FESTIVAL GARDENS SUMMER LAUNCH Liverpool’s new-look Festival Gardens site, in Otterspool Promenade, is set to reopen this summer following a multimillionpound restoration. The site was home to the International Garden Festival for five months in 1984, but a series of failed ownership changes saw it fall into significant disrepair during the following 27 years. Owner and developer, Langtree, has now completed the first phase of its proposals to regenerate this once derelict 90-acre site. The first phase of works has centred on the restoration of the former gardens and has included the creation of four new bridges, newly created pathways, decorative pagoda roof tiles sourced from China and the planting of more than five million wild flower seeds.

Leading Japanese landscape architect, Satoru Izawa, was flown in especially to support the restoration of one of the site’s original features, the Japanese Garden, which stands alongside an Oriental Garden featuring a fully restored Chinese pagoda and Moon Wall. John Downes, managing director at Langtree, said: “Aided by a first class design team, and with the help and support of partners including Liverpool City Council, the Northwest Development Agency and the Land Trust, we have now completed the breathtaking transformation of the park.” The second phase of the project will see Langtree work with residential developers in bringing forward up to 1,374 new homes on 25 acres located on the area of the former Festival Hall dome.
Liverpool and Memphis ‘Rock ‘n Soul Mates’ The cities that gave the world the two greatest music icons are to join forces to become Rock ‘n Soul Mates. Liverpool, who fathered The Beatles, and Memphis, birthplace of Elvis Presley, are to become cultural siblings hoping to encourage tourists to explore the many links between the cities whose music and history shaped the world. Venues in both cities are choosing
a venue across the Atlantic Ocean and will be championing its Rock ‘n Soul Mate to all visitors. Iconic venues already confirmed include Beatles Story & Graceland, the new Liverpool Museum & Stax Museum of America Soul Music, Liverpool Maritime Museum & the Cotton Museum in Memphis and the Rock ‘n Soul Museum & The Beatles Story. Jerry Goldman, of The Beatles Story, said: “These ties are far from cosmetic. We are planning a
calendar of US and UK themed projects and cultural exchanges that will enrich the offer of both cities. The recently announced Elvis & Us Exhibition is just the beginning.” Elvis & Us is a joint exhibition, launching in Liverpool on September 28. The exhibition will explore the influence Elvis Presley had on the Beatles and UK musical contemporaries.
O2 guru Iroro Azanuwha not only helps the people who come into his store every day in his own time, he teaches the elderly how to use mobile phones and keep in contact with friends and family. After becoming well known for his knowledge and ability, Iroro, who works at Speke Retail Park decided to extend his mission to help people in his community by setting up workshops to help people use their phones. He purchased large buttoned phones specially made for the elderly, and now meets with the local community on the last Thursday of every month at the local tea dance at Liverpool Lighthouse in Anfield.

The Social Housing team at Weightmans LLP has won a place on Arena Housing Group’s new legal panel, meaning the firm will advise them on housing management and employment issues in relation to 14,000 property units in the North West.
After 15 years in the business, brothers Jeff and Jason Anderson have branched out to establish their own firm, Andersons Tree Surgeons. Jeff said: “I’m passionate about the business and I love working outdoors, especially in the summer - it’s a great way to earn a living. We maintain trees and work mainly domestically and privately, but do some commercial work too.” The company specialises in all aspects of tree work, including crown reduction, storm damage, thinning out, hedge cutting, dismantling and felling, garden maintenance and stump removal. Jeff is a graduate from Liverpool John Moores University with a degree in Countryside Management. The company also has an NPTC (National Proficiency Tests Council) qualification in Tree Surgery. They previously worked at Glendale Tree Services and Enterprise.

HMRC have announced plans to check the business records of 200,000 small businesses, including landlords. Under the new business records check scheme, HMRC officers seek to establish whether full and accurate records are being kept. When records are judged insufficient, the taxpayer is given advice and the promise of a follow-up visit. Eventually penalties of up to £3000 will be charged if record keeping is inadequate, whether or not there has been an underpayment of tax. This marks a tougher attitude from HMRC, who have said they hope to raise the eye-watering sum of £600 Million from the initiative over 4 years. Currently, HMRC scrutinise an individual’s tax affairs and record keeping only if they believe he or she has filed an inaccurate tax return and is therefore paying too little tax. But this new programme means inspectors will be able to focus on current year records before a tax return is even submitted – and a much tougher stance on penalties is being adopted. It is fair to say that many landlords’ record keeping could be substantially improved. A good record keeping system allows you to back up every figure which is on your tax return. In addition it can reduce your accountancy fees, and better allow you to understand who owes you money! If you are a landlord I would recommend that you keep the following basic records, for income tax purposes: • Record all rents when they fall due and when they are paid, and keep the records. • Keep all tenancy agreements. • Deposit rents into a bank account, which is separate from your main current account and keep statements, cheque book stubs and paying in books. • Record all purchases and other expenses as they arise and ensure, unless the amounts are very small, that you have, and keep, invoices or receipts for them. • Record all mortgage and loan payments and keep the statements. • Record all business related mileage. • If you have to put any of your own money into the business from your personal funds record the amount and the date, and unless it is obvious, the source of the funds. Similarly record the amounts you take out of the business. • If you are claiming Wear and Tear allowance, ensure you keep evidence that your property was furnished. • Write your records up weekly or monthly.

Londoner Shelley Mills moved into her loft apartment in the city centre’s Old Haymarket after relocating from Shoreditch. The property was bought through estate agent Andrew Louis.
Shoreditch is a creative part of London and I wanted something similar to what I lived in there – a place with character. I looked at quite a few properties when I came to Liverpool and fell for this one because of the red brick and high ceilings with exposed steel beams. The open plan design makes it sociable – you can cook and talk to friends at the same time. I’m also a stone’s throw from the lovely architecture of St George’s Hall and the Walker Art Gallery. I love music and travel. I used to work for an airline, which meant I was lucky enough to see a lot of the world. I love the food, colours and culture of Asia - Vietnam was memorable. Travel is a good education, I think. I met my partner, Michael, at Benicassim music festival in Valencia. He’s from Crosby and that’s how I ended up here.

I bought the chandelier picture at a shop in Spitalfields in London. It lights up at night. I like an eclectic mix of contemporary and vintage furnishings. I’m especially interested in modern furnishings at the moment. The unusual chair is from Hothouse and the Kartel lamp is from Ice Interior, both from the Home Quarter on Hanover Street. When I first moved to Liverpool I was in the store so often that eventually I was offered a job as a retail manager, which is what I do now. Working around gorgeous furnishings just makes me want more of them - my wages go straight back on new things. I’ve ordered a sofa and a Halo Vintage trunk which I can store things in and also use as a coffee table. We are also planning to put in wooden flooring throughout.

THE BEST BAR NONE Beth Tweddle MBE is one of the most successful British gymnasts of all time. She is a three times World Champion, holds 10 Commonwealth Games and European Championship golds, and is one of the UK’s top hopes for the 2012 Olympics. A member of City of Liverpool Gymnastics Club, this month the Cheshire-bred star will perform the routines on the uneven bars and floor in front of a home crowd at the British Championships at the Echo Arena. Your Move finds out how she does it.
You recently launched a campaign to find inspiring youngsters or adults to carry the Olympic Torch through Liverpool. Who inspired you, growing up? Kelly Holmes and Paula Radcliff were two people that I looked up to. They had injuries throughout their career, which I have also had, but they still achieved amazing results, which inspires me to do the same thing. Nowadays I would say my coach, Amanda Reddin. If I am having a tough time she knows how to bring me back up and if I am on a high she also knows how to bring me back down to earth. How did you first get into gymnastics? I first started gymnastics because I was too hyperactive and my parents wanted to channel my energy. I tried out a lot of different sports including swimming and ballet but gymnastics was the one I really took to. You’ve been training since the age of seven. You must have had to make a lot of sacrifices. Obviously there were
sacrifices that I had to make like some parties and school trips but I don’t think I have missed out. If anything I’ve gained more than I’ve lost with the experiences I have had, and winning the world title in front of a home crowd in 2009 in London was at the top of that list. All my family and friends were able to be there whereas when you are abroad it is usually just my parents able to make the trip. Also, of course, being able to go to the Olympic Games. Does carrying the gold medal hopes of an entire country put a lot of pressure on you? I try to put that pressure behind me. I have achieved more than I ever thought I would in my gymnastics career so I just take every competition as it comes and will see what happens when I get there. What are you thinking in the seconds before you begin an Olympic routine? I just have to treat it as any other routine otherwise there will be too much pressure. How do I control my nerves? That’s a good question. Before a competition I am very antisocial I don’t really talk to anyone except my coach. My parents send me a good luck text every time but I never reply to them until after the event. I usually go into my own world, listen to music, play on my Nintendo DS, read a book - anything to take my mind off it.
What training are you doing at the moment? I usually train about 30 hours a week with Sunday being my day off and at the moment I am just practicing my routines over and over ready for the National Championships which are happening at the Echo Arena in July. That’s an event I am really looking forward to since it is in my hometown and a lot of my friends from school and university are able to attend. What’s the one thing you can’t do without when you’re away at competitions? My phone. I like to be able to keep in contact with all my family and friends wherever I am in the world. I relax by catching up with friends and going shopping. You’ve obviously been incredibly successful. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? To get back up even when it doesn’t work the first time. What’s your message for any budding Liverpool athlete? Never give up and remember anything is possible. TWEDDLE FILE BORN Born Elizabeth Kimberley Tweddle in Johannesburg on April 1 1985, she was raised in Bunbury, Cheshire.
EDUCATION Queen’s School, Chester; degree in sports science from John Moores University.
CAREER In 2002 aged 17 she took gold at the Commonwealth Games on the uneven bars, and four years later after first scooping a gold medal at the European Championships she became the first ever British gymnast to win gold at the World Championships, which she did on the uneven bars. The last two years has seen her at the top of her game, in 2009 scooping two golds at the European Championships and one at the World Championships and repeating the achievement in 2010 for routines on the floor and on the uneven bars. Earlier this year she took gold on the uneven bars at the European Championships in Berlin. She was made MBE in the 2010 New Year Honours.

Do you have any suggestions for cushions that I could buy that would help give the sofas a new lease of life?
Magical murals My daughter is seven years old and is mad about ponies and riding and anything pink. We are about to decorate her bedroom and would love to find a wallpaper that is fun, exciting, magical and that is focused on her favourite hobby. BACHELOR PAD I’ve recently relocated to the city from London after spending sometime in rented accommodation. I have taken the plunge and I am now the proud owner of a luxury city centre apartment. This is where I need your help, my furniture until now has been in storage and my new apartment has one big open-plan living and dining space, could you advise me what is the best way to arrange my furniture to separate the two zones and make the apartment a great bachelor pad?
It’s best to think about colour, texture and shape when you consider cushions and I would always work in pairs. Marks & Spencer have some fantastic cushions in their collection for Summer 2011. The 3D large flower cushion is exciting and would look perfect in the conservatory, bringing the floral element of your garden indoors. Team this cushion with the plain colours of the La Perla range, in antique cream and green and you will not recognise those old sofas.
There are some basic design layouts that could help you design different zone in an open plan space. Firstly I would suggest the use of flooring to differentiate the two areas in question. Most city centre apartments have some form of hard flooring in the living space, therefore a rug would help the living area feel more relaxed and start to create the division. If you don’t already have a rug, I love the Calvin Klein Naturals rug, Ashen, available at John Lewis. The rug is hand tufted from natural wool fibres in colours of beige and grey. It’s a textured abstract design which is very versatile. When it comes to arranging your furniture I would make sure that the back side or side of your sofa is facing the dining area. A sideboard or screen behind the sofa would add to the division of space. Lighting is another valuable instrument, if your apartment has down lighters a low candle pendant hung over your dining table and table lamps in your living space will give the illusion of separate zones.

Arabic Arts Festival A mosaic of Middle Eastern dance, music, film, performance art and real life stories will roll out across the city next month with the launch of the Arabic Arts Festival. With New Histories as its theme it will explore the position of the individual in the midst of political, cultural and religious change. The 10-day festival kicks off on July 1 with the UK premiere of Iraqi Ghosts at the Unity. The production illustrates the past and present impact of war, and glitters with unexpected humour. Delifonseca birthday Customers and local residents came out in force to help celebrate Delifonseca’s fifth birthday. The team at Liverpool’s renowned delicatessen and neighbourhood restaurant created their own city centre pop up garden in the middle of Stanley Street, complete with turf, barbecue, deck chairs and live entertainment.
The event also launched the new look venue with banquet seating, additional lighting and a tiled back bar. Proprietor Candice Fonseca said: “We’ve had a great five years in the city and he event was all about bringing local residents together. rtists from every corner of Africa and beyond helped celebrate the twentieth Africa Oyé in style at Sefton Park. The fun filled festival drew its largest ever crowd, who were rewarded for trusting the weather with 12 fantastic acts, including headliner Marcia Griffiths, whose toe tapping tunes brought the crowd to life.
