Living away from home for the first time can quickly turn into a financial and personal nightmare if not fully prepared.
Other than showering students with ‘pocket money’, most of which will be spent on booze, here are some more ways you can support them.
University accommodation can be a sound investment for landlords and potentially generates a much higher yield than letting a property to a single tenant.
Private landlords will usually ask student tenants for a guarantor, normally a parent or guardian. This is not a referee, guarantors are legally bound to cover costs if the tenant doesn’t pay rent or causes damage to the property.
Offer flexible tenancy agreements. Nine month tenancy agreements are the most popular and safest option for landlord and tenant.
Know your money. Finances can easily take a backseat but remember to punctually pay your rent, put aside for quarterly household bills, and pay council tax (if there is a non-student housemate then students are only entitled to a 25 per cent exemption). Also take full advantage of NUS cards as it offers a multitude of discounts.
Ensure deposits are safeguarded by the Tenancy Deposit Scheme when in private accommodation.
If your child faces financial difficulty there are some crutches available. The easiest is the Student Graduate Account; don’t be blinded by all the bells and whistles, go with the one offering the longest 0 per cent overdraft. Universities also offer the Hardship Loan (£100 - £500) and the Hardship Grant (£500 - £3500).
Surviving housemates is essential. Set boundaries when you move in; who will do those pesky household chores, don’t annoy everyone by leaving mouldy cups under your bed, and definitely do not sneak away milk/bread/cheese – it will lead to a world of trouble and post-it notes on the fridge.
Mini fridges, young person rail cards, prepaid gas cards and Blackwell’s gift cards are always handy little presents.

Personally I would like to see the grand master Leonardo Da Vinci exhibit here and although I’m sure the Louvre wouldn’t allow it, ‘The Mona Lisa’ would easily draw in massive numbers and give many a chance to appreciate a masterpiece they otherwise wouldn’t be able to see. His other works such as ‘The Last Supper’ are also spectacular and would be of great interest to the region. Here’s hoping! Failing that, I think we ought to showcase a collection of local talent on this scale and give recognition to the many talented artists we have locally.”

After a whopping 93,912 people visited the Picasso: Peace and Freedom exhibition at Tate Liverpool, who would you like to see exhibit at Tate Liverpool? “I never had the opportunity to go to the Picasso exhibition in Liverpool which was a shame. The only piece of art I have ever wanted to see was Picasso’s Guernica, it’s the only piece I have ever wanted to see and I fulfilled my ambition to see it when I went to Madrid this year, but I don’t think they could bring it over here. I love the piece because of its fame and notoriety, and the story behind the painting is very moving. Picasso painted this during the Spanish Civil War in response to the bombing of Guernica. It is a very tragic reminder to all of us.”

What attracted you to Canning Street? We have always wanted to live around this area; it’s nice and quiet with a nice mix of people. We wanted to live near the gardens on Falkner Square and this was ideal. What’s the layout of the apartment? It is a large apartment with two bedrooms and big sash windows. There’s an open plan kitchen and living area, very modern. Georgian houses are always much bigger than they look with lots of character.
Tell us about the living area... The apartment has a very vintage look. We’ve put the studded armchair in there, which was a gift from my old neighbour. The centre piece is the book case with my Christian Louboutins on display. Joe bought them for me for my 21st birthday, I’ve worn them a few times but I love to display them! Also on the bookcase we have all our favourite books, the Twilight series is my favourite, and old cameras as Joe likes photography.
Rachel and J oe What about the bedroom? You’re not allowed to paint or do much so everything is very simple; we have a picture of The Rolling Stones we’re going to hang though. The second bedroom is smaller so it’s our own walk-in wardrobe.
Tell us about the kitchen? It’s open plan with the living room all in the same room, and a lovely marble island. My boyfriend is a great cook he makes a great risotto. When we have some friends round we’re going to make full use of it.
What are your favourite features? I love the ceiling in the main room with the big glass chandelier, which was here when we moved in. The landlord told me the chandelier has always been a part of the room even before he moved in years ago. When we arrived there was this old trunk in the front room which is beautiful, Joe is going to put his decks and vinyl records in it.

And finally, what would be your dream buy? We want a really big TV; as long as it looks nice and it’s plasma we’re going to put it where the old TV is in the corner.

Best dressed man With a style best described as ‘Sixties French/American Film Star’ Liverpool photographer and musician Johnny Sands was always destined to impress the like-him-or-loathe-him editor of GQ Magazine Dylan Jones. With the first ever Best Dressed Man of Britain award under his vintage belt Johnny talks to Dina Karim of fashion, glitzy awards and fashion faux pas.

How does it feel to win GQ’s Best Dressed Man of Britain award? It’s a bit unreal. The competition was searching throughout the country for the best dressed man or whether you knew him. You could enter online, but I was entered by my beautiful wife, she believed I was Britain’s best dressed man, we had seen it in the magazine and had talked about it but I never thought I would win – then again it makes sense I do spend a lot of time thinking about fashion. They put me on their website very quickly and it was on the main page of GQ, they wrote such a lovely blurb about me, I then had to send in a write up of my style and favourite designers. What did the Editor Dylan Jones say about your style? Dylan said they loved the look, and especially my hair. He said the standard was incredibly high but, in the end, there could be only one winner. He said I impressed the judges with my eclectic style, which was felt to embody the very best of the British man. You were invited to the GQ Man of the Year Awards, any star-struck moments? Johanna, my wife, and I got to walk down the red carpet and had dinner and drinks – it was very glitzy. Martin Scorsese was there, and David Cameron, Mark Ronson, Alexa Chung, and we got to chat to all of
them. I was star struck by Giorgio Armani and model David Gandy. And the £25,000 wardrobe you won? I just got back from London where I went to Berluti, the famous shoe makers, to pick a pair of shoes, and was also fitted for a tailor made suit from Zegna’s Sartoria collection. My favourite prize are the Berluti shoes, they are the Ferrari of shoes. I’m not sure whether to wear them or freeze them. I also won a tan leather 24-hour Bladon bag by Dunhill and a TAG Heuer watch. Where does your sense of style originate from? Fashion and music have always gone hand in hand so when I started performing I really started to notice clothes. When I was 16 I really wanted some flares, but I couldn’t find any. So I bought some bootcut jeans, stitched up the sides and opened the bottom of the legs to put in panels. It all started with these flares, and now it’s a love affair, literally my wife is a fashion designer! In the high street I buy Reiss, Topman and Zara. I used to do a lot of vintage shopping but never have the time now. My favourite things in my wardrobe are my Alexander McQueen scarves, my Russell & Bromley loafers, my Mulberry bag and I love my vintage watches. My style hasn’t changed that much over the years; it’s always been quite unique. I think the main change is that my style now is just right, tailor right. Jo does all my tailoring for me so they fit my shape. Tell me about some fashion faux pas? The worst thing I ever bought was probably an oversized Levi’s sheepskin jacket, not because of the jacket but because it was huge on me, oh yeah and maybe a peach
blazer – pastels were in but not for me. Your GQ blurb said you are a ‘francophile promoter, producer and musician’ – tell us a bit more? I’m currently restoring antique picture frames and continuing with my photography. I do Black and White romantics of Liverpool and Paris - I have a show in Pushka Restaurant in Liverpool right now. I also run an acoustic night at Leaf Café ‘Out of the Bedroom’ on the first Tuesday of every month. I’m currently working on a new acoustic album; half is acoustic half electro which should be out by December. SUPERHERO CANVAS I am currently renting a two bedroom apartment in the city centre. My son who is seven comes to stay at weekends. I would like to make his bedroom, which also doubles up as my office during the week, more child like! I don’t want to decorate the room with wallpaper as I need to use the room as well. he Lawns restaurant at Thornton Hall Hotel offers an exquisite dining experience in its beautifully paneled dining room overlooking stunningly landscaped grounds. On this rare occasion to meet for lunch a little out of the city, sales and marketing manager at the national housebuilder Keepmoat Homes, Jen Brown, is my guest. In recent years, Keepmoat Homes has built up a reputation

get on the ladder. “We had a phenomenal response to the properties at Hamilton Place,” says Jen. “There’s already a lot of interest in our forthcoming sites, Princess Park, and the Queens Bedford site at the other end of the city, in Bootle.” At the latter, a mixture of two, three, and four bedroom homes will be appealing to families in semidetached and mews-style houses, and the development will launch in three phases, totaling 160
“the Whitby cod with gem hearts, tarter sauce and duck fat chips with vinegar arrives exquisitely cooked” for family orientated, marketable new build homes in the north-west, with the popular Hamilton Place development in North Huyton seeing a number of successful phases create new homes for the local community. This year, the housebuilder is set to launch a number of new sites across Liverpool and the surrounding areas. Princess Park, off Princess Drive in Huyton, will see 60 units comprising two and three bedroom homes in mews, semidetached and detached house styles, with prices starting from £99,950. In addition, Keepmoat is running its own shared equity scheme to help first time buyers
units. She added, “We’re covering the full spectrum here. It’s a large development in Bootle, and it’s exciting because the area doesn’t have much in the way of new build schemes at the moment. We research what our potential buyers are looking for, and we’ve tailored the developments to accommodate their requirements.” To start, Jen and I enjoy sampling warm, freshly baked bread as we peruse the a la carte menu, before deciding on cream of cauliflower soup with parmesan, to be followed by Whitby cod with gem hearts, tartare sauce and duck fat chips with vinegar – which arrives exquisitely cooked
and beautifully presented. Jen and I return our attention to the developments, and the plans for a site of 76 units in Rainhill in partnership with Helena Housing. While the developer is ambitious, the well-researched property offer is sure to appeal, and the challenge of managing the increasing number of sites is precisely what appealed to Jen, who joined the firm in May this year. With six years at another leading housebuilder under her belt, Jen’s career has seen her turn around sales at another developer’s Midlands sites, smashing sales targets, before joining Keepmoat, and she’s taken to new role with relish. She adds “The Rainhill site will have a show home ready in November, and that’s going to attract a lot of interest in the
local community. I welcome that – word of mouth makes a big difference and if people want to have a look around and then tell their friends and family about us then they’re very welcome to do so.” Over coffees and chocolate Jen tells me that in her spare time she enjoys socialising with friends, city breaks and holidays abroad, and a long weekend up in the Lake District. “I love what I do, and I’ve made the most of all opportunities to really progress up the ladder. We’re currently recruiting for sales staff to work on our new sites, so it’s a busy time for us – but I do enjoy a challenge.” With that, it’s back to the office and the preparations to launch those exciting new schemes – watch this space.

Biennial Art Cinematic encounters From September 18 to November 28 Liverpool is transformed into the most amazing living gallery of new art - showcasing the best contemporary artists from around the world. This year’s Liverpool Biennial’s International Exhibition is Touched consisting of around 40 new projects by leading and emerging international artists. Liverpool Biennial
The shows are scattered all over the city, often in pretty strange places, but introduces British audiences to up-and-coming international artists brilliantly. Other exhibitions include: Bloomberg New Contemporaries, City States, the John Moores Painting Prize and S.Q.U.A.T. Liverpool. The Independents festival will run in conjunction with the Biennial at various sites. This winter’s biggest film has to be the eagerly anticipated first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The last book of the Harry Potter series has been split into two parts and will be released in 2D, 3D and IMAX, with the first part showcasing on November 19, and the second screening in July 2011. In this instalment, Voldemort has control of the Ministry of Magic. Harry, Hermoine and Ron set out to destroy the secret to Voldemort’s immortality - the Horcruxes and uncovers the legend of the Deathly Hallows. According to director David Yates, Part I will end around Chapter 24 with Voldemort obtaining the Elder Wand, one of the three Deathly Hallows. The film is expected to end shortly after the chase scene in the woods when Harry, Hermoine and Ron are captured by the Snatchers. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II will focus on the
battle for Hogwarts and the conclusion of the story. The director has announced that, for the final scene in the film which is set 19 years after the film's main story, older actors will not be cast to play the main characters. Special effects will be used to depict the cast members as adults. Liverpool One Odeon is the only cinema with an IMAX screen (a giant wrap-around screen and laseraligned digital sound).
Kim Cattrall
Hollywood star Kim Cattrall and Royal Shakespeare Company veteran Jeffery Kissoon will be heading up an illustrious cast in the epic tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra at Liverpool Playhouse from October 8 until November 13. Director Janet Suzman will bring Shakespeare’s profound, multi-layered vision to life in a thrilling modern adaptation that will sparkle with flashes of period detail. Antony and Cleopatra will see hotly anticipated Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall take to the stage in her home city with Jeffery Kissoon who has worked extensively for the RSC, the National Theatre and the Barbican. Janet has played many of the Shakespearian heroines and her own Cleopatra in 1973 is widely considered a definitive performance.
The music round up Never disappointing the live music scene in Liverpool has something for everyone over the next few months. Pulled Apart by Horses take the stage at the Shipping Forecast on September 22, and the voice of English Folk music Kate Rusby follows at the Philharmonic on September 23. Rising stars Sound of Guns will be at O2 Academy October 1. The Cavern Club celebrate John Lennon’s 70th birthday on the 9th and The Killers frontman
Brandon Flowers will go solo at O2 Academy (14). Liverpool Music Week begins mid October with highlights including Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip (Nov 3) and Leftfield (Nov 25). November 15 also presents Michael Bolton at Liverpool Philharmonic.
