CENTRAL VILLAGE Having been marred by several years of delays, Liverpool city centre’s mixed-use £160 million Central Village scheme is now showing signs of progression. In recent weeks the extension and extensive refurbishment of Renshaw Street’s Watson Building to create office space at the site has reached completion. A neighbouring student accommodation element of the retail, leisure, residential and workspace project is expected to follow suit in 2016, with Legacy’s 192-bed student block anticipated to be ready for the arrival of the new academic year in September. Then there’s the area of the Boardwalk section of Central Village – a former Network Rail depot – which is said to be known as ‘Site B’. Speaking to Your Move earlier this year Neil Kirkham, associate director of CBRE which has been marketing this section of Central Village, highlighted that the site had historically had planning permission for a 10-storey, 240-bed hotel however its has “clearly got potential for alternative uses such as student or traditional residential”. Whilst Site B is regarded as the final part of Central Village, next year could bring confirmation as to whether new homes will sit alongside the proposed cinema, restaurants, outdoor seating areas and offices the overall project is set to create. 40 Your Move

BALTIC VILLAGE Work on this Baltic Quarter residential site overlooking the Liverpool waterfront initially began back in 2006, but was left abandoned just a year later following the collapse of its initial developer. The intervening years have seen the surrounding area undergo a major renaissance and in January it was announced that Promenade Estates had taken over the site and commenced construction work on a new private rented sector (PRS) scheme known as Baltic Village. Once completed, it will feature 324 luxury apartments and will be let on an American model offering residents their own concierge service, car parking space, meeting rooms and cafes. The mixed-use Baltic Village scheme will also feature an external area complete with seating and Wi-Fi that is open to both residents and the public. Peter Hynd, chairman of Promenade Estates, has confirmed that despite meeting challenges relating to the structure that had been left behind, construction is firmly on track and will be finished by the end of September 2016. Upon completion, the development will be handed over to residential property fund, Vista Fund following its agreement back in August with Hermes Investment Management to acquire the site for more than £50 million.

FESTIVAL GARDENS

KIRKBY TOWN CENTRE St Modwen pledged a “significant new housing scheme” as part of its regeneration of Kirkby town centre, when it announced in October that it had exchanged contracts to acquire the site from Tesco in a £35.8 million deal. Working in partnership with Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council on the multi-million pound retail-led scheme, which will aim to bring a long-awaited boost for the area, the developer, which is also currently working on Project Jennifer in North Liverpool, is lining up new homes for a 65-acre site close to the central shopping and leisure district. It’s still early days for the project, which is currently understood to be at the masterplanning stage, and finer details of how many homes and the types of properties which are being proposed have yet to be revealed, along with a timescale of when they will be developed. As the plans continue to progress, 2016 could bring answers to those questions and take the scheme a step closer to the commencement of work on site.

CAINS BREWERY VILLAGE

Back in November 2013, planning permission was granted to transform Liverpool’s historic Cains Brewery site into a major multi-million pound, mixed-use leisure and retail project, also including substantial residential accommodation. Up to 775 ‘high quality’ homes or 2,500 student bedrooms were a proposed feature within the initial £150 million plans, alongside a 94-room boutique hotel; a new Cains brewery, museum and event centre with rooftop ‘Sky Bar’; a four-screen independent art-house cinema; a supermarket; fitness centre; restaurants; an artisan food hall and a market for independent fashion retailers. Following the green light from Liverpool City

Council, a search for development partners and operators for the project’s leisure and retail offering was launched, with a view to see first phase completion of the scheme by summer 2016. In the meantime, the renaissance of the site’s Baltic Triangle surroundings has been continuing with other student accommodation and apartment developments pressing ahead, and an array of cafes, bars and event spaces opening up in the area. In October Sudargharar Dusanj, managing director of Robert Cain Brewery, told Your Move that interest from potential investment and development partners had “definitely picked up in the past six months”. Andy Delaney, director of development consulting and agency at Colliers International, which has been marketing the scheme, also confirmed it had attracted some “local and national, and also some international interest”. Whilst there may be no further movement to announce as the year draws to a close, maybe some progress will be on the horizon for Cains Brewery Village in 2016.

Liverpool City Council took over a 57-acre plot of the city’s former International Garden Festival site earlier this year, and the land is said to be the subject of future ideas for leisure and housing. Could we start to see some of those ideas take shape in 2016? Having become ‘derelict’, the plot was the focus of approved plans in 2007 for more than 1,300 homes when the lease was held by Langtree, however the scheme was delayed and then delivery partner, David McLean Homes entered administration. During a networking event hosted by Move Publishing in September, guest speaker Councillor Ann O’Byrne, the city’s Deputy Mayor, spoke of the potential the site still holds for residential development. “You’ll know we recently bought the Festival Gardens site; it’s a massive piece of land and there are some really great ideas going forward,” she said. “Because of where it is on the waterfront you could imagine the housing you could build there, but of course it’s a former tip and we need to spend a considerable amount of money clearing that site. That doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen, because it is.” At the time Cllr O’Byrne, who also suggested an ‘Eden of the North’ as an idea for a leisure offering on the plot due to its close proximity to the river, said such development on the Festival Gardens site would help the city’s waterfront, which has already seen substantial regeneration in recent years, to continue further. INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE WHITECHAPEL CENTRE AND ITS BACKGROUND It was set up in 1975, and was actually on Whitechapel in the city centre. Our enablement centre is now in Langsdale Street, which I suppose is the focal point for us, but we do have offices around the corner. Plus a lot of our staff are out and about visiting people and we manage two family hostels as well, so we’ve got several buildings, different projects and our outreach teams are on the streets. When the temperature drops to a certain level we also open the cold weather shelter. Lots of people worry over the winter about people sleeping out in the cold weather so if they do follow us on social media then we put announcements on our website, Facebook and Twitter as soon as we know the shelter is going to be open. It’s in St Stephen’s Church near the Women’s Hospital, so the church gives us its building overnight and it’s basically somewhere warm. We provide sleeping bags, it’s staffed and we have hot drinks available for people.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN PRIORITIES FOR THE WHITECHAPEL CENTRE AT THE MOMENT? We don’t want to see anybody sleeping on the streets of Liverpool but also it’s to prevent people becoming homeless and it’s about enabling people and giving them the skills they need to be able to live in their own properties, to live independently. HOW MANY PEOPLE ON AVERAGE ARE HELPED BY THE WHITECHAPEL CENTRE? Last year we worked with 2,605 different individuals throughout the year across all of our different projects, but we’re generally seeing an increase in people coming to ask us for help. IS SOMETHING IN PARTICULAR DRIVING THAT INCREASE? There’s a mix of things. It’s about changes to the benefit system, relationship breakdowns, mental and physical health, substance misuse – they’re all major issues for people and when those things start going wrong then sometimes, if people aren’t coping, losing their property is one of the consequences. We try and look at the root causes of homelessness because it’s not just about finding someone a property to live in, it’s about looking at the issues and why they’ve got to that point in the first place.

IS IT A CASE OF MAKING PEOPLE AWARE THAT IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE TOO? Yes, absolutely. In fact we’re launching our Christmas appeal and it’s all about how homelessness can happen to anybody. So many of our clients have held down very good jobs and then something has happened so part of our Christmas appeal is giving a list of all the different jobs our clients have had in the past, including barristers, teachers, hairdressers and all sorts of things. It’s about raising awareness that it can happen to anybody but also that there is help available. WHAT DOES CHRISTMAS MEAN TO THE WHITECHAPEL CENTRE IN TERMS OF DONATIONS BUT ALSO DEMAND FOR ITS SERVICES? From a donation point of view it’s fantastic because people really do think about homelessness at Christmas. We see a massive increase in the number of items and the amount of money that gets donated to us, and with the cold weather people also share the ‘No Second Night Out’ number on social media. From a service point of view though, we want to get people off the streets before it gets really cold so our staff are working hard to get people indoors and Christmas is a very difficult time for families. Sometimes people will go home for Christmas and

they’ll get taken back in to the family, but then there’ll be an argument or something will happen and they’re asked to leave again. The Christmas holiday is a very emotional time for a lot of people so the pre-Christmas period is busy for us but then actually January is equally as busy for different reasons. CHRISTMAS IS A TIME WHEN LOTS OF PEOPLE CONSIDER GIVING TO CHARITY BUT WHAT SUPPORT IS NEEDED FOR THE WHITECHAPEL CENTRE ALL YEAR ROUND? We have some really lovely supporters all year round so we do keep getting donations throughout the year but it does peak at Christmas. If people just remember the ‘No Second Night Out’ telephone number and call us if they see somebody that’s rough sleeping, even if that’s all they do for us for the rest of the year, that would be brilliant. It’s so that our outreach team knows where it can find people because they do move around the city and get moved on. Homelessness, unfortunately, doesn’t stop at Christmas – it’s an all year round thing. The more support we can get generally through the year is fantastic. WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO HELP HOMELESS PEOPLE IN THE CITY? Very directly, call the ‘No Second Night

Out’ line if you see somebody rough sleeping. You can also fundraise for us or make a donation. We rely on food and toiletry donations because we provide breakfasts, meals, hot showers and fresh clothes for people, and volunteering is important as well. Quite a lot of the food preparation and stuff like that is done by volunteers in the centre. We’re also about to open a charity shop on Allerton Road, so if people don’t want to volunteer in the centre then maybe they could do a few hours in the shop, or come and buy or donate goods there. There are lots of ways people can get involved, and as much as anything it’s about sharing awareness and knowing there is help available. If people are worried about someone they can give us a call. WHEN WILL WHITECHAPEL CENTRE’S FIRST SHOP OPEN AND WHAT DIFFERENCE IS IT GOING TO MAKE FOR THE CHARITY? It will open before Christmas but we haven’t got a definite date yet. It’s going to mostly sell clothing, books and stuff that isn’t suitable for our service users. We make sure our users have got everything they need and then obviously there are some things like party dresses and fur coats that we’re not going to be handing out to them.

Yes, it’s open from 8am until 8pm on weekdays and 8am until 5pm at weekends so people can drop in any time to make donations or service users can drop in if they need help, and nobody needs to make an appointment with us. I suppose the other thing is just that if people want to have a little look around they are welcome to call in. THERE SEEMS TO BE A LOT OF LOCAL BUSINESSES AND CHARITABLE INITIATIVES GETTING BEHIND THE WHITECHAPEL CENTRE AT THE MOMENT HAS THERE BEEN A BIG BOOST IN AWARENESS IN THAT SENSE? We seem to get a lot of support from restaurants and bars and maybe it’s because they’re leaving work late at night and probably seeing people on the streets. Quite a lot of our supporters tend to be younger people as well, and I don’t know whether they haven’t quite associated yet with some other charities but can easily relate to homelessness, being that they themselves are only a pay packet or two away from not being able to pay their rent. It just rings bells with a lot of people at the moment and I think people are generally struggling, but Liverpool’s a fantastic place that really does show community spirit.

MEET FATHER CHRISTMAS Arguably the most famous spot in the city to meet old Saint Nick, generations of local children have flocked to Lewis’ Christmas Grotto since it was first opened as a ‘Christmas Wonderland’ in 1879. Regarded as one of the first of its kind anywhere in the world, the operation was moved to the fourth floor of Rapid Hardware in the former George Henry Lee

building following the closure of Lewis’ in 2010. In order to recreate an identical feel to the much-loved original, the same display team, joiner, painter and electricians all assisted with the move. Now into its sixth season, Lewis’ Christmas Grotto is firmly settled into its new home and is ready to welcome children this year with its Peter Pan theme.

PANTOMIME FUN

When it comes to family fun at Christmas, a trip to see a pantomime at the theatre is an annual tradition for many, and here in Liverpool we’re spoilt for choice (oh yes we are!). The Liverpool Empire, though, has become renowned for attracting some of the biggest stars to its stage. Henry Winkler and Liverpool legend, the late Cilla Black have both put in memorable performances in years gone by. For 2015, the venue’s production of Dick Whittington is no different with popular TV actress, Sally Lindsay - best known for her role as barmaid Shelley in Coronation Street taking on the part of the magical Fairy Fazakerley alongside Emmerdale’s Kurtis Stacey as the lead. This will be first time in more than 20 years that the classic rags-to-riches tale has played in the city and it’s sure to be worth the wait. The family-friendly show runs from 12 December until 3 January.

There’s nothing quite like a performance of Christmas carols and traditional music to fill you with festive cheer, and the city has plenty of stunning places to sit and listen. Our pick, for its annual carol services as well as the sheer beauty of the gothic building and its surrounding grounds, is Liverpool Parish Church of Our Lady & St Nicholas – or St Nick’s, appropriately. Each year, St Nick’s runs carol services and in 2015 they will be regularly taking place until 16 December when there will be a ‘city carols’ concert with the Merseyside Police Band. A special maritime concert will then be held at the nearby cruise terminal on 20 December for a unique experience, with the traditional ‘Candlelit Nine Lessons and Carols’ to follow with music from St Nicholas’ singers.

CHRISTMAS BAKES People look forward to different parts of Christmas. For some it’s presents or seeing old friends and family…but for many it’s all about the food. It’s not just Christmas dinner either - cafes and bakeries across the city have a selection of delicious treats to sample throughout December. With that in mind, here are three places you really ought to visit before the year is out.

PRINCELY PUDDINGS Ray’s Bakery, Allerton Road Initially based in Prescot, wellestablished craft bakery, Ray’s, opened a new branch on Allerton Road in 2012. Ray’s particularly prides itself on its Christmas puddings, which are made from a Guinness, barley wine and brandy mix featuring only the finest fruits, nuts and cherries. The Bakery also offers a full range of regular and mini mince pies.

TEA TIME TREATS Cuthbert’s Bakehouse, Mount Pleasant Cuthbert’s Bakehouse offers traditional afternoon tea throughout the year, but in December it takes on a Christmassy feel with a limited edition festive menu. A seasonal twist on Cuthbert’s afternoon fare, it features a selection of classic favourites alongside Cuthbert’s own recipes including seasonal red velvet cake, mini mince pies and brandy-soaked Christmas pudding.

ALL-TIME FAVOURITES Satterthwaites Bakehouse, Coronation Road, Crosby

Satterthwaites has been baking on Merseyside in one form or another for over 100 years. Still based in Crosby, its bakehouse continues to produce some of the firm’s much-loved treats including Bavarian slices and lemon drizzle cakes. For the festive season this year, it is offering indulgent mince pies topped with brandy butter and classic Christmas cakes.

ARCHIE’S BURGERS & SHAKES

Ranelagh Street, L1 McDonald’s brought hamburgers to the mainstream 75 years ago with its first branch in San Bernadino, California, laying the bun-based foundations for everyone to follow. Fast-forward to 2015 and Archie’s Burgers and Shakes can claim to be the modern interpretation of the burger joint with retro-styled fittings, almost exclusively in pink, and neon lighting. Music, celebrity-inspired milkshakes and the occasional visit by stars of the screen, charts and sport is immediately apparent when you look at the menu; Amir Khan, Corrie Chic’s and Game Time, for instance. Following the success of the Manchester site, Archie’s opened in Liverpool and has already made its mark on the city – becoming a favourite for lunches and student meals – with plans for a possible second location. The mission statement is simple; good food, good shakes, good music and good times. The menu we tasted is well priced with a threecourse meal coming to around £15, depending on your order, with high-quality service – so you definitely get your money’s worth. To start, I dived right in and ordered a shake; the

Archie’s was not too heavy or too sickly but a good mix of butterscotch, toffee sauce and Oreos. My companion chose the Berry smoothie and found it packed a punch. For the first course, we went for the highly recommended chicken wings, which can be cooked in one of five sauces of your choice. I chose the Louisiana spice while my partner chose the Piri Piri which are both high on heat – be careful with their one chilli logo for spice levels. Messy but tasty, they were a nice opener at three wings for £1.99. For a main course you can choose hot dogs, chilli dogs or wraps but of course we went for a burger, with plenty of choice from chicken and lamb to beef and the recently launched ‘Stars’. I chose the Superstar burger for £5.99; a straight forward, freshly made patty on a brioche bun with the tangy and intriguing Archie’s special sauce. My guest chose the ‘Ringo Star’ burger (£6.49), a handmade beef burger with the usual toppings accompanied by onion rings, mayo and BBQ sauce. We both found the burgers flavourful without being greasy and the lack of a

gherkin/pickle, unlike high street franchises, was a welcomed option. The presentation was simple - trays and paper bags like a typical burger bar - but it’s all about the flavour. On the side of the burgers were the fries, again plenty of choice including crinklecut, French, chilli and cheese coated. I went for curly fries while my partner picked sweet potato. Again, not too greasy or overdone, and the Piri Piri dip with a hint of spice was very nice. To finish, we both ordered the very popular waffles at £4.75 each – which I am told have gone down well in the city. I ordered the Cookies & Cream; Oreo cookies with chocolate sauce, and my partner – feeling festive – went for the Snowflake; Malteasers and white chocolate. Both were served with ice cream. The waffles were light and full of flavour and so was the smooth ice cream, but by this point, it was too much and I was defeated. To sum up, Archie’s is the perfect place for a quality burger or fast food-esque meal in a vibrant restaurant that caters for all ages.
