EDITOR’S LETTER

Ever since news broke of much-loved Liverpool nightclub Kazimier’s closing there have been questions about what will become of Wolstenholme Square. With Elliot Group’s £40m development plans given the green light by Liverpool City Council’s planning committee those questions were answered. In this issue we look at the scheme in more detail and find out more about the developer’s vision for the square. Our Best Buys feature showcases the cosiest homes on the market from quaint interiors to thatched roofs. And, in this bumper Go Liverpool issue, we bring you not one but two fantastic interviews as we meet northern funnyman Dave Spikey and Unity Theatre’s creative director Matthew Linley.

FOLLOWING THE NEWS THAT PLANS FOR A M REDEVELOPMENT OF LIVERPOOL CITY CENTRE’S WOLSTENHOLME SQUARE HAVE BEEN APPROVED YOUR MOVE CAUGHT UP WITH THOSE INVOLVED IN THE SCHEME TO FIND OUT MORE

THE SCHEME The Wolstenholme Square project will include 427 one-bedroom studio apartments and 20 one-bedroom flats with a residents’ gym, 12,852 sq ft of ground-floor commercial space for use by businesses and 35,153 sq ft of floorspace at ground level. “We’ve also got a huge underground nightclub which is the new home of Cream,” says Elliot Lawless, director of developer, Elliot Group. “We’re talking about specification, fittings and furnishing with the Cream team now.” Lawless is also in talks with the management team behind Kazimier about a new venture but details remain a closelyguarded secret.

WORDS BY CHRISTINE TONER

The new

WOLSTEN

THE RESIDENTIAL ELEMENT The residential part of the development will be a full Private Rented Sector scheme. Entry level prices will be around £150pw for a studio, with all bills included. Onebedroom apartments are expected to cost around £170pw. “The reason we went with the studio and one-bedroom units is when we had an appraisal of the scheme done by Alan Bevan of City Residential he said due to the vibrancy of the square, the noise and the people you’re going to be bringing in, we won’t get the values on the two and three-bedrooms,” explains Elliot. “Cream is going to hold 42 events every year and we know when it holds an event there are thousands of people that attend. The target market for the apartments is people who work in the city. It’s not a student development. City Residential will be the management agent of the scheme.”

THE PUBLIC CONSULTATION “We put a consultation event on and I think in total we had around 150 people come through the door and the majority were very positive,” says Elliot. “They want to see Wolstenholme square get a new lease of life. Over 90% of the people were positive. All the comments, including the negative ones, were passed to the council.”

THE AREA’S CULTURE “We’re in talks with the Kazimier collective, we’ve done a deal with Cream – they’re the two principle operators on the space and they’re staying,” says Elliot. “If we talk about enhanced impact there is the new passage way through Seel Street and both sides will be animated by new cafes, bars, offices and shops etc. At the moment it’s a soulless corner, there’s very little quality architecturally and what we’re putting up has got merit. The commercial element will breathe new life into the square. We’ve been in good dialogue with Peter Schwiersmann, head of the Ropewalks Residents Association, and he will be sitting on the panel for the selection of the commercial spaces. He will dictate alongside ourselves who he feels fits right in area. He’d like to see new independent operators. We will be 100% sticking with that independent culture. “Also LiveNation is taking ground floor space, which will be Cream’s new office so that will help retain the type of offering that’s there now.”

HOT TOPIC

THE DESIGN

NHOLME

square

EL: “Before the war the buildings were a much higher scale on Wolstenholme Square, they were replaced by these lower buildings after they were bombed. This scheme is reinstating this part of the city with buildings of a proper height. It’s a big city, the stuff that’s there now is almost an apology.” Adam Hall of Falconer Chester Hall, the architect behind the project, says the scheme returns what we’d call ‘city scale’ buildings to the square. “Before the blitz buildings like the Valspar paint works were considerably bigger than their post-war replacements and that loss of scale diminished the neighbourhood.” he says. “Bringing it back adds drama, significance and presence – very Liverpool qualities, of course.”

THE PENELOPE INSTALLATION The Elliot Group has announced it will be working with artist Jorge Pardo to refurbish his Penelope installation in the square. “Penelope, 2002 is an important and loved public artwork,” says Sally Tallant, the director of the Liverpool Biennial. “It was produced for the 2002 Liverpool Biennial and it’s fitting that Elliot Group is planning to work with us to refurbish the work and bring it back to its former glory. We are looking forward to working with the team and creating an exciting space in the city.”

EL: “Liverpool works best where local entrepreneurs express the city’s tastes and personality through their work, whether that’s a bar, a shop, a design agency or even a building. The city craves the original, the quirky, the stylish – stuff that is quintessentially Liverpool. “That’s what we want at Wolstenholme Square and what, more widely, Ropewalks is now delivering with a degree of critical mass. We’re going to be focusing our lettings activities on local operators. There’ll be room for cafes, restaurants and offices, too, because we want a mix of activities, spread through the day and

evening. Putting a national chain restaurant in the middle of all that will just kill the vibe. “You can call it the march of the independents if you like, but to us it’s about adding the most value we can to the scheme, and building Clone Town is not going to do that. Original equals value in our book. “More widely, we always look to the Liverpool region for our subcontractors and professional advisors on our construction schemes. You rebuild a city from within, not by shipping in suppliers to the detriment of the local supply chain. If Liverpool offers the quality then we’ll always try and back it.”

What next? EL: “We plan to make a start on site in Q1 of next year and we’re looking to deliver phase one for September of the following year.” Your Move 45

NEWS LAST TWO PLOTS REMAINING AT LUXURY DEVELOPMENT Buyers looking to purchase a house at Forth Homes’ luxury West Derby development Woodhaven Close are being urged to move quickly as just two properties remain at the site. Woodhaven Close is an exclusive development of five executive, luxury homes. Just one fourbedroom and one five-bedroom property now remain. A spokesperson for Forth Homes says: “If you are interested in luxury living in a private gated community we recommend you contact Forth Homes to arrange a viewing.” The success of the West Derby site comes as works draw to a close on Forth Homes’ latest development of four-bedroom semi-detached family homes at Glenwyllin Road, Waterloo. One plot has already been reserved at the new-tomarket site with just three plots now available. Meanwhile construction is underway at the developer’s Melling Road site. Work commenced in June 2015 and phase one is due for completion by the end of this year with the remaining plots on schedule for early 2016. The spokesperson says: “The interest in this scheme has been enormous with four off-plan reservations already. We are offering fantastic

Woodhaven Close

incentives for early reservations so buyers are urged to call now to see what’s included. We’d also like to thank Abode estate agents for securing eight sales in September across our three sites –

the service it provides is second to none.” For more information visit www.forth-homes.com.

CREWE TO HOST FIRST EVER HELP TO BUY SHOW CHESHIRE Crewe Hall

The first Help to Buy Show Cheshire is set to take place in Crewe this October. The event, at Crewe Hall on 10 October, is aimed at anyone looking to buy their first home or take the next step up on the property ladder in Cheshire. Hosted by governmentappointed agent Help to Buy North West, Plus Dane, the event will provide an opportunity for hopeful buyers to find out about the affordable home ownership schemes across the region. Sandy Kelly, head of Help to Buy North West, says: “This event is a must visit for anyone considering their next steps on the property ladder. Whether they are first time buyers or second steppers, this great event pulls together expert

Keppie Massie takes Liverpool to London for investor event Liverpool estate agent Keppie Massie is set to represent the city at the UK’s biggest property show this autumn. A team of investment and development specialists from Keppie Massie will exhibit at the Property Investor and Homebuyer Show at ExCel London on 9 and 10 October. Keppie Massie is the only Liverpool agent to exhibit at the show. Debra Beach, branch manager at Keppie Massie Residential, says: “The London property market bubble is fit to burst and as a result investors are looking outside of the capital. Other northern cities, such as Manchester and Leeds have done extremely well by tapping into the investor market. Liverpool has been a little bit on the back foot but we’re determined we should be capitalising on this opportunity. We have a lot to offer as a city, not least in terms of excellent rental yields and capital growth. “Keppie Massie’s residential and commercial departments will be represented. We will be showcasing a portfolio of properties available at present, as well as some bigger projects which are ripe for conversion or redevelopment together with offering advice and information on investing in our great city.” The Property Investor Show takes place at ExCel, Royal Victoria Dock, London on 9 and 10 October and will feature seminars from the likes of the National Landlords Association and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

SUCCESS FOR SEPTEMBER SUTTON KERSH AUCTION

18 Rock Park 50 Your Move

Debra Beach

Sutton Kersh's September auction saw a record turnout, with more than 200 people attending, £4.5 million in sales and over 70% of the lots sold so far. Held at the Crowne Plaza, the auction included some properties selling for double the recommended guide price including a five-bed terrace on Sheil Road in Kensington, which sold for £106,000, with a guide price of £55,000 and a town house off Princess Drive, with a guide price £35,000, which sold for £60,000. The auction included a mix of residential and commercial property and there was strong bidding across both sectors. Cathy Holt, head of auctions at Sutton Kersh, says: "We've seen consistent high attendance at property auctions this year and have now sold 347 properties to date in 2015, generating proceeds for our clients of over £21.5 million. The residential sector has seen strong levels of interest and investment, with a number of the lots on offer during auction sold well above the recommended guide price or even sold before the auction has taken place." Stand out properties included a Georgian Grade-II detached property, 18 Rock Park, in Birkenhead, with views onto the Mersey Estuary. The derelict property sold for £35,000 above the guide price and has planning permission to be converted into six two-bedroom flats. Sutton Kersh is now inviting entries for its next auction which takes place on Thursday 29 October at Marriott Hotel, Queen Square. The closing date for entries is Friday 2 October. BEWARE OF NEW REGULATIONS WARNS AGENT City agent Andrew Louis is urging landlords to ensure they are up to date on new regulation as a number of new legislations come into effect. Parliament has recently passed a new legislation which changes the format of the section 21 notice, which means landlords needs to provide a copy of a valid gas safety certificate and Energy Performance Certificate to all new tenants. This applies to any new tenants who move into a property from 1 October this year. Meanwhile new Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England) Regulations 2015 will also come into force from 1 October. Louis Anastasiou, managing director of Andrew Louis, says: “It will be mandatory for all landlords and managing agents to ensure that all smoke and CO alarms are properly checked and if not already installed within their properties, then must be done so by the deadline. “A check must be carried out before each new tenancy and a smoke alarm is quite straightforward to ensure that it is in good working order. However a CO alarm is not so easy as people may overlook some of the correct procedures. “These are tough times for landlords with many new regulations to adhere too and Liverpool City Council’s Landlord Licensing Scheme still causing confusion among property owners. Any landlords seeking help or clarification can contact us or call in to one of our branches.” For more information visit www.andrewlouis.co.uk.

NEW SHOWROOM FOR PERFECT SHUTTERS A long standing Merseyside shutter specialist has opened a new dedicated shutter showroom on Allerton road. Perfect Shutters is a family-run business established in 2004. Due to an increase in demand it has launched a brand new showroom to showcase its products. Owner Paul Nixon says: “Our head office in the city’s fabric district has been a huge success for many years and we have an established and very loyal client base. Recently we’ve seen a rise in demand for our shutters so it made sense to expand our offering. “Our Allerton Road showroom is unique in both its design and the number of products on show. It gives the customer a real hands-on experience and the chance to discuss their own design options with friendly shutter experts.” Perfect Shutters

The furniture retailer, which opened in Liverpool in 2013 and also has stores in the Midlands and down south, launched its direct to consumers shop in Manchester last month and is set to bring its wholesale offering to the store later this year. As well as offering high quality oak furniture to consumers the retailer also supplies landlord packs to the buy-to-let market including property developers and student landlords through its wholesale business. Matthew Hunt, regional operations manager at Oak Furniture Solutions, says: “Generally with the landlord furniture business a lot of people go in for buying cheap flat pack furniture which has no durability whatsoever so they end up replacing it every 18 months. “What we offer are much more durable products that will last 10 or 15 years. It’s not something you’re having to constantly replace. You buy it once and it’s there to last. It works out a much better investment over the long term.” Oak Furniture Solutions will appear at this year’s Landlord and Property Show, Merseyside’s only specialist landlord show, on 24 October at BT Convention Centre.

Advice from chartered accountants and property tax experts

0151 228 8977

Julia Casimo

Taxman’s raid on buy-to-lets As well as removing the wear and tear allowance for furnished buy-to-lets, HMRC have recently announced another change which will, for many landlords have a much more serious impact. At the moment all of the interest (but not capital) on any loan taken out to buy, improve or maintain a buy-to-let property is fully deductible for tax purposes. Going forwards, rather than being allowed to deduct the full amount of loan interest, investors will get relief only at the basic rate of tax. The new regime starts to be phased in from April 2017, and will be fully in place by 2020 This change is only for Income Tax purposes, so doesn’t affect companies, (at the moment – watch this space). It will also only impact higher-rate tax payers.

To get an idea of the impact of the change on a typical buy-to-let investor, consider the example below: Rental income from a buy-to let portfolio is £45,000 per annum Interest on loans is £20,000 per annum Other expenses are £5,000 per annum Our investor has other income which means that he/she is a higher rate taxpayer.

Before the change our investor will be paying income tax of £8,000 on annual profits of £20,000 After the change our investor will be paying income tax of £12,000 on the same profits – an effective tax rate of 60%. There may be a number of strategies which investors can follow to reduce the impact of this unwelcome change. •

Repay mortgages and loans – possibly by selling assets or by refinancing loans onto assets where tax relief is available.

Sell properties, and assuming that you want to continue to invest in the property sector:

o

Invest in commercial property (where the new interest rules do not apply);

o

Invest via a company;

o

Invest jointly with others in debt-free residential property; or

o

Invest in a managed residential property fund

RENTAL REVOLUTION

Sell the whole or part of your interest in any buy-to-let property to a company which you control, on terms that the company takes on the whole of the borrowing.

None of these options is ideal and each has other cost or tax implications which would need careful consideration

TALENT

INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

You’re bringing your latest stand-up show ‘Punchlines’ to Liverpool. Tell us a bit about the show: There was something in a magazine which said the brain recognises patterns, so once you’ve been told something you don’t need telling again. It said that’s why we never laugh at jokes twice, because we know the punchline. I wondered if I could challenge that; if at the beginning of the show I gave the audience punchlines from classic jokes and then in the second half I came back and did those jokes with the punchlines, would they still laugh? It’s an experiment and my premise was that they would, and they do. In between, I talk about what we consider to be punchlines. I realised that people, no matter what they’re talking about, always end up laughing. They’re generating their own punchlines because somebody might be talking about something that happened to them and then someone else will see an opportunity for a laugh and it’s irresistible. It’s in our nature, especially in the North West I think. I also examine everything I consider to be a punchline. I’ve collected loads of great punchlines in newspaper headlines. Some are intentional, and with some I just think ‘they’ve not really thought about that, have they?’ For example, I’ve got a lovely picture of some old ladies at a craft fair and the headline says ‘Pensioners make lovely rugs’! If the North West particularly understands that humour, you must be looking forward to performing in the city? Oh yes, especially at the Philharmonic. I’d done all sorts of Liverpool venues and then I got asked to do Laughterhouse, and of course my big mate Neil Fitzmaurice comperes most of the gigs. I did the Christmas show at the Philharmonic about two years ago and it’s brilliant. What a great place!

I thought if I ever got the chance to come back to Liverpool I’d love to go there and they said yes straight away. I love performing around here; it’s like a home game and you can connect even better because people know where you’re coming from and where you’re talking about. There’s an element to your comedy of finding laughter in any situation, isn’t there? There is and people sneer at that a little bit. Comedy purists will say ‘there’s nothing big and clever about talking about everyday situations’ but I disagree. I talk about whatever makes me laugh and if it makes me laugh, I’m not unique so it’ll make you laugh. My job is to see things we all see, make them bigger and make them more surreal maybe. I think that’s a skill, I don’t think people should sneer because I don’t think it’s easy comedy. If it was easy we’d all be laughing at the same things wouldn’t we? You’ve been touring Punchlines for a while. Given that it’s quite an experiment; do you notice the audience picking up on new things each time? They do, it’s weird and so unpredictable. That’s why I love it! I write most days, and when I’m touring I keep tweaking and improving it. Lots of comedians save new material for the next tour but I’m like a kid with a new toy – I want to try it out on stage. I’ll write a routine and think ‘they’ll love that’ but sometimes it just does ok. Then a little bit you’ve thrown in for embellishment gets massive laughs. It’s the unpredictability of comedy, that’s what’s brilliant. You worked in a hospital before becoming a comedian. How did you make that transition? I owe a lot to my dad. He used to finish work at dinner time on Saturdays and take us to a gallery or museum and encourage us to read and write. He loved comedy too. Some of my best memories are of me and him listening to radio comedy or watching Morecambe and Wise, with both of us sliding off the couch with laughter. Having been encouraged to write and listen to comedy, I was really good at school essays and I used to get little notes saying ‘another good essay from David but why does everything have to have a comedy element?’. It was just the way my brain worked! When I worked at the hospital a doctor formed a society to put on sketch shows and pantomimes so I got involved. I didn’t want to be on stage but I’d write a bit. Then he moved on and I was left in charge so I started writing more ambitious shows. Somebody would drop out at the last minute and so I had to go on stage and do it. I loved being backstage and getting laughs from something I’d written, but then suddenly I was on stage seeing them laughing and it’s quite addictive.

Off I went doing open spots and talent shows but at the same time I was doing really well at the hospital. Over the same years of me getting better at comedy I was passing more exams, I got my fellowship from the Institute of Biomedical Science and ended up in charge of a haematology lab at the Royal Bolton Hospital. I was in great areas of expertise in leukaemia, lymphomas and abnormalities of haemoglobin; and then supporting Jack Dee down the local club at night! The two things happened together and then I’d met Peter [Kay] and we’d started writing and getting success. When they commissioned ‘Phoenix Nights’ I thought if I’m going for the comedy it’s got to be now. Did having such a serious job influence your style of comedy in terms of, again, finding laughter in anything? You’re absolutely right, it’s that thing about when you’re in hospital you’ve got to laugh or you’ll cry. With some stuff you’re dealing with you’ve got to have a ray of sunshine now and again, and I found I was the quickest to diffuse a situation that was quite tense. I think that’s why the medical profession breeds a lot of comedians, like Harry Hill and Jo Brand. 2015 must have been a big year for you so far, having reunited with the ‘Phoenix Nights’ cast on stage for Comic Relief. Now we’re talking about it I’m getting goosebumps. It was wonderful getting everyone back together because we were such big mates. Having that laugh for two weeks plus rehearsals and walking on stage to 15,000 people; this is a show that finished over 12 years ago and you think ‘how has it still got such a massive following?’ Peter produced a fantastic show and it’s a privilege to be involved in something like that. Have any new projects been borne out of that experience? I started writing with Janice Connolly who plays Holy Mary. She’s a great stand-up and does a brilliant character called Barbara Nice. She was writing a live studio sitcom for the BBC and asked me to write it with her. We performed it live and it went down really well so we’re waiting to hear on that. It’s a unique type of show because of the way Janice is and how her character is. We’d have a story idea and then talk to people on the streets and we’d incorporate what they’d suggested into the scripts. I’m writing a comedy drama for the BBC as well. I got a script commissioned about a North West family who are down on their luck and they buy a little house in Spain that’s got a bit of a vineyard attached to it. It’s all about them going out and saying ‘let’s just go and have a go’, and I’m writing it with Jim Cartwright who wrote ‘Little Voice’ and a few other major things. He’s such a great talent.

& AUTUMN MENUS Summer may be over but there’s plenty of reasons to love autumn as some of the city’s best loved restaurants launch their new season menus. We take a look at three of the best.

THE BRINK Parr Street

BLIND TIGER

The Brink’s autumn menu features dishes inspired by world foods and flavours combined with traditional home comforts. Made using local and seasonal ingredients, autumnal delights include Beef and Chorizo Stew, Salmon and Asian Greens in a Malaysian Laska Broth, as well as Butternut Squash and Wild Mushroom Gnocchi to name a few.

THORNTON HALL HOTEL & SPA Neston Road, Thornton Hough Chef Matt Worswick, star of BBC 2’s Great British Menu, will launch a new tasting menu at Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa this autumn. Priced at £80 per person, or £125 per person with an accompanying wine flight, the menu includes Game Old Bird - partridge, blackberries, bread sauce; Grandma’s Garden – butter poached lobster, baby turnips, peas, mint; Shall I Be Mother – lamb loin, hotpot, stockpot vegetables and Grandma’s Orchard - apple crumble, cider brandy ice cream, spiced bread.

THE VINCENT CAFÉ & COCKTAIL BAR Exchange Flags The Vincent Café & Cocktail Bar has caused quite a stir since its launch earlier this year and is fast becoming a firm favourite with the foodie set. To mark the start of the new season it is sprucing up its menu with new dishes including new starter pulled pork hash brown with poached hens egg and Parma ham.

71 Seel Street, L1

If you follow any of Blind Tiger’s social media accounts, you’ll understand how excited I was to visit this new bar and restaurant on Seel Street. Luckily, I wasn’t disappointed. Described as an Asian style speakeasy and cocktail destination, its style lends itself perfectly to Instagram worthy photos of stylish cocktails and vibrant food dishes. On arrival, my guest and I first noted the amazing interior of the building; the basement is beautifully decorated with artwork on exposed brickwork, bird cages wrapped around lights and intimate red booths perfect for large groups to enjoy some dim sum and cocktails. To begin the evening we tried the traditional Japanese wine Sake – although not our typical drink selection, it was an authentic way to start our meal and Blind Tiger offers a wide selection if you’re feeling adventurous. Next we ordered a round of cocktails, which is a difficult task as the drinks menu is bigger than the food menu. I went for the Japanese Treacle, a strong whisky based drink served with a slice of absinthe jelly and a mint garnish (£9.50). My guest decided on the

REVIEW BY HANNA FOWLER

Daniel San with vodka, honey, cherry juice, fresh orange juice and vanilla ice cream (£7.50) – a decadent creation which is effectively a boozy milkshake! The food menu offers different dim sum served in traditional bamboo baskets and other small plates ranging from £2 to £7. Being small plates, we were recommended by our waiter to order a selection of dishes to share – which is great if you fancy trying new flavours. As snacks to go alongside our small plates we ordered the prawn crackers with chilli, orange and lime (£2) and mustard and black sesame popcorn (£2), both welcome additions which went down a treat while we waited for our other dishes. The salt & pepper chicken spring rolls (£4) were crispy with just the right amount of spice, while the salt & pepper sweet potato fries (£3.50) were so good we ordered twice. The traditional dim sum of prawn and chicken Sui Mai (£4) - a popular steamed dumpling dish - tasted so authentic I forgot where I was, and the roast pork belly Gua Bao bun (£4) was so

tender it melted in the mouth. For our next round of cocktails we decided on a classic Pina Colada (£6), served in a coconut with dry ice for a dramatic effect and a Rose Julep (£10), a rum based drink beautifully presented in what looks like a mini cauldron. In between cocktails, we received even more food, this time the vegetable Pad Thai (£5.50) and crispy confit duck leg, served with pancakes (£7). Both were delicious with the right balance of flavours and textures which Blind Tiger seems to get so right. Before we left, we were easily persuaded to try yet another selection of cocktails from the menu, the Hung Gar Hendricks (£7.50) which is the best looking gin cocktail I’ve seen and Asian Salvation (£7), another gin based drink with lychee liqueur and crème de mure. We left Bling Tiger very happy and, even though I’m sure the cocktails had some influence in this, the rest was down to the authentic, tasty food and ambient space, which could easily be my new favourite cocktail spot in Liverpool.

GO LIVERPOOL DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW YOU WANTED TO WORK IN THE ARTS? If you look at the back of my History A level exercise books I was planning and budgeting theatre seasons instead of learning about the French Revolution! I clearly was a strange kid. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TO GETTING WHERE YOU ARE TODAY Seeing the same actor play the leads in Charleys’ Aunt and Toad of Toad Hall at the old Leeds Playhouse kicked it off for me. I was first introduced to alternative theatre by a breath-taking production of Tony Harrison’s V by Volcano. I trained at Dartington College of Arts (at the same time that biennial director Sally Tallant was a tutor) before running venues in Edinburgh, Bath, Reading and Leicester. HOW MUCH PERFORMING DO YOU GET TO DO NOWADAYS? I gave the world (well Horsforth, Leeds) my Ugly Sister and then retired from performing on a high. I’m afraid to say I’m not much of a performer – can’t sing, can’t dance and have a very strange face – so I knew from early days my theatre career would lie elsewhere. YOUR NEW ROLE WILL SEE YOU LEAVING EASTERN ANGLES THE THEATRE COMPANY YOU’VE BEEN GENERAL MANAGER OF SINCE WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR TIME THERE? There are too many to choose – a spine tingling production of Joel Horwood’s I Heart Peterborough, staging the end of the world (Ragnarok) in a cold war air hanger, a musical about town planning – new town planning to be precise (Parkway Dreams – on tour again this autumn) and of course Chicken which I’m delighted to say Eastern Angles and Unity have just taken to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. WHAT APPEALS TO YOU ABOUT THE UNITY? So much – but a lot of it is captured on the front of our most recent brochure. Unity really does feel fresh, radical and modern and that’s very appealing. And being those things in a city like Liverpool is something very special. Finally, I say this a lot, but I think it’s very true, that Unity is a place to dream for our audiences and artists. HOW DOES THE THEATRE COMPETE WITH THE OTHER LARGER THEATRES IN THE CITY? DO YOU INTENTIONALLY AIM FOR A DIFFERENT AUDIENCE? For me it’s not about competition, it’s about collaborating, and celebrating the fact that Liverpool has such a rich and diverse theatre offer. Outside of London you would be hard pressed to find another city with such a strong theatre offer – there literally is always something on! THE UNITY IS PASSIONATE ABOUT HOME GROWN TALENT HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO GIVE OPPORTUNITIES TO PERFORMERS FROM THE CITY? New talent has and is one of the key strands of Unity’s programme, cut us open and you’ll see it writ large across our hearts. Supporting the next generation of artists, and especially those from Liverpool is a key part of what we are about and what we do – through our open season, through our Making Art programme and through making available a whole host of other opportunities and possibilities. How important is it? It’s vital both now and for the future. FINALLY WHAT DOES THE THEATRE HAVE IN STORE FOR THE REST OF THIS YEAR? We’ve got some particularly relevant and exciting shows coming up. Lampedusa explores immigration both in the UK and also in the Mediterranean, the show has been in London and received rave reviews so it’ll be a must see. Our Christmas show is always spectacular (this year it is The Princess and The Pea), we work with children’s theatre specialists Action Transport Theatre (from Ellesmere Port) who are also bringing their new show Happily Ever After which is a great watch for families! There’s so much great theatre coming to Liverpool this autumn.
