And just as a freshly pressed shirt, tidy hair and polished shoes can work wonders in showing you’re the right person for the job – so can careful styling of your home optimise its chances of getting sold. Home ‘dressing’ or staging, as it’s called in the US, simply helps buyers better visualise the new and improved life they would be able to enjoy there. And it’s never been more relevant than now. “Dressing the home has become even more important to selling a property since the

credit crunch,” says TV’s original House Doctor, Ann Maurice, whose series of the same name introduced the concept to the UK. “Previously property would sell eventually, even if it took a price drop or two to make that happen. Dressing made a sale happen quicker, for a better price. “Now with only 50 per cent of properties on the market selling even after 12 months, staging is essential to making a property stand out from the crowd.” The primary element of the home staging is seeing your property through a buyer’s eyes. “A buyer is looking for

negative factors,” explains Ann. “I always tell clients that you can’t sell a house how you live in it. Preparation is essential.” NO MORE STUFF The three top rules in the professional home stylist’s handbook run like this: Declutter. Declutter. Declutter. Toys, nests of wires, paint tins and piles of takeaway leaflets are an unfortunate reminder to buyers of what their own home looks like – and are likely part of the reason they want to move. “People think, ‘why have they got kitchen rolls piled up on the fridge? Isn’t there space

in the cupboard?’” says Karen Jennings of Changing Places. Make a start on the packing, recommends Karen, to get rid of it. “You have to de-personalise the property of stuff like photographs, posters in the kids’ bedrooms and strong tastes in decor or artwork,” says Ann. If this investment isn’t reinforced with sufficient teaching standards however, then those benefits are going to be wiped out.”

Following the recent threat of closure to the £24 million secondary school Christ the King, only two years after it was built, we ask the question should state money be poured into improving teaching standards in existing schools or into building state-of-the-art schools?

“Money should go into existing schools and more importantly into teachers, to create smaller classroom sizes. In the case of Christ the King, Knowsley MBC demolished purpose built comprehensive schools due to declining numbers and pupils following the money to neighbouring Local Education Authorities (LEA). The rationalisation of schools could have freed up resources to attract high quality teachers to lift the LEA off the bottom of the national league tables, and release Building Schools for the Future monies to upgrade those schools in greatest need of rebuild or refurbish.”

“The answer is dependent on the existing infrastructure, where the fabric of an area including schools needs regeneration a state of the art academy such as North Liverpool academy is fundamental. The massive investment in new schools over the past 10 years now needs supporting by continuous skills developments of the existing teaching populace to reflect the changing technology and social communication media challenges on offer to students.”

“Building new schools creates employment within the construction industry so it helps unemployment figures, that said though, it is beneficial to improve current teaching. There’s two sides of the coin and neither one outweighs the other. The problem is that there should be more thought going into new schools being built. I think teaching standards are very good, a lot of my friends are teachers, but I do think they should be allowed to develop more as teachers and to act less as administrators.”

“In Knowsley our education sector has been transformed by building new schools, we’ve already replaced our old schools which are now designed around modern concepts. The basic problem is that the old schools were out of date and beyond repair and weren’t appropriate for modern teaching such as for ICT. Having pupils sitting in rows of desks in military style might not be the best way to teach pupils. Improving teaching and improving schools go together, the two are complementary. You need new buildings alongside new techniques of teaching to get the best from pupils.”

What attracted you to Sevenoaks? I’ve lived in this area all my life so I didn’t want to move away from my family. The site is very modern - I’ve never seen new houses with such big windows and you don’t really get balconies on these types of developments. The house is also really energy efficient with solar panels which helps with the energy bills.

Tell us about the kitchen? The kitchen/dining room is very well maintained. The high gloss black cabinets work really well with the silver tops, and we love the big American fridge.

What’s the layout of the house? The home is designed over two floors with a very big living room downstairs and three bedrooms upstairs. It’s also got a good size backyard where we will definitely be having friends over soon for BBQs.

What do you like about the living area? We like that they asked us how we wanted it to be decorated, it was the same for all the rooms we got to choose each colour. We settled for a magnolia colour and have themed each room according to a colour scheme. The living room is black and white. We have personalised it with our pieces - one of my favourites is the picture done by my uncle which was a Christmas present.

What about the bedroom? All three rooms are a very good size, and again we’ve kept to a colour scheme with earthy colours like orange. The cat’s always sneaking in to the bedroom. The large windows are great and we just love the balcony.

And the bathroom? We have two bathrooms, one which is an ensuite, which is very handy. Again, we had the option of picking our own tiles, the colour and shape. And, we love the size of the main bathroom so it has a bath and an electric shower.

FILMING LIVERPOOL Liverpool has a strong pull on its home-spun celebrities, and it’s no different for That Peter Kay Thing writer and Peep Show actor Neil Fitzmaurice who set his latest film Charlie Noades RIP in his hometown. Against the background of a Liverpool struggling to survive after the sharp decline of the city’s docks the comedy tells the story of a family trying to make a living in a business that belongs to a different time. Actor, writer and director Neil reveals what drove him to write this film and why the film industry should start looking North for its talent.

INTERVIEW BY DINA KARIM North Star Productions new film Charlie Noades RIP is a big departure from the last film you wrote Going off Big Time. Why did you write such a different film to your last one, which really launched you as an actor/writer? Going off Big Time is a gangster film I wrote over ten years ago. I wanted to write something different like a comedy so I started writing Charlie Noades. It’s about family and supporting each other, the business is on its last legs and my character gets left a chest in his will. The chest contains diaries telling a story from the old days of the yard. It tells the story about a shipment of gold buried in the 50’s and the desperate attempts to find it, now the diaries have been passed on I embark on a modern age treasure hunt. My background is comedy and that’s why I want to stay doing this kind of thing. You started filming Charlie Noades in 2007, why has it taken such a long time for it to get on the big screen? Finance in this country is really difficult to raise, in London it’s easier to do because they understand how to raise finance. The film only ended up costing £300,000 in the end, but still it was hard. For this film we’ve got a staggered distribution to make it work financially - when I did Going off Big Time we did a big release but I ended up losing the rights to the film for a long

time and that’s how distribution works so this time we’re doing a rolling release. We showed the film in Cannes where it received really positive reviews. You got some great actors to come onboard and do this film, how did you manage to secure them all on such a tight budget? I basically made a wishlist, then got in touch with everyone thinking only some would do it. But then John Thomson of The Fast Show, John Henshaw of Looking for Eric and Dave Spikey who I worked with on Phoenix Nights said yes straightaway. I’m just so proud of the work that everybody put in to get this film made, it was a true labour of love and we had to overcome a lot of obstacles to get here. It’s independent cinema at its purest and a lesson of just what can be achieved with dedication, inspiration and a lot of perspiration. Your first film was critically acclaimed and nominated for four British Independent Film Awards. How did you get started in the film industry? I started working as an actor but because I was in Liverpool it was hard to get to get an agent so I started doing stand up comedy, and then me and Peter Kay started working together on That Peter Kay Thing and from there we wrote Phoenix Nights and I also acted on Peep Show as Jeff Heaney. So my background has always been comedy. It was great recognition being nominated for my film and then winning the British Comedy Award for my work on That Peter Kay Thing, to be acknowledged is just great. What do you think of the film industry in Liverpool?

Charlie Noades is a real Liverpool film because it’s about the docks and the decline of them, to be honest we could have set the film in any place really but the film really represents this city. There’s no film business based in Liverpool and I really want to make that happen. Plenty of filmmakers come to the city but then they don’t stay, so I want to set up a training academy to train people to work in the background and front of camera. Right now we’re trying to encourage financing there’s a lot of money that can be made from films. Other than encouraging Liverpool’s burgeoning film industry, what other projects are you involved in? I do the drivetime show on Radio City which is really good fun, but comedy is my first love. We want to keep on making homegrown movies that feature this wonderful city of Liverpool and all it’s talents. I’ve got a new script we’re working on now and soon the big slog for financing will start. I’m also doing Benidorm in February and have lots of things planned in the horizon. Charlie Noades RIP is a family film and will run from January 21 in Liverpool’s Showcase Cinema, The Plaza, Crosby and The Scala in Prestatyn with more local cinemas to follow before being rolled out across the UK at the end of the month. INSPIRED SOLUTIONS BRANCH OUT he opening of a new branch of Inspired Solutions Ltd marked a resurgence of the craft of solid wood flooring in the city. Owners Tony Tunstall and Neil Hawksworth unveiled their new showroom at 27 Duke Street on January 20, where they will offer solid wood flooring for offices and domestic properties. The company, which opened its first showroom in Standish, Wigan, in 2009, specialises in wood designs like chevron, basket weave and herringbone. Mr Tunstall called the craft “a dying art”.

ITV1 DESCENDS ON LIVERPOOL FOR AUCTION WITH STUDIO 45

TV AUCTION FOR CHILDREN aurence Llewelyn-Bowen dropped into Liverpool again to present new show Auction Party filmed by ITV1. As flashbulbs flashed locals raised their paddles to bid for the exclusive items. All proceeds went to the Keep a Child Alive foundation, which helps children with AIDS and HIV in India and Africa. Studio 45’s creative director Zak Coldicutt helped organise the event by collecting as many items as possible for auction which included a Gwen Stefani designer dress and a signed photo of Julian Lennon.
