NEWS LANDMARK LIBRARY EXCEEDS GUIDE PRICE AT AUCTION One of John Lennon’s childhood haunts went under the hammer at the latest Sutton Kersh auction, exceeding its £150,000 guide price. The former Woolton Library - a vacant sandstone building in the Woolton Village conservation area with potential for residential redevelopment – sold for £205,500 at the October sale. The property was one of several stand-out lots which helped the auctioneer to generate a sales total of more than £5 million. Meanwhile a freehold Grade II-listed building on Vernon Street in Liverpool, which has planning permission to be turned into six self-contained flats, attracted a sale of £406,500 – 26% over its £300,000 guide price. Ahead of the event, which attracted several hundred attendees, a record £1.8m is said to have been made in pre-auction sales as 10 lots were sold beforehand. Cathy Holt, head of auctions at Sutton Kersh, says: “Each auction this year has seen high levels of sales which really points to a growing confidence both in the commercial and residential property market in Liverpool. We are still taking enquiries for lots which didn’t sell during the auction and the figure of £5m in property sales looks set to rise in the next few days.” Sutton Kersh is now inviting entries for its next auction, which takes place on 10 December. Available through the governmentbacked Help to Buy scheme, which allows eligible first-time buyers and those looking to move up the property ladder to secure a home

with a 5% deposit, the latest threebedroom properties being showcased include features such as an open-plan kitchen and dining room with skylights and French doors leading to a rear garden. The homes also come with a landscaped front garden. The marketing suite and show village for the scheme is based on Lewisham Road off Broad Lane. The company says it has received concerns from landlords over the steps needed to comply with the new citywide legislation, which was implemented by Liverpool City Council in April, and is warning the lettings industry to be aware. Danielle Hughes, a solicitor from the firm’s dispute resolution team, was on hand to offer pro bono advice at the recent Merseyside Landlord and Property Show, and says: “The council is already cracking down on landlords who haven’t applied for their licence, so we’d urge landlords who haven’t yet got a licence in place to do so immediately to hopefully avoid sanctions.” The licensing scheme requires all landlords with Liverpool rental properties to pay £400 for a five-year licence for their first property and £350 for each additional property, although for those in an approved landlord scheme the cost is £200 property. Across the city, up to 50,000 properties owned by an estimated 5,000 landlords are said to be covered by the licensing scheme, which aims to ensure everyone letting properties in the city is Danielle Hughes ‘fit and proper’.

AGENT CALLS FOR DIFFERENCE TO BE HIGHLIGHTED IN ‘ROGUE’ LANDLORD MEASURES A city letting agent has questioned whether the government’s Housing and Planning Bill may provide the same access to landlord details as Liverpool’s citywide licensing scheme. Louis Anastasiou, managing director of Andrew Louis, says the new legislation, which was debated in Parliament for the second time earlier this month, could provide the city council with the same details in its bid to help spot ‘rogue’ landlords. He says: “The council will have more powers to gain information from council tax registration forms and deposit schemes. It’s the same information coming from the landlord licensing scheme and we need to know what’s different.” The licensing scheme was introduced in April this year, bringing a legal obligation for all landlords to apply for a five-year licence for each of their rental properties in the city. Landlords must pay £400 to licence their first property, with £350 for each additional property and a discounted rate is available at £200 to those who have also voluntarily signed up to accreditation schemes. Commenting on the matter, a spokesperson for Liverpool City Council says: “Through our voluntary accreditation scheme and the recently introduced landlord licensing scheme we’re implementing measures to root out rogue landlords. “We welcome any measures to help that.”

HAVE EITHER OF YOU BEEN TO THE EVERYMAN BEFORE? Mark Kermode: Yes, I’ve been there loads of times – I briefly lived in Liverpool and it’s where my wife and I got married. I’ve done shows at the Everyman before and I am very much looking forward to it. Simon Mayo: I’m very much looking forward to it because I haven’t been there. WHAT WILL THE SHOW INVOLVE? MK: We’re asking people to come along with their ailments and we are going to attempt to cure them through the magic of movies. In advance of the show we’re tweeting people and asking them to send us some suggestions of stuff that they need to be cured. Then Doctor Simon will do a brilliant job of prescribing movies that will make them feel better whilst I shall be droning on about how movies themselves can be made better by medical attention. SM: Sounds like a really entertaining evening. MK: It does, Simon. YOUR BOOK REFERS TO THE ‘ILLS OF THE FILM WORLD’ HOW DO MOVIES NEED IMPROVING? MK: Well, the way the book works is that there is a kind of conceit in it in that Simon and I have both actually got doctorates – I’ve got a proper doctorate, he’s got a made-up doctorate that was given to him by the University of Do-it-yourself. SM: Excuse me, the University of Warwick. MK: And they just gave it to you because you were still around. SM: It’s proper, I’m a D-Lit, ok? I have a robe, I have a mortar board and I have a photograph. MK: Yes, that’s great. SM: That’s what counts. More fool you for working for one. MK: Basically we are both theoretically doctors, although neither of us are medical doctors, and the way we divided the book up was essentially that Simon would look at how movies could affect the viewers and how movies could make you feel better or how movies could address particular ailments; you know, phobias, decisions about parenting, some general life tips. I would look at how it was that movies themselves needed medical attention. One of the things I did in the book was look at how some movies are too long and in need of some amputation of their running length, and how other movies have suffered from being made by people who are being praised too highly. I write a long section on the dangers of praising film

makers, which is very, very dangerous because if you tell a film maker they’re a genius, they almost inevitably go off and do their worst work. Then there are sections about plastic surgery - films which have been changed to look like different films - and a section about organ transplants, which is about the way in which soundtracks are placed on and taken off movies. SM: Mark’s piece is proper journalism and mine is just whimsy – that’s basically it! MK: Or the way I like to look at it; anything in the book that’s funny and charming is Simon and anything in the book that’s whingy and sounds like some snot-nosed writer is me. WHAT IS THE BEST FILM YOU’VE REVIEWED ON THE SHOW? MK: Well ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ for me, which I still think is one of the greatest movies. Actually now I say that, did we do ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’? ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ was 2001, wasn’t it? We must have done; it must have been very early on – I can’t quite remember. I know I go on about it but ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ is one of the greatest films of recent years. What about you? SM: Well, you do the reviews and I just chip-in. MK: Okay, what is the film that you and I have agreed on most? That we think is great of recent years? SM: ‘Pride’. ‘Pride’ was good. MK: We loved ‘Pride’. We thought ‘Pride’ was good didn’t we? We thought ‘Pride’ was great. This is like some old couple’s conversation: ‘We loved that didn’t we? Yeah we loved that one, yeah.’ AND THE WORST FILM? MK: Where do you begin? SM: ‘Entourage’. We’ll say ‘Entourage’ because Mark is the reviewer therefore he sees all the films. I only see a film if there is a guest attached to it because I do the interview. So, normally when there is a really rubbish film, I don’t get to see it because it’s not worth it. But in the case of ‘Entourage’ I saw it first because I was going to interview Jeremy Piven and I knew as soon as it came out that Mark was going to hate it. I would say that in all the time we have been doing this, in terms of a movie that we’ve both seen, it’s ‘Entourage’. We disagreed over ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ – the first one – because I liked it, but we agreed over the second one. So I would think ‘Entourage’ merits the number one. MK: That was the one we both consistently despised. And of course, as you said, the argument was that you hated it first. SM: Yeah, I’m proud of that. MK: You’re very proud of disliking it before me.

MK: The oddest answer to this question, and everyone thinks I’m lying but I’m not, is that I try really hard to not know anything about movies before I see them. Obviously, I do know that Star Wars is going to open in the next couple of months and it’s impossible not to know something about it. But my general rule is, because I’m a national press critic which means that I see films on Monday and Tuesday and write reviews on Wednesday, I broadcast reviews on Friday which is the day that they open; so as far as it is possible I really try not to pre-judge anything by reading stuff about it in advance. That means, for example, not reading articles about movies before you’ve seen them, attempting to stay away from the endless barrage of trailers that give them away in various small parts before you actually see the film. So, from my point of view, the thing I’m really looking forward to is the thing I know nothing about. There’s a couple of weeks between now and the Everyman show, and I have genuinely tried to stay away from knowing anything about what I’m going to see between now and then. SM: Yes, I went to see ‘Crimson Peake’ which I loved, but the great thing was that I didn’t know anything about it. I was quite happy not to know anything about it because you have no expectations.

ROCOCO Tucked away above a shop on busy Lord Street, you would be forgiven for walking straight past Rococo. But this really is one coffee shop worth seeking out – be it for a quick pit stop and a hot drink before carrying on with your sight seeing or for a well-earned sit down after a hard day’s shopping. An independent oasis facing the Liverpool ONE development, Rococo is a real hidden gem with its mismatched chairs and reclaimed wood tables creating a unique environment in which to sit and watch the world go by. Venture upstairs through the side entrance and you will easily find a seat in one of the cosy armchairs or sofas to relax in front of a roaring fire – a great way to recharge your batteries before heading out to Liverpool’s Christmas market which launches just outside on Lord Street on 20 November.

A stroll along Formby Beach in the winter is a refreshing way to spend an hour or two. It truly can be a unique experience as winter storms and high tides can push the coast back by 10m overnight, meaning you could be the first to discover a completely new shoreline. The walk, of around two to three miles, will take you in a circular fashion through charming woodlands and along a picturesque coastline. Starting at Freshfields train station, turn right off the platform and head down Victoria Road towards the squirrel reserve. The National Trusts’s celebrated red squirrel reserve offers a fantastic opportunity to get up close and personal with the animals which are quite used to humans, so they will let you get closer than most wildlife. Squirrels do not hibernate in the winter either, meaning you can still spot them searching for food on the woodland floor. Continue along the main path towards the beach car park and out onto the sand dunes (Formby beach has 500 acres of sand dunes) and down to the beach for some breathtaking views across the Irish Sea – you can even see Blackpool Tower on a clear day. During the winter months, large flocks of several species of waders and gulls can also be spotted feeding up and down the coast. Follow the beach via Mad Wharf to Formby Point before crossing back over the sand dunes and heading along a grassland path to the man-made lake and Wicks Woods, before ending up on Kirklake Road, which will lead you to Formby train station.

On a clear winter’s day there is surely no better vantage point to enjoy Liverpool’s famous waterfront than on-board a Mersey ferry. Sir Peter’s ‘Everybody Razzle Dazzle’ design will continue to cover the Mersey ferry, Snowdrop, with a distinctive pattern for the next two years. There is yet another reason to take a trip across the Mersey this winter as 2015 would have seen John Lennon celebrate his 75th birthday and as the Beatles performed on the Mersey ferry several times in their early years, so why not follow in their footsteps this winter.

After a bracing journey on the Mersey ferry, you might be seeking some shelter and there are few better places in Liverpool to do so than at the Tate. You have even more reason to do so this winter as Tate Liverpool presents an exhibition of the work of Henri Matisse, featuring one of his most iconic works, The Snail. Due to the extremely delicate condition of the work, this is the only time The Snail will be on display outside London. At three square metres, this is one of Matisse’s biggest and most substantial paper cut-out works – a medium that he began to work in exclusively during his later years due to ill health. Don’t forget to visit the café on your way out which has been given an incredible makeover by Sir Peter Blake featuring the same design as the Dazzle Ship on the River Mersey.

MARAY Bold Street, L1 4HF At the risk of sounding corny, the saying ‘good things come in small packages’ springs to mind during a visit to Maray. Stepping inside from bustling Bold Street the interior may be compact but it’s cool and cosy, with dim lighting providing the right setting for an autumnal take on its small plates and cocktails. When my dining partner and I called in, the eatery was busy and atmospheric in that typical Bold Street way. Nevertheless, we were quickly ushered to a table for two by a friendly member of staff who advised us on the menu. Choose three small plates each, or five and a couple of sides between the two of us if planning on sharing, she recommended. I sipped the cocktail special – the ‘Hotline Bling’ (£7) – as we narrowed down the widely tempting raw, meat, vegetable and fishbased small plates selection. The sweet and fruity concoction of rhubarb infused gin, mint, lime, Yuzu liquer, apple and lime bitters made me optimistic about the feast ahead. We decided to share the beetroot and gin cured trout with pickled cucumber, crème fraiche and crostini (£6.50); roast roots with cardamom yogurt, toasted almonds and green chilli sauce (£5.50); deep fried chillies and whitebait (£5.50); and from the ‘on the side’ and ‘snack’ sections, the sweet potato wedges with tahini and balsamic

reduction (£3.80) and hummus and Baba Ganoush with flatbread (£3.50). I also picked confit duck rillete with raz el hanout chutney (£6.50) and my dinner date chose the rare breed Edge & Sons ribeye with Baghdad butter and burnt onion puree (£9.50). With dishes arriving as and when they were ready, along with a pot of deep fried olives – a tasty, crunchy twist on the traditional appetiser – we scrambled to make space for the array of food. Pomegranate seeds added bite and an extra seasonal touch to the refreshing yet smoky Baba Ganoush, which my partner and I later declared a highlight of the meal. Meanwhile the trout was in keeping with autumn, as the beetroot brought a burst of colour to the beautiful sushi-like yet unusual dish. The confit duck rillete arrived tender and generously packed into a jar, confirming that whilst specialising in ‘small plates’, Maray doesn’t scrimp on portions. The cold meat was warmed by the chutney, which tasted festively rich in spices and fruitiness. As further plates took over a nearby shelf it became clear that five dishes and two sides was, in fact, a hefty meal for two but we were keen to try everything. The sweet potato wedges were huge and deliciously cooked and it was pleasing to see the vegetable remaining fresh and nutritious – too

often are sweet potatoes served as overly crispy fries covered in salt, pretty much cancelling out the goodness. The whitebait – a daunting looking bowl of tiny fish packed a moreish flavour and texture and was easy and enjoyable to eat. For my dinner date, the ribeye was another hit as it was cooked to perfection, and I found the sweetness of my delicious cocktail complemented the seasonal spices and ingredients throughout the meal. Satisfyingly full, we agreed to look at the dessert menu – purely for research purposes, of course – and I found the idea of Aperol Spritz jelly with crunchy bits and fruit (£6) irresistible. Maray had turned my favourite cocktail drink into a dish! With staff in agreement that it was a highlight of the menu, backing me in my decision, the dessert didn’t disappoint and was a stand-out point of the evening for me. Meanwhile my dinner date was pleased he had somehow found room for a delicious panna cotta in a last minute decision. The desserts brought a sweet end to a night of dishes which may have been labelled ‘small’ but were mighty in flavour and substance. Maray stands out with its variety and wellcooked fresh ingredients and we’d be happy to return again and again. Although we’d maybe order less next time! Your Move 69
