EDITOR’S LETTER From big screen creations and high-end dramas to commercials, Liverpool continues to be a hotspot for film crews. But how can residents get a piece of the action? We catch up with the Liverpool Film Office to get the lowdown on how you could put your home forward as a location, and the benefits and experiences it can bring. And as the temperature outside continues to drop, we explore some of Merseyside’s warm and cosy interiors as lounges become the focal point in Best Buys. Plus we showcase a selection of fantastic fireplaces to heat up your home in style. If that’s not enough, our Go Liverpool guide is sure to keep you busy throughout the countdown to Christmas as it highlights the best December events.

LOCATION
LOCATION ALREADY THE MOST FILMED UK CITY OUTSIDE OF LONDON DEMAND TO USE LIVERPOOL AS A LOCATION IS SHOWING NO SIGN OF SLOWING DOWN AS SITES RANGING FROM PROMINENT CITY LANDMARKS TO RESIDENTIAL STREETS CONTINUE TO BE SOUGHT BY CREWS FOR A WHOLE HOST OF SCREEN PROJECTS WE EXPLORE THE INS AND OUTS OF PUTTING YOUR HOME IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA In recent months alone, Liverpool’s profile as a top location for TV and film has been given a major boost. Not only has the city been used as the only non-studio set for writer J.K. Rowling’s latest Harry Potterrelated screen creation, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’; but hit BBC drama, ‘Peaky Blinders’ is confirmed to return to Liverpool for a third series. Such projects are just the latest in a stream of big screen productions and high-end dramas, so it’s no wonder Liverpool Film Office’s (LFO) locations co-ordinator, Kevin Bell, hails 2015 as “one of, if not the most successful year ever”. With this in mind, he insists there’s plenty of opportunity for residents of the city to take a piece of the action. “What we have [being filmed] every single day is commercials, light entertainment, documentaries and so on,” says Kevin. So how can you put your home on screen? And what are the benefits and implications? 36 Your Move
SCREEN-WORTHY HOMES Film crews have been spotted in historic areas including the city’s character-filled Georgian quarter on many occasions, but whilst such architecture may be a prominent pull for filming projects, providing confidence in Liverpool as a location, it’s by no means all that production companies are looking for. Peruse websites of London-based agencies showcasing potential film locations across the UK, such as Shootfactory which has Liverpool houses among its range, and you’ll find striking architectural offerings and opulent homes being put forward for the likes of music videos. Keeping it local though, the LFO is a key avenue for city homeowners to put any property forward as it not only acts as a port of call for production companies looking to make use of the area, but also maintains a database for which residents can sign up to for free. “You find people who have registered have done it when they’ve literally just decorated or renovated, and we have the most amazing properties on there,” explains Kevin, adding: “People don’t tend to think of putting their house forward when they haven’t decorated for a year or two or they’ve got a more traditional terraced house, but what some would class as a normal terraced property is just as sought-after as anything else so what productions have to do is go out and search for them because they don’t tend to be on location databases.” According to Kevin, a large and varied selection of potential properties ready to offer to productions, without them having to seek locations out themselves, will further strengthen the city’s chances of attracting more projects which can only have a positive impact on the local economy. “Having that volume and diversity in residential properties will help the city attract production,” he says. “Even if those properties might not get filmed in themselves, they will certainly help bring more productions to Liverpool and help increase employment and investment for the city.”

SCALE AND IMPACT
S? WHAT’S IN IT FOR HOMEOWNER
© iStock/bjones27

From experience the LFO, which continues to remain involved in a residential location project on an advisory level once homeowners have been set up with productions, suggests it’s not uncommon for some city properties to be used time and time again. As well as the expected element of excitement that comes from meeting actors and watching the filming action unfold, location managers are said to be keen to maintain a happy relationship with owners, in the hope of returning in the future if necessary. With this in mind, looking after residents’ interests as their homes and lives are temporarily disrupted, and also providing “honest fees” in return are important factors. “There’s a financial benefit - particularly with dramas, feature films and commercials - as they will come with a location fee which can range depending not only on the scale of the project but also the scale of impact,” highlights Kevin. “There may be costs that a person needs to think about if they are going to allow a production to come into their property, and then that needs to be factored in and discussed with any fee, but productions tend to be quite honest. They’ll be very upfront so the owner can make an educated decision before they decide to move forward with filming.”
How much filming takes place at a single location will inevitably vary from project to project, as will the impact on the property itself. With discussions of the finer details taking place between production managers and homeowners prior to filming, residents can expect crews to be on site for as little as half a day with minimum dressing of the set, to a number of days with redecoration required. “There are productions wanting a generic living room for a non-descript character that only has one appearance in the drama that they want to film for half a day, so they’ll do the minimum amount of dress and find a property that’s probably close to other locations they’re going to film in,” Kevin explains. “Then you’ve got the other end of the scale, where we’ve had properties that have been filmed in for a week and every single room is decorated to the point where the production asks the person to move out for that period. “It was a period production so they said ‘it’s your home and we’re guests, but we’d happily cover the cost if you wished to move out and just check how we’re getting on each day – you’d probably find that more comfortable’. “That was quite a big feature film so you had about 70-80 people running around the property all the time.” As agreed prior to filming, it’s standard for productions to compensate owners for any damage they may cause to properties and then to ensure they return homes to an “agreeable condition,” particularly where an extensive dress has taken place. “The re-instatement is then essentially an opportunity to redecorate the house rather than painting the room back to the colour it was,” says Kevin. “Although if suddenly the demand is that they want this amazing wallpaper at £80 per roll and they never had it before, the production will say they can’t do that unless it was something agreed up front as part of the fee. You’ve got professional painters coming in and painting your house for you.”
STREET SCENES Residents don’t always need to invite the cameras into their homes – sometimes being in the right street can put a property under the spotlight. In such cases, liaison with households directly affected is standard as, again, production teams aim to keep residents on side. Kevin suggests crews may look after online shopping deliveries to ensuring residents’ cars are securely parked elsewhere if such vehicles need to be kept out of shot, although it’s unlikely a general fee would be paid to a street’s residents for the exterior of their home being filmed. In the past, productions have instead made donations to local charities or projects. “Where that then changes is that they might say they want to dress your windows, and there would tend to be a small fee involved where there’s more specific detail,” adds Kevin.

NEWS SUTTON KERSH BRAND TO REMAIN FOLLOWING ACQUISITION SAYS DIRECTOR James Kersh
Sutton Kersh’s brand and team will remain intact following Countrywide plc’s acquisition of the family business, according to auction director James Kersh. Along with fellow Merseyside agent Clive Watkin, the long-running property firm which was originally set up in 1976 has now joined the nationwide Countrywide Group as it targets the region for expansion. James, whose father Stewart Kersh originally set up Sutton Kersh on Stanley Street in Liverpool city centre, was appointed as managing director of the company in January this year. The deal marks the latest development for Sutton Kersh which, over the years, has expanded its services to provide residential sales, lettings, property management, commercial property, auctions, mortgages, surveys, valuations and energy performance assessments across six offices. Welcoming the move, James Kersh, who now takes the title of auction director, says: “We see this as a progressive marriage between two companies who share similar values. “Countrywide is the largest and most successful property group in the UK and it widens the services we will offer to clients we’ve built up over 40 years of business. It also widens the opportunities to staff, with the support Countrywide can offer them in gaining further qualifications in the industry.” Commenting further on how the agency, which was recently awarded the Best Letting Agency accolade at this year’s prestigious Your Move Property Awards, will look to clients moving forward, James adds: “The brand remains and, most importantly, the people in the building who serve our clients remain.” Countrywide, which has also acquired established Welsh property business John Francis as part of its expansion, says Clive Watkin and Sutton Kersh will complement its Entwistle Green brand in Liverpool, which it regards as one of the leading cities outside of London for growth, as well as its Land and New Homes operation in the area.
GO DIRECT TARGETS NEW LIVERPOOL ‘GROWTH AREAS’ Go Direct Lettings has launched two new Liverpool franchise opportunities following the brand’s success in other parts of Merseyside.
Current Go Direct representatives
Having operated branches in Woolton and Wallasey for two years, the agency is now targeting North Liverpool and East Liverpool for its next openings. Don Holmes, director of Go Direct Lettings which has a Wirral-based head office, says: “They are both very strong areas for growth and, from our perspective, would link us up.” A North Liverpool branch would aim to cover from Pier Head in the city’s L2 area to as far as Little Crosby, while an East Liverpool office would deal with properties from Old Swan and West Derby to Prescot and Whiston. Launching a search for franchisees to come forward and lead the new ventures, Don says while experience “would be helpful but not necessary,” the firm’s training and support would fully equip newcomers to manage a branch. Meanwhile, funding and an “extensive franchise pack” are available to help, with Go Direct’s team of Merseyside franchisees operating a supportive network. Don adds: “We’d like to see the new branches open by spring/ summer 2016.” For more information email Go Direct Lettings’ Wirral head office at info@godirectfranchise.com. Your Move 41

NEWS
Quick demand for Woolton Rise development Half of the homes at South Liverpool’s new Woolton Rise development have now been taken, just seven weeks after the showhome was unveiled.
The Woolton Rise showhome
Developer Hollybank Homes says it is continuing to attract further interest, enquiries and viewings for the scheme, which features 12 new-build homes incorporating five different designs. So far six of the four and five-bedroom plots remain available at the Childwall Lane site, which is also offering potential buyers assistance through the government-backed Help to Buy scheme. Commenting on the development’s rapid success so far, Gary Buchanan, director of Hollybank Homes, says: “The homes are selling very quickly, the showhome has been open for seven weeks and we are already at our half way point with sales. “There are only six plots left and we have been amazed by the amount of interest the development has had.” For further information, contact Hollybank Homes on 0151 428 9934.
LOVELL’S CHURCH FIELDS ATTRACTS ‘RISING RE-SALE INTEREST’ Affinity at Church Fields
Homes at Lovell’s Affinity at Church Fields development are said to be attracting strong re-sale values, according to an agent involved in the scheme. Senior residential valuer Mark Russell from Venmores, which is assisting the housebuilder with marketing properties at the Garston site, suggests that alongside those considering new properties on offer demand for re-sale homes at the development has also been on the rise. He says: “We’re seeing great re-sale values at Church Fields. This is a really positive sign for purchasers looking to buy a brand new Lovell home on the current phase as they can be confident their property will be a solid investment if they come to sell in years to come. “Lovell recently released a new phase, offering even more choice of three and four-bedroom properties. Affinity at Church Fields has matured and is a lovely family development. It’s has strong access links to the city and surrounding areas, with the added benefit of retail centres close by including the New Mersey Retail Park.” For more information about Affinity at Church Fields, which has homes available through the government-backed Help to Buy scheme, call 0151 515 4159.

NEWS SUCCESSFUL YEAR SHOWS CONFIDENCE IN CITY MARKET, SAYS AUCTIONEER Sales success throughout 2015 is the sign of a “confident market” in the Liverpool City Region, according to Sutton Kersh Auctions. The auctioneer is currently preparing for its final sale of the year, which will take place at the city centre’s Marriott Hotel on 10 December, and is expecting its end of year total to reach almost £40 million. Previous Sutton Kersh auctions throughout the year have generated more than £33m so far. Ahead of the event Cathy Holt, the firm’s head of auctions, says: “The figures for property sales this year point to a confident market, with lots of properties changing hands and considerably more investment in
property during 2015. So far this year we’ve sold 415 properties, and with one auction left to go we look set to reach a total of £40 million in property sales. “Our final auction of the year has more than 85 lots, so it looks set to be another big auction to end the year. “There are some really stand out properties in the auction, including a stunning period property of 11 selfcontained apartments in Liverpool’s Mossley Hill area, and a mixed-use commercial and residential building on Exchange Street East, offering great rental returns.” For further information visit www.suttonkersh.co.uk/auctions.

The Keel
FESTIVE WELCOME LINED UP FOR TENANTS AT THE KEEL The Keel is spreading festive spirit amongst its new tenants as they prepare to spend their first Christmas at the recently launched development. The Queens Dock private rented sector (PRS) scheme’s on-site management team is lining up a ‘get to know your neighbours’ drinks reception, and will also be sprucing up the site’s communal space with a Christmas tree. According to Touchstone Residential, which manages apartments at the former HMRC building and has been marketing the new homes alongside City Residential, staff have been working quickly to help tenants move into their properties before the festive season is in full swing. Matthew Smith, portfolio manager from Touchstone Residential, says: “We can be incredibly quick on getting tenants into their apartments and we’re acutely aware that some tenants moving in before Christmas won’t have lots of cash available, which is why we don’t charge any tenant administration fees. Tenants only need to pay their rent and deposit. “We’re also entering the Christmas spirit and will be throwing a ‘get to know your neighbours’ drinks reception for all of our tenants in the run-up to the festive season.”
In its latest project, the Merseyside housebuilder is creating five three-storey, three-bedroom mews homes on a site at Baytree on Smithy Lane in the Little Sutton area. The scheme is set to be completed in May 2016, and the firm has now brought the properties to the market as it welcomes off-plan reservations. Homes at the site are set to feature open-plan living and dining spaces with contemporary fitted kitchens and integrated appliances, two bedrooms and a family bathroom to the first floor with a large master bedroom on the second floor. Bi-fold doors overlooking rear gardens and a secure gated private car park will also be included in the new-build family homes. For more information, contact Forth Homes on 0151 909 3007. Advice from chartered accountants and property tax experts
0151 228 8977
Julia Casimo
An unwilling landlord Q: My mum had to move into residential care five years ago. She has two pensions: her state pension and a works pension, which are taxed at source. As they aren’t enough to meet the care home fees, we decided to let out her house to go towards the shortfall. There is no mortgage on the house and the rent is £900 a month. As my Mum does not make any profit at all from the rents (because they all go to pay her care home fees), I don’t think that she needs to pay any tax. Is this correct? A: Basically no. Although I can see that it might seem unfair, your Mum needs to be completing a tax return and paying tax on the rental profits going forwards. She will also need to bring her tax position up to date which will involve paying any back tax along with interest and penalties. I would advise that the best way to do this would be to use the Let Property Campaign which is being run by HMRC at the moment. It is reported that HMRC have raised £7.9 million in additional tax as a result of the campaign so far, but that they still believe that there are significant number of landlords who have not yet come forward. Making a disclosure is a two stage process. Initially you will need to notify HMRC that you wish to use the facility – and then follow this up with a full disclosure, calculations and an offer within three months of HMRC’s acknowledgement of your notification. This route offers the best possible terms to get your Mums affairs in order. Penalties are 0%/10% or 20% depending on your circumstances and are self-assessed as part of the process. If you were to decide to wait until HMRC caught up with you, the penalties are likely to be up to 100% of the tax due. You can also make an offer to pay in instalments and our experience is that these requests are looked on sympathetically. The Let Property Campaign can also be used for the following situations: • Landlords with multiple properties • Landlords renting out overseas property • Specialist landlords with student or workforce rentals • Holiday lettings • Anyone renting out a room in their main home for more than £4,250 per year • People who live abroad for more than 6 months and rent out a property in the UK as they may still be liable to UK taxes For more information on how we can help you manage your property tax affairs – contact Julia Casimo on 0151 228 8977 or julia.casimo@jkca.co.uk at John Kerr Chartered Accountants, 369-371 Eaton Road, West Derby, Liverpool L12 2AH.

erseyside property agent and auctioneer, Smith and Sons celebrated its landmark 175th birthday with a classical evening at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. The Philharmonic, which also reached the same milestone this year, welcomed 60 Smith and Sons friends and associates alongside the team for a night of music led by the iconic orchestra’s renowned conductor, Vasily Petrenko. Guests also enjoyed a canapé reception before being seated in the Hope Street venue’s new grand circle, which forms part of the recent major refurbishment at the hall. Chris Johnson, managing partner at Smith and Sons, says: “We’ve enjoyed a full year of celebrations to mark our 175th but this is undoubtedly the highlight. The Philharmonic is a landmark institution for our city which ironically shares the same birthday year with us. What better way to celebrate!”

TALENT
INTERVIEW BY LAWRENCE SAUNDERS
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE IN A ROOM SURROUNDED BY YOUR LIFE’S WORK? It’s slightly embarrassing I have to say, I have to try and divorce that personal side of myself and look at it professionally. It’s a life’s work, the professional side of my life, not the personal side of my life. If it were the personal side of my life you wouldn’t see me for dust! For me it’s a real pleasure to look at certain items, because for me they have back-stories, there is lots of real poignant, rich, kind of memory in here [the room]. IN THE PAST RINGO STARR HAS BEEN CRITISED FOR SOME COMMENTS HE MADE ABOUT LIVERPOOL YOU WERE BORN NOT TOO FAR AWAY FROM HERE IN WHISTON SO HOW IMPORTANT TO YOU ARE YOUR ROOTS IN THE CITY? They are important but I don’t want to make a fetish out of it! Ringo was a bit ill advised to say what he said but I think it was a joke that went wrong. You can’t be the Beatles and still be living in Liverpool! For a writer, it’s easy; the pressure is not to move because you can write from anywhere. For a performer you have to head south or across the water because that’s where the centre of show business is. As a writer we don’t physically have to be there – our work does. So it’s easier for me. ‘EDUCATING RITA’ CELEBRATES ITS TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR AND CONTINUES TO BE PERFORMED ACROSS THE WORLD WHAT DO YOU THINK IT IS ABOUT THE PLAY THAT KEEPS PEOPLE REVISITING IT? I don’t know, it’s so difficult. My take is only as valid as anybody else’s – who can say what it is? But I think one of the facts is that central to ‘Educating Rita’ is a woman who’s trying to make life better. I think that is something that chimes with us all. That’s what life is isn’t it? We are all trying to make things better. MICHAEL CAINE DESCRIBED HIS ROLE OF FRANK IN THE FILM ADAPTATION OF EDUCATING RITA AS THE ‘LAST GOOD PICTURE I MADE BEFORE I MENTALLY RETIRED’ DID YOU HAVE MICHAEL CAINE IN MIND WHEN YOU WERE WRITING THE SCREENPLAY? No, but I have a very strict process when I write – a necessity. When I write, I can’t have an actors face in mind – it stops me writing the character. I didn’t have Michael Caine in mind for the role. The reason I didn’t have Michael Caine in mind for the role was because I always saw Frank as having an absolutely impeccable received pronunciation voice and I knew

Michael Caine – one of my favourite actors of all time. But I had filed Michael away under: English, working-class character – forgetting what a great actor he is! I’d insisted on Julie [Walters], so [director] Lewis Gilbert said if we are having Julie then we’ve got to have a star in the male role to get the funding. He said to me ‘what about Michael?’ I hesitated for a second and said ‘brilliant’. Michael saw what a wonderful talent Julie was and played with that not against it and the two of them on film is joyous.
used to type the majority Willy’s personal typewriter, the Kirkby display of his works, can be seen at
SOME OF YOUR BEST LOVED CHARACTERS HAVE BEEN CHILDREN IS THERE SOMETHING ABOUT YOUNGER CHARACTERS THAT YOU ENJOY WRITING ABOUT? I’m glad you’ve asked that question – the question I get asked most is, ‘why do you write so much about women?’ I’ve said on occasion, ‘why does nobody ever ask me why so much of my work is set in childhood?’ because it’s true! ‘Our Day Out’, ‘One Summer’, ‘Blood Brothers’, ‘The Death of a Young, Young Man’ – it always gets overlooked by the question about writing about women! But I love writing things set in childhood because there is a fantastic possibility in childhood and kids are not guarded and have not yet been molded into what they should do, they do what they feel like doing so have got an anarchy. They have access to imagination that is educated out of them a lot of the time. HOW MUCH DID YOU DRAW ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES BOTH AS A TEACHER AND OBVIOUSLY A SCHOOL CHILD WHEN YOU WROTE ‘OUR DAY OUT’? Massively. Obviously as a kid I had been taken out on a school trip very similar to that in the play and we had gone to souvenir shops where the shoplifting was rife. I remember the coach being stopped by police because of stuff being thrown out of the window. Appalling behavior! Later on as a teacher I was on the other side of the fence with kids from Shorefields school where I taught. I saw on that day, this story unfolding. I’ve often said that it’s the one play of mine that’s taken almost directly from life, I mean it’s not – all the things are heightened and invented, but it’s based certainly on my own experiences.
NEXT YEAR WILL BE YEARS SINCE YOUR LAST PRODUCTION ‘SHIRLEY VALENTINE’ DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR A NEW PLAY? I have plans for a new play almost every week! But the difference between having plans for a play and a play getting made is wide. We’ll see! I’m doing a lot of painting at the moment and at the moment that’s where my artistic expression is going but if an idea comes along I will certainly be on it. FINALLY DO YOU HAVE A SET PROCEDURE WHEN YOU WRITE DO YOU HAVE SOMEWHERE THAT YOU TAKE YOURSELF OFF TO WHEN YOU NEED TO GET WORK DONE? I used to have a room in the house that acted as an office but as soon as I had children, I noticed that if I heard my son crying downstairs I would break off my writing and go down. I was doing what all writers do – finding any excuse not to write. So very early on I moved my office out of the house and rented a space in the Everyman annex. You couldn’t avoid it then, you had to lock yourself in a cell! I wrote one of the songs in ‘Blood Brothers’ after coming into the office with a terrible hangover and I went down to put the kettle on and it just came to me. My agent once said, ‘if you’re not at the desk, it wont happen’ – there will come a time when you are at the desk and it still wont happen but if you’re in a pub talking about it instead of doing it then it definitely wont!

& Best for...
HOT DRINKS Christmas is around the corner and that means frantic shoppers and busy streets for the next month. If that’s too much for you and you want somewhere to relax with a hot drink, here are three ideal places to hide away on cold days.
CATALAN COFFEE Lunya, College Lane
THE BRINK
Parr Street, L1 One of the top coffee shops and delis in the city, previously visited by Luis Suarez, Rafa Benitez and current Everton boss, Roberto Martinez, Lunya not only has award-winning coffee, imported from Café Saula, Spain, but it also makes delicious hot chocolate which is a fantastic pick me up as the cold sets in this winter.
EXQUISITE ESPRESSO Panna, Tithebarn Street Treating its craft and drinks as an art form, this award-winning artisan café was recently named the best independent coffee speciality shop in the North of England. With its own hearty blend of coffee and delightful cakes, Panna provides a great escape from the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping. With friendly staff and a simple interior, Panna is worth discovering.
TEA TIME RETREAT Tea Parlour, Mathew Street The traditional tea room Tea Parlour may be located on the tourist magnet that is Mathew Street, but tucked on the first floor of View 2 Gallery it’s a true hidden gem. Enjoy a range of rare and limited edition as well as locally created loose leaf teas, from caffeine-free fruity brews to unusual mixes and classics like Earl Grey. Plus they’ll be served with a drop of vintage grandeur as drinks arrive in the café’s lovingly collected china.
It’s often said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day – I don’t know about that but it’s certainly my favourite; so when the UK’s first alcohol-free bar, The Brink, revealed it had developed a new breakfast menu I was eager to go along and try it out for myself. Upon entering the Parr Street venue for the first time, I was immediately put at ease by its laid-back décor and relaxed atmosphere, which was complemented perfectly by a chilled out playlist. After taking a seat in the corner with my dining partner, our friendly waiter was over in no time at all and was more than happy to answer any questions I had about the new menu. The revamped morning offering features a small but eclectic mix of traditional breakfast favourites such as the Full English and Eggs Benedict alongside more international dishes including pancakes, waffles and the American breakfast. Gazing over The Brink’s drinks menu I was pleasantly surprised to find a list of healthy smoothies and fresh presses nestled amongst the normal breakfast beverage fare.
REVIEW BY LAWRENCE SAUNDERS
Names such as Morning Glory, Beet Treat, Green Detox Machine and Roll Your Oats promised to offer the ‘perfect way to start your day’, and I was suitably intrigued to give one a try. Myself and my breakfast date decided to share an Instant Energizer (£2.45) to start – the orange, carrot and ginger infused smoothie was a delightful way to cleanse our palate before tucking into our ‘mains’. After consulting with our waiter I chose one of the menu’s new items, the classic Eggs Benedict (£6.50), and was not disappointed. The generously thickly-sliced glazed ham was delightfully sweet whilst the poached hen’s yolk and liberal helping of rich hollandaise sauce left plenty of goodness to mop up with the toasted brioche croute. My partner plumped for the smoked salmon with scrambled eggs (£6.95). Served on a slice of thick, artisan brown bread; the eggs were cooked to perfection and were seamlessly accompanied by
the salmon. The bread on both dishes was a particularly standout element and after speaking with our waiter we were impressed to discover that all the bread is produced daily in the on-site bakery. It’s clear head chef, Paul Elackman isn’t stingy when it comes to portions, as all three of the dishes we ordered were thankfully nice and large! This was certainly true of our final course, the waffles (£5.95), which came accompanied by a dish of warm fruit compote, maple syrup and banana ice cream. The contrast between the tart compote, sweet waffles and the velvety ice cream was delicately balanced and suitably satisfied my early morning sugar craving. Even with our plate of waffles, the bill still only came to £21.85, which I thought was more than fair, especially when you consider the substantial portion sizes. I fully intend to revisit The Brink again very soon and would put it right up there with some of the best breakfast spots in the city.

EXHIBITION
THE MUSEUM OF LIVERPOOL DECEMBER – JANUARY
Anyone looking for the perfect antidote to a traditional white Christmas should look no further than Licence To Thrill’s production of ‘Tis the Season’ at the Lantern Theatre. Not one for the faint-hearted or the easily offended, ‘Tis the Season’ is a work from a local theatre company which specialises in creating and performing its own plays in the style of the traditional French theatre practice Grand Guignol, meaning comedy, horror and plenty of shocks! Strictly for over-18’s only.
A
special exhibition in partnership with Homotopia from local award-winning photographer Stephen King that focuses on gender identity and the experiences of trans military veterans. Twelve large-scale portraits will be on display, featuring images of people from the region and across the country who took part in research by Dr Emma Vickers that looked at their lives before and after service in the armed forces.
