to providing ice cream of the highest possible standard, and the outcome is, minimally put, delicious. Here are three of the best ice cream providers around the city.

Ideally situated in the city centre, this is the perfect place to satisfy your cravings for genuine Italian style ice cream.

LEAN MEAN ICECREAM MACHINE Maddie’s Waffles, Allerton Road Maddie’s Waffles leaves you spoilt for choice with its massive selection of heavenly skyscraper sundaes, from its divine Chocolate Heaven to the sweet bliss of its refreshing Sorbet Supreme. Maddie’s definitely relishes in offering guilty and indulgent pleasures.

NOVA

Castle Street, L2 When invited to sample the cocktail menu at Nova 48 the new Castle Street bar that serves ‘sexy, naughty cocktails’ - the cynic in me wasn’t convinced. But I enjoy cocktails as much as the next person, and the prospect of a Friday evening filled with fruity fusions in fancy glasses was enough to put a smile on my face. After a guided tour of the dimly lit bar and a sneak peek through a Narnia style wardrobe door leading to a private function suite, we were ready to order. But where to start? The cocktail list is extensive and offers both classics and signature cocktails, priced between £7.95 and £11.95. Keen to make the most of the variety, my friend and I set out to sample the most unusual cocktails. First up was The Baby Rose, made from violet and rose crème with champagne and a touch of elderflower. Whilst I grimaced at the fragrance – think Parma Violets – my friend fell in love with this girly glass, which arrived in a cloud of dry ice. After a long day at the office, I was in need of some

refreshment and a Long Mint Tea fit the bill perfectly. Combining Monkey Shoulder whisky and Branca Menta stirred up with peppermint tea, sugar and cinnamon, this elixir is sure to revitalise tired city workers. As we selected our next tipples, I took the time to get a feel for the place. With beautiful leather upholstery and jazz music, the scene is more 1920s prohibition than the sleazy bar I’d envisioned. Continuing with strong flavours, my friend enjoyed the Liquorice Trouble: Russian vodka and crème de rose topped up with peppermint tea and liquorice syrup. Although an almighty mixture, this potent potion went down a treat. No cocktail menu is complete without a few amusing names thrown in the mix, so I thought I’d give the Porn Star Martini a try. Best likened to a Solero ice cream with vodka

injected, this cocktail is served with a shot of champagne to offset the sweetness and add a little fizz. If you can’t make up your mind, this drink would be a safe bet. For our third and final cocktails (they’re strong!), my friend and I decided to swap taste buds; she went for a French martini – Chambord raspberry liqueur with vodka and pineapple juice – and I branched out and ordered a Mai Tai – a blend of light and dark rum mixed with orange curacao, lime juice and a drizzle of almond syrup. As we left, I decided that Nova 48 is precisely what the commercial district needs: a place for cocktail loving colleagues to go for a spontaneous post-work night out. Whilst the bar makes a definite effort to create a certain ambience, it’s doesn’t value style over substance and the quality of cocktails is up there with some of Liverpool’s most established bars.
